Okay ladies - this will be our official home for the next 5-6 months.

There aren't too many rules here, just a few:
- all spreads need to be 8x8" (most of us have an album and we want them to fit);
- all spreads need to be handdrawn/painted in some way
- interpretation of theme is up to the artist, when in doubt - ask the received;
- check in to the thread once a week minimum to stay in touch and report progress;
- report in the thread when you have send or received art from one of the others;
- report timely when you will be late sending a spread; and
- for any questions - just PM me or put your question in the thread.

pastels come under hand-drawn as far as I'm concerned we can use fibre pens, charcoal, prismas, oil, acrylic, watercolour and no doubt other painting/drawing materials that I don't even know of! Anyway if thats not the case I'm in mega trouble!!
Been playing with prismacolor fibre pens tonight!! When the request was for scarecrows and sunflowers I hope these pictures are the right type of thing!

FF is right - all the techniques she mentions are available.... I just love fibre pens - marvellous colors!! And how I love your pictures... they're just so much fun.

As for the Venician Carnival, lilbad... just google in the pictures-option on Carnival of Venice and you'll find a lot of pictures showing the colorful festival masks as an example... and characters from the Italian Commedia del Arte are just great too (Colombine, Harlequine, Pierrot - to mention the three most famous).

I'm pants at drawing and joined as a way to stop me avoiding it and get the practise in and Ireland is so lovely, I've only visited Northern Ireland and Dublin, but plan to go back. Have you ever been? I'm playing around with a few ideas, my sheep bum looks good!!:)

Slightly panicing here myself - after last nights shock (hubby choked on his food in a restaurant and almost died) and a bad night (no sleep, reliving the horror scene) everything looks like impossible to me right now. Just want to make sure I have the correct paper before I start. Just need a yes or no: I can cut 8 x 8 pieces of regualr watercolor paper and it will be appropriate. Is that right? I don't need to allow for album holes, right? Also, no one answered whether they should be a continuous picture or two separate ones. Thanks. I am excited to start. lil

Lil, I'm planning on doing 2 different pictures, rather than one long one, but now you mention it, that sounds good too, I think you can do your own thing re this.

And I'm using 8x8 watercolour paper.

Any kind of paper is fine lilbad - I have an album with protective sheets so no holes are needed.... I love continuous pictures but if two separate ones is better for you, I don't mind.

Thanks for asking Posh - hubby is doing fine now... we were just in shock at the thought of how fast something like this can happen.

Thanks for the info. Sorry to hear about your dh's accident. That must have been horrifying! As my son told me when he was young and someont choked: "Quick, Mom, the Heimlick Remover!" I am a nurse, u see, and he was thinking of the Heimlick Manuver!!

Hi, I'm home...just posting to say that I am deep into goddesses at the moment...drawing for detephoto's spread...leaning toward the celtic godessess at the moment...they had such great red hair! [for those of you who know me, know I collect red head art]. Anyway, having a great time and watercoloring away! I am a little concerned about the paper weight...watercolor paper is a bit heavy, but it needs to be...should fit ok into journal, but just thought I would mention this...

I have done my research and drawings. Now, have to decide between acrylics or watercolor. Venetian Carnival deserves a lot of color, and watercolors seem so washed out some times. Nicky, are u opposed to embelishments?

Hi Lilbad - not too keen on embelishments myself since the pages will go in an album and the embelishments might be damages or might damage other drawings, but just see what you can do, okay?

My goodness - you're all going so fast! I've got some pretty 'vague' ideas and haven't had time to start - tonight we've got a theater show to attend and tomorrow evening we're out too. Hope to have a chance during the weekend (next weekend will be lost because of concert visits too)... argh - if only a day had more than 24 hours!

sorry i haven't posted as of yet. i do online videography for a fairly large newspaper in montana's capital city, and over the last week we've been covering campaign events from bill and hillary clinton and barack obama. i put in my 80 hours of time allotted for two weeks in about four days!!
am anxious to have a string of days off this weekend to get cracking on my pages :)
and terryart -- RED HAIR!! yay! unfortunately my natural hair color is gray/dishwater blond, so i've been dying my hair red for so long my family even thinks i'm a natural redhead :) i'm SOO glad that's the direction you took, and i can't wait to see the pages!

FF - Just google Carnival in Venice and a lot of sites and pictures should be found - you'll see plenty of lovely masks, pictures of the Commedia dell Arte figures (Pierrot, Harlequin, Colombine etc.) - enough to make a choice, I'd think.

In the first post you will find a list with the complete mailing system - those who are already done for their May month commitment can see what their next topic will be (and the one after that etc.).

Things are really moving fast here - spreads that should be send out before or on May 1 have already been received by some and I even hear lilbad talking about finishing her second spread - that one that should be send out before or on June 1...

That's great - but for those who do not manage to finish the spreads this fast - just keep in mind that the last shipping day for round 1 is May 1 - so there is still time... no reason for panic :wideeyed:

hey guys --
so i had pages for fantasy firebird's "taste of the orient" all sketched out (they were inspired by a really cool painting i saw that was similar to those gorgeous scroll paintings that chinese and japanese artists are famous for -- you know, the ones with the water all foamy and full of waves?), and i showed them to a friend of mine to see what she thought, and then described what the project was all about, and she was like: "are you sure this is oriental enough?"
so i got all paranoid and started over.
long story short: i will be mailing on monday, NOT today as i'd hoped :)
but they should be in your hands, firebird, by may 1!

i decided to do a sort of "the lady or the tiger" theme for my oriental pages ... i'm really jazzed with the lady part of that diptych, but the tiger got kind of muddy ... i was trying to make it look like he was lurking through a shadow ... :)

Oh my goodness what a cuty!!!

One small remark for all of you - please make sure that you stick to the correct size of the pages (8"x8")... The first spread I received was amazing and just beautifull but because the pages were too large, I cannot keep them in my album with the rest - I've found a nice spot for them anyway, but it's still a shame.

I love all things Oriental (including the food LOL), the colours, the patterns, the geishas, scenery in fact anything!! I am a complete sucker for any Oriental cards that cross my path which makes it really difficult to part with that theme when I sort out swops LOL. However you wish to go along the Orient route is fine with me - anything from the scenery to the crockery, the vases, the flowers ....heck if you can do the chinese brush painting I would be in seventh heaven!! Kimonos (with or without a person inside), carp, cranes,fans..........oriental style paintings....however you "see" the orient!!

Great ideas. Now I can run with them!! One of my fav. watercolors--one I actually framed---is an Asian ginger jar with turtles on it. Thanks for the response!

Great carnival masks dear!!!! And FF's list of options for her theme is more than welcome to all of us I dare say... being an oriental freak myself, I already had some pretty good ideas but this makes life a lot easier - especially since we're in a bit of a dip at home now that hubby learned that his temporary job will not turn into a steady one and we will have to start looking all over again - with all the financial insecurity that comes with it... :mad:
Friday is my day off so I hope to get something done on the Mythological theme!

Just received two wonderful masks from Poshscot for my Venetian album!!! They;re just great - see below - especially the one done in glass-paint is sparkling!!

Posh, u did a wonderful job on these masks!! Love the colors. Nicky, I figured out why the size was wrong on my masks---the ruler I had in my paint box has an extra 1/2 inch on each end. Can u believe that!! I still think it would be easy to cut your masks down for your album. I am bummed about that.

Wonderful job lilbad - on both spreads... and that helped to make up my mind for FF's oriental pages ;).... with all the colorful stuff being produced, I might just stick to something from my early drawing days - like Sumi-e Japanese pencil art (basically in one color shade)... although I might change my mind overnight - :rolleyes: again!

Nicky I have done this page, however due to some problems with the original paper I have cut out the original mask and stuck it onto the next sheet. It hasn't made the page too thick, but if you don't wat it I'll start again!

Girls, I've been trying to do my next pages in Oil pastels, what a blooming mess I got into!! Think I'll ditch that medium for the time being and stick with wax crayons the kids use!! :D

oh, no! don't give up on oil pastels :) that's the medium i used for your pages, and i hadn't worked with them for aaaaaagges .... it was sooo much fun to drag them out to the kitchen table and make a huge mess with them!

Not really enjoying holidays at the moment Amanda - still got one week of work left (and one week of hoping and praying that my hubby succeeds in finding a new job before we leave for our holiday bread) and I've send a lot of spreads over the big pond in the past years... Most of them arrived within 3 weeks but then again - it has been longer on rare occassions...
We will leave for the holidays on July 2nd and come back on July 20th so maybe they will show up in the meantime.

thank you - I am really pleased with it!! not only did I manage a face nearly stress free but I think I managed to make it look like snakey hair LOL I used derwent inktense pencils so it does have a watercolour look to it. I just hope I can think of something now for the 2nd page LOL
