I use an acrylic gel medium (either matt or gloss). I use that for gluing any items down and also for sealing the piece.

Thanks for hosting, and such an inspirational theme. I tried things I had not done before -- thinking it was too hard. The packing tape transfers are awesome, and for an inexpensive technique they are hard to beat! Last night I tried transfers with blender pens and, gads...I've got a new thing to be hooked on...

katilady
05-21-2008, 12:13 AM
Do tell more about the blender pens!

coffeelatte
05-21-2008, 12:46 AM
This was one of the links in the swap description, and I finally took the time to read it. (By the way, art-e-zine has TONS of interesting stuff at their site, and it is really worth poking around when you have time...)
http://www.art-e-zine.co.uk/imageblend.html

The ones I used are Chartpak blender pens. I got them at our university art supply store for under $4. You have to use either a photo copied or laser printed picture (not an inkjet print.)
1 - Place your copy print side down on the surface you want to cover (this is supposed to work on paper or fabric, wood or copper!)
2 - Hold the copy firmly face down and swipe the blender pen across. Use overlapping strokes until the image is visible through the back of your copy.
3 - Use a spoon or another tool to firmly rub or burnish the image. You can carefully peel up an edge to check, but keep things aligned.
4 - If you think you need to, re-apply the blender pen and burnish again.

I tried a number of papers and plain cardstock or postcards worked well. A couple of these have a stippled/textured look sort of like spotty old cabinet cards. I tried colored and black and white images -- stronger black and whites seemed to work best for me. This is a little tutorial that shows it pretty clearly (it's very easy):
http://www.thimble.ca/?p=121

Now the bad part. These pens are SUPER strong smelling. I would definitely caution hose who are sensitive or worried about exposure to this kind of art supply. The label says they are certified as non-toxic. There's some discussion on this:
http://www.geocities.com/dividedeye/review.html

I was working in a well ventilated room and next time will work outside. Just too strong scented. But really wonderful effects and I can't wait to try it on fabric or wood...WOOD!

Oh Sal they are wonderful. Did you use the packing tape technique? I find that the easiest. I just love my host gift. Thank you.

Amerasu
05-27-2008, 10:12 AM
Yep, the packing tape technique. It actually wasn't super hard, just a bit fiddly and I don't have small scissors! I was using these big hulking tools trying to cut tiny little bits. I think if I want to pursue more collage or mixed media work, then I need to invest in some better tools. :)

coffeelatte
05-27-2008, 10:19 AM
Yeah...tiny scissors make all the difference. I wanted to steal a pair my mom had at her house...it made me realize even though I have small ones, the super fine tips make it much less "fiddly"!

i'm going to be awkward here. I've got embroidery scissors, decoupage scissors, medium scissor and large ones a the ones I find beat for cutting out are the medium ones.

Linda4atc
05-27-2008, 08:43 PM
Instead of cutting out the packing tape figures I purchased 3" wide roll of tape so I get an ATC size piece. What do you glue cut out tape transferes down with?

katilady
05-27-2008, 08:46 PM
Hey Linda! I got your message but my phone is dead, argh!

Anyway, I use either gel medium or glue stick for gluing the transfers. Both work well for me!

I think it's all personal -- which tools to use. I am very picky about the handle shape, and some of the tiny ones just don't work for me. But I tried a pair my mom had and loved 'em. Also -- the nonstick blades didn't hurt in convincing me that those are good for packing tape transfers...

Amerasu
05-28-2008, 09:33 AM
I think I will pick up a pair of smaller scissors today. Not the tiny ones but some medium ones. I used glue stick on my tape transfers and that seemed to work quite well. I hope they stay down! I also used a finishing spray on top to help seal everything in.

When I learned the packing tape method I cut something out and didn't like the edge and decided I liked it better left whole. That is why I spent the extra money to buy the 3" wide tape even tho I had to get a package of 6 rolls, LOL. I only found 2" rolls sold seperately. I hope you all like my atc's, they kind of look laminated the way I made them. I'm still new at some of this stuff.
