SUPER DOOPER CHUNKY ATHON

19TH OCTOBER - 22 OCTOBER

I thought it would be a great opportunity for us to build on our chunky books with a Super-Dooper Chunky athon.

It will start at 12.01am on Friday 19th October and finish sometime after midnight on 22 October, your time zone.

How an athon works is you post your art to the Athon Gallery and then upload it to the thread so everyone can admire it and contact you for a trade.

There are really no rules in an Athon other than enjoy yourselves. You can post any media you like, any number of chunkes

Looking forward to seeing you all there.

My wonderful co-hosts for this athon are Mariloupatch and Sharlene54. Thank you so much for your help.

Just post to this thread to bookmark your place. (We will not be starting a new thread -just continuing with this one.)

It would be nice when you are admiring the lovely chunkies on the thread to send a "You rock" to the maker. Doesn't mean you necessarily want to trade, just that you appreciate their cards. Let's make it a 'You Rock athon" as well :D

ENJOY ENJOY ENJOY

Here is the list (in one place) of the themes several people are collecting. If you want your wish list added to this post before the athon starts, just post to the thread and I will arrange it for you :D

Hi everyone.
I am back in New Zealand and reading all the fabulous people who are joining us for this wonderful Super Dooper Chunky Athon.

I am going to grap a coffee and read through the mountains of messages posted while I have been away.

And thank you for the offers of co-hosting. Marlloupatch and Sharlene will be my co-hosts - great to have you both helping.

See you all again later

I'm collecting:
Dragons
Other Mystical creatures not dragons - eg fairies, unicorns, griffons, mermaids etc
Circus
Elephants
Butterflies
And then anything else that takes my fancy

Good idea to see what people are wanting before the athon starts.

Really looking forward to the athon - it is a long weekend here that weekend so I should have plenty of time to play.

I have already made some backgrounds - I may even offer some backgrounds for swap if I get some more made. I love using backgrounds made by someone else. (and judging from one of the swaps I am currently hosting - so do others)

KESagers
10-05-2012, 09:50 PM
That's such a great idea to swap backgrounds!

Cathy1
10-06-2012, 04:10 PM
I think we can swap backgrounds as well - ie backgrounds for backgrounds or a number of backgrounds for a chunky. This may help if someone wants to swap but doesn't have a chunky you are interested in. I never turn down a swap if the card is available and the idea of swapping for backgrounds appeals - especially if they do not have a theme I am collecting, :notworthy:

Tandy
10-06-2012, 04:27 PM
Count me in!

If I'm understanding this correctly, the chunky pages can be any medium and any theme...right?

Cathy1
10-06-2012, 04:34 PM
Thats right Tandy. Some of us have posted what we are collecting but there is no theme to this athon - just make chunkies in themes you want to make them, post pics in this thread and also in the athon gallery and swap to your hearts content. And most of all, have fun.

CynthiaSillitoe
10-06-2012, 05:31 PM

Cathy1
10-10-2012, 02:09 PM

Yes - I've had pretty good luck with most embellishments surviving but I'm wondering specifically about the paper rosettes that are made from the die cut. Maybe I'll just send one to someone in their envie this time and see if it makes it or if it gets crushed. :)

I don;t have this die but went online to watch Tim Holtz - he is fantastic - and I would think that the rosette would stand up to postage - just a little bit of bubble over it and it should be ok. Im happy to be the guinea pig:biglaugh:

Hey Kristin, I'm in on your deal making.

Ducky, dangles, no dangles, it's really up to you. Depending on the chunky, sometimes it's just some fiber or ribbon hanging off or sometimes it's all kinds of beads and charms.

We're an easy going bunch. Make it your way.

I went OTT with making dangly bits for some of my chunkies - they are beads strung together and then hung on chain. The trouble being that I do not want to part with them as they look great. I have used them on a couple of chunkies and they look fab. I can see I am going to have to make more - (sorry Miloccpep - I'll find something else to send you LOL). Old strings of beads are easy to come across in the junk shops and they make great danglies strung together.

wow lovely dangles Cathy. I love dangles on my chunky's, but some times a small charm or just some assorted fibers and ribbons are great and easy to send by mail.
A special way to put the fibers on....a lit from a can (coke, water,....) you know this tiny thing you have to pull to open? That little thingy that often brakes off?

So, all in all, how do these Athons work? Do only the people that signed up get to trade their Chunkies with each other? How many trades can you do at one time? Is there anything else that a newbie might need to know?

Linda4atc
10-15-2012, 03:17 PM
Kristen maybe you could build (stack) a little bubble wrap frame that the page could sit down in to keep from crushing it. Think of the books they have in TV/movies where you open the book and all the pages are cut to fit a gun or something chunky between the bookcovers.

KESagers
10-15-2012, 06:25 PM
Cathy those danglies are so pretty - I wish you could teach me!

That's a great idea Linda - thank you!

Ferretgirl - I hope someone else confirms what I'm about to say but you don't need to sign up for the marathon - just come and go as you can. Chunkies made during the marathon time can be posted for trade in your "athon" gallery and also in the official marathon thread. Trades are negotiated in personal messages - not in the thread. If someone not participating in the marathon asks you for a trade it's up to you - you can trade only within the marathon or you can trade with anyone on the site. Any more questions - keep asking - questions are good!

Cathy1
10-15-2012, 09:48 PM
As this is the first athon I have hosted - what is the feeling amongst you all - do you want a new thread opened or are you happy to continue with this one? Thoughts. I have seen both new threads and 'carry-ons' so just asking.

sharlene54
10-15-2012, 11:37 PM
I think we should continue with this thread. It seem to me that so many have been posting here, why not continue here. How do others feel about it?

Kristen, you explained it quite well about how a marathon works. Thanks.

10-16-2012, 02:51 AM
Thanks for the info Sharlene and Marilou. I have always wondered why a new thread is opened - we will leave this one running for the duration of the athon. Rock on everyone.

I made some more danglies last night so now all I have to do is wait until the athon starts so can put them on my cards when I make them. It is our Labour Weekend this weekend which means a three day break from work. Just perfect to make chunkies. I have already made some distress backgrounds.

ferretgirl
10-16-2012, 05:16 AM
Thanks, KESagers; that covers most of my questions. As far as using the existing thread or starting a new one; I feel that being a newbie it would be easier to follow through on the same thread but that is just my newbie opinion. Is it possible that when people post to this thread that they put in a few themes they are looking for? I don't mind going back through the thread & looking but having it right there in front of me sure is helpful. Just like having an ad on the messages? Is that even possible? Just curious.....

marilou
10-16-2012, 06:29 AM
Ferretgirl, on page 2 of this thread (just go back a few pages) you find some preferences from some of us. Please let us know what you prefer.
While Cathy is making danglies, I am just practicing stamping with distress inks, the TH way. I made so many backgrounds that I can not resist and start making chunky's although they are for my collection, not to trade...couple of days too early;)

I think the reason why we start a new thread is because some times the first thread is a poll and so we start a new thread that has all of the rules and posting info on it etc. but in this case I agree - there doesn't seem to be a need for a new thread.

Cathy1
10-16-2012, 01:57 PM
I will find some time today and collate everyones themes and put them on the first page so players can use that for inspiration if need be.

Seems there are recurring themes through everyones list so that will be good. (Herds of Elephants = LOL) Of course you can make chunkies in any theme you wish. If you are like me, if I see a great chunky I want it regardless if it fits in one of my current collections or not :biglaugh:

Ferretgirl - you will love this weekend. KES has explained it beautifully - the major idea is to have fun, no stressand make new friends.

OK - I have collated the lists from those of you that posted what you are collecting and added it to the first post. If I have left you off or you want your wish-list added, just post to the thread. I will not be updating preferences once the athon starts as I will be hard out making chunkies LOL.

Remember - this list is a suggestion only as I know I will make chunkies as the muse hits me no matter what the theme. I find it difficult to participate in swaps 'cos I can never stay on track. LOL

The only ones missing are themes from Sharlene54, Miloccpep & Linda4atc. I guess I'll give a short list out, too:

WOLVES
FLOWERS
WHITE ON WHITE
BEARS (ANY & ALL KINDS)
PINK COLORS
ANIMALS

I don't particularly have a theme in mind. I used whatever cuttings I have, put them together and if I am happy with it, that's it! :biglaugh:Anyway, arting started as therapy for me...don't want to have to stress out over themes!:cool: LOL! See you guys later, leaving for a full day workshop now!

I think the reason so many people have the same themes is that the books are often started with a swap where you get somewhere between 3 to 6 pages in the theme.

I have not listed my themes yet because I don't know how much time I'll have to make pages in return. Also I am way picky about my pages fitting in my bind-it-all machine. I really wish the hole punch slot was not so narrow and deep, any chunkiness in that area is a problem.

I don't bind mine. I decided I have a houseful of cool boxes and baskets that wind up getting hidden in closets, so I've started pulling them out and filling them with art. I have a giant blue teacup in my studio and I keep moos and inchies in it. Atcs are still mostly in binders, though I have some frames I also have one of those bulletin boards that uses elastic to hold things. I've been thinking about getting more of those and using them for chunkies.

marilou
10-17-2012, 02:25 AM
I do not bind my chunky's either. I bought this big rings, and just punch a hole in the left corner and put them on the ring. Great item on the coffee table, or I hang them on my board in my room. One is on this moment on my bedside table. I Have a ring with only Tim Holz chunky's, and this way I can ad more, and the book can grow.

I do what you do Mariloupatch except I put a ring top and bottom - holds them together nicely and the yarns don't seem to get so tangled. I love looking at mine and showing them to my friends. When I tidy up my craft area I am going to hang them on hooks as a display.

Thanks for making the Lists up, Cathy1. That at least gives me a bit of an idea as to what people like & what is more likely to be traded. I only have one book started & that is the White on White book which I plan to punch holes in the sides with, too. For us newbies to this it is good to hear all the different kinds of ways to do the books.

I did a few backgrounds last night and will try to keep at it. Right now it looks like I will be likely making stuff on themes of Marie Antoinette, vintage, fairies, maybe elephants, and maybe Zetti. I've been pulling out my stash of "too big for atcs" pages and that's what I'm seeing. I'm also thinking about doing Loteria or Tarot.

Ok I have to get my Steampunk Zoo cards done then I should be able to play. Husband will be going back to work Thursday night, so I can let cooking and dishes slide till Monday. Now if I could just keep the cats off of me and my art when I'm working. The last couple of days they paid me no attention until I sat down to work on my PAT chunkies then one of them would insist on be held. LOL

Actually we took in another cat and she is being kept in quarentine from Bart and Ash till the vet gives us the ok. She is a petite little old tabby with no teeth that was abandond by our downstairs neighbors in Eureka. Matt has always left food out for her they didn't seem to feed her regularly, and with him working so much this summer she was down to just a bit over 6 pounds at her first vet visit. Just a week after her brought her home here to the property she was 7 1/2 pounds and looking much better. But she has and has had for a long a cough and sneezing that concerns my vet about letting her with the other cats. Anyways to end the long story .... I have been spending a lot ofd time over inn the trailer giving her attention. She needs to get over being afraid and hiding so much and learn that we are here to make her life better.

mariloupatch that travel chunky sounds great. It could even be considered an art journal of sorts and you could share it in the Art Journal-ers Discussions, Tips and Prompts thread (http://atcsforall.com/forum/showthread.php?t=19168)

Cathy 1, I posted my list in my signature. I have also decided that even though I purchased my Bind-it-all for chunkies I am going to give up on trying to get all my pages to work for it. My first book is held with rings I guess I can do my other books as well. I have only bound one book so far and I had lots of problems with the pages either having holes punched in important parts of the page front or signature info on the back; or the pages were too bulky to fit into the holepunch at all. Maybe if I get enough pages some can be bound other can be rings.

Linda, bless you for taking in that little kitty! I hope she gets healthier and thrives with you as her caregiver!

Marilou, I love the travel chunky idea! I have also been around the world and think a page for each place would be amazing - thank you for the inspiration!

A few years back I joined a chunky swap on another site, where each person made a page and then color copied and embellished it, so we each got a finished book with everyone's pages in it. The theme was "Where in the World", and the size for our pages was 4 x 7 inches. I made my page using ephemera that I collected on my trips to Kenya and South Africa, and thought I'd share it with you:

Your travel page is cool. I have made color copies of almost all my art. My first chunky swap was mermaids and I did 8 hand drawn pages with the front and then the back of the mermaid on the back, I copied all of them for myself, and made a little book.

Remember - this list is a suggestion only as I know I will make chunkies as the muse hits me no matter what the theme. I find it difficult to participate in swaps 'cos I can never stay on track. LOL

Hello all, I finished 2 chunkies today. I need to take a nap :sleep: now and then get ready for a concert tonight. It is a concert of an old Dutch rock band, from when I was young... and I am going with old friends. Hahaha, really looking forward to it. I will be back tomorrow, I have some ideas of using polymer clay.

I have a question - has anyone used the Tim Holtz die - rosette - on a chunky? If so how did it mail? I'm looking at one I just made and I don't see how it would survive even in a padded envie.

I'm not familiar with it, but what about putting the chunky in a cd case to ship? I did that once with one I thought wouldn't make it in a padded mailer.

sharlene54
10-19-2012, 01:46 PM
I think the bulkyness of the package makes it cost more. My post woman put the envie through this gadget, if it doesn't go through, it costs more. I try to make it as flat as possible without crushing the card. It does sound like a good idea, I might try it if I had a delicate chunky to send.

I'm not familiar with it, but what about putting the chunky in a cd case to ship? I did that once with one I thought wouldn't make it in a padded mailer.

That is another great solution - I checked and it would just fit on a chunky. I would not be able to layer another chunky in with the case as the case would not close but for a single chunky it would work. I'll try mailing a couple different ways and everyone can let me know what condition it's in when it arrives. :)

The Rosette is delicate, the dvd case will cost more but it is a brilliant idea if you are worried about something. I would mail the dvd case in a bubble mailer to.

Here is a link to Caliact I just posted in my gallery my sweet little old girl (http://www.atcsforall.com/forum/gallery/index.php?n=330130).

@mariloupatch chunky 12 on hold for Linda, she wanted recipes???? YOU BET, I do want it! I love it. Your pages are all lovely chunky 11 also caught my eye!

@Evalila cute little witches.

@sniisk those are sweet pages.

@miloccpep your oragami is lovely.

@KittyNL Love those pages, I thought my Asian book was full, but I'd make room for that Geisha.

@sharlene54 Cute pages lofe the way you used the bird cage with snowman. I have that diecut to, I should use it.

@Cathy1 I didn't see Frida on anyones list so you may be tempting them into starting a new book.

@Ducky saw your Black and white page last night, to cool.

And mariloupatch you are on a roll girl. So many pages! You are tempting me to start a winter/Christmas book.

Ya'lll are blowing me away with all the beautiful art!!!
Hard decision for me, do I read all the 600+ posts, or just jump in and start creating?????

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kristin, re your post #53 I am just starting to read the chunkie athon thread - so maybe this has been answered already - I made a TH chunkie using one of the layered flowers and I think it made it just fine - I wrapped in bubble wrap within a bubble mailer, also I sprayed mine with acrylic sealer so that makes the paper more pliable. The owner can then 'fluff' out the petals to their liking.
PS, it is in my gallery if you want to see it!
KESagers
Blanche your flower is absolutely beautiful! It's good to know that it traveled safely. The rosettes are folded like a fan and my concern is that the folds will crush. Several people have offered good suggestions so anyone who trades with me during this particular athon is getting a rosette - I'll be mailing them in different packaging - and I'm asking for a report on how it survives the trip. Then I'll know what I can and can't do on a future chunky.
Thanks for letting me know about the flower! I've got to see if I have that die that you used - I really like how your flowers turned out. :)
