View Full Version : Metal ATC Swap, Due June 15

04-04-2008, 11:20 PM
Swap Due Date - June 15th
Signup/withdraw date - June 1st
Number of Cards - 3/3
Number of participants - 12

If you're interested in participating in a sequel swap sometime this fall, PM me. I am keeping a list, and will send invitations to everyone who wants to play. It's looking like August will be the likeliest tine for me to do the sequel.

Inspired by some really fun ideas and examples in this thread (http://www.atcsforall.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2448), I decided to host my first swap!

Cards for this swap will have the majority of their components be metal - metal tape, foil, tin, brads or eyelets, wire, charms... They don't have to be exclusively metal, but they can be. Since this is a weightier/bulkier swap, please send a SASE with 79 (remember the rate change 5/12), the non-machinable rate. I want everyone's cards to arrive safely! International participants, I will cover the cost of your returns, but please include a Self-Addressed Envelope.

When you send in your cards, please include:
1) your username on every card*
2) your username on your envelope AND return envelope
3) a SASE (or SAE for international players)
4) your cards in plastic sleeves (please, it will help protect your creations)

*If it's not possible to put your username and info on your creation (like if it's made of wire, metal mesh, etc.), please include that on a piece of paper or cardstock, and put that into the plastic sleeve with your card.

This swap will be on time. I will start swapping on June 15th. Since it's my first swap, I'll be counting on all of you to help me through this and ask for your cooperation in getting your cards to me on time. Returns will be mailed no later than June 21st. Any cards I receive after that will have to be sent back to their creators.

Please PM me with any questions you have, or when you need my address to send in your cards!

04-04-2008, 11:31 PM
My Cutco scissors will cut through a penny (I can turn it into a 'corkscrew') so I should be good to go. This is the perfect swap to use those pretty rusty bits I find around the world!

ETA: everyone be on the look out, for good metal bits that we can use for bases....I'll scour the hardware store when I can.

LisaVollrath mentioned her site having a tute for metal sheets...anyone have the link? I'm a member there, but find it hard to navigate some times.

04-04-2008, 11:49 PM
You got me. Can I join too?

04-05-2008, 12:38 AM
Welcome, TGBD! :D

Here's a link to Lisa Vollrath's instructional site:

04-05-2008, 03:02 PM
I think you are full up - but if a spot opens up I would love to join as well.

04-05-2008, 03:28 PM
OK - lisavollrath, rocketwoman, eggstudio and Queenofthenight, you're my last 4; welcome!

Rockstarsgirl and goatgoddess, I hereby name you first and second alternates; should anyone need to drop out, I'll tap you first and give you the option of joining. Also, if enough people express interest, I will host a sequel to this, probably in July (we'll see how my schedule goes), and if you don't make alternate, you will have the first two slots of the sequel swap. Fair enough?

I am SO EXCITED that so many people signed up so fast! I went to the hardware store and to Michael's and picked up some great goodies - and I posted my find at the grocery store!

Welcome, welcome, welcome, everyone! I'm so happy to have you here. :jiggy:

04-05-2008, 03:36 PM
Since we are full, I will move us from 'open to 'active'! :D

04-05-2008, 03:38 PM
Well darn! I wasn't quick enough for this one! I would like to be considered for the sequel swap though if that is possible. Perhaps it is a good thing I missed out on this one as I have myself spread pretty thin these days!
You all have lots of fun and I'll lurk to see all the pretty things you come up with!

04-05-2008, 03:42 PM
Rats! I missed out, maybe next time ..*smile*.. I do hope you all post pictures of your tin art I would love to see them. I'll check back from time to time.

04-05-2008, 03:59 PM

04-05-2008, 04:23 PM
Thanks so much, OY!

I have indeed started a list of interested persons for a sequel. I'm so excited that there's this much interest!

04-05-2008, 06:08 PM
I can't wait...I started looking at sites last night...I guess my insomnia paid off last night, I got a coveted place in your first swap. thanks....

04-05-2008, 11:47 PM
My first card is in the gallery. :)

04-06-2008, 08:13 AM
Very cool, OY! I love that splash of red!

04-06-2008, 08:31 AM
I found a little info online I thought I would pass along.

A. Copper - A beautiful patina with a rainbow affect can be easily accomplished. This includes numerous colors and may be achieved with a combination of Vinegar and Hydrogen Peroxide. One good proportion is 3 parts Vinegar to 1 part Hydrogen Peroxide. The patina's success is very dependent on weather conditions, the warmth of the solution and metal. The solution may be warmed before application since many patina solutions are more effective if applied warm. Copper must be clean. Scrubbing with fine 000 steel wool and rinse with warm soapy water will help remove the surface grease. Apply the solution with a brush or by immersing the copper. Irregular shaped Copper pieces may also be inserted in a plastic bag with the finish. Do not apply another finish on top of this patina, such as polyeurethane, it will destroy the colors.

B. Brass - Ammonia soaked sawdust placed in an enclosed box will produce a beautiful blue/green patina on brass. The brass must be cleaned of surface grease before inserted in the sawdust. Brass can be cleaned with the same method as
copper. (Found at: http://home.flash.net/~dwwilson/ntba/archive/metalfinishes.txt)

Lay your pieces out on a cookie sheet lined with aluminum foil then bake at 450F for about 30 minutes. Some brass may take up to an hour, just keep an eye on it. Some brass will respond perfectly and no other steps are needed. Other brass may turn multi-tone (with blues and purples). When this happens, let it cool down then do a quick dip in a 50% vinegar/50% water solution. Rinse with cold water immediately after dipping. If you leave in the vinegar for too long it will remove a lot of the oxidation and you will have to rebake it. (Found at http://vintagestones.com/_wsn/page12.html)

I tried running a piece of brass mesh "fabric" thru the flame on my gas range, and got a lovely multi-color effect with that, too. I didn't put it in the vinegar solution after, tho.

There are lots of chemicals you can use for aging metal, of course, but I was looking for methods using household items that were safer/cheaper. Hope you found this useful!

04-06-2008, 12:46 PM
I wanted to play too :( Please put me down for the next one.

04-06-2008, 01:03 PM
You bet, Loralou!

04-06-2008, 01:57 PM
I'm having fun with this, I may host one soon too. :) I think a metal twinchie swap would be really cool!

04-06-2008, 04:51 PM
I was reading a book called "Metal Craft Discovery Workshop" using the technique of Potato Chip submersion for copper... way to cool. Submerge a clean and sanded piece of copper that has been dipped in salted water into a bowl of crushed salt and vinegar potato chips and spray with water. The book also recommends to have an extra bowl of potato chips just in case you get hungry! LOL

04-06-2008, 05:32 PM
COOL! My hubby loves those things - I'll have to pick some up at the store, and report how it worked. Purely scientific research, of course. ;)

04-07-2008, 11:07 AM
Helpful hint: If you're having trouble getting your cards into the plastic sleeves, wrap it in a piece of paper, leaving the bottom 1/8 inch free. Slide the wrapped card into the sleeve, hold onto the bottom of the card and the sleeve, and pull the paper out, leaving the card inside.

Or am I the only one who has these troubles?

04-07-2008, 07:40 PM
excellent tip thanks!

04-07-2008, 09:59 PM
darn it missed this due to traveling!! Next time maybe!!

04-07-2008, 11:06 PM
You are an awesome hostess...thank you for all the great tips!!!

04-08-2008, 08:39 AM
darn it missed this due to traveling!! Next time maybe!!

Sorry, Pippin! I forgot you were out of town when I sent the invite - I'll add you to my sequel list! ;)

04-11-2008, 12:22 PM
My cards are ready. They are dry embossed in metal sheets. They are more brilliant/colorful in real life, I may embellish them some before I post them.

04-11-2008, 12:24 PM
Those are great - I love the look of embossed metal! :D I'll PM you my info right now.

04-11-2008, 11:53 PM
Elena...i love your cards. The colors look wonderful.

04-18-2008, 02:10 PM
Elena - your lovely embossed metal cards arrived today, and they are even prettier in person! Thank you for the extras! :cute:

04-18-2008, 04:06 PM
I'm lurking ..*smile*.. but I just have to ask, Elena did you paint your metal emboss cards? Does metal comes in those different colors?

04-21-2008, 04:15 PM
Chatty - I have seen colored aluminum at Michael's. I didn't pay too close attention to it there, so I don't know how thick it is, but it came in a roll packaged in a tube. That may be what Elena used.

I'm having so much fun with this - here's another one I made this afternoon:

I used Fiskar's embossing plates and their embossing tool (the one with ball bearings). It works quite well, but I had to tape the aluminum down and it wanted to curl up down the long center. And of course, distressing the embossed aluminum works really well.

04-21-2008, 05:41 PM
very nice!

04-23-2008, 01:16 PM
Ok, I finished up mine, here is one...oh I used silver metal tape...

04-23-2008, 02:00 PM
That's really funky! I like it! :D

04-26-2008, 03:17 PM
Eggstudio...i love your card...
Asena...wow...Mountain Dew...I am suddenly thirsty...love it!

I just received a book I ordered called "New Metal Foil Crafts"...it looks so nifty...school has been nuts, I hope to try it soon...I will keep you posted

04-26-2008, 04:15 PM
Jeanette - please post a review of that book in the book reviews forum (http://www.atcsforall.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=57) when you have the chance! I'd love to hear what you think of it. :)

04-29-2008, 03:27 PM
eggstudio - your wonderful cards arrived today! Thank you for the extras! ;)

You guys are going to love your returns, if the first 2 sets I've received are anything to go by!

05-04-2008, 10:42 AM
Hey there, gang! I will be out of town for as long as a week; Mom's having outpatient surgery and I'm taking her to the hospital Monday (tomorrow) morning. SHE thinks I'll be able to leave Tuesday, but I think that's awfully optimistic on her part.

Hubby has strict instructions where to put my incoming mail, so if you send anything while I'm gone, it'll be safe. I'll be able to log in and check my messages, so I won't be completely incommunicado, I just won't be anywhere near my "stuff."

Hope you're all having a good time with your metal bits!

05-13-2008, 08:03 AM
Just a hair over a month to go! :cute: I am back home, btw. Mom's recovering nicely.

05-15-2008, 04:19 AM
welcome back! Glad to hear your Mom is recovering!

05-20-2008, 01:01 PM
I am glad your Mom is doing well. i have been playing with metal like crazy. i have used some on a house rolo in my gallery and I have another metal rolo almost completely done. I have some new stuff on its' way to me. I can't wait.

05-22-2008, 08:39 PM
I have done a set of metal embossed cards for the Unusual Media Swap...I am still experimenting. I also just received a new book "Metal Embossing Workshop," by Magdalens S. Muldoon. I have already looked thru the book, I can't wait to try the new techniques. I also ordered 2 new colors of metal and I received them today, as well. I am going to finish some more swaps and then try out the metal...hopefully tomorrow.

05-23-2008, 11:03 PM
I saw those for the Unusual Media swap - they're great! I'm glad you're having a good time with this! ;)

05-24-2008, 05:48 AM
My cards are ready, but not scanning very well.
I used metal tape on cardstock, and put them through my cuttlebug embosser. It worked quite well. I embellished them with brads and eyelets etc too. Another one is brass cloth... I also embossed it, and surprisingly it turned out okay too. Will send them tomorrow.

05-24-2008, 08:47 AM
Very cool! (And probably much easier than the hand-embossing I've been doing with the Fiskars plates!) ;) I'll let you know as soon as they arrive.

05-24-2008, 12:04 PM
Hand embossing is lots of fun...but very tiring...I agree. What a great job everyone is doing on their cards. I can't wait for the returns.

05-31-2008, 07:38 AM
Stormarela - your cards arrived yesterday, but my cable (and cable modem) went out and I couldn't get on to say so! They're wonderful in person!!!

05-31-2008, 07:00 PM
Here are my metal cards...I hope you guys all like them. I hand embossed and then embellished in different ways...

06-01-2008, 02:12 AM

06-01-2008, 09:15 PM
I can't wait to see 'em in person! ;)

06-03-2008, 12:37 PM
I got some copper mesh and metal tape this weekend to work on these some more. :D

06-06-2008, 07:17 PM
Jetleg, your most awesome cards arrived today - thank you for the extra! They are much brighter in person. :D

06-06-2008, 08:03 PM
I got more metal stuff last weekend to work on these, but dont' know if I'll feel well enough to get them done and sent to you. I promise I will try!

06-07-2008, 01:10 AM
My cards are in my gallery if you want to take a peek.

06-07-2008, 01:16 PM
OY - don't push yourself! You've got one of the best reasons I can think of to be delayed!

SallyAnn - those are lovely!

06-07-2008, 01:19 PM

06-13-2008, 02:10 AM
SallyAnn, you lovely cards arrived, after a bit of confusion... the mailman (a sub) delivered it next door, but the neighbors redirected it. (It was you that opened one end and sealed it back shut, right??)

06-13-2008, 02:30 AM
wow, wonderful cards here, I am stoked about seeing the returns!!

06-15-2008, 06:41 PM
Nooooo-I didn't open the end hope all arrived safely

06-15-2008, 10:19 PM
Hmmm... well, there are 4 cards in the envie and your return envie, so if that's what you sent, that IS what arrived.

Since I goofed on the Due Date, making it a Sunday, I'll wait for the mail to arrive Monday (tomorrow) and start swapping out the cards.

06-16-2008, 02:08 PM
Maxie23 - your incredibly funky cards arrived this morning! Thanks for the extra!

OK GANG! I'm going to start swapping out tonight, and I should be at the PO with your returns no later than Wednesday. I'll update the thread again when I get them in the mail.

06-17-2008, 11:54 AM
Good morning, all you artistic metalworkers! I have swapped out cards, secured them in the envelopes and reinforced the flap with packing tape. Shortly, I will be bustling off to the PO to double-check the postage for them and mailing them to their new homes. I double- and triple-checked to make sure no one was getting their own cards back, and tried really hard to give everyone a good assortment of cards. I hope you like them! (If I DID make any mistakes, let me know and I will fix it!)

I really enjoyed this swap, and would love to do a sequel to it. It will probably be in August, so that when I need to swap out returns, the kidlet will be back in school (and out of my hair). So if you enjoyed this one, I hope you'll come back for a sequel. Thank you all so much for making my first swap such a pleasure!

06-19-2008, 05:04 PM
My cards are here! Thank you Queen of the Night, maxie23 and Stormarela for making such inventive cards. And thank you Asena for being such a great host.

From the # of iTraders, it looks like everyone's received their cards, even if everyone hasn't posted here.

Thank you all for such a great swap experience and for trusting your artwork to a first-time host! And I do know you were trusting me - rather daunting, actually, all that responsibility. I'll let everyone know when I do the sequel (probably August), and I have a list of folks who were unable to play in this one, as well as the two gals whose lives got in the way of their art for this round. Thank you so much, y'all!

06-26-2008, 06:30 PM
Thank you-Wendy/Asena! Please keep me posted for another swap--Thanks.
