View Full Version : Zentangle-athon Nov. 25-28?

11-13-2012, 11:35 AM
At the urging (didn't really take a lot ;) ) of a delightful trading buddy, I would like to explore having a Zentangle-athon. Is anyone else interested in participating sooner rather than later? My daughter and two grand-daughters are coming to visit the week after Thanksgiving and I'm going to be sacrificing my painting studio. Plus I have a couple of really long train and airplane trips (because I'm going to be traveling with them as an extra pair of hands) when painting will not be practicable.

If that date doesn't suit, perhaps the first weekend of the new year, since the after-Christmas doldrums seem to set in and we need something to look forward to :jiggy:

I think some challenges would be fun, if we do this...

I would like to propose what I'm calling the "String Theory" (for more info on Zentangle and terminology go to www.zentangle.com or http://tanglepatterns.com/ ) I choose a certain number (depending on how I feel at the time) of blank ATCs, "string" my blank cards with the same sketch, then draw a different tangle in each area on each card. Seems to turn out some remarkable cards.

Another challenge, would be to "tangle" holiday or seasonal designs...

I know I'm babbling now. Been dealing with some insomnia, which is good and bad...good because I'm getting lots of painting accomplished; bad because I'm also getting pretty goofy :goofy:

11-13-2012, 02:04 PM
I love this idea!

11-13-2012, 03:25 PM
I would absolutely be up for this. The November dates sound great!

11-13-2012, 03:39 PM

11-13-2012, 09:45 PM
OH....I love the challenges......can't wait. I know I am not as good as some of you.

11-13-2012, 10:22 PM
The ZAT has been put on the athon calendar for Nov. 24-28...:jiggy:

11-13-2012, 10:43 PM
ME! Me! Me! I LOVE tangles and tangling. Need a co-host? I'm happy to do that if you want ;)

11-14-2012, 12:18 AM
Please, please, please!!! I have no idea what I'm doing...need all the help I can get! Thank you so much :jiggy:

11-14-2012, 10:03 AM
You are doing a great job already. If we make Zentangle ornaments outline before?

11-14-2012, 10:55 AM
You are already doing a good job, but as I'm in a different time zone, I can be online when you're not.

Outlines will be fine Dsign, we're allowed to make backgrounds for the other athons :)

11-14-2012, 11:07 AM
Ibus, I love that you said you're in different time zones :cute: We're actually almost on opposite sides of the planet...this is going be good great fun!

Anybody else out there want to play co-host? That would be FABULOUS!

What are some "challenges" you'd like to have happen?

Ok, I'm getting really pumped now :jiggy:

11-14-2012, 11:18 AM
Hmmm, let me think,

Other shapes, animals, initials? Although given the time of year, ornaments are a really good idea.

Choose a tangle or two and challenge everyone to incorporate those into their art on that day.

11-14-2012, 01:48 PM
I can help co-host also.

11-14-2012, 02:52 PM
I will try to play!

11-14-2012, 03:13 PM
Jill, OUTSTANDING! thanks for your help...
Cynthia, Miryei, Kalykakes, Marilou, EXCELLENT!
We're going to have so much stinking fun...tell all your friends!!!

11-14-2012, 04:29 PM
I sent out some personal messages to some artists. When I got in there to do the message I couldn't think of anyone. I will do it again if I see that I got no takers.

11-14-2012, 05:08 PM
Great! I've finally got my PAT cards done and could use a change of pace from all the stitching I've been doing. I'd love to try my hand at some more zentangles.

11-14-2012, 06:55 PM
Very cool! welcome aboard...it'll be good to have you among us

11-14-2012, 08:14 PM
This sound awesome! I haven't been able to participate in an athon in a while. I would love to do this one.

11-14-2012, 09:07 PM
Today, I found an art shop less than 5 minutes away. It sells microns in tons of different widths and colors, so I picked up a few. Looking forward to trying them out!

11-14-2012, 09:59 PM
I just picked up a set of microns!!! Giggity! I've never done athon before! Can some one give me a low down???

11-14-2012, 11:25 PM
The holiday rush is on but I'll try to play a little. Thanks for the invite.

11-14-2012, 11:46 PM
I love Microns although my fave size is 08 and they're not as available in as many colors. My dream would be 08 microns in Prismacolor colors.

11-15-2012, 03:27 AM
Kalycakes, I posted below the file from a previous marathon, which I think is very helpfull. More questions....just shoot!

11-15-2012, 09:26 AM
The way "athon" was explained to me is that during the time period, if you so choose to participate, you work on cards, or chunkies, or whatever the form of trading is in the theme and medium of the athon. As you create, you are encouraged to upload pics of your creations in the "athon gallery". That way, when you or another player wants to negotiate a trade, they can contact by personal message to set things up. I think it's really cool to see how everyone's creativity goes in so very many directions! There are no requirements to play or trade; no formal swapping. It's all about having fun and letting your mind expand and be inspired. It's good great fun to post comments to the thread throughout also, to keep everyone updated and see how the other participants are fairing.

11-15-2012, 09:30 AM
Now you really have it.
You will do a great job and I can't wait.

11-15-2012, 09:48 AM
I would like to join. If you can't tell from my avatar and Flickr I kinda like tangles :P

Another suggestion for pens for tangles for those of you out there interested. While microns are the official Zentangle pens that work great on the official Zentangle tiles (high-quality print-making paper and do have tooth - also expensive) I think Faber-Castell PITT artist pens are the best on Bristol, card stock and hot pressed water color paper.

In my opinion I think

Micron 005 = PITT XS
Micron 01 = PITT S
Micron 05 = PITT M

That way if you can't find Microns where you are maybe you can find the Faber-Castell PITT artist pens.

11-15-2012, 09:52 AM
Viva, do they come in colors? Do you know if they are stocked in chain craft stores like Michaels or Hobby Lobby? Do they dry quickly or will they bleed when wet? I use watercolor pencils sometimes and some inks really bleed unless I spray them, which is a long discussion for another time...

11-15-2012, 10:17 AM
Pitt pens are great too. They don't bleed either.. They are archival and waterproof.. I've used both! As for colours I know they come in sepia and grey, and black... I'm not sure about other colours... those are just the ones I have. My Micheals carries both brands.

11-15-2012, 01:37 PM
They are in Michaels and Hobby Lobby and Staples/Office Depot they are in the fine art section where the watercolors and other art pens in the art stores and in the pen section in the office stores. What I do is check to see has the best coupon at the time and buy the pens from that store when I need them.

They do not bleed, in fact I think they bleed less than Micron and they dry just as fast as microns (20 sec). I have used watercolors over the PITT pens with no issues. No spraying needed.

11-15-2012, 01:51 PM
Thanks, guys...I believe I may have to do some shopping here pretty soon ;) and definitely before 11/24

11-16-2012, 09:18 AM
I hope I can join in on the fun. I have just started doing zentangles. I use mostly Miccrons. I have a few different colors. I use black most of the time and add some colors.

11-16-2012, 12:43 PM
My colour tends to be in the backgrounds rather than the pens, although I've used red and gold as well :)

11-16-2012, 02:47 PM
I finished all bur one swap. And I will finish that next week. I will be ready....

11-18-2012, 03:48 PM
After reading everything  I think I understand a-thon now! I would like to join/play!

11-18-2012, 04:03 PM
You don't have to join just make art during those days and post to the thread and trade...You will have lots of fun.

11-18-2012, 04:34 PM
Sounds fun! I'll see if I have time to play at least a little.

11-18-2012, 04:55 PM
Hey, does anyone know if using microns over watercolor is bad for the pens?

11-18-2012, 05:11 PM
I'd say yes it is, cos my very thin pens don't work for a while after using them on watercolours. I now have a thicker set .03, that I use only on watercolour backgrounds.

11-18-2012, 08:16 PM
After reading everything  I think I understand a-thon now! I would like to join/play!

Come play! Athons are great for getting to know people. :)

11-19-2012, 10:09 AM
We're counting down to lift-off  I'm getting excited :jiggy: How 'bout everybody else?!

11-19-2012, 10:30 AM
I am! Does anyone video conference when doing an -athon?

11-19-2012, 12:13 PM
good question...I cannot...my studio and computer are not in the same location...but it does sound like good great fun

11-19-2012, 12:21 PM
It would be neat to have a video chat channel open to anyone who wanted to pop in .

11-19-2012, 01:27 PM
I can't either because mine are different locations also.
My Daughter brought me her Christmas cartridge for my Ciricut. I want to cut out some christmas ornaments to Zentangle on.

11-19-2012, 01:57 PM
Or even if we used the AFA chat channel-there's never anyone there, we'd have the whole room to ourselves!

11-19-2012, 02:07 PM
We could do that.

11-19-2012, 03:26 PM
afa has a chat channel... lol

11-19-2012, 03:57 PM
I forget to chat and as I often spend the day in pjs if my lurgy's acting up, I'm not so keen on video! http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb175/Ibuschat/70345-bigshock.gif

11-19-2012, 04:23 PM
I think the AFA chat space will be great. posting pictures often during the progress of a project will be interesting to all. I'm in.

11-19-2012, 06:14 PM
didn't I just tell you it'd be a party!!! Ibus, I think you'd be darling your pj's anyhow :biglaugh:

11-20-2012, 03:28 AM
Do not forget ladies, you will be asleep when we in Europe are creating!!!

11-20-2012, 10:45 AM
Rats! I did forget about that. No, wait...if it's 3am Pacific, where does that place Europe? Are you still up or are you just falling asleep? You know what, I can't do maths in my head, so I best not even try that road...

11-20-2012, 10:50 AM
We are about 9 hours ahead of you gals (Pacific time that is), about 8 hours ahead with lets say Houston TX and 6 hours ahead with the east coast.
Singapore is the first to wake up, and then Australia I think. Not really sure about those countries.

11-20-2012, 11:41 AM
I just kinda peeked into the "chat" that's listed on the tool bar, just to see what would happen. There are some options (that I did not explore). I'm thinking that if you've the desire and time -- certainly login and see if there is someone to chat with. It sounds like a really good way to become more acquainted with AFA members and for those insomniacs (hi-my-name-is-eleanor-I-can't-sleep) among us, well, BONUS!, we get to talk around the world:jiggy: It's absolutely not required to play, but could add lots of fun... Remember what I said -- it's a PARTY :spinny:

11-20-2012, 12:02 PM
I need everyone's feedback if you will -- what do you think about starting the ZAT on Friday, 11/23? That's gives us a good five days to create. I'm a little selfish about continuing thru Wednesday tho -- I'm away from my computer early Sunday morning until Tuesday evening. I will be able to contribute to the thread but not be able to post any pictures. So I guess what I'm asking -- would five calendar days be too long?

11-20-2012, 12:05 PM
I don't think so. It really gives the people who only have the week-end more time. And you will be away for 3 days.

11-20-2012, 12:06 PM
Absolutely NOT, 5 days is just good because not everyone is available all 5 days. I am away on Monday, and please start on Friday. Is this Friday 0.01 am or 11.59 pm?

11-20-2012, 12:09 PM
Friday, 11/23, 12 am, wherever in the world you live; zero-hundred hours, if you can calculate military time, which I don't usually, but my husband used to serve and he can help me when I get confused

11-20-2012, 12:12 PM
Rats! I did forget about that. No, wait...if it's 3am Pacific, where does that place Europe? Are you still up or are you just falling asleep? You know what, I can't do maths in my head, so I best not even try that road...

I'm never sure either, especially with Summer time etc. I know I'm now two hours behind my daughter in SA, who I think is on the same time as my daughter in Holland, or maybe that's only during Summer time! .

11-20-2012, 12:16 PM
Whoa, Just stumbled on to this, and am so glad that I did. I will try to play as much as time permits! I love that you are starting on Friday, as that gives me some weekend time to hopefully play here and there! Any challenges or themes yet in the brewing, so I can at least start thinking about it?

11-20-2012, 02:50 PM
Did we decide tangling ahead was ok if we don't finish up or color until the athon?

11-20-2012, 03:11 PM
I think it was the other way round, prepare backgrounds with colour, strings etc and start tangling once the Athon starts.

11-20-2012, 03:11 PM
It's ok with me...

11-20-2012, 03:14 PM
Oh, ok, I'll start tangling then! I've been resisting the urge

11-20-2012, 03:37 PM
Ok, what I'm doing now is outlining shapes to then tangle. :)

11-20-2012, 03:58 PM
When do we start? I see 24 and 25-th, and I read friday that is the 23-th?

11-20-2012, 04:18 PM
Friday on the 23rd at Midnight. We will have a party.

11-20-2012, 05:06 PM
May I just clarify things as I understand them about "starting early"? This is not a competition or a race. We're all grown-ups and we each know what our lives can and cannot handle. If you look ahead and feel the need to get some things done before the actual posted start time, I would ask that those items not be posted to the gallery or make any remarks until such time as the marathon is officially opened.

Ibus, design49 and I have been in touch with each other as hosts and the "official" thread will be posted sometime on Thursday, with lots of good information. The start time of the Z-thon will be Friday, 11/23, 12 am. I have asked Carole to make that adjustment to the posted calendar, but that hasn't happened yet.

Any other questions we can help you with, please be sure to ask...

11-20-2012, 06:20 PM
 I sat down to do some tangling (I got some new pens today) and ended up making a Gothic Arch for a swop instead!

11-20-2012, 07:11 PM
Well done, Elizabeth, very well done!!!

11-21-2012, 05:47 PM
I mailed my last swaps off today....Now when my pumpkin is thawed I can make my pumpkin bar dessert.

11-21-2012, 07:52 PM
I still hope to play, though I'm having tech woes....I may not have a scanner. We'll see.

11-21-2012, 08:43 PM
I sure hope you can work it out...

11-22-2012, 08:19 PM
Okay, my friends, the official thread for this athon is posted. The fun starts at midnight tonight:jiggy: Hope to see you there...
