The Doll Caravan A Moley-esque Art Doll SwapSwap Start Feb 15 2013 Swap Due Date –August 15 2013
Signup/withdraw date – Jan 15 2013
First Mail Date February 15 2013
Number of participants – six *FULL*
This swap is for a 3-D art doll collaboration, similar to the dolls that appear in the book The Doll Chronicals.
The concept: circulate dolls among six artists, each artist contributing something to the work in progress. In the end each artist will receive back her doll with the art work and imagination of the other 5 artists.
Rules, Rules, Rules:
There are no withdrawals.
You will need a starter doll. It can be a torso, a complete body, a store bought doll to be altered.
Postage & Mailing:
You will need some sort of mailing box that is sturdy enough to survive opening and remailing to subsequent artists. Sorry it is unlikely that a padded envelope will be sufficient.
Dolls need to be mailed by the 15th of the month to the next artist in the travel plan.

I've put together some aspects of each doll that has been posted in the thread so far. If any of you have anything to add, please let me know and I'll include it in the description/theme guidelines of your doll on this page so you don't have to search the thread for the details.
Art_junkie: “Keeper of the Garden Gate” She's about 14" tall. Her body is gesso painted fabric. The fabric can be painted on or sewn, but you may need pliers to push the needle through the fabric. Better to sew or embroider piece fabric then hot glue it onto the body.
Her face rhinestones and wooden clock weight calves are trophies from my brother's dumpster diving.
Pochadiva: “Some Tomato…Garden Queen” She measures 20" long....she has legs! She is made of fabric as you can see with an old tomato pin cushion for the head. She is ripe for lots of sewing and things can be wrapped, snapped, glued and/or tied to her as well.
Helene: “ECLECTICA!!!” Porcelain doll head …obviously in need of some kind of brain bucket since I ripped off her wig...Torso and arms: remnants of this art project of Angels dressed in gowns made out of vintage christening dresses, with wooden wings... Legs: plastic lab tubes...attached to the bodies by putting them on the corks...removable for shipping! DON'T BE AFRAID TO LOAD HER UP! AND as Ruth noticed: she's BALD!!!! Someone hopefully will help her, down the congo line....it doesn't have to be hair either!!!!! hint hint….
Oddbreed: She is sewn outta heavy cotton cloth fabric, her hair is made of funky yarn and my doll measures 16 inches long, wow, but she bends in all directions, you can’t see her hair well in the pic but it’s pink, and I love red so maybe I will make her an evil twin with red hair…..
Jewels: “Miss Kitty Fish Sticks” She’s my silly cat doll. She's made from a Campbell's soup can which has a little door with hinges on her tummy. You can put whatever you like inside.
The head and feet are ceramic.
Nanner: “Pinocchio Revisited” He's cut loose of his puppet strings…. off to raise some heck.
If you would like to make notes of your construction process along the way for each doll, that is optional. I am going to include a page for each participant with my doll for some brief notes...nothing elaborate. Several of you have expressed an interest but please don't feel any pressure along these lines.
Feedback is always welcome!
Feel free to post pictures to show off your efforts.

So HERE you ladies are! Woo Hoo! Let's doll this...er....let's DO THIS! Sorry you didn't get clearance-Clarence to technically host us Junkster (and art doll Chronicle mama!) Thanks to the Bonster Monster for stepping in.
LOVING the doll starters we have going. I am digging through my treasure trove to see what speaks to me as we speak!

Oh...forgot to mention...but you can probably figure it out, my doll form is totally fabric right now so easy to sew stuff onto. Thanks art_junkie for creating the specifics of the swap...it was perfect so super easy to post. My other doll has a larger unripe tomatoe pin cushion head as well. I showed it to Helene at our club meeting on Thursday and she liked the head also. I've had this stuff laying around here for years!

great start to the dolls ladies! i had made a cloth doll some years ago and tossed er in the "to finish someday" box, when we all decided to take this journey, i realized she would be the perfect fit for this type of thing!

I can just see the prob with our AA Art Hoarding meetings. Everyone presents their hoarding stories while sharing photos of the piles and boxes of supplies. But we all just look at each other and say "I don't see the problem here!" and "Hey, is that a box full of porcelain doll heads...score!!!"

Bad pet hair story. My mother once sent me a trout-sized wad of cat hair she had brushed off her cats. It was a gift for my cats, something interesting for them to "sniff".
My cats were incredulous, their little noses out of joint as if to say, What we don't shed enough hair, you have to import it!?!?"

Hahaha. I can just picture it.
Here's my silly cat doll. Sitting amongst the mess on my craft table. She's made from a Campbell's soup can. The head and feet are ceramic. I made them years ago, they were stuffed away in a box.
Not sure about a name yet. Any suggestions?

Jewels
02-10-2013, 10:35 AM
I wanted to include something like that. At least a blurb about the doll's story. Maybe a booklet for others to add to if they want. I'd love picture of the stages.

I liked the idea of a journal or paper or atc to follow the dolls, but made it optional for the participants.
If a doll comes with such an item I'll add to it, but my doll is traveling with only a name (Keeper of the Garden Gate) and a note about construction.
As to a trap door on Miss Fish Sticks, HA I GET IT FIRST!

Just read the newest comments and I can't add anything to my box...it's all sealed up.
All I put in there is bubble wrap and a little note about what Eclectica is made of and what she likes (with a "NO clown" stipulation! ha ha)....but if anybody is so inclined to leave a little note of their own...feel free to do so and I will put them together at the end.
LOVE the cat doll....hummmmm...that is pretty daring of you to send Miss Kitty Fish Sticks my way....Just saying! :biglaugh:
Ruth, make sure you leave some room in that trap door for the rest of us...! it will be like one of those cache boxes at the top of mountains!

My mother once sent me a trout-sized wad of cat hair she had brushed off her cats. It was a gift for my cats, something interesting for them to "sniff".
How sweet is that! That is a mom's love! Very cool...
My sister in law who is an art teacher, visits every year with us and we try to do some kind of art project every time. Last year she gave me a book: "Crafting with cat hair - Cute Handicrafts to make with your cat"...
Yes... it does say WITH your cat! like they are going to sit there, felting their own hair into a coin purse or a pin cushion!
BUT I must admit I have started collecting the wads from their hair brush so I can make ATCs with it!!
Any takers?

Ok....I will make a page for each doll I receive and I will include a page for each person to make notes on about their construction on my doll...it doesn't have to be real elaborate 'cause I know everyone is super busy. It will be kind of cool to have the 5 pages together at the end though!
I agree...love the tin can box for goodies idea. Can't wait to see what devilish things I see inside there.

Oh I forgot to say that Oddbreed's Bohemian Gypsy lady has arrived, safe and sound.
How many things are we supposed to add to any one doll, anyways? Just whatever we feel like doing?
art_junkie
02-17-2013, 01:23 AM
When adding to dolls, please follow your muse, but leave something for the artists down stream.
i.e. for Miss Kitty Fish Sticks as much as I would love to paint and fill the tin can body, I may just mess with her legs, or just add a collar.
Jewels
02-17-2013, 02:16 AM
A collar sounds cool. but whatever you think she could use.
Oddbreed's lady is a total blank slate, er nude body, so I guess I'll start with undergarments, and maybe socks and shoes.

Actually there is something about the sweetness of the face on Odd's doll that invokes my inner desire to defile Barbies. (Bad haircuts, tattoos, twisted legs with mismatched shoes.)
My best friend's brother was worse. He tried to blow up her Barbies heads or gnawed on their boobs.

This is either a sign of madness, or a milestone for the sisterhood of the dolls...so when I sat down at my art table this morning, it is COVERED in papers, paints, odd bits and half-finished altered bobs for Helene's doll. And I find myself saying (out loud, no less) Eclectica! You are just gonna take over my WHOLE space aren't you?
She is looking me with an expression that clearly conveyed: "Of course, lady. What did you expect?!"
Feel better, doll Mama. Your baby is out in the world kicking ass and taking names on your behalf.

Doll making DOES take over the whole space. Right now I have covered the dining table, the couch, most of the floor, and if the cat isn't careful he is going to get glued to something.
Three boobs seems to be a theme here, maybe we should have named this the 3-Boobs swap.
Helene

I'm really not stealing your idea of the 3-boobs Ruth...that has your name all over it...I have to come up with my own evil plan! ha ha....
I am feeling a bit better...still have trouble breathing through my nose though...which made it tricky when my dentist was cimenting my crown on today!
I did explain to SomeTomato, that I was not ignoring her BUT that I am letting all my ideas stew for a while to make sure she will be happy with me!...She understood.

I know what you mean about "sad to see them go". I was talking to the fiance' last night (*cough*...still getting used to that term) about Eclectica. Rich has been out of town for two weeks, so he hasn't met her yet. But I am filling him in on how Eclectica and I have been sorting and altering materials to bring her to life. And how we had a "breakthrough" moment yesterday. I will miss this girl when she moves along on her journey!

:biglaugh: I've had a few envies like that. So much tape that it's nearly impossible to get open. Certainly not without a sharp object.
Did anyone have a chance to work on the dolls this weekend? The Gypsy Lady is coming along nicely. I worked on her top. It's a white peasant blouse. I've got some leather from an old deer hind that I'm fooling with today. Trying to make a laced leather ?corset? Never sewed leather before. And don't get me started on trying to put the holes and laces in it! I ended up using a paper hole-punch (oh my aching hand!) because the leather punch simply wouldn't make the holes big enough to thread the lacing through.:arghh:
20 holes later... finally. Next step thread the lacing in and take a picture. Maybe post this evening.

Our homegirl would like you to observe her latest and greatest additions, including her altered legbone (which will glow in the dark) and her mixed-media nameplate heart (which can easily be removed so that others can work on her lovely torso.)
So, the breakthrough/happy accident: The base of her nameplate is made from an earring. While spraypainting the earring, I noticed the gorgeous pattern it left at the bottom of my paint box. It was so pretty, I used this pattern to gussy-up Eclectica's bare bod. Even after she is all dudded up, we'll know that underneath she is rocking stunning skin! Construction notes:
Inside of can is lined with sewn sequins. A silver chain is sewn into the inside ceiling. There are copper hooks fastened onto the silver chain if other artists wish to hang things inside the can. A vial of extra hooks is included.
The fishnet leggings have holes in the tulle for inserting treasures.
The kitten has a hole drilled in him for ease of attachment if someone gets the whim. He also needs a name, though based on the circumstances of his conception ( Rt 66), I like to think of him as "Neon".

Flea markets, thrifts stores. Really I was stumped until I came across a 50 cent bag of sequins at the thrift store. It also had the plastic jewels & pink roses I used on her insides.
The front hasp has a piece of rutilated of quartz I set in silver back in '99. I mounted the jump ring on it wrong and never took it apart to resolder. In her booklet I describe it as included in the sequin bag

So...I'm flipping through the Chronicles book...
(I got a few more minutes before I HAVE to get ready for work...The more delaying, the better it is!..)
...and it is so inspiring!
The most difficult part I suppose is to decide when to pass it on to the next mentor!...
My head is going:
"ok...that's enough...You got to leave some blank canvas for everybody else...let's see...there are 4 more people after me on this one...so I mentally divide the doll into 4 areas that need stuff and it seems about right...but then I doubt myself...and wonder if I should add just one more thing or edit a little more of what I have done so far...etc...":chatterbox:
My hands are going:
"...MORE MORE...let's do this and add that...oh and one more thing...yeah!...don't stop...you're on a roll...the heck with everybody else!!! (selfish little greedy antsy hands that they are)":wideeyed:
And on top of that, the book shows the contributions of 9 people, so you have to take that in consideration when trying to gauge if "enough is too much" or vice-versa.
I don't want to be over-bearing and I don't want to let anybody down either.
I am tempted to go less if I'm working on the early stages of a doll and more as I will be working on the later stages of a doll.
Are you guys as 'anal' and 'insecure' as I am???? or I'm just over-analyzing everything?

Bonster, I had to google "trench art (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trench_art)", but now I get it and YES, it sure does look like that!
You did stellar work, Odd. All elements are thoughtful and funktastic! THANK YOU!

Yes...my trench art description is a loose interpretation but it kinda works. My sister has collected several genuine pieces over the years. I think they are pretty fascinating.

for some reason everything i did to the guy just fell into place, reminded me of when i was a smoker and seeing the malbro commercials, with the cowboy... people always saying you had a monkey on your back cause of the habit...
be careful when you open him up, his legs are made of wire and i left a spikey barbwire type joint on em, he's mysterious and dangerous all the same time:P

Mysterious and dangerous. Whoa Nellie! When I was working in Wyoming I saw cowboys wearing yellow rain dusters on horse back herding cattle.
I damn near drove off the road....

LIEDERHOSEN!!! Never trust a wannabe man-boy with no pants.
So, Eclectica left for Auntie Oddie's this morning. She made me empty my wallet so she could have some spending ca$h along the way. I think she may be thinking of partaking in some of the...ahem....AGRICULTURE...ahem...of Northern CA on her way to WA.

Gypsy Lady has packed her box and headed off for New Mexico. I added a tambourine and some seashells into her suitcase, as well as stamped a Saginaw, Mi sticker on her case. There's also a write up about what I did to her while she was here.

Welcome she came here with the suitcase. It was empty and had no handle. So I guess we should put in little stuff as she journeys.
Do you think the tambourine turned out okay? It's just a Canning ring maybe I should have painted it. Worry Worry Oh well, it's gone now.

*raises hand* another Ex-maid (hotel housekeeper) alumni. $2.35 an hour.
But the houseman, whose teeth were visibly floating, would wander around the halls and place a $50 on the mattress telling the housekeepers that could be their's....
