If you think 3 heads are better than one when it comes to making ATCs this is the place for you.

We are a fun group of ATC makers who like to spread the making of ATCs around to more than one person.

Here is how to get started……………..

First you sign up in the thread and tell us what themes you do not want so I can add your name to the list in the 1st post.

Next you PM your mailing address and any dislikes to me so I can add it to the address list. I will update this list as players come and go or change their status.

If you wish to take a break from playing at any time all you need to do is post in the thread and send me a pm. I will move you to the HOMERS ONLY section of the address list until you ask me to change it. This way you will still get any you have started that have been completed by others but you should not get any new ones. If you do get new ones, please let me know in a pm.

And here is how a Round Robin works…………

Player 1 starts it off by starting 3 cards. These cards need to be more than a preprinted background. Please put something on them. On the back please put ATCS FOR ALL RANDOM ROUND ROBIN or AFA RANDOM RR at the top (so we know where it came from as there are 2 round robin groups) along with at least your user name. Mail all 3 cards to Player 2.

Player 2 will work on the cards. Add at least your user name to the back. Mail all 3 cards to Player 3.

Player 3 will finish the cards. Add at least your user name to the back. Keep 1 card and mail the other 2 back to Player 1.

Player 1 will keep 1 card and mail the other one to Player 2.

VERY IMPORTANT ~ Please note you must look at the first post before sending cards to anyone to make sure they are still playing.

EQUALLY IMPORTANT ~ Please check what cards a player DOES NOT WANT. Do not send unwanted themes to anyone as they must pay to send them on to someone else .

If you get a set of cards and you have no idea what to do with them, just send them on to someone else.

Part of the fun of being in a Round Robin is seeing who is doing what so when you receive a Round Robin and when you mail them out please try and remember to post here. Although there will be no Round Robin Police sent to visit if you don't! And you never have to say who you are sending to unless you want to.

Feel free to post eye candy whenever you want.

And last but not least…………

iTraders are fun to give and get so please remember them. Once you have a completed card you can give them to both the other players.

Hmm, there's probably a way to follow this thread without replying to a message in it, but I don't know what it is, so I think this is easiest!

katelnorth, right above the first post is a box called "Thread Tools"; you click it, and then click the bottom option "Subscribe to the thread", then you have to confirm that yes, you do wanna subscribe, and then you're done. ;)

I have all the boxes checked. I hope that is what is wrong. I am having a difficult time figuring out if the boxes need checked or not checked and what ones. I didn't expect this sight to be this involved. Of course not being the sharpest crayon in the box doesn't help either.

Adorable little kitties! Love those!

I remember being overwhelmed on this site too. It seems so extensive and complicated at first. Eventually I found a few places that became regular "stops" for me. There's still a lot I miss though.

I've been lurking at the thread for quite a while now, and I really like the idea of a round robin! How would I go about it though? Would I just create three backgrounds and send them of randomly, or should I make arrangements with two other players first?

prayer_at_night
02-18-2013, 06:43 PM
MissCarryMary, first you need to PM xstitcher your address and likes/dislikes so she can add you to the address list - she sends that as a PM to all players, then.

On the list, there are the regular players and the ones that are on "homers only" status right now, which means they don't want to get new RR sets right now.

From the list of players not marked as homers only, you can just choose someone randomly as your second player, and that person then chooses the third player.
The only thing you need to take into account is the dislikes of the players, apart from that you can just surprise them with your starter cards. :)

Thanks for your quick reply! You've answered all my questions :) I'll send xstitcher a message and have a go at some backgrounds. This looks like such a fun group, can't wait to get started!

Tonight I worked on adding something to my first set of cards received (haven't quite yet had a chance to start my own - a few other swap comittments to meet before I do that) - thought you might like to see - if not, look away now! I shan't say where they are going, but they are heading out in a day or two...

Gosh, I'm still a little over-active - sorry if I bother anyone with it!
As it is, I found the box that needs to be checked.
You open your UserCP. On the left-hand side, there's a string of things to click - you click "Edit Options". Then you find the box with the topic Messaging & Notification (it's the second one from the top), and look through it until you read "Private Messaging". There's the box that says "Enable Private Messaging", and it needs to be checked! You save the changes and the PMs should work... I hope.
If you have the box checked and it still doesn't work, one of the mods needs to help!

Boy, that sure seems complicated. I dont remember having all this trouble. Of course that was a few years ago , and the old memory "she aint what she used to be"

It's not complicated at all, really, just three clicks - I'm just so bad at phrasing it understandably! ^^° That's the down-side of not being a native speaker of English.

Also, I had a letter from kentuckydakota in my mailbox - thanks a lot for sending my fairy homer right here and saving me the postage! <3 <3 <3

I have found a bit of time and have been able to stitch up a couple of things for cards.

If we get the snow we are promised tomorrow I may declare it stitching day and get the rest of them stitched, then finished and in the mail when I can get back out of my house.

I really want to get off the homers list, but feel so guilty and embarrassed I can't just yet. I have had some cards for months. That is no way for a leader to lead.....................

Yes - signed up and received a list.... let the fun begin - as a newby to this I'll just wait (can hardly wait though) for a first set to work on - to see what a start-up set can look like (and peak at galleries to see what the endresults can be ;)... Done something like this in the distant past but that was a loooooong time ago.

Just to say I've had a couple of cards in this past week - Round 2 from Big Toe Studio a few days ago and a third round set from Cynthia Sillitoe today. Probably won't work on them for a few days as I have some other committments to meet first, but didn't want anyone to worry about them being lost in the post!

xstitcher
02-23-2013, 11:05 AM
Note to self...........YOU MUST REMEMBER TO HIT "POST QUICK REPLY" BUTTON

I'll try this again..........

Welcome Nicky!

Everyone should have a new list.

And about the list.......... I am only allowed so many characters in a pm or post and we exceeded that when I added Nicky so I removed some words that really weren't necessary and reworded a few things to get enough room to add her and send my short cryptic note.

The next addition means I will be splitting the list into Active Players and Homers Only because I don't think I can get rid of any more likes and dislikes information. And I know I can't get any shorter with my notes!

Unless someone has other ideas! If you do please let know.

ceejay
02-23-2013, 01:37 PM
xsticher ... for what it's worth ... I was just able to copy and paste the newest addy list into my "pictures gallery" on my computer ... now I can edit and change it whenever I want ... maybe just paste & delete updates? Don't know if everyone can do this tho.

to cynthiasillitoe and farretgirl ... many thanks (even though you didn't realize it) for giving me the opportunity to use one of my OWN quotes (Leaving Ourselves Vulnerable to Each other) I coined this on a gift card presented to my stepson and his bride, on their wedding day.

I am kind of interested in playing but I do not like the idea of people just sending me cards anytime. Is there a way to be on the list but only sent cards if they pm me first to ask?

I do not see any of the Do Not Wants in the first post... is it just me?

CynthiaSillitoe

Linda, I have to agree with Cynthia that this group might not be the best fit for you - I joined precisely because of the Randomness, and I'll bet that's true of lots of folks here...

The "do not wants" is on the address list, so it's easily accessible when getting ready to send cards.

Here's a set of cards I worked on as third person. I am hoping these will be ok, Gaibou - I did go back and forth on them for a while as your preferences ask for no animal cards, but the background actually says Butterfly Lady on it, so it seemed to demand a butterfly. Tough decisions! I am hoping to make it to the post office Wednesday, so they can wing their way home...

I know, it's quite a big problem over here. When they sent our students their report cards before Christmas, it took the postal service over three weeks to deliver them within this town, however mail to different countries normally only takes a couple of days... I have been behind so thought I had better check in. I was a juror on a long trial and busy
getting my spring plants in the flower beds and my art room somehow got piled up from floor to ceiling.(guess the cat did that) but all is resolved and now I can play. I mailed 6 envies Friday and 8 today, some of them starters. The clerk at the P.O. told me they were getting very picky about bumps in the envys and she added more postage to 3 of them, soooo if you get any of those you can just take the doodads off..so they will go with just one stamp. Sorry!

I'm so behind in my RR's! But my priority is to catch up. Here is a set I'm ready to send on to the third player, it was started by vick302000. She did the pink egg shape, and I added the hatchling's eyes.

Art101

OK, help here please! I've noticed that there is inconsistency in using the terms "JAM" and "RR". When some artists leave Itraders, it seems the terms are used somewhat interchangeable (even I sometimes call a RR a JAM), and envelopes often say JAM on the outside when it is a RR.

Is this correct (taken from another thread):

A jam is where the host starts one card and sends it to someone else to add some artwork. They then send it to a third artist who finishes the card. It's then sent to the host and she makes copies and sends them to each of the players.

A round robin is where the host starts three of the same cards and sends them to the second person to work on and then they send it to the third person. The third person keeps one and sends the other two to the host. She keeps one and sends the other to the second player. The idea is for all three to have the same, or very similar cards when they're done.

And, don't we leave a ITrader for each of the other 2 players in the RR?

Thanks! I hate to be confused.

Art101, that definition is the reason we changed the title of this thingie from Cont. Random JAMs to Round Robins. I guess there are still sets out there (I know two are sitting on my desk) that were started when we were still calling it a JAM... also, I guess the term JAM is still stuck in people's heads? I know I think of these as JAMs, not Round Robins (much to long, and I like jam, especially home-made ;) ).
It is probably a bit confusing, but then if you get a letter from a player here, and there are three cards in it, it will be a RR, no matter how anyone calls it, right?

And yes, you leave iTraders for your two partners. :)

Thanks for the quick response!

Right, it is always a Round Robin with 3 cards. We don't do JAMs from this list as far as I know.

Don't know how anyone does it......I try to give iTraders as I send out the homers or when I get a completed card, but I am sure I don't always remember and a little PM nudge will be greatly appreciated!

I am guilty...Prayer, Jamming is stuck in my head too....love that word, makes me feel like I am doing something exciting...When someone calls, if I say I am round robining they will thing I am crazier than I am.....I have been putting RR/Jams on my envies...Its dificult to change old habits. Hey Maggie, you always inspire me....My desk is piled high with red,
beige and black vintage paper scraps from a project that I have just completed, now I am going to start ripping, snipping and gluing them to backgrounds and send out to 20 people. That might just look interesting if I frame them all together when they are returned.

mrubyjean
04-09-2013, 02:19 PM

What a great idea, to do a series of backgrounds and then send them off with a set of cards going to everyone. And added interest is that after going to artist #2, they will be sent to #3, so there will be some artists who have the artistic hands on the theme twice. Once when they are player #2 on a card, and once (or more) when they are player #3 on a card.

I'm glad of the recent discussion about jams v RR and itraders - I'd been wondering some of these things and hadn't got around to working it all out. I had a look at the FAQ for info about iTrader, and what I've been trying to do with these is leave iTrader for the other two players when I got a completed card (so, for the ones I'm third one, at that point, otherwise, not until the finished card comes back to me) - it's the only hope I have of making sure I leave iTrader for both of the other players...

As for the whole RR/JAM issue, as I come from a quilting background, I am used to round robins, so it seems a natural term to me - I put CCRRR on the envelopes, which is almost as short as writing Jam :)

Looking forward to more backgrounds arriving - I know several sets are on the way - but I must say, it's also a relief to have all of the ones I was due to work on be out of my house and in the post!

heymaggie
04-10-2013, 10:56 AM
And here I am to add further confusion. Round Robins are just triple jams. When you work on a round robin with me, you are jamming with me. Jam means to colaborate, whether it's on 1 card or 3 cards, or 50 cards. You can use the word jam as a noun or a verb. I started a jam. Thanks for jamming on it with me. Not so with round robin. It's just a noun. I started a round robin. Thanks for jamming on it with me. We all know what we are doing here so let's just have fun and stop worrying about what to call it. Art on mighty Arters!!

PS All my starters are different, so no worries about getting more than one of the same background to work on when you are jammer 2 or 3.

PPS I will be sending out two more starters for the two new jammers, mzspurslasso and Rohan99.

Thanks for jamming with me, everyone!
Send me more round robins!

Hugs,

Nicky

I will probably always call them jams. The group I go to called them jams so I have been calling them jams for many months before I joined this group so I am afraid it might have stuck, calling them jams that is. I have belonged to round robins for things like postcards when I was a kid. Almost the same principle.

Art101 I love what you did with the eggs. I can't wait to get it back.

So anxiously waiting for the starters sets that are on the way.

CynthiaSillitoe

I think of them as jams, too, in part because what I think of as round robins are more like groups where you send a box of supplies from person to person. I'm trying to adjust.

I got a set from Kate, which HippieVampire started. I hope to work on it tomorrow and get it on it's way home.

I love Hey Maggie's idea of sending out a set of starters to everyone, but I'm not sure it's realistic with my schedule - but I am working my way through the list, trying to send to everyone without repeating, where I can. This summer, I will be in the US for 5 weeks - if I'm organised, I'll try to bring a load of starters with me to mail out while I'm there and save myself a little postage money (it's not happening until end of July, though, so there's quite a bit of time to prepare...)

Received a set to finish today from katelnorth (started by Ceejay). They are so much fun that I can't wait to start on them. Will have to though - won't have time until tomorrow evening.

HeyMaggie is the rr queen. :) do what you can, but only what's fun, not stressful. I hope to get some starters done soon, too.

And speaking of Maggie, just got a great starter set, plus it came in an artsy spring green envelope with frogs and custom postage. Thanks for brightening up my mailbox, Maggie!

Got some cards today to finish, from CynthiaSillitoe (started by LauraM40) - hope to get them adorned at some point in the next few days. And maybe make some starters at the same time!

Okay, I have a quick question; how does one notate what they did on an ATC? I am seeing some ATCs with nothing written about who did what & then I see some that do have what maybe one or two individual people did. I think it is more interesting to see what each person adds to the artwork, myself, but will go with the crowd on the decision....

As long as your username and afa is on the back, the rest is open to whatever each artist would like to put as I understand it. Most put their real name and address to make them easier to mail back. If you want to include info on what you added to the card, go for it. I always find it interesting too.

I find that interesting, too... I go with what the Jammers before me put: if they stated what they made, I'll do it as well, but if they didn't, I won't either.
On my own starters, I write the info down and hope the other players will add theirs. :)

Nicky

Sounds like fun to know who did what, but I've received a few where I was no. 3. On the back of the card were the details of players 1 and 2 (screen name and full address). There was only room left to add my own screen name and full address.. how on earth do you girls manage to add more info?

prayer_at_night
04-12-2013, 08:02 AM
Nicky, personally I write name and address a bit on the left side and put a little info on the right; that way I don't use up any more space than my third. :)

Nicky
04-12-2013, 08:09 AM
aha - I have preprinted stickers with my address details - that leaves no room and with my handwriting I wouldn't even be able to fit my address details to the back of the card - lol

hippie_vampire the cards you completed that I worked on are fine.

Different colors, same words are good with me as the cards stays the same for all.

What I don't want are cards where the main focal point is so different on each card. To me that is not a round robin, but 3 different cards you want me to work on.

May sound silly to most, but it is just one of my many quirks.

I've done my contributions on all of the RR cards I had piled up, and mailed them off today. I was slow with some of them, but my desk is finally cleared of "to do" cards. I was tracking all my RR cards up until now, but I think I'll abandon that duty and just let things flow as they will. Less paperwork means more time for art! :)

Hi, I'd love to join in the fun if that's ok. Will pm XStitcher :)

I have not forgotten about you, honest!

Time is not being kind to me right now. Spent today away from home, then trying to finish up taxes............ can you say procrastinator?

If any of you lovely players want to send her something before your always behind leader can get herself in gear and get it done, I am sure you can pm her for an address or me as I have it.

I would take care of it now, but I am so tired I can't see straight and really don't want to mess it up.

Thanks all and good night. I have the 1 and 4 year old tomorrow. I am sure it would not be pretty if I dozed off while watching them.

I really want to come back and play but am afraid right now I would have to hold on to cards for a bit.

I will think on it some more this evening and just maybe I will bring myself back when I add the new players.

I have some cute little babies stitched and backed that I need to get on cards as starters.

The discussion has lead me to think of something that I'll bring forth here in the thread, that doing a holiday theme can end up not working out so well if the cards do a RR with artists that are not keeping a "due date" in mind. We all think about "due dates" when we enter a swap, but we don't all think about a due date when we participate in a RR.

Perhaps if we want to do a "holiday theme", it could be noted in this thread that there are cards available on the theme, and then let interested folks speak up. It would still be random, but the selection of players would be limited to those who want a holiday timeline?

Feel free to send me any holiday themed at any time. Christmas in April, summer, anytime is fine with me. I have some Fall leaf paper and just bought some embossing leaf punches and made some Fall leaf back grounds just to play with my punches. Any takers?

I try to give myself a two week deadline when I receive new cards, but if I've got some swaps or personal trades going on, those do have a priority. I haven't received any homers yet, but it's always a surprise to see what's in the mail so whenever they'd get back, they'll cheer me up anyway :)

Quick question, I've got some sets right now on which I'm player three. Do I send two of the finished cards to player 1 or do I send one to player 1 and one to player 2?

Nicky
04-19-2013, 06:29 AM
My mailbox has been empty for a while - got a few out there where I was player 2 though. Haven't been able to get some starters done yet. RR's are always such a nice 'break' from doing 'ordinary' swaps that usually have preset themes....

Quick question, I've got some sets right now on which I'm player three. Do I send two of the finished cards to player 1 or do I send one to player 1 and one to player 2? Usually, you send the two finished cards (after you keep one of the three cards) to the first [original] artist. The first artist then picks the card they want to keep, and they mail the last card to the second player that was in the RR.

But if there is a way that it works out better (due to international postage, etc), then you could send the two remaining cards out differently. You might clear it with a PM to the other artist(s) prior to mailing if you think there would be a problem by switching around who you mail to.

Just wondering, anyone ever "ruin" the RR cards? I've come darn near that a couple of times (usually it is due to applying watercolors to a non-watercolor paper, of which I know better than to try, but that doesn't stop me ....).

kentuckydakota
04-20-2013, 09:58 AM
I had one set I thought I'd ruined-glitter glue run amok. Thankfully I was player 2 and player 3 did a wonderful job so the cards actually turned into favorites for me. I think the cool thing about these cards is that they're collaborative. Thankfully, even if they aren't perfect there's usually something to love about them.

Thankfully, even if they aren't perfect there's usually something to love about them. Nice thought. :wubclub:

One of my best "salvage" tricks is making use of the stack of really heavy books that sit atop my filing cabinet. When I have problem cards (due to the water, or wet glue), it is amazing what day under that stack of books can do to reglue a card, or to press it back into a flatness. (The cards need to be put between plastic of any sort, to protect the books.)

EDIT: Here's the cards that I had put water (ie wall paper glue) onto the non-watercolor paper, but they turned out OK thanks to the heavy books trick. Now I'll send the cards on to a player #3 for them to finish, and I'll wish them luck! :v_spin:

Here are some finished cards by Kentucky Dakota, Hey Maggie, and Art101 (me). I am getting smarter about keeping water off of non-watercolor paper, this time I painted flowers on a strip of WC paper, and then used a glue stick to attach the strip onto the card. No warping. :)

If there is something on the card that needs special handling I think it is nice to have that included with the card.

The cards Art101 displayed earlier in this thread had a note included letting me know the paper was watercolor and would run if it got wet.

Once I messed up a card with the hot iron I attach my contribution with. It looked ok just different so I kept it since I was the 3rd person. Now I am more careful and try to keep my iron only on my stuff.
