This swap is for a 3-D art doll collaboration,
The concept: Mail dolls among six artists, each artist contributing something to the work in progress. In the end each artist will receive back her doll with the art work and additions of the other 5 artists.


Rules for a rotation like this;

There are no withdrawals.

You will need a starter doll; torso,body parts you got from a store and put together.
If you would like to circulate some sort of journal with your doll so each artist can remark on their efforts when working on your doll, you may make something for this to include in the box when shipping. Nothing elaborate, but with 6 pages so each person can journal….or record your dolls rowdy partying while at their house!!

Postage & Mailing:

You will need some sort of mailing box that will hold your doll and last for six months of being opened repackaged and shipped off. No larger than 9x12 inch box to keep mailing costs down, no smaller than a small priority mailer from the US post. These are 3D dolls that will be shipped and mailed each month.
Dolls need to be mailed ON OR BEFORE the 15th of the month to the next artist in the travel plan.

Here is the doll I am working on, I nailed a plastic face to a pineapple and the pineapple head has been glued to a cigar box. It's under 7 inches tall.
I have cloth arms and legs that I am sewing....
don't expect any fancy stitchery...but then again....that will give it character right??

We have family that sent the kids some "vintage" fake fruit and veggie toys, I ripped this off just knowing the potential it could be for me!! HA.

so, I have never done an art doll swap like this. How much of the doll do I make myself? Head torso & limbs?
also, does the weight matter or are we using those anything-you-can-cram-into-it-for-one-price priority boxes? the idea for my torso piece is heavy.

I think at least a head and torso, limbs are up to you, but a good thing that someone could add while working.
9x12 box is the biggest. If you mail to Juli and it is really heavy then maybe slip her a treat in there or something. I would try and shop around for adequate boxes OR if you know yours is going to rock the scale then just go for priority- so that the weight doesn't effect the shipping.
I am really new to the world of mailing. But I think we are going to be across the board here with sizes and weights. Which is why we decided a 9x12 box 4" deep should be max.

just my thoughts here, but I am going to "try" to stay away from heavy with my doll and my adding pieces. Every time I go to the PO I am in fucking shock as to how much it is to mail something across the states because postage is going up. I just mailed earrings and a pendant to Canada and it cost me 8 bucks in the smallest padded envy size; 4.75 x 7, and to send to California the same size and weight is $5.00.

I just sent something to Canada and it cost $6.00...and the host only requested $4 for return postage. I gave her a $5, thinking I was generous until we found out the cost of the envelope.

The tighter I wrap a package the cheaper it is, weight is also a factor but I try to leave little room left over. Sending a Tshirt to the states costs me $7 and change.

RE the journal thing: Jewels in our swap has a little photo journal that is traveling with her doll. It makes it easy to add to without getting knotted up over the drama of making a bunch of HP/HD artwork.

3 DAYS AND WE mail or before the 15th, mine is going today!

I have a few confessions.

#1 I signed up for this swap without ever having owned an art doll or really knowing what one was. Why would you do that BigKay? That makes no sense and is dumb. That may be true but I couldn't resist.

#2 I abandoned my original plan because it called for a really heavy vintage camera as the body and would have cost a zillion dollars to mail around.

#3 I'm still not sure I know what an art doll is but I collect bobbleheads, so my art doll is going to be a bobblehead.

#4 All of your dolls are awesome and make me wonder if maybe I made mine wrong. But it's mine to keep when the exchange is over, so that's unpossible, right?

#6 I am attaching a photo of my guy. I painted the head but only because that made sculpting it easier. You can all repaint it however you want. The arms and legs are easily removable if you want to hook him up with some prosthetics. (I am not attaching the head and the spring to make it bobble until I get it back because I have received enough bobbleheads in the mail to know that it will break before it gets back here)

#7 If you are way more experienced than I am and know that the video card body is a bad idea, let me know and I can whip up body made from cloth or a box.

Everyone post in here when you recieve your doll and perhaps put some of your progress pics!! Half the fun will be to see how the dolls are morphing.

*Disclaimer on my doll- the legs are very easily removable...I attached them with brads (super cheesy brads too ;)
So if you decide when you get my doll that you have a better idea for legs or whatever I am okay with them being scrapped for something new or altered any way you want.

hello ladies, I mailed my robo doll out to lovefroud late! But as of Wednesday it is on its way. I had a hard time deciding what kind of box to mail it in but I figured it out. I opted for a way too big box to give him room to grow but it is very light so mailing was pretty cheap ($4.50 w/ tracking). The tracking # says it should arrive tomorrow.

i also received juli's little bundle of love, which I have been staring at adoringly since it arrived.

Here is Juli's doll after 3 weeks at my house. She got her hair did, slapped on an apron, and fried herself up some bacon legs - chain smoking all the while. I didn't permanently attach the cigarettes and the apron. It's her outfit, so you can take them off. Which she did. Often. Good times.

Love those legs!!!!! Here are some pics of Mere's dolly. The arm is removable - it sits on a hook. I didn't glue the tiny dancer piece down in the box to make it easier for someone else to work on the inside of the box.

Juli, I felt that way with your doll too. After I made the legs, that didn't seem like enough, so I did the hair. That still didn't seem like enough so I made the apron and the smokes so they could be removable. That way, if someone needs the extra space to work, they can just take her clothes off!

Here's what I've got going on with Amy's dolly. I added some gold to the book pages. The fox mask is removable and the heart is attached but I think clothing could still go on top of it if anyone is so inclined. The post office looked kind of insane so I'm going to mail tomorrow.

here is lilli's baby girl . . . i reattached her limbs with pink wire, added bat wings i cut from a vintage cigarette tin, painted a few tattoos, eyeliner, and lipstick, then added the found text.

the wings are easily removed by taking off the wire . . . and her hair is still wild; i just have it pinned up while i was working.

Just got Juli's doll here. Opened and in my hands. The halo busted off...might have to upgrade a box here and see if something sturdier will work to ship for the rest of her voyage.

I have another halo to incorporate with Amy's fab halo so no worries, Kitchen Angel is on the mend!

Here's Big Kay's robo-boy thus far. Lovefroud made the awesome wings. ( I attached them with wire but they could probably use some glue to stabilize them. I didn't glue it in case people want to make adjustments later. ) I also gave him some make-up and accessorized his man-pants with lace and a zombie heart. obvs. Oh and a bottle cap chest receptacle. I almost put an eyeball in there but I thought it would be fun for someone down the line to fill it in. He's going in the mail to Amy tomorrow!

I finished up with Lovefroud's a while ago but haven't been able to get to the PO. She is headed out to Juli tomorrow though. I jazzed up her legs with some heart-shaped birthmarks/lesions and made her an outfit - some underwear and a pair of feet shaped boots - both removable.

I received Amy's doll too! Also, lookin' fly. I have no idea what I am going to do with it, but right now, we chillin'. I'm so in love with this fox mask that I am going to put it on my own dolls and take pictures of them while it's here. xoxo
