View Full Version : Foodie A-thon anyone?

TF Balding

Hey peeps! I've been looking through my collection a lot lately & I got to thinking... I NEEEEEDS more Foodie Art!!! So with summer on its way with BBQ & picnic & party just cause ya can season all wrapped up in it, why not toss a Foodie A-thon in the mix?

For anyone who doesn't know, Foodie art=ANY type of art related to or featuring food. Recipe cards, chunkies, inchies, atcs--anything. & I was thinking Open Media (ok, no edible medias, lol). & maybe just a short Athon (3-4 days max), maybe sometime in June? That way everyone has plenty of time to create goodies for it in advance if they don't have time to stop & art the weekend it lands on (you just shouldn't post any art to trade until the actual Athon).

Any thoughts? Ideas? Opinions?

Pfft I'm in definitely!

June will be very busy for me (last two weeks of work, a week's holiday, training week for summer job) but I'd love to try and join in! I like the idea of creating in advance and posting to the topic during the athon - could always give that a shot :)

TF Balding
05-05-2013, 01:12 PM
I know June will be a busy kinda month, but May seemed too quick & July toooo far away. So I'm hoping being able to squirrel up some goodies ahead of time would help. :)

& I've been texting some folks & scheming ideas. I say we include ANY type of art you're willing to trade, be it felt food, clay minis, altered spoons--ANYTHING! :jiggy:
(Also, I skipped breakfast & am cooking a late lunch, so I'm kinda starving right now:laugh:)

Charlie Brown

So maybe your just especially inspired right now??? I'm about ready to try making some hummus for the first time. I love the store bought, but now I'm gonna try it myself.

native killette
05-05-2013, 05:29 PM
Ugh TF I was thinking the same thing, how it would cool to have some foodie kitchen things I put on the walls & counters!

05-05-2013, 06:20 PM
Awesome idea! I'm away for most of June (5-25) but even if I'm away I hope you all have fun!

05-05-2013, 08:02 PM
I have a masher doll but it'll take some trading for me to part with her and other kitchen dolls!

native killette
05-05-2013, 08:07 PM
Please for the love of all that is delicious and awesome, make me a masher doll. :D

TF Balding
05-05-2013, 09:36 PM
Omg that is DELICIOUS!!! And yes! That's what i'm talkin about, Foodie Art!!! :D
i think it'd be AWSOME to see some bigger stuff like that along with all our atcs, recipe cards, ect... !

native killette
05-05-2013, 09:47 PM
Yes. I think I may have to paint something now.

I would love to dine at a foodie thon- how does it work? I've never done one, but have always wanted to- I have some interesting items that could be transformed.

TF Balding
05-06-2013, 01:40 AM
Welp, this here is a thread to gauge interest & toss around ideas for a date. In a couple of days i'll have Carole Cadek put the a-thon on the official list---how does mid-June sound to everyone? Say, the 14th-17th? That'll give us all time to plan our projects & get a good head start on em. :)
Once the a-thon is official, we prepare & wait... & midnight your time zone the date of the a-thon ya start postin art available for trade! Trades are arranged via pm between participants. A-thons are just fun places to get together & mosh around all kindsa awesome creative ideas.
(Hope that explains... if not, i'm half asleep, someone help me out)

TF Balding
05-06-2013, 01:43 AM
Oh, ps... i suppose i should start keeping a list of folks to notify via pm when the official thread is opened.... gonna hop on that tomorrrow--err, later today.

TF Balding
05-06-2013, 08:37 AM
The first week is bad for me... (my kiddo's birthday & I'm likely to be MIA a large part of the week)...

native killette
05-06-2013, 08:50 AM
Make it a two weeker? I could help with hosting the first week if you need help... :)

I am in and thank you for explaining-my brain is defrosting some stuff right now.

TF Balding

@ NK--that might work. :)

@ Brigetgethins-- no problem! ;)

native killette
05-06-2013, 09:50 PM
So what's goin on for challenges? I've obviously never hosted an athon before so I'm gonna go read up. :)

grrrdjules
05-06-2013, 09:57 PM
Hang on, a two-week long a-thon?

native killette
05-06-2013, 10:05 PM
...it is a bit long, but hey why not. Or maybe we could just so a week, but start it halfway through the first week of June and end it in the middle of the second week.

That way I'll cover you for the first half.

I think people might lose wind if we do 2 weeks.. Haha.

One of the themes should be altered foodie themed kitchen utensils/silverware

TF Balding
05-06-2013, 11:07 PM
Yeah... 2 weeks is kinda crazy. I won't be able to host the first full week of June period. Da Hubs & I have conflicting works schedules as it is, & the kiddo's birthday week tends to be a drawn out affair so that everyone can spend some special time with her.

native killette
05-07-2013, 07:28 AM
Alright let's just do it the second week, hopefully everyone can find the time to play. :)

TF Balding
05-07-2013, 01:37 PM
Any other opinions?

grrrdjules
05-07-2013, 01:50 PM
I'm around :)

native killette
05-07-2013, 05:20 PM
Hey Julez, wanna help host? TF isn't going to be able to host but l think I'm gonna do it. When is a good time for you? Also TF if you wanna add a poll you could just to determine weeks. Give like 4 options, next week, and the following 3 weeks.

?

grrrdjules
05-07-2013, 05:35 PM
I'll take a pass on hosting thanks. End of school year, event stuff connected to that, my inchie swap needs to be swapped and I never really know how busy my work will be or if one of Nic's workers will bail or if I'll even have one at the time so I don't make many commitments like that :) Too much scheduling of my time gives me a bigass headache because I'm too busy scheduling other people.

native killette
05-07-2013, 06:42 PM
Well fine be that way. Haha. I hear ya, it used to be busy for me when I was in school, but my son's not school age so it's just like every other month. Ok, so I'll do it myself. I will post when I decide which week. :)

Charlie Brown
05-07-2013, 08:53 PM
Definitely don't like the two week athon idea! Being honest up front, I know I don't have enough steam to make it that long! I think that I'm going to start pulling a bunch of my favorite recipes together and getting some typed up so that I can just crop them as I work during the athon.

native killette
05-07-2013, 09:23 PM
That's a good idea! I like my handwriting but I hate having to write out long recipes. Ugh. Wish I had a working printer. Boo.

So would anyone be up for May 23-26? I just found out my new schedule starts in June so I'd like to do something fun at the end of May.

Charlie Brown
05-07-2013, 09:38 PM
I like T's original idea of mid June for 3-4 days tops!

TF Balding
05-07-2013, 09:44 PM
Yeah, I found out earlier today that my entire month of June is dicey. (But May & July aren't any better). I'm the newest hand at work & all of my coworkers have carved up the entire summer taking va-cas & whatnot. Ima be working more than usual & I have to figure out the family stuff in between. :( Soooo kinda annoyed about it. Was really looking forward to hosting this Athon.

native killette
05-07-2013, 10:21 PM
Yeah CB June would be ideal but unfortunately I just can't see that far head because of the new schedule. I have new clients every week plus my permanent ones. So I think I'll do the end of May so it gives everyone enough time to squirrel up some art to trade and so we can actually get it hosted.

Any more opinions? Anybody want to help cohost so maybe we could do it the first or second week of June? I'll be here to host I just wanna make sure there's another person here to check in while I'm at work.

TF has come up with some fabulous challenges! Sneak peek: veggie stamping as a card element & perhaps a vegetarian recipe challenge!

Vicki Z
05-08-2013, 01:25 PM
I think I'm losing it.
We started out talking mid June (June 14-17)
Then had a request for first week in June (June 1-7)
But thought 2 weeks might work (But June 1- June 17 is more like 3 weeks)
And now it is projected for May 23-26.

I'm not writing anything more on my calendar until this gets firmed up.
I can't read my calendaar now.

But I still want to play!!!!:twitcy:

Evalila
05-08-2013, 01:40 PM
Ditto ***LOL***

native killette
05-08-2013, 01:52 PM
Aww I'm sorry Vicki! We hadn't decided on anything because of TF's schedule.

But it's definitely going to be May 23(Thursday)-May 26(Sunday).

Now please, feel free to add it to your calendars!

When should I post the official thread, right before the start date?

Vicki Z
05-08-2013, 02:11 PM
Thanks for the clarification, NK.
I thought I was going nuts, or had allshammers.

You are aware that there is another athon going May 13-May 19, so yours is going to be directly after it is over.

OMG, I better start crafting NOW!!!!!

native killette
05-08-2013, 02:27 PM
Is that terrible? I'm just afraid if I put it off, I may not have time for it again for a little while. So I figured the sooner the better? Haha. I know! I'm going to be crafting all night! Good thing tomorrow is my day off.

:biglaugh: Allshammers.

Vicki Z
05-08-2013, 02:56 PM
No, not terrible.

I have a full three days in between to make meals, wash clothes, milk goats, and hit the outhouse.

native killette
05-08-2013, 04:01 PM
Ahahahha. Well those are all very important and I'm especially glad you have time to hit the outhouse. Hit it as in cleaning or hit as in using it? Pretty badass if you use an outhouse, just saying. My grandparents got rid of there's a few years back, but I remember using it as a kid. Now it's where they store life jackets & paddles.

So, this will be my first a-thon. Is there a limit to what we create? The object of foodie ala 'art, can be anything that deals with food.

MissCarryMary
05-08-2013, 07:31 PM
Yay for May! Means I can do this athon before packing up my suitcases, awesome :)

native killette
05-08-2013, 07:44 PM
Yes any type of food related art, big or small! There will be optional challenges you can follow for a prompt.

I'm glad you both will be participating!

Hmmm, that's a long weekend here in O Canada - May two-four - which is good but is the anniversary of my sister's husband's sudden death 3 years ago and we tend to do a lot of gathering that weekend with friends and family and outdoor stuff and concerts so I'll be touch and go how much I can play.

native killette
05-08-2013, 09:17 PM
Well I hope you get to stop in because it won't be the same without you. :(

native killette
05-09-2013, 05:42 PM
Soo, I'm altering this for the athon, it's a little wooden doll stove!

@ NK--that might work. :)

@ Brigetgethins-- no problem! ;)

Oh! Oh! Oh! A 2 weeker?!!! :jiggy: That would be awesome!!!:jiggy:

Is it strictly food...or are drinks allowed too?

:D

native killette
05-17-2013, 04:28 PM
It's not going to be a two weeker unfortunately, but yes, food, drinks, booze! All that will be welcome!

bridgetgethins

I went a thrifting today and found some very fine items for the foodie. Fake furit-apples, a pear, some cherries, grapes and then these tiki toothpick forks, these wooden napkin holders, a couple of cook booklets- there were also some wooden spoopns and forks that I didn't get- but now thinking maybe I should go back...Oh and these very, very tacky metal vintage coasters from the Bahamas. I don't know if I can touch them.

native killette
05-17-2013, 05:01 PM
Oooh everything sounds awesome! Especially the tacky coasters! Haha.

I picked up some wooden boxes at the craft store, the tops are sliding tops and they are about 8-9 inches long. Trying to think of what someone would store in it for the kitchen. Hmm.

native killette
05-17-2013, 07:36 PM
Also welcome in addition to edibles are kitchen appliances & utensils. I'm thinking a toaster or spatula chunky? :jiggy:

native killette
05-18-2013, 07:50 AM
Cute!

And the boxes would only hold coasters if they were the pliable roll up kind. They are about 2.5" across

Theresagram
05-18-2013, 12:21 PM

i'm glad drinks are allowed too...we have a full bar and lots of paper umbrellas, cocktail doodads and things! :D

True but I think the actual niche that holds stuff is closer to 2"

So is there an official thread yet?? Athon starts late this week right?

bridgetgethins
05-19-2013, 12:55 PM

Native Killette, I believe.

bridgetgethins
05-19-2013, 01:33 PM

bridgetgethins
05-19-2013, 01:36 PM
Like too many "likes"- like am I like back in like middle school?

native killette
05-19-2013, 02:13 PM
I am the host, Colourful.daze will be the cohost.
I thought I was supposed to open the thread like the day before? If not I can start one now. The athon starts May 23 and ends May 26.

You post pictures of your art whenever you finish them to the official athon thread, and then if someone is interested, they will PM you for a trade.

I will post some brief how-to directions when the thread goes up.

05-19-2013, 03:18 PM
