~~Hand Drawn Round Robin and Buddy Cards~~
We are a fun group of ATC artists who like to spread the making of ATCs around to more than one person.

Here is how a Round Robin works…………

Round Robins(3 player cards)
*Player 1 starts 3 hand drawn 2.5" x 3.5" atc cards. On the back please put AFA HD RR at the top so we know where it came from. And at least your username. Mail all 3 cards to Player 2.
*Player 2 will work on the cards. Add at least your user name to the back. Mail all 3 cards to Player 3.
*Player 3 will finish the cards. Add at least your user name to the back. Keep 1 card and mail the other 2 back to Player 1.
*Player 1 will keep 1 card and mail the other one to Player 2.

Buddy Cards (2 player cards)
~Player 1 starts it off by starting 2 hand drawn 2.5" x 3.5" atc cards. On the back please put AFA HD BC at the top so we know where it came from. And at least your user name. Mail both cards to Player 2.
~Player 2 will complete both cards. Add at least their user name to the back. They will keep 1 card and mail the other one back to Player 1.

Jams are not a part of this thread. Jams are when player 1 starts only one card it is passed to two or three other people to work on. Then mailed back to the first person who makes good quality copies for each person who worked on their card.

Read the Rules in Post #2 please...
Lets get started.... PM info to me if you want to participate....

VERY IMPORTANT ~ Please note you must look at the address LIST before sending cards to anyone to make sure they are still playing and are not a Homers Only. ~This is a hand drawn/painted only group.

EQUALLY IMPORTANT ~ Please check what cards a player DOES NOT WANT. Do not send unwanted themes to anyone as they must pay to send them on to someone else .

The Rules please read...

~All cards need to be 2 1/2" x 3 1/2" an excellent way to mail sets is in a single row cut from a 9 pocket page. It not only keeps all three cards neat and together, it fits perfectly and stays flat in a legal size envelope.

~Make sure you have AFA HD RR ATCsForAll- Hand Drawn- Round Robins) on the back along with at least your username.

~"All additions to the ATC must be HP/HD [hand drawn, painted, marker or color pencil art]. Additions can be HP/HD on another piece of paper, cut out, and glued to the ATC. Only HD/HD art is allowed, meaning no collage or gluing of pre-printed materials, and no stamping."

~No gluing glitter is allowed since it can get messy for other players. You may use a glitter paint such as Stickles, which will not shed glitter.

~ only one set of any particular paint technique background be used in this HD group. A paint technique background is a random background usually done on larger paper and then cut into atcs. It does not include a painted background that represents something like a sunset, sky, land, mountains or water.

~IMPORTANT to CHECK the recipients status (Homers Only?) and Dont's BEFORE mailing to someone.

~All Players need put at least their usernames on the back before mailing.

Some of you may find this link useful. Here is a useful Strathmore paper chart... (http://www.strathmoreartist.com/tl_files/content/product_literature/paper_use_guides/sap_media_guide.pdf) I am using Strathmore Windpower Mixed Media Vellum surface140 lb. paper.

OK I will have several sets ready tomorrow. I did these all in copic markers but they are open to any medium.

a bathtub(to kentuckydakota), a squirrel, a sand dollar and a tree they are in the first post. Any takers for stage 2?

Just a couple of quick comments about the paper and backing:

1. 300# watercolour is really thick stuff (almost like cereal box cardboard); when I paint my cards, I use 140# watercolour paper which is already pretty thick, and I've never had paint go through it. I just did a quick experiment with some Alpha markers I have on hand (similar to Copic), and both of these weights of watercolour paper, along with some bristol. The Alphas went through the bristol, but didn't go through either one of the watercolour papers.

2. If you're going to back them to make the backs pretty, I would recommend this being the last step, unless the initial paper is so flimsy that it won't withstand paint or other wet media. When I paint, no matter how hard I try, somehow there's always just a bit of paint that makes its way around the back of the card. (Not soaking through, I think it's just if I do a brush stroke at the very edge, it kind of scrapes some paint off on the edge and gets onto the backside.) I once did some cards where I backed them first and then painted, and ended up getting paint on the backings of almost all of them. :(

Linda4atc
05-31-2013, 06:48 PM
OK Thank you Sesshanach. I will make the backing optional. If anyone does back a card after it was worked on by other artists they would have to transfer the info.

QUESTION Just for my clarity. If a player begins in one media, do we need to stay in that media? In other words, if a player starts a watercolor I can't add acrylic or pen but need to watercolor it as well?

ANSWER No I think most cards will be open to artist choice on mediums. BUT Player 1 does have the option to limit it to a specific medium. When this happens, and players follow the rules, you should not receive cards in a medium you have not mentioned.

kentuckydakota

Thanks Linda for that clarification. And I'd be happy to work on one of your starts. I especially like the bathtub but any would be a treat! :)

~This thread is for hand drawn, painted, marker or color pencil art. No collage or stamping.
Question:
Sometimes the first or second player (in the other RR) will use watercolor or another medium that cannot have water successfully added on top of it. One way around this problem (when the next artist wants to use, for example, watercolor) is for the 2nd or 3rd artist to do their artwork on WC paper, then glue it to the card. It is all "handpainted". But, technically, it has a collage-like feature of something being glued on. Another example, sometimes I will add a piece of hand-colored-transparent-paper, gluing it over the top of a background. Again, it is "handpainted", yet has a collage-like feature.

Also, some paper cannot have watercolor (dampness) put on it without bad things happening.

Here is a sample of something I added, it was a hand-painted stripe of flowers, which I glued on to the card (since I could not watercolor over background medium). So it was handpainted .... but glued on (collaged). Is gluing on hand-painted or handdrawn/colored items OK, or not, in this RR?

kentuckydakota
06-01-2013, 02:57 AM
That's a good question. I've had to do that too before with watercolor or acrylic backgrounds. I think it would come up with a pen background too if it was dark.

I'd like to join in, here are some starter cards that might work for this thread. There are two sets of three cards each, and all are watercolor paint on 140 lb watercolor paper.

One set is totally covered with color.

The other set has a frame effect where the center is still white (unpainted), and there is ink around the frame.

So, how does this work again, how are cards claimed? Do people ask for them? Am I supposed to be saying what types of mediums are acceptable on the cards?

[Many of my decisions will be based on if we can use the technique of gluing on our handdrawn/painted additions to the cards. See above posting #10.]

Linda4atc
06-01-2013, 10:49 AM
Well you ladies have more expierence than I and I had thought of that problem myself. I don't see a problem with glueing.

Player 1 has the option to limit a medium used by stating so on the back of a set. If they do not want the cards glued they can say so. Also in the participant list a player can list in the don'ts if they do not want to work on such cards.

Art101 your flower strip is lovely on those cards. I love the two starter sets and would love to take one.

Linda4atc
06-01-2013, 11:00 AM
As for the question about player 2 (player 3) Anyone in the continuous list can be sent cards anytime. Personally I thought I would post my sets for a couple of days and give people a chance to ask for a set first. My tub set is the only one taken so far, so when I head to the post office I'll pick peoplee for the unclaimed sets.

Linda4atc

A little tip for you all. Make your sketch on tracing or thin copy paper and outline it in black. Then you can use a light table to draw it on all three cards. I use this technique for a lot of my art. Another advantage is that you keep the sketch and can reuse it again and again. It may not work if with very thick cards. I actually have a good light box I picked up years ago in a thrift store.

Hi, before I can finish my list of preferences, is there a decision about being able to glue on additions to the ATCs? If is "yes" to gluing, then maybe change the rules to something such as:

OLD: This thread is for hand drawn, painted, marker or color pencil art. No collage or stamping

NEW:
"All additions to the ATC must be HP/HD [hand drawn, painted, marker or color pencil art]. Additions can be HP/HD on another piece of paper, cut out, and glued to the ATC. Only HD/HD art is allowed, meaning no collage or gluing of pre-printed materials, and no stamping."

Hi Linda, thanks for sending out the by PM the first address list.
Based upon some of the comments on the list, I have a question about:

"MEDIAS: I will work on cards in these medias:
Color Pencil ~ Markers ~ Acrylics ~ Watercolor ~"

Are we to answer it meaning:
"I will accept cards that have been done in these medias"
or
"When I receive a card, I will add my work in these medias"
??

Thanks.

kentuckydakota is correct. I put that because some card sets may be designated as a specific medium by the first player. I don't think this will be so at first, but maybe later when we get a feel for each others art. Then for example, three of you may want to do a all watercolor or all acrylic set.

Linda4atc
06-05-2013, 11:53 PM
I put three sets in the mail today. We gotta really watch the status lists because my very first mailing I almost sent a set to the only person who is temporarily on hold, duh, LOL

I also screwed up one of the tree cards so gotta make another before mailing them.

Art101
06-06-2013, 05:13 AM
I'm sorry, but I still am not clear in my understanding of what the Medias[media] designation is indicating. I'm still wondering, are we to answer it meaning:

"I will accept cards that have been done (started) in these media"

or

"When I receive a card, I will add my work in these media".

If you look at the PM'd list, it seems artists are answering it both ways.

MEDIAS: any medium is fine with me
MEDIAS: ~ Markers ~ Acrylics ~ Watercolor ~Chalks ~Gouache
MEDIAS: mostly markers, but can do some watercolor or acrylics
MEDIA: will work on all media(not oils)
MEDIA: colour pencils, watercolour, acrylics

dang....just got my envelopes decorated, addressed and ready to go and see I am supposed to ask first...sigh...why didn't I see this thread before...don't know how I missed all this..sigh.I made some backgrounds ...monoprints w/ block printing inks. Was sending a set to Linda4atc and mariloupatch. I included a small practice piece for each player as the medium is different, but explained that acrylics and pens would work over it or it can be lifted w/ water. What should I do now???

I agree to the painting and attaching....can more easily paint the same thing and get it right before ruining the background.

I agree, especially since we can "glue on" our hand-done additions. It does not matter to me which hand-done medium is added.

But I'll go along with whatever is decided ... but for now, unless we drop the "Media" designation, I still don't know which way we are supposed to answer the question. Existing mediums that I want to work on, or, Mediums that I will add to the card. ?? [See post #26, and how that question is currently being answered differently by group members.]

I am so sorry ladies. This weekend took it out of me. I got on here last night and tried to do my replies and stopped to make dinner. I never got back to it, I was asleep at 8:30.

Help.

"When I receive a card, I will add my work in these media".
Is what I meant.

I think the less rules the easier....HD/Hp is enough for me. Did this in a fine arts group and we managed just fine.

Point taken, I don't have a problem removing stuff. Or even letting someone else run the whole thing. I've just wanted to be a part of some hand drawn/painted RR's since I did a set of SandyMutts.

Art101 I meant it as "When I receive a card, I will add my work in these medias" I will go ahead and remove the media completely to simplify.

Hey Linda, thanks for your hard work in trying to get this RR up and running. I know that any sort of host duties are time consuming, and running a RR thread has got to be time consuming too. :notworthy:

We participants really need to help work it out so that you, the list keeper, has an easy time of it!

Here's what I sent as a PM yesterday: "MEDIAS: I will happily accept cards made with any HD/HP medium. I will add watercolor, acrylic, ink, and/or gouache. I might use gluing for my additions."

Hopefully the other artist that said "no glue" won't end up with one of their cards on my desk. :( Depending on the background, if I am doing watercolor or gouache, I might have to use glued on additions.

We'll get it all squared away, I'm sure, on the wording and stuff.

Lindagiese, You don't have to ask anyone on the continuous list.

I am going to remove the Limited option. But we will keep the HOMERS Only List. It has worked for the Continuous Round Robin thread for a long time. People on that list will not accept any new cards. But they still want to receive their card from any and all sets they worked on.

Awesome. I really want to make this work for everyone.

I am not allowing the no gluing option as a theme don't, since we agreed to allow it. If someone wants to have special rules for a set of cards they can set it up with the three players in advance.

Also I am making a no lose glitter add on to the rules.

Believe it or not Linda4, we still have confusion about rules in the other RR group and it's been going for a couple of years. Everyone is really great at working together though and forgiving when we don't quite see things the same way. I think your idea of simplifying the rules is a good one! Looks to me like we're off and running. :)

two more starter sets http://www.atcsforall.com/forum/gallery/images/259/small/1_RR_6-19-2013.jpg

Speckled background ~ After doing some chunky backgrounds with alcohol ink I took the almost dry applicator pad and dabbed these backgrounds. then I added a bit of green and a lot of blending solution to the pad and did the grass area.

Linda, you have the coolest ideas for drawings, and love those new bkgnds.

Angel: if you are asking about the desert cards bkgnds?
its a Tim Holtz tech.--you stamp water based ink pads directly onto wax paper ( or a silicone mat), and spritz it. the ink beads up and you just lay the paper onto it. as many layers as you like. they are super easy and really gorgeous

Linda4atc
06-21-2013, 08:23 PM
Thank you Sherrie. I was headed to the post office so I already mailed those out to Nicky and Art101.

I don't know what Nicky will come up with on the bodice, (it's totally up to her to decide) but my thought when I drew the bodice was one person could do the top half(head & arms or just head) and the other could do the bottom. Don't know how it will work out.

She might do something totally different and just use the bodice as a garment without turning it into a person...

LindaG: tell us about gelli plates. how is it done? what does it look like?
sounds intriguing

lindagiese
06-22-2013, 03:52 PM
essentially, its a mushy gel about 1/2" thick, solid but squishy, you roll paint onto it and it is easy to press things into it like texture plates, stamps, texture tools and then you press paper on top and make monoprints. I got some printing inks and used them on glass...but with the gelli plate, you can get a much nicer texture from some things that don't work on the hard glass. It is pricey...about $20 for the smaller one (5x5 or maybe 6x6) and $30 for the larger. You can use acrylic paints too. So my bargain paints...plus more bargain paints led to the splurge on the gelli plate. There are tutorials online.

WC paper:
if you really want it not to warp, you need to use 300 lb paper, but it is pretty pricy if you are only doing a few.
I use 140 lb and put it under a good heavy book after it is dry-that usually flattens it pretty well

angelmuz

Oooo guys cool stuff. And yes thanks for the technique explanation on the desert background cards... that is so cool, will have to try it. And yes, i did draw the desert creatures on another piece of paper then color and glue onto the background. I don't think I would have been able to draw directly onto the background and the cactus and actually cover them. seemed to be the best way to handle that

Art101
06-25-2013, 04:42 PM
HINTS:

If using WC paper, sometimes it will warp from moisture and glue by the time the ATC is done. I flatten out a warped card by placing it inside a plastic baggie or page protector, and then puttin it under a stack of heavy books for a day. I use the plastic so that I do not damage the books from paint, moisture, or glue. :)

I'd not recommend putting watercolors "directly" onto anything but WC papers. If you want to add a watercolor object to another type of background paper, you can paint the object onto WC paper, cut it out, and then glue it onto the background paper.

Linda4atc
06-25-2013, 05:35 PM
Mace you gave us the SD address in Rapid City so thats where it went. Thank you on the turtle comments. I hope I didn't make them too big.

Art101 thank you for the tips on watercolors. I know using other papers can be iffy, papers can tear or shred with the water. And you really don't want to ruin a card someone else has started;)

Hi all. I have a suggestion, that the directions accentuate a bit more "please put AFA HD RR" on the cards. Since there is also a Random RR that many of us also belong to, without a heading on the top of the ATC on the back side, it is confusing which RR the card belongs to. (Don't just mark the envelope, but also put it as a heading on the card itself). I hope I have not mixed up anything on my stacks of cards that I'm working on.

Thanks!

Second question. What if we totally screw up a set of cards? I was player 2 and I really botched it up. I even "practiced" first and feel horrible

Gosh I did that on a set also. Luckily, I was able to carefully soak the cards in clear water, and remove my "mess up", then press the card flat again once it had dried out. Then I reworked it.

Maybe if you are out of ideas on what to do, either send it on to another player with details on what mediums have been used on it so far. Or, send it back to the first player, they might be able to "fix" it using more of the original materials.

Whatever you do, don't feel bad about it. This round robin process is supposed to be fun, and as we all learn and experiment, "opps" are just going to occasionally happen. Expecting perfection from ourselves, or others, is not in the spirit of group collaboration and happy artwork.

Now that said, I'll tell this story about how I still feel bad about a certain set of cards I sent out as the first player when I first started doing RRs. In hindsight, I pity those next two players. They did a good job trying to make something out of my ugly starter cards, but I do still feel bad about sending them out in the first place. [Yes, I apologized to both of them after the card was completed.]

Do not worry Mace it is just a piece of paper, although I hope it does not happens to me. We can only do our uppper best. Some backrounds are beautiful but hard to work on.

Yep, and some backgrounds and papers do not agree with water mediums.

Nicky
07-08-2013, 06:46 AM
... and some background are just so full of color that it is almost impossible to add something... lol. But I managed.
I know what you mean MACE - I just PMed the artist to ask for what group they were... in other words - can I collage on them or should I do HD? That's the fastes way - especially since some of us are in both groups

Would you all prefer I do my art on watercolor paper? I know WC paper will suck up the copics, will they bleed?

kentuckydakota
07-08-2013, 01:02 PM
Yes, at least prismacolors bleed on watercolor paper. Sometimes it's an interesting effect. Other times, not so much :) But that's why we decided it was ok to draw/color on another paper and glue it to the background. It's just necessary on some cards. But that's cool. So far the art on these cards has been top notch by the way!

I'm going to "experiment" on some backgrounds. BTW i'm still having problems with cards not straightening out for me after wc them. I've tried books (putting them between pages and putting heavier book on top but its not working very well.

BTW i'm still having problems with cards not straightening out for me after wc them. Sometimes it is difficult to guess what the paper is, and some papers are worse than others if water is introduced. Perhaps the first player should put what type of paper is being used. It could be just put on a sticky note that is sent along with the cards, or on the card itself.

Ditto for what mediums have been used on the card. I sometimes add a note that watercolor is on the card, so that someone doesn't mistake it for acrylic (which is waterproof and smearproof, not like WC, which does crazy stuff if moisture is applied).

re: mess ups....I'm with everyone who says it happens and don't stress. I have sent out difficult backgrounds to work on as I'm using new materials and even I don't know what will work on them. I don't care if you mess up anything of mine. I love funky stuff that doesn't turn out...feel like it is part of life! I leave mess ups in my altered and sketch books for that very reason. I also love abstract and pen work over abstract...so that may be an idea for a mess up as well.

my thought is less water, less wrinkling. I do well with w/c even on thin papers because I use very little water. Usually I'm on location and use travel w/c with a water brush and don't spray the paper in advance or use wet into wet techniques. Have you ever tried ironing them? That is how I straighten out my handmade papers...if they have dried completely, I have to wet them to iron them.

You can iron ATC cards?

marilou
07-10-2013, 03:33 AM
...by preference card face down, but using far less water, you will not need to do that.
Even 180 gr of WC paper does not wrinkle. Good luck

Chris the cranes arrived and they are already beautiful!! Have to decide what fitting addition I can add...

Mariloupatch the adorable Dr Suess houses are here too. It's to bad we are confined to an atc size on those, fitting three artist is going to be a challenge. I almost think it would be a great Buddy Card with just Two artists.

If anyone else is looking for something to do speak up I would be happy to star another set or two. Although I already am waiting on several Homers. :D

Yes I am sure she is just a little confused on the name, she did the same on some cards I received. I added a note on that one but I'll post it here.

For the record to our newest people.

Buddy Cards are a set of TWO with two artists.
Round Robins are the more popular THREE cards and three artists which is to be labled with... AFA HD/HP RR's (or you can spell it out)

Hi Lindagiese,...I put the title of the swap on top of the cards: RR & buddy cards swap
as there are 3 it is for the RR.
Thanks Linda4atc....AFA HD/HP RR's it will be in the future.

Got the Sand dollar cards finished... Started by Linda4atc and brightened up by Art101.
Too bad that the background looks white - in fact it is a lovely shade of light blue but the scanner is playing tricks on me again. Will send one home to you Linda and one to Art101 since I have a set for her to finish and they can go in the same envie.
Decided to add a shell and starfish and decorated the border with small shells too.

Looks Good Nicky. My scanner does the same thing with real light colors.

LindaG the Model A cards are wonderful. You all did great.

Kentucky did you send the other Dr Seuss house to a third already? (Or was it someone else that got it?)

Three more starter sets. Tandy if you want you can have one, I don't think that I've sent you one yet? The fence and mushrooms are on watercolor paper so it would be nice if a couple of our watercolor artists take them....

Linda4: fun new starters. Somehow, i always think of starters as kind of plain backgrounds-I really like that you and marilou start with the focal point. I love hummingbirds, but am on homers for the present.

Nicky:lovin' your seashells and the VERY colorful fish

I had an art play day yesterday at a friends', and did these 4 sets
bird song: angelmuz, lauraM and me-its ready to fly home

big toe studio I did one simple background starter set and I didn't like it as much as my other sets. I just seem to better with sketches. But I love working on the backgrounds you all make. hint hint :D

mariloupatch I have a question? In your don'ts you said Animals. I was not sure if that meant you do not want animals on your cards at all? or that you do not draw animals?? Now I see you love the Mouse (and it just had to be a mouse with the cheese) and you started the frog kiss set, what is your Don't theme?

The reason I am asking at this time is I have your old shoe set, and the lump inside reminds me of a toad, I would like to make it so...
