View Full Version : Zentangle-athon; June 21-24

06-20-2013, 02:46 PM
Begins Friday, June 21st, 12 am and ends Monday, June 24th, 11:59 pm,

“The Zentangle Method is a way of creating beautiful images from structured patterns.”

Let’s all get our ZEN on with your favorite tangles, inks, and pencils. You are welcome to use any mail art size that you enjoy – ATCs, inchies, twinchies, tags, moos, chunkies, rolos, envies, APCs, etc. For trading purposes, however, we suggest you SPECIFY what size mail art you are posting to avoid confusion and frustration  Those new to AFA, the explanation about ATHONs is below.

The hosts (Ibus, dsign49, sharlene54, lv2paint) for ZEN-WEEK have chosen to offer DAILY ACTIVITIES. This is to help expand your imagination, to help you grow your art skills and is in no way mandatory to play. You may choose to use the ideas on the specified day, or any time during the Z-thon, or not at all; we just want you to have fun! For more information on terminology and definitions for this athon, check out the following websites:

•Friday, 6/21 – Summer color; “Maelstrom” tangle; moos
•Saturday, 6/22 – mandala; address tags; “Phicops” tangle; teaching a tangle (showing start to finish)
•Sunday, 6/23 –Stars and Stripes (to celebrate America’s Independence Day); “Yew-Dee” tangle; bookmarks; letters of the alphabet
•Monday, 6/24 – add some color; flowers; “Hi-Cs” tangle; twinchies

Address Tag – same size (2.5” x 3.5”) as ATC, decorated on both sides of the tag. One side is for your art, and the other side is for your address. Download the template HERE (https://docs.google.com/file/d/0BwG8tqSnsUykX1g0NjZ3a1JEczQ/edit?pli=1)– it is an 8.5x11 .PDF file.
ATC - Artist Trading Card - 2.5 x 3.5 inches in size, to be only traded, not sold.
A-Thon - a group of artist getting together for a select number of days to create a certain type of art. The cards are posted and traded in the thread and the Athon Gallery.
Bookmarks – decorated on both sides; can be multiple sizes – 1.5”x5.5” (excellent size for mass-market PB books), 2.25”x6.25”, 2.5”x7”, 2.25”x8.25”; fiber tassel at the top
Inchie - a 1"x1" square piece of art that is painted, collaged, etc. and traded, usually 6-9 in a set.
Moo / Moo card - mini cards approximately 1" x 2.75" or 28mm x 70mm
Twinchie - a 2"x2" square piece of art that is painted, collaged, etc. and traded similar to ATC's

Here's the "fine print"

What IS an ART-A-THON?
It’s a marathon create-your-favorite-art period, done over the same day and time in each time zone.
It’s kind of like we were all together for 5 days to play with our art supplies and this thread is our play room.

HOW IT WORKS: start creating art at the designated time, then upload your lovely creations to your gallery and post to the thread. Continue throughout the athon. Trading and chatting ensues.

HOW TO ASK FOR A TRADE: - When you find a piece of art or creation you must have, please SEND A PERSONAL MESSAGE (pm) to that person asking for a trade. Please DO NOT post requests for trades to the thread. It can get way too confusing.

Note: If you do make a trade, please be sure to send to your trade partner within two weeks. If you’re running late, communicate!

WANT TO COMPLIMENT AN ARTIST: And you will… remember you can click the You Rock button and leave it there.

From your atcsforall.com gallery:
It’s easiest to have two windows open. I can create another "tab" and get to my gallery in one and be in my post reply box in the other.
Internet Explorer
1 Go to the main page of your gallery & right click on the picture you wish to post - this brings up a menu which has “properties” at the bottom.
2) Right click on “properties”, and it will show you "Address (URL)"Highlight the address/url and copy (Ctrl C).
Then follow steps 3 - 5 below
Note: Your picture will come up as large. Most folks use small or medium in the thread.

Mozella Firefox, Google Chrome and Mac Safari (most versions)
1) Go to the main page of your gallery & right click on the picture you wish to post - this brings up a menu that includes “Copy Image Location” (which is about 2/3 down the list for me)
2) Click on the “Copy Image Location”
Then follow steps 3 - 5

3) Go to your post in the thread and click on the "insert image" button (looks like a postcard)
4) Paste the address (right click, click paste or Ctrl P) into the window that pops up and hit OK - that puts the code into your post for your picture to show up; (you paste the address from the properties box over the http thingy that shows when you open the "insert image" box)
5) Remember that images from the gallery are small, medium or large. Most folks use small or medium in the thread. Find the word small, medium or large (or letters s m l) in the address and change it to size you want.

[IMG]http://www.atcsforall.com/forum/gallery/images/400/small/1_Maygar_Posta-traded.jpg [/IMG

(leaving the last bracket off the above so you can see how the address will look)

From your computer:
1. Click POST REPLY at the bottom of the messages screen. Above the message box, click the paperclip next to the smiley face. Then upload as usual. This will upload your picture as a thumbnail.
2. If you go into the Quick Reply box at the bottom of the messages screen, click GO ADVANCED and you will get the paperclip above the message box.

Neener; nice choices to go with the maelstrom.

Everyone: notice that Neener has singed her card.
We all need to be sure we do that-after all, these are miniature art pieces

one more thing, why do we post everything here and in the gallery? just wondering

Lovely work everyone, I need to get myself into gear ;)

06-21-2013, 11:32 AM
Did I hear there is a birthday party at Sharlene's house? Road trip!!!! Happy Birthday Sharelne! :)

Seeing some really pretty tangles to get us started.

I just printed off a bunch of tangle refreshers to jog my memory and inspire me.

06-21-2013, 12:11 PM
Do they have to be pure zentangles? I've been working on some collage cards that have zentangle backgrounds, but if you want to focus just on drawing zentangles, I understand.

Wow, beautiful work being posted here :)

Sorry I've been MIA, I got side-tracked yesterday, Cynthia, very interested to see your mixed cards.

I managed to make 5 Moos (I'm not enamoured) by doing them as a unit and then splitting it, the singles I drafted, I've not managed to get to, so here's my Summery Moos:-

06-22-2013, 06:50 AM
Oh my! real life has distracted me from tangling and I guess I'll only be able to throw something in tomorrow... Thank you so much for the reminder, mine somehow didn't work. o.O

Anyways, there have been postet SO MANY GREAT Zentangles and ZIAs, great job everybody! SO hope to be able to post something tomorrow..

06-22-2013, 07:37 AM
Sharlene I love Z4!

06-22-2013, 08:00 AM
Sharlene, Wolf, Big Toe...fabulous work!:notworthy:

Ibus...I think your moos are VERY cool! :v_spin:

Lest anyone thinks all I do is tangle all day and far into the night...not so! I've been taking my two oldest grands to a volleyball clinic lasting 2.5 hours each session...so I've had some time on my hands while they play and I sit! Zentangle is an easy art form to "take on the road" -- don't you agree?!

http://www.atcsforall.com/forum/gallery/images/3190/small/3_scan0038.jpgZAT #2 (I have never used 'Maelstrom' before so I enjoyed seeing what I could do with it - I like the butterflies, don't you?)

Donna: what do you use for color? are they markers? they are lovely.
and, yes, the butterflies are fun. and love the inchie birdies

I, too, hope you feel better soon

Ibis: your inchies are lovely to behold

anyone have any suggestions for the letters? I have this grand vision of the fancy letters on old manuscripts, but not a clue how to make that happen.
If anyone wants a letter card, I will do your initial for you

this "S" card not available for trade

06-22-2013, 10:45 AM
My colours are normally either Distress Ink markers or Spica pens but in those last few cards I was also playing with Pitt artist pens in sepia and sanguine (the lovely orange brown for the 'Onomato' in ZAT #1 and the 'Me three' in ZAT #4).
I love the colours of these pens but I used the finest tip they come with (0.3mm) and it is a bit chunky for my tastes.

Thanks for the lovely comments on my cards (and ZAT #3 is a whole ATC, not Inchies). I have brunch out with friends tomorrow but plan to make lots more cards yet.

Not quite sure what the theme for Saturday - 'teach a tangle (start to finish)' actually means that we do.
Do we just make a card showing all the steps of a particular pattern? or do we have to incorporate these steps into a design for the card?

06-22-2013, 10:52 AM
Lovely cards. I have made 2 and will have to scan them soon.

06-22-2013, 10:52 AM
You could show the steps and then have a card incorporating the tangle in a design. I'm going to start one now. I finished my food shopping and now the plumber is here. That is my husband's domain.

I love that "S" Eleanor.

More great zentangles Donnacr.

big toe studio
06-22-2013, 11:10 AM
Thanks, Donna, I will look for those brands

on the teaching card, is it any official tangle, or do we have to invent one? I was thinking to put step-outs on 1 side and a design on the other, but that doesnt leave any room for your personal info, soooo
Im thinking maybe a folded card. that would give room for bigger step-outs and a nice design and your info. Whacha think?

Re the challenges for today: I have never done Phicops, nor a mandala, so this should be interesting. see y'all later

06-22-2013, 11:10 AM

Can I make a request of everyone? When you arrange a trade, please move the pic from the Athon Gallery to the Traded Gallery. Some of us don't necessarily look through the thread for what's available, but go the the Gallery first. (At least that's what I do) If you move it, there is much less chance of disappointment. I've had some tears today -- but I'm a big girl and I'll get over it. Besides, "it's my party, and I'll cry if I want to!"

Thanks so much for everyone who is playing and creating such fabulous art :notworthy: This is turning out to be a very good athon so far...

stars with milky way
star w/bead lines
aura star

You rock, big toe. I could never make that many. Maybe a few each day.

Sarat, love those colors.

More wonderful tangles are appearing all the time!

Not sure if this has been answered but I'll give it a try. The reason why some images are being posted so large is this. When you are posting the location of the image you are also posting the size of the image. For example the location of my Rainman image is this:

You'll also notice the size is large because I have highlighted it in red. Next time you post your image manually change that size to medium or small by typing in the word medium or small instead of large and it will post in the thread a smaller size. The larger size can sometimes cause problems in some browsers so medium is usually the best size. I hope this helps. :)

I never noticed that, KES

Sharlene, I had a BIG advantage-I had the house to myself the whole time of this athon. Ahhh blissful peace and quiet

06-23-2013, 03:08 PM
I didn't know it either until someone told me during a marathon. The trick is not to change anything in the location address except the size or it messes up the whole thing. Just the size can be changed - small medium large.

Hiya my friends. Was just browsing the forum and found this a-thon. I don't think I'll get around to playing but I do still two spaces open in a zentangle group in my Mid June PAT if anyone is interested?

Eleanor: how do we move cards from athon gallery to traded gallery?
Is there a command, or do we just delete from 1 and add to the other?

06-23-2013, 03:51 PM
You click on the card from your gallery that you want to move and above it will be a task bar where you click on edit. That will take you to a pull down menu where can move your card. I hope that is clear directions for you.

ZAT 1 Pen and colored pencil. Summer colors theme.
ZAT 2 Phicops and Sand swirls. Watercolor, pen, and graphite.
ZAT 3 Mooka, Paradox, Purk, Betweed, Onamato. Watercolor, pen, and graphite.

ZAT 5 Hollibaugh, Widgets, Yew Dee, Printempts, Paradox, Yincut. Watercolor, pen, and graphite. Using letters theme.

I have to be out of the house for the rest of the afternoon and early evening, but I'll check back in later. So glad that I found this thread by accident today!

Finally found where the Zentangle-a-thon was happening and managed to do a couple of cards today to join in. :)

I've found this really fun and interesting because although I've done zentangling before I've never tried doing anyone else's patterns, I've just kind of freestyled my own. I've never added pencil shading before either.

Ali & Artlady: soooo glad you found us. All of the entries from both of you are outstanding

Sharlene: thanks for the info-going to try it now.

Gosh, that was really easy

bigtoestudio - I actually like your 'Weapon or tool' card with the 'Phicops' facing up (like a vase)

SO many wonderful cards and I tangle too slowly!?!? :arghh:
I want to ask for so many trades but I have little to offer :cry:

Back to the tangles (sneak peek of my first attempt at 'Phicops' - ZAT #7)

Really nice tangles today!

I don't have much to trade either Donnacr but there is so much I would like to ask for. I worked on some strings today - hopefully I can finish them tomorrow and get them mounted on some ATCs for trade tomorrow. I have a sick kitty that needs to see the Doc also tomorrow - I'm pretty worried so I hope they can fit her in.

Ibus - I hope you feel better soon.

It's been a good day for tangling. Thank you all so much for all your beautiful works of art. How fun to have so many new tanglers join in...:spinny:

My brain is now toast. It has been an extraordinary day for me and I need to go absorb everything. Have a good night and I'll see you all (hopefully) tomorrow for our last day of the Zen-athon...

Donna: very nice Phicops

I didnt think of that as a vase, but you're right.
that label came from an older scan-I dont know how it got attached to this card and I couldnt get it off, oh well

nice alphas, Eleanor

KES & Donna: If you do more zens after Mon, be sure to check back to the gallery. Im sure there will be a lot still available

I did get 1 bookmark done, but I used the wrong side of the paper and all the ink is smearing. If anyone is interested, i will redo it correctly

06-24-2013, 01:35 AM
i actually got a few done. i may have a couple more tomorrow. im a Zen newbie but id love to trade if anyone fancies my attempts.

Morning all...some beautiful works appeared whilst I slept. Thanks so much for sharing...:)

06-24-2013, 08:29 AM
Oh my. I should stay up more to check in. I missed a lot since yesterday.

Welcome to all just joining us. And KES and Donna, post whenever you complete your art. I'm slow also doing all cards, not just zentangles. Sometimes it takes all day, off and on, to finish one zentangle card. For some reason, I was able to work a little faster, I think because of the fabulous inspirations I got from the zentangles that are being posted.

06-24-2013, 08:41 AM
Sharlene, these are great! a job well done...

06-24-2013, 10:29 AM
Beautiful tangles one and all. I shall post a couple more shortly. Haven't made as many as I'd like but c'est la vie!

06-24-2013, 11:03 AM
So here are the rest of my tangles.

Zen 5

Zen 6

This next one I did for a PAT where one of the players flaked unfortunately. I though I would offer it up here.

ZEN 7 Originally for PAT. Now Available

Thanks Kirsten, this weekend has been a real blergh one for me and I've been looking forward to this athon since it was booked.
I have nothing to trade, although I have quite a few beginnings, which I hope I will get finished soon.

Elizabeth, I couldn't find the initial post. Which forum is it in? Could you possibly set up a link? I'm all about Zentangle right now (is it that obvious?) and would really like to investigate...

06-24-2013, 02:35 PM
Looks like poor Polly has Asthma of all things. She is such an old kitty to be getting this all of a sudden but we are treating it as Asthma until we know differently. I'm to keep an eagle eye on her this week.

I'm about to go sit and try to finish tangling some strings.

06-24-2013, 05:33 PM
not much good at tangling myself but I wanted to stop by and say that the tangled art in the gallery coming from this athon is AMAZING!

06-24-2013, 06:00 PM
At least tangles are a way to keep busy at work! Man was today slow...

Also, it's weird that they came out different sizes. They're both standard atcs...

06-24-2013, 06:43 PM
Managed to make a few more cards last night/today. :)

06-24-2013, 07:51 PM
And one last quick one... :)

06-24-2013, 08:34 PM
Yesterday and today I've worked on these 9 strings. Some of them I need to mount on ATCs for a swap but the rest I will offer for trade for the marathon. :)

I'll be back with the available ATCs.

This has been a FABULOUS athon! My sincere thanks to everyone who was able to play...gorgeous works of art all around :notworthy: Maybe we can do this again in a few months :wubclub:

I will be sending my trades in tomorrow's mail, so all my traders, you can be on the lookout for them arriving sometime within the next couple weeks.

My special thanks again to the co-hosts -- Ibus, dsign49, sharlene54 -- for helping to make this one of the best "athons" I have participated in...

06-27-2013, 11:03 PM
static embrace - I have just PM'd you for some of your Moos, if you find something you like in my other available cards I am sure that I can find a few more Moos that I like (I already have the numbers chosen :D)

thanks for a WONDERFUL Athon - to our Hosts and to all the rest of the participants
