View Full Version : PAINTathon; Sep 27 – Sep 30

09-26-2013, 11:31 AM
Begins Friday, September 27th, 12 am (your time zone)
Ends Monday, September 30th, 11:59 pm (your time zone)

Any paint medium is welcome…oils, finger-paints, acrylics, watercolor, w/c pencils, heat-set oils, etc. …we just want you to have fun and paint-til-you-faint! ;) You are welcome to use any mail art size that you enjoy – ATCs, inchies, twinchies, bookmarks, moos, chunkies, rolos, envies, address tags, book pages, etc. For trading purposes, however, you should SPECIFY the size of mail art.  Please post your creations to the thread or “Athon” gallery. If you see something you like, send a PM (personal message) to the artist to set up a trade. When that piece of art has been traded, it’s best to move the item(s) to the “Traded” gallery to eliminate any confusion.

Your hosts (mariloupatch and lv2paint) are offering “Daily Themes” for this ATHON. This is to help your imagination and creativity and is in no way mandatory to play. You may choose to use the ideas on the specified day, or any time during the Paint-athon, or not at all.

This is a technique I pinned to my Pinterest board that I want to try today. I'm going to try to post the link for the directions here. I hope it works:

It's for an Acrylic Baking Soda technique

[QUOTE=mariloupatch;1470934]..Eleanor is awake, now we start playing!

Oh, man, worst-athon-host-ever here! Although, in my defense, my husband took me to go buy a new car!!!! It's a sweet ride; we've been a "one-car" family for about a year and a half and I guess he was done. He totally surprised me with this adventure today.

I'm so glad everybody has been painting like crazy...the art is AMAZING! I'm hoping to get caught up here fairly soon...

09-27-2013, 06:52 PM
CAn I just say a big THANK YOU to the hosts for organising this paint-a-thon... I've never been very good at painting.. am okay at drawing.. sometimes. But I've been getting more and more into painting and use of colour etc through my papercrafting and doing ATCs and art journals etc.

I've managed to find time today to get my paints out and have a play at painting some cards and, quite honestly, I've loved it! And I'm so pleased with that I've created! :) Wish I could play more over the weekend but I'm away from home for a school reunion... hope to find time to do some more on Sunday evening/Monday though.

So thanks again for inspiring me to create! :) Here's the cards I've done today:

09-27-2013, 07:50 PM
Ali what lovely work!! Not a painter eh??? I finally got some cards made in between applying for job, and taking friend out for birthday dinner. I will post soon. So glad you got a car miss hostie!! what a fun suprise!!

09-27-2013, 08:51 PM
So much wonderful painting has been taking place today!

Congrats on the new car!

I tried the baking soda technique and got nothing from it - just a painted background. So I'll noodle around with the background some more but I can't see how the baking soda is anything special unless someone has some tips for making it work.

I did play with my distress paints making some backgrounds and this is the result:

Happy to trade if anyone is interested.

09-27-2013, 09:09 PM
Truly gorgeous first effort I.R.! Lovely watercolor work. :)

09-27-2013, 09:34 PM

09-28-2013, 09:29 AM
Hi Char, glad you are having fun. The ghost is just the plain background paper, the only spot that is not painted. And I do not use a white gel pen if needed, no other colours.
Anymore questions...ask away!

09-28-2013, 09:51 AM
Plastic wrap and salt give a cool effect! I'll have to try them some time.

I rarely, rarely, make a preliminary sketch. I just jump right in sketching with my archival micron pigma pens. On some of my ATCs you can see where I wasn't happy with the original line, so I just drew another line next to the first line. Look closely at Race Rock Lighthouse.
Then I begin to color. I almost always use Derwent Inktense watercolor pencils. When I was first using wc pencils, I would color in the picture, then blend colors with a wet brush. But I found I could still see my original pencil lines and I didn't like that. So now, I use a brush dipped in water and draw off the paint from the tip of the pencil. Then I color the card with the brush.
Inktense pencils allow you to go over the original color with a different color without having the colors blend, so you can get a lot of layering by placing one color over another on the card. You can see that with the browns on the Race Rock Lighthouse card and also the browns and greens on the Block Island Lighthouse card. A lot of times I pull color off two or three pencil tips at once before applying color to the card. (My pencil tips get "dirty" with paint from other pencils when I do this, but it doesn't bother me). I never know exactly how the blending will turn out. I frequently use at least two greens in grasses and trees, two blues in skies, and multiple browns for brown things. For greens in trees and grasses, I often use a lot of blue or brown mixed in..I never seem happy with the pure green pulled off a pencil, and it doesn't matter which green pencil I use, I always want to change it. And I use a little deep purple for shadows, rather than black. But I am sure I used a light grey for the shadows on the Sleepy Hollow Lighthouse.
After adding color, if I think that the color has covered up too much of the original black ink, I go back and add more ink, such as the rocks at the bottom of the Race Rock lighthouse card.

That is probably a lot more about my painting technique than you really wanted to know!

One more comment about my art....

Two years ago I got up the nerve to have a 5 x 7" watercolor of a barn critiqued at the Doylestown Art League. My painting was basically the same style that you see here. The art critic said I should use more color and less ink, or less color and more ink. He said it was as if I couldn't decide if I wanted to have an ink drawing or a watercolor painting! I tried painting both ways and I never felt comfortable with the results or even how I felt while painting, so I just went back to my regular way of painting. So I now know that painting just comes down to what you feel comfortable doing (and also that not everybody likes the way I paint!).

Hello All - Some great work here! Sorry I didn't know about the athon earlier!

Jo, I really appreciate your "art lesson" !! and whoever the so-called critic was, he should definitely not give up his day job!!! Some people get so stuck in RULES that they totally lose their creativity . What a shame that others believe them!

09-29-2013, 01:46 PM
Jo thanks so much for sharing all that info.. I love it when you good artists help us "not quite so goods!!" And I am so sorry for your loss Donna, know that many of us on here will be thinking and praying for you.. Its a hard time. I am gonna post here my one and only halloween painting I did last night. And I am reposting three of my other ones I posted cause the scanner was acting up last time. then I will try to get them in the gallery. I want to trade with some of you amazing ladies...!!! Then off to painting some more. This is such a fun challenge!

09-29-2013, 01:59 PM
Thanks Jo for the art class, an idea I do want to try. I hope to be able to paint tomorrow, but early morning I have a dentist appointment, 2 teeth have to go out, and another some days later. Meanwhile she will check everything and we are looking for a "final" solution, whatever that can be. Pffff...not looking forward to tomorrow!

09-29-2013, 02:34 PM
Donna, I'm so sorry for your loss! I hope you will find consolation in art when you feel up to it again.

Jo, it was really interesting to read about your technique! Glad you decided not to mind the critic. You know I like your style a lot!

Gorgeous art has been posted again by all of you! I didn't have time to paint today, after all, but am glad to see what the others have been up to.

09-29-2013, 03:42 PM
am pooped... the acrylic took tooooo much work. The canvas it too little and the brushes too big... Oh well. I'm gonna take a break... keep up the good work girls!!

09-29-2013, 03:57 PM
Here are some from me on the autumn theme. The mushroom and varied thrush are watercolour pencil and the apple is acrylic on handmade paper. I look forward to autumn because that is when the varied thrush return to my neighbourhood.

This is another technique I pinned to my Pinterest board:

And I just gave it a try. I like the results. I'm finding that Tombow is the marker most suggested for it's rich color but I don't own Tombow markers so I used what I had and I think the colors are probably more muted. It's a fun technique.

WaterColor Multi backgrounds

I'm happy to trade backgrounds if anyone is interested.

Sorry to hear about your dad, Donna. ((hugs))

I'm back from my weekend away for my school reunion - lots of drinking, dancing, reminiscing and laughing. :) Managed to find a bit of time tonight to do some more painting and have two cards drying. Will scan and upload them probably tomorrow. Hope to get chance to do some more painting tomorrow as well. :)

Wow...IR, you have a nice set of wc pencils to use.

Actually, I have two sets of Derwent wc pencils. The Intense pencils work as I explained. I had the regular Derwent wc pencils first, and those will continue to blend if you add more water after they have dried. There is a place for both. I got the big set of 72 regulars quite a few years ago, but only got the smaller (36 pencils) set of Intense about 3 years ago. One could do just about anything with the smaller set of Intense because the box has a nice selection of colors. Sometimes you can get them half off at Michaels or AC Moore. I never tried purchasing pencils from Amazon. I think that Dick Blick also sells single pencils from their catalog but their shipping cost is high. As I travel I sometimes see open stock pencils and I have been able to purchase single Intense colors of unusual shades: hot red, sienna gold and cadmium orange came home with me when I was in England this year! Also, somewhere along the way I picked up some water-soluble graphite pencils and those are nice. I don't know if such a thing exists, but I would love to have some water-soluble sepia pencils....though I guess I could do a monochromatic picture using any of my browns.

As I am chatting, this reminds me of two years ago when Joss (only minimally active here now) was asking about my technique. I just quipped "I'll hop on a plane for London and show you how I do it!" to which she replied "Why don't you?" So I did. I visited her two years ago and again this spring. You need to watch out for me....I may come knocking at your door!

Now I need to stop making monopolizing this thread!

Jo, I just love your technique, and have been wondering how you do it. I have a problem with trying to use my watercolors as if they were acrylic paints, but I haven't been able to get the softer look with my watercolor pencils.

Love all the art everyone is making. So sad that this is my weekend to work, so I can't play.

09-30-2013, 02:25 AM
Woke up, got my coffee and checked the thread, wonderful art everyone!!!
Now I am off to the dentist  I am not scared, but there is a lot of work on my

Managed to scan in the two cards I did last night.

Both acrylics on watercolour card, the pastel portrait one I just painted freehand, the bleeding heart one I sketched in pencil first.

The bleeding heart one is my favourite of my painted cards so far - I feel like my painting is improving with each card. :) Btw, it was not supposed to be quite as "bloodthirsty" as it's ended up looking... I made a mistake and smudged some red paint on it so to rescue it I went with the idea and smudged a bit more red paint on her!

Both these are available for trading. :)

I did one card "winter " theme. It was very hard to have the 2 teeth removed, the roots were very big and stubborn. I am on painkillers for the rest of the day.
Keep up the good work ladies.

Can't wait to see what you create.
I tried the acrylic and baking soda background, and I agree that it turns out to be not much for the mess and effort, but it does make a nice background, depending on what one puts on top

09-30-2013, 02:41 PM
oh dear, I was MIA yesterday and look at all the goodies I missed. (sorry to the folks that pm'd me for cards...life got in the way yesterday)

Donna, so very sorry for your loss.

Jo...I also use derwent inktense and reg. watercolor pencils, LOVE the inktense !!!
I found these at Michaels...a little pricey but I had the ole' coupon...got a surprise when using them....they (like the watercolor pencils) are color fast once dried. I really like playing with them.

Mine just didn't do anything and I used the cheapest acrylics also. Maybe my baking soda is too old. Anyway I added to them - they are still drying but I'll upload soon.

Maybe my paint dried too fast - if I do it again I'll spray it with water before I add the B. Soda. Anyway I swiped some additional paint on my backgrounds with a credit card. I think they still need more but wanted to let them dry today. This is what they look like up to this point:

Here's my last few cards for the paint-a-thon, all done this afternoon/evening. I have enjoyed myself immensely doing this paint-a-thon and will *definitely* be doing more hand painted cards in the future. :)

Most of my other paint-a-thon cards are still available for trading so if anyone is interested in swapping please do PM me. :)

These last few cards are called:

Winter Fairy - available (this one is actually painted with mica watercolours and has a fabulous shimmer that the scanner doesn't really pick up)
Akiko - available
Silhouette Profile - available

*can only attach 5 photos at a time so will put the others in a second post

Here's my other 3 cards from today:

Well, life intruded and I've been mostly an absentee host for this. I'm so sorry about that... Big THANKS to mariloupatch for being such an amazing co-host.

The art and techniques shared have been nothing less than stellar. Thank you all so very much for your participation. And all I can say is -- just keep on painting!

You're welcome KES. It was fun, and I am so sorry I was not there yesterday. Too much pain, it is a big wound and need a while to heal. In the meantime it will be difficult to eat. But on the bright side....good for the figure (?)
Anyway ladies, still some cards waiting for trading! The trading can go on....
