Swap Due Date - June 15th, 2008
Signup/withdraw date - June 1
Number of Cards - 9/9
Number of participants - Max 9
Minimum Itrader -10+

I love history, but don't usually like vintage cards because they are usually done in sepia tones or black and white. This is a swap that shows history how it was lived--in color! In this swap you will make colorful historical pages, of any time period before 1900. Please use as little brown, sepia, grey, etc. as possible. This is a mixed media swap, so please use at least 3 media on each page. This can include watercolor, acrylic, ink, rubber stamps, collage, brads, charms, fabric, metal, glitter, hand drawing etc.

Creating pages:
* All pages should be 4"x4" and well constructed, preferably of matboard or illustration board, but no lighter than 140 lb. watercolor paper or two sheets of cardstock glued together.
* Please include username, real name, origin (country) and anything else you want to say about yourself on the backs of the pages. Make the backs of the pages interesting and not just plain white, but you don't need to make it as decorative as the front.
*Chunky books are called "chunky" because they have fibers or beads, embellishments or whatever hanging off the sides and/or the pages have different textures and chunkiness to them.
*This is a MIXED MEDIA swap, so every page must have at least 3 media, as listed above.
* All cards must be different and distinct. Originals only - no scanned copies or prints.
*Leave 1/2 inch on the left side free of embellishments for binding. You will bind your own pages.
*You will be sending in 9 pages, so you should make 10 if you want to keep one yourself.

Shipping:

All participants must pay their own shipping in this swap. In similar swaps in the past the shipping was:
--USA: $2.50
--Canada: $2.50
--Europe: $4
--Australia and New Zealand: $5

You can do any of the following to cover your shipping:
-US participants can send well-concealed cash, US stamps, or money via paypal.
-International participants can also send well concealed U.S. cash, or paypal.
-Note:*If you are using paypal, please add $0.50 cents extra for the paypal charges.

*Please include username and swap name on all envelopes sent in.
* All pages should be sent in baggies, wrapped in wax paper , or something similar to protect them.
* Please PM for my address when you are ready to send your cards.

Fine Print - All pages are due in my hands by the due date. Late pages will be returned. Please be aware if your pages do not meet the guidelines they will be returned. This includes duplicates and poorly constructed/sloppy pages. I will update the thread when I receive your pages. Please allow 48 hours for trader ratings. I would really like people to commit to doing the swap and not withdraw, but if you must please send me a PM. I will send one reminder PM (two weeks out for international, one week for local). Late arrivals or no withdraw communication/no cards will receive neutral feedback.

REMEMBER: This swap is all about history as a colorful and tactile place! Include lots of color and texture in your work.

Thank you for participating in the swap! I look forward to seeing everyone’s artwork!

Yeah! More people joined! I was afraid that this swap would be too scary and people wouldn't join.

Welcome to Jonquil and Knesi07!

OY, I am so glad you reminded me of all the words to that song! All I remembered was the first line.

ElectaBlue

Yeah! More people, and all artists that I admire. Welcome Amyfaerie and Rocketwoman.

Come on, OY! You can make it and give it to your mom. Isn't she the historian in the family?

ElectaBlue

I just realized that of the 7 participants so far, 3 of them are named Lisa! Are there any more Lisas who would like to join to even out our numbers?

Of course, we I would love to have non-Lisas join as well!

04-23-2008, 12:52 PM
Bodecia, you are SO in! (Even thought it didn't sound like you were so sure....)

I think this swap will be lots of fun once I get going on my pages!

Only 2 spots left!

Katxena
04-23-2008, 03:41 PM
Ouch! I love history, but working in colors other than brown is sooooo hard for me. I don't think I can participate, but I'll definitely be enjoying all the eye candy from this swap.

ElectaBlue
04-23-2008, 03:56 PM
Katxena! I wish you would join! I am sure you could do it. Just color everything instead of using brown!

Katxena
04-23-2008, 04:22 PM
Thanks for the encouragement Electa, but I think I'm going to pass this time. I'm trying to carve out some time for sewing, and colors are *so* hard for me. I found the cards for OY's vivid color swap to be almost physically painful to make. I'm so lame!

ElectaBlue
04-23-2008, 04:58 PM
I am sad you aren't joining, but I understand the need to work on something else. Let me know if you change your mind.

I can't believe that OY's pages were so painful to you. A lot of your work has color!

Katxena
04-23-2008, 05:24 PM
I can't believe that OY's pages were so painful to you. A lot of your work has color!

It does, but it's usually muted, darker colors. It's those brights that make me break out in hives. :)

ElectaBlue
04-23-2008, 05:30 PM
That is funny because I really don't like brown, or tan or anything that resembles them. I usually use the brightest colors I can and don't like to mute anything. I still found OY's swap difficult because I really like to use 2 contrasting colors to make things pop.

jonquil

Well I am working on my first page - the Battle of Agincourt - will post a pic when it's done

Bodecia's pages make me want to join this swap! I LOVE her Amelia Earhart one!

stormarela

do you have room for little old me? I would like to join, and am thinking about the colourful Royal Canadian Mounties for a page.

amyfaerie
04-27-2008, 08:09 AM
yay, stormarela! :D i'm glad you're in!

btw, i still have no clue what i'm gonna do for this swap. lol!

bodecia--great pages so far! "chunky enough" is a personal thing. some people trail ribbons, fibers, beads, etc. off an edge or two, but chunky can also be that the page itself is dimensional. i've made them both ways, based on what i felt the pages was asking for.

:D

ElectaBlue
04-27-2008, 11:00 AM
I am just popping on here for a minute. I have a booth for my jewelry at an arts festival all weekend and haven't had a chance to get on the computer since Friday at all and we need to leave soon to go start another day (in the rain!). I will reply at more length tomorrow.

Stormarela, thanks for joining us!

Bodecia, I will have to go and check out your pages tomorrow, I can't wait to see them.

Amy, I don't know what I am doing yet, either!

ElectaBlue
04-29-2008, 05:41 PM
I wanted to remind everyone that the pages are supposed to be any time before 1900, not after. If you have already made your pages, you can go ahead and send them in and they will be exchanged for other pages after 1900. If you have any doubts about what time period your page will fit in, please feel free to send me a message or post on here to ask.

I am sorry if I didn't make the date clear enough. I now realize that it was sort of buried in a bunch of other text, so I highlighted it to make it more clear. If anyone has any questions, please feel free to ask.

ElectaBlue
04-30-2008, 03:40 PM
I saw some of your cards you posted from some other historical swap (was it the Elizabethan one?) and thought they were wonderful. I am sure you will come up with something great. Actually, I think this is working outside of the box for everyone, including me.

Lise Bu
04-30-2008, 03:53 PM

ElectaBlue
04-30-2008, 04:12 PM
That's me! Off the wall! I was wondering why so many Lisas joined. I thought maybe it is because Lisas like history, but then maybe it is because we are all a little nuts. I know I am.;)

Lise Bu
05-01-2008, 02:11 PM
Lisa comes from Elizabeth - which is a very big name in history - so maybe it is something to do with that. Or maybe it is just like you say EB - we are all nuts!!!!!

Lise Bu
05-04-2008, 02:41 PM
Hi peeps

This is my 1st chunky page - William Shakespeare - for this swap:

5108

AND this:

5109

Is the state of my crafting room after I had done it - no wonder my husband despairs at me sometimes.

I hope you like the page - i'm off to tidy my mess up so I can start my next one x

ElectaBlue
05-04-2008, 03:07 PM
Lisebu, I LOVE it!

You clean up your room between card??? I would never get anything done if I did that.

Bodecia Arietty
05-04-2008, 04:50 PM
Lise Bu, that photo made me laugh so hard! I made some of my pages earlier this week. My parents were out of town so I did it on the kitchen table! It was such a splendid mess I was almost proud of it. It took me over an hour and a half to put every thing away!

Lise Bu
05-05-2008, 05:49 AM
EB - I have to tidy my room up between cards otherwise I haven't any room to work lol. I have even started to spill out onto the landing. All my rubber stamps and inks were there yesterday. My cats had a great time playing in the ribbon that I had left at the top of the stairs.

Bodecia - I'm glad i made you chuckle - mess is good, but then you have to put it away which is not good.

PS - did anyone see the empty Stella bottle in the middle of all the mess on my desk? I drank it whilst doing my Shakespeare page lol x

I'm now working on Guy Fawkes and the Gun Powder plot - will post a pic when it's done - if I can find my camera under the mess lol x x

ElectaBlue
05-05-2008, 11:17 AM
Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder plot sounds fantastic! It is fun to have you aboard since you are from the UK and might come up with some different things than the people from the states might. I am a bit of an anglophile and love to read historical fiction set in the British Isles, so having some British history is great!

What is Stella? I am afraid I can't see it in the picture.

I need to get busy on my pages now that I have gotten some of the other, more urgent swaps done.

Oh, and I usually work on several pages simultaneously (usually 4), so it takes me a long time, but I will have a bunch done at once. For example, I will go through and get all my materials out, then do backgrounds for a bunch at once, then add the collage or drawing and then just keeping adding until they are done. They all end up very different, even though I did them at the same time. I know that for others they like to do just one at a time.

Lise Bu
05-05-2008, 01:36 PM
LOL EB - Stella is beer!!

I thought I would share my topics for my pages with you.

1. Stone Henge (3000 BC) - definately pre 1900
2. London Underground (1863)
3. Signing of the Magna Carta (1215)
4. Guy Fawkes and The Gunpowder Plot (1605)
5. Elizabeth I (1533-1603)
6. Great Fire of London (1666)
7. Florence Nightingale (1820)
8. War of the Roses (1455)
9. Shakespeare (1564)

and then I am going to do one for myself on Chatsworth House (1687)

ElectaBlue
05-05-2008, 02:13 PM
Wow! I am so impressed with your planning and the topics you chose. I still have very little idea of what I am going to do, other than the one Henry VIII page I already made. I originally was making it for OY's monochromatic swap, but then decided it would work better here.

I don't know how I am ever going to choose which pages to keep in this swap.

I don't drink alcohol, so I am not that up on my beers, but if it was well known around here I would probably have heard about it. Or not.

Lise Bu
05-05-2008, 02:31 PM
We have so much history in UK that it has been difficult to get it down to 10 pages - I have a fab English History book that I just love so I chose my favourite topics from that. Plus Chatsworth House is only a couple of miles down the road from me - good excuse to get my camera out and pay it a visit. Plus being an EMT I get free tickets to go inside - there are some perks to the job lol x

ElectaBlue
05-05-2008, 02:41 PM
Wow! I am so jealous. I have been to the UK only once, and then I never got out of London. I would love to be able to visit and do a tour of the whole country.

Lise Bu
05-05-2008, 02:43 PM
You'll have to talk to all us British Belles nicely hun and do a few days at everyones house. I'm sure you could manage a month then and see most of the country x x

ElectaBlue
05-05-2008, 03:02 PM

How are other people coming on their pages? I know one person has hers done already! Personally, I have been gathering my all my historical bits and pieces so I can get started.

Lise Bu
05-09-2008, 12:13 PM
EB i'm glad you liked Londons Burning. This is 'Lady of the Lamp' - Florence Nightingale.

hey all . . . i've posted six of my pages in my gallery, and i have three to finish up! the remaining pages are the invention of the fountain pen and the golden age of the china doll, and christopher sholes, the inventor of the typewriter. :cute:

http://www.atcsforall.com/forum/gallery/file.php?n=13328&w=l

here's rontgen [or roentgen], who invented the X-Ray. i printed the photos on transparencies in color, then also used alcohol inks on the transparencies.

ElectaBlue
05-09-2008, 11:59 PM
Wow! You both have such great pages. I am not sure which of yours I like the best Amy. They are all so great and so colorful! The Rontgen one is just really amazing with the transparencies and alcohol inks.

I need to get busy on these, myself. I am having a hard time getting started. What about everyone else?

ElectaBlue
05-11-2008, 12:01 AM
Amy, I can't wait to see them all in person!

I am so excited about this swap and seeing all the cards myself and getting to choose my favorite to keep. I suspect I am going to have a very hard time choosing. I am not sure how I am going to divide them up, either, because they are going to be so different. I can maybe try to give people pages from specific time periods or something like that according to what they might like, but I am not sure how that will work.

I have been working on mine a little bit more and I have decided that some of them are going not going to be a specific historical event or a person, but just someone who could have lived at a certain point in history. Trying to do specific events was giving me fits.

Lise Bu
05-11-2008, 07:01 AM
EB hunni - if it makes things better for you when it comes to swapping out the cards I don't mind what I get as long as they are nice and colourful. But it would be nice to get something that isn't British history. (but i'm sure I will love whatever I get). I am working on my cover for my book as well as my pages. I will put up a pic when I have done it. I am hoping to get the rest of my pages done in the next couple of days - as they have to go over the pond, and I don't want them to be late. x x x

Lisebu, those pages are great, as well!

I actually finished one more of mine and did some work on a few more. I will try to post them in the next few days. One is a Mona Lisa page and the other two are queens.

Also, thank you for letting me know what types of pages you would like. I suspect that it won't be a problem finding pages that aren't British history. Hopefully all the pages that people send in will be bright and colorful.

My pages are all in various stages of completion, this one is the most finished, although something is not working for me on it... anyway, I have picked "The March West" 1874-1875 to share. This was the formation of the NWMP (North West Mounted Police - who became the Royal Canadian Mounted Police - the Mounites)... They were formed and sent out west to save what later became the rest of Canada from the American Whiskey Traders. They were sent to find "Fort Whoop-Up!" (I am not making this up.. ) As they marched west, they set up Forts which became cities, such as Fort Calgary and Fort Edmonton. If you are interested, there is more info here (http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/history/origins3_e.htm) ...
now, back to the drawingboard....

wow loving all the chunkies so far! I'm back from the sleepover and got my craft area cleaned up so after work today I get to play - have sooooo many ideas - here's a few I'm thinking of doing.

1. Lewis and Clark (had a great great great something uncle that traveled with them)
2. John Coulter (the great great great something uncle) both are around 1804 - coulters hell - when he was caught by the Indians but was able to get a way into Yellowstone - he first thought he had died and ended up in hell due to the hot water springs and mud pots.
3. Ab Lincoln - 1861
4. unground railroad - 1830
5. Benjamin Franklin - 1700's
6. Susan B. Anthony - 1870's

I also just ran across Edmonia Lewis - she sounds most interesting - she was a artist
she was big in the 1870's - born in the us but lived in Rome - had much to overcome.

Also want to do something with the American Indians - so much of that history is beyond sad, so not sure how to go about it.

and will try to get in a women from the Wild West - such hard times those people went thru.

That is a start - now to figure out how to add some color to ol Ab <g>

I received Stormarela's pages today and they are very colorful. I really like how you did the part with the writing on it. Is that metal tape?

GG, your ideas all sound wonderful and a great addition to the swap.

The swap is actually due in less than 2 weeks now, so I need to finish up my last few pages. I think I have 6 so far.

I received Stormarela's pages today and they are very colorful. I really like how you did the part with the writing on it. Is that metal tape?

Yes! Metal tape from home depot. I used a ballpoint pen to 'deboss' it. Then, I peeled the backing off, stuck it on cardstock, and then cut it with scissors into the shapes you see. I also wiped the whole thing with black ink, not sure it stuck though.

Metal tape rocks! I'm having fun with it.

Wow! It is so exciting to see people posting all their pages!

Yours are great GG! You chose a lot of great moments from the American west.

Jonquil, I was able to look at your pages more closely and just have to say, "Wow!'

I think it is funny that we have at least 2 Elizabeth and 3 Mona Lisa pages.

Storm, the black did stay on the metal tape, at least so far.

nice gg...i have that same cleo image. very interesting facts about the unmanned balloon flight.
are any of you putting little tidbits of info on your backs? i thought i would.
i've got 4 in progress. i bought some fluid acrylics (which i never used before) and i love them! i got some of the interference colors too...all i can say is yay!

goatgoddess
06-05-2008, 10:03 AM
Yeah I was thinking I would on the back - for some of the more unknown items for sure. Also thinking about overstamping mine on the front for a bit more interest - will have to think on it.

fluid acrylics and interference colors - sounds interesting - I haven't used those either. interference colors sound very cool - might have to go order some :)

I love, love, love both fluid acrylics and interference colors. I use the fluid acrylics interchangeably with my acrylic inks, liquid watercolors and heavy bodied acrylics. I didn't bring any of them to our art retreat this weekend and really missed them.

GG, those are great pages! I think overstamping them a little on the fronts would make them even better.

As for info on the backs, some people seem to be doing that and others didn't on the ones I received so far. Stormarela has a little info on the fronts, Lise Bu put it on the backs of at least some, but I can't remember what Amyfaerie did. I don't have them in front of me. Mine are more just basically about history and not specific events, so I don't really have anything to put on the backs.

ElectaBlue - do you mail order yours or did find them in dfw area?

I'll try to get my other 3 done tonight so I can mail them out this Sat. on my way to a allllllll day goat show, have to be there at 5 am :err:

They have them at Hobby Lobby and I think Michael's and Joanne's. Mostly what mine are is what I have managed to find in the clearance area really cheap, so I have odd colors. The ones I like are the Dr. PH Martens that are pretty expensive. I also got some at Dick Blick when I went there in person last summer, but they were a different brand. The interference colors I got were heavy bodied acrylics mostly, as well as some speedball inks. I don't think they are really different than the lumiere's.

By the way, I got some lumiere's on clearance at Joanne's when Adriayna and I went there on Tuesday. I even got some of the Jaquard fabric paints for 97 cents and the liquetex for 50 cents! They all were originally over 5.00 each.

I can't wait to see your cards in person. I think I still have 4 more to make.

OMG - that is a wonderful price! I never find those great clearance deals on paints. hope they aren't doing away with Lumiere paints - love them. :)
I will be stopping by the parks JoAnns tonight!

ElectaBlue

The lumiere were still 2.97 for one of those big jars, so not as cheap as the others, but I just LOVE lumieres. It looks like it was just a couple of colors. I want to do more fabric,so I wanted to get more fabric paint. The woman at Joanne's told me that they had clearanced out lots of art supplies over the weekend. I wish I had gotten more of the liquetex. It was cheaper than marked. Oh, they also had some paper at 10 cents a sheet, such as patterned vellum and transparency sheets.

Dana was very impressed with my bargain shopping.

We have Micahel's here, but not Joanne's, so there doesn't seem to be the same kind of competition and CLEARANCE pricing. I am jealous!

I hope everyone is hard at work on their pages! They are due this coming weekend. I obviously didn't look closely enough at the calendar when I was posting a date or I would have made them due on a weekday.

Everyone needs to be mailing these in the next few days if they are going to make it. I am going to send everyone I haven't heard from a PM later today so no one forgets.

Ha! I looked at Knesi's pages quickly and didn't even notice the wives. That is a great touch!

GG, I forgot to add thank you for the extra AND I wanted to say that I think Benjamin Franklin is my favorite of all your pages. I also really like how you put that little historical blurb on the back, so these are not just eye candy, but educational as well!

Rocketwoman, thank you for letting me know you sent them. I was beginning to get worried about you. Important women in American history sounds just like my kind of thing!

There are 3 sets that are on their way, so hopefully they will be here today. I am going to swap them out ASAP.

sorry, i have been running behind on everything. Seems like my life has gotten a little out of control lately. seems like things go crazy and just when you think you can't take any more they ease off. so, i'm waiting for the ease off part now. i've dropped most all my swaps, but really wanted to do this one. anyway, thanks for the thought. hope they are there very quickly. i'm excited about my returns.

Rocketwoman, I know how it can be. Sometimes it just seems like everything happens at once.

I received a great big bunch of fun and colorful pages today from Haley, Knesi, and Bodecia Arriety. We are just waiting on Rocketwoman's pages and then I will switch them out.

Rocketwoman's pages are here! I love how you painted the backgrounds. They are so very colorful.

I am going to try to swap these out and mail them in the morning, but I may not be able to do it until Saturday. The post office near my work is only open 10-1 in the summer and the lines are usually really long. In addition, I can only run over there when I can get away from work and can't stand in line long.

I KNOW! Don't stress out about it--I'm sure that waiting until the weekend to swap them out is easier, so don't worry about us!

I am so excited about this swap. (wish I was this excited about History when I was still in school....)
I do promise to wait patiently, however, and not harrass the maillady.

ElectaBlue
06-18-2008, 11:10 PM
I am glad people are so excited! I wasn't happy with some of my pages, so I went ahead and did some new ones over the last few days. I know! No fair that I can do them after the deadline! Anyway, if anyone would like to look I uploaded some more of my pages to my gallery.

Now all I need to do is figure out how in the world to swap these out. I think what I am going to do first is swap similar cards. For example, if you sent an Egyptian page, you will receive an Egyptian page. I think 4 of those were sent in.

I think people are going to be very happy because these pages are all so different. It was interesting seeing all the different interpretations of this idea.

ElectaBlue
06-21-2008, 06:53 PM
Ok, I FINALLY got these pages in the mail today, so they are on their way to everyone now. I thought having every person get one page from everyone else in the group would be easier to swap out, but it was much harder. Several people have pages that are similar enough in style that I kept getting confused. I think that one person might have ended up with the extra page from Goatgoddess! Anyone who gets that just got lucky! Let me know if anyone is missing a page from anyone else or there is any other problem.

It was a fun swap and I want to thank you all for participating. I think everyone should be very happy with their returns.
