04-21-2008, 11:16 PM
Swap Due Date - July 30, 2008
Signup/withdraw date - July 10, 2008
Number of Cards - 3 for 3
Number of participants - US unlimited, 10 international

This swap is now closed - thank you!

Make three cards in the style of a mosaic. This means you will draw, print, or cut up paper to create smaller pieces (or tiles) that you will glue on to a card blank to create a picture. The mosaic 'tiles' must be made from paper - but you can draw whatever you like on that paper before it's cut up or you may use already printed images, gift wrap, tissue paper, etc.

Please no thick embellishments - no embellishments other than the paper pieces used to create your mosaic. The actual picture may be abstract or representational, your choice.

US Senders: please send legal/business size envelope SASE with $.60 or so cents of postage
Intl Senders: please send return address label, postage is on me.
Extras appreciated but not required!

Make sure your username is on the back - you may want to include your real name, swap name and location as well. Please send all cards in plastic sleeves or baggies to protect them.

Any questions, please pm me!

Welcome y'all:) Hey, if you can operate scissors and a glue stick, you are good to go for this swap!! I'll try to post a few pics of some cards I recently made that inspired this swap. I've just been too lazy to scan em!

04-23-2008, 04:45 AM

04-23-2008, 08:04 PM
May I join? I've been doing a ton of paper mosaics lately, on journals, wood shapes, even trash cans! ATCs should be really fun and challenging due to their size.

04-24-2008, 12:14 AM
Oh boy! Finally a swap to use the thousands of pieces of paper I have already got cut up because I have been making mosaics for a long time. Sign me up please.

04-25-2008, 04:07 PM

Euphoria, your cards are the first in and they rock!

05-09-2008, 06:04 AM
I'm so glad you like them! I was a little concerned 'cause I didn't do the "whole" card in mosaic. They were fun to make! I can't wait to see everyone's cards; they're sure to be gorgeous.

05-09-2008, 05:29 PM
Lilbad your lovely cards arrived today!

05-27-2008, 06:25 PM
My cards are going postal Thursday. Grace, please keep one for yourself.

PaulineT, your mosaics are just gorgeous!!! Very nicely done! Thanks for posting for us to 'oooo' and 'aaaaahhhhhh' over!! - Rooskie

05-30-2008, 12:02 AM
Pretty please may I play too? I am new to the wonderful world of ATCs. This looks like such fun, and the cards posted so far are all fabulous!

05-31-2008, 05:17 PM
Can I join ? I have tons of paper bits because I hate to throw anything away. Usually I make "serendipity squares" to use on note cards, but mosaics sound like tons more fun.

05-31-2008, 08:50 PM
Hi! I am ready for your address. I am finished - this was challenging for me. I uploaded them to my gallery if you want to peak - 4 cards - one for the hostess!

06-05-2008, 02:43 PM
can I please join?

06-08-2008, 05:22 AM
Could I please join this one too? (I'm in Australia).

06-08-2008, 09:00 PM
Welcome everyone!

06-19-2008, 07:26 PM
I'd like to try this technique. May I join?

Would it be alright to use embossing powder to make the "grout" between tiles?

Thanks for the great idea.

06-27-2008, 06:00 PM
My cards are done, but I have to show them to my mother first! She always wants to see the cards before they leave for parts unknown. Here they are for online viewing! Boy, did they take a long time!

07-02-2008, 11:19 PM
Me, me pls, I'll be International no. 9?

07-03-2008, 12:58 PM
Hi! I would like to take a spot to play! Can I join in the fun?

07-04-2008, 08:38 AM
Wow, great cards KaHeD! Welcome baronessnz and busyb!

07-07-2008, 01:39 AM

I am almost done with my cards so I thought I would ask for your address so I could mail them as soon as I am finished.

07-07-2008, 04:11 PM
Sign me up! Finally figured out what I wanted to do for this one.

07-07-2008, 11:07 PM
My cards ready for shipping. Address pls andthank you

07-08-2008, 04:57 PM
OrigamiGrace, I sent a PM but wanted to post here as well. I need to withdraw from this swap :-(

The cards look fantastic so far and I am sad I have to withdraw.

07-08-2008, 09:35 PM
still working on mine. I thought I had missed the date for this swap!!

07-09-2008, 03:55 PM
Does anyone have Origamigrace's address, can you pm me, I'm starting to worry, I really want my cards to make it on time. Can't trust the mail from New Zealand all the way to.... I don't even know where they're going

Origamigrace... Where areyou? :wideeyed:

07-09-2008, 04:35 PM
I sent baronessnz the address that she needs.

07-09-2008, 10:51 PM
Awesome, cards on their way

07-13-2008, 08:32 PM
Thanks all, sorry for the delay - my summer camp is really keeping me busy since I'm down one senior counselor. But my campers love doing atcs so that's been fun!
I think I have everyone who's in and out at this point and am moving this to the Active Forum and just waiting on cards!

07-15-2008, 06:03 AM
Sorry everyone, I'll have to drop out of this swap I'm a bit overwhelmed at work at the moment.

07-17-2008, 01:11 AM
I sent my cards out yesterday. Tried to scan mine, but my computer wouldn't same the images! Mine are along the patritotic theme.......for the holidays.

07-21-2008, 08:27 PM
Here are my mosaics - this was fun to do! Putting them in the mail and hoping they will make their way quickly.

I'm new to this and was curious what adhesives/methods other people used? I used tweezers and toothpicks to get the bits into place, glued each piece, and then added modge-podge. There's probably a better way...?!

07-22-2008, 07:50 AM
Wonderful cards! Can't wait to see em in person!

07-22-2008, 05:57 PM
I'm really sorry, but I'm not going to be able to get my cards in on time. I've only got 2 made and for some reason I thought you were in the UK so I had plenty of time. Now there's not enough time to get them to you.

07-23-2008, 09:08 PM
Don't worry, if you've got cards ready to send, I'll wait! Mail takes only (surprisingly) 4-6 days from across the pond - I live right by Dulles Int'l Airport so I get domestic mail in 1-2 days and int'l mail in 4-6!

Ibus, if you can eke out one more cards, pls send! LMK!

07-23-2008, 10:05 PM
Great. I'll do the other card later and get them off to you asap.

07-24-2008, 07:31 AM
Apologies from me too, I'm not going to make it on time. I've nearly finished the last one, but have been working longer and not getting home until late and haven't had a chance to get them all done. I'll send them off to you on Saturday anyway, and if by some miracle they make it on time (which I don't think they will), that's great, otherwise, you can just keep them for your collection! Sorry I wasn't quicker!!

07-24-2008, 08:40 AM
OrigamiGrace - I don't mind if we have to wait an extra day or two for card returns. I know the swap rules are pretty strict, but we have a couple of players here who are SO close to done!

07-24-2008, 08:57 AM
I also don't mind waiting also if we need to! I would like for everyone to be able to participate if possible!

07-24-2008, 05:37 PM
Thanks :) Can some one PM me the address so I can get them in the post tomorrow please.

07-24-2008, 07:42 PM
I PM'ed the address to Ibus.

I also don't mind at all if cards come later - I'd rather everyone get to play!

07-24-2008, 08:36 PM
Thanks Puddleduck for the address and for being so understanding of my mistake. :notworthy:

07-25-2008, 12:19 PM
Oops! I forgot to post that my cards went out on Monday, 7-21. They should be there any day.

07-25-2008, 02:40 PM
I put my cards in the mail today. I really had fun with this one and many more ideas are churning through my brain.

07-25-2008, 03:58 PM
Mine went in the mail today too. I don't have a photo, but I turned this ATC into a mosaic.
10314 10315 10316

07-25-2008, 10:11 PM
I forgot to attach the images of my cards - so here they are.

07-26-2008, 12:47 PM
:wub:Mine go postal today, just under the wire.

07-27-2008, 08:14 AM
Wow, some lovely cards. Not to worry, I usually hold a swap for several days to one week (mostly cause I need a few days to make sure I got everyone's itrader ratings in). I usually set a due date for mid week and give myself to the following weekend to make sure I've rec'd from everyone who wants to be in! And, I'm lazy:)

07-27-2008, 12:02 PM
Good job, OG! Can't wait to see what I end up with!!

07-27-2008, 11:26 PM
Grace - just following-up... I PM'd you last week about not being able to finish because of the difficulty I'm having with my arthritic fingers, but I'm not sure you got it. I did send off the one mosaic I managed to make for your collection. ~Jackie

07-29-2008, 11:44 AM
Got them finished last weekend, so they shipped out on the first postal truck Monday. Hope they arrive in time.

I had a terrible time with this project. I had what I thought was a "GREAT idea!" but it didn't work out so well. (I don't do much collage work, so am not sure which things work how.)

Maybe one of you can suggest what went wrong?

I printed the back info onto a sheet of stiff cardstock (as I do for my digital ATCs) and use photo-mount to adhere a sheet of avery label-paper to it. (That part worked fine.) Then I cut up things into ATC-siz pieces. Meanwhile, I had printed out a lovely mountain image onto stiff matte paper and cut each image into mosaic bits that would fit an ATC. Some were cut into tiny pieces, others into larger pieces. (All still fine.)

I then removed the label 'backing' to expose the sticky-ness and placed the mosaic pieces onto each ATC. (That was a PAIN, but seemed to work okay -- other than being a little crooked because my fingers were bigger than the pieces and it was hard to set them on straight.) That far, I was sort of pleased with the results. Then the problems started.

I poured on embossing powder, tapped off the excess, and used a heat gun to melt it. BUT... instead of getting the completely opaque hard surface that I was expecting to use as mosaic grout', I got a shrunken crackly-looking surface that let the white show thru. Not liking that, on one of them I tried painting on some thinned gesso (which is all I had with me at the time!) to put on some more powder and re-heat to try and thicken up the 'grout' lines. It got a little better, but not much. Still had white showing thru. Plus re-heating seemed to loosed the 'tiles' and I had to re-stick them with gesso. I stopped there, didn't try to change the other two. Just sent them out crackly. **sigh**

The confusion for me is that the last time I used labels to do embossing (with a different color powder), it came out fully covered and very thick. Is there some problem with different kinds of embossing powder? This time I used "Stamp-n-stuff Embossing Powder -- 'Honey' Opaque" while the other time it was "JoAnn CraftEssentials Embossing Powder -- 'Gold' ".

Any suggestions? Thanks.

ps... I'll let the host decide if these are good enough to trade. (I also made a second set that is less complex but better made -- my own flower photo printed onto labels, cut, and stuck onto black matteboard.) Feel free to trade or reject any or all of these.

07-29-2008, 07:07 PM
Lois, I'm not sure why the embossing powder didn't cover completely; I'm sure that was frustrating! What I always do is paint my background the color of the embossing powder ahead of time. That way if some of the powder doesn't stick, at least it won't be too obvious. I know that doesn't help now that it's already done...

07-29-2008, 08:54 PM
Wow, a bunch of cards arrived today and I must say that this has been one of the most creative, artistic and inspiring swaps I have had the pleasure of hosting - really great cards, all so unique and beautiful!

I am truly impressed with each and every card I've seen!!
Thank you all for playing - keep em coming, these cards are worth waiting on!!

08-04-2008, 08:00 AM
Just waiting on a few more sets of cards then will swap em out this week!

08-06-2008, 07:11 AM
All cards have been swapped and returns will be posted today! Please post when you receive and please try to leave rep points for your fellow swappers. This was a fun swap to host and all of the cards were incredible! Thank you!!

08-06-2008, 07:34 AM
Oh, wow, I'm so excited - everyone did such creative work for this swap!

08-07-2008, 11:31 PM
Can't wait to see some mosaics in the mail! Thanks for hosting Grace!

08-10-2008, 08:25 AM
Apologies, I swapped em but like a dope, I put em in a grocery bag in my car to take to the PO and I just looked and they're still sitting there --- I completely forgot to post em....sigh, another senior moment.

SO all the returns will get posted tomorrow - have a big sticky note on my steering wheel this time, lol! Sorry for the delay!!

08-10-2008, 10:22 AM
Thank you for letting us know about the delay - better to know than wonder if they were lost in the mail!:spinny:

08-11-2008, 03:17 PM

I have done that many times!

08-12-2008, 09:56 PM
LOL, I made a special effort to get to the PO and mail em today so all the returns have flown the coop!

08-13-2008, 06:26 AM
Oh, boy, my mailbox has been so lonely!

08-14-2008, 02:49 PM
Received a couple of good cards through swap. Just a bit disappointed. One problem I seem to be having in swaps lately, including this one, is receiving cards without plastic sleeves. If the Swap Host calls for all cards to be in plastic sleeves, why am I receiving ATCs without their sleeves?

08-14-2008, 04:40 PM
Received wonderful mosaics from Rooskie, LadyLanda, and lori.rn! I'm off to do rep points and iTrader!

08-14-2008, 04:50 PM
My apologies for "ranting" just a bit...I do not want to hurt anyone's feelings, ever. Please accept my apology. Everyone did their best.

08-14-2008, 09:01 PM
Got my returns, thanks.

08-14-2008, 09:41 PM
Smokeysmom, that's weird, I try to make sure all the cards either go out in sleeves or in 3 pocket strips - did you get a completely naked card??

I'm done hosting here for a bit. Thanks all for participating.

08-14-2008, 10:26 PM
Diana Nelson - pls pm me your full address. Your envelope came back today since the address was incomplete and you didn't put your username on the envelope so I don't know who you are!!

08-15-2008, 07:45 AM
Sorry to hear you are taking a break from hosting - this was a lovely swap, OrigamiGrace!

08-15-2008, 09:10 PM
Received wonderful mosaic cards today from Busymom, Joni Owens, and neca. Thanks for some lovely art. OG, u doodle bug u, thanks for hosting the swap and for lovely returns.

08-15-2008, 09:40 PM
Oh happy day, my cards arrived! Thank you OrigamiGrace for hosting. I had a great time making my cards. Thanks to Smullis for my dragonfly card, Paulinet for my balloon card and OrigamiGrace for my Chevron card.

08-16-2008, 08:32 AM
Wonderful cards arrived yesterday! Thanks so much to Lois (beautiful mountain scene), PuddleDuck (adorable birdhouse) and Rooskie (LOVE the love!). Very nice work, all of you!

08-16-2008, 10:24 AM
I'm sorry you won't be hosting again, cos this was a great swop. Now I've got my returns, I wish I'd thought outside the box as to what a mosaic is!! Would've made my last card a lot different and easier! :twitcy:
Thanks especially to our host for doing the swop and on my part for encouraging me to carry on when I thought I'd never make the deadline.
Thanks to Rockstargirl, lori.rn and Lois Richter for the lovely cards.
