I have a couple of sets here that I am waiting on to do, including xstiches beautiful peacock. I am going to a craft store next week and I want to look for some specific things. This craft store is over an hour away so I don't get there very often. The JoAnn Fabrics near me stopped caring alot of their paper crafting supplies. What they do have has been the same stuff they have had for years. I am anxiously waiting for the new Fall packs to come out. Not that I need more paper but when one is addicted.....

Lots of fun cards being posted!

The kids all go back to school tomorrow so I will have more time to stitch.

Thanks for the interest in a 3 person fabric card. I am going to try and find some patterns to start one, also some I can put on cardstock for everyone else.

Will go back on the thread and get the names of everyone who expressed an interest.

kentuckydakota
08-14-2014, 01:31 PM

Oh fantastic kentuckydakota - I have been waiting for those lobsters !

kentuckydakota
08-14-2014, 03:55 PM
Well normally I save up the sets I get and do them when I have a lull in swaps, so some are with me longer than others. But in this case, I knew what I wanted to do right away on them and then my computer crashed and I had to get a whole new computer with a new operating system which wouldn't communicate with my printer, which I needed to accomplish my dream for those ones- lol. Anyway, thanks for being patient.:)

I am afraid I have been sitting on a couple of sets for a few weeks - hope to get to them this weekend.

katelnorth
08-15-2014, 10:15 AM
Finished the only set I've been sitting on today, and made a load of new starters - mostly going out to those who have mentioned wanting them recently...

These were started by MACE, then worked on by Sarnie and finished by me. MACE, I'll send yours back to you with a new set of starters, and because I'm in the UK too, I'll send Sarnie's finished card straight to her (also with starters!) - for once, I get the chance to save someone postage - doesn't happen often...

katelnorth
08-15-2014, 10:38 AM
Also, who was it who said they'd like a Found Poetry RR? I think vampiress rose did, but was there someone else too? (as I have recently sent some starters to rose, if there was someone else, I might send to that person this time)...

Hi all..........
I have a confession to make.........I am CHRONICALLY behind on getting some sets that I have waiting on my table out the door. If your set is one of those, then I apologize PROFUSELY!!!!!!!!!!!! I am going to work on at least one or 2 of those today and scan and see if I can get them in the mail either tomorrow or Monday. Suffice it to say that you will have probably forgotten what you sent to me, it has been THAT long.....:embarrassed:

prayer_at_night
08-15-2014, 02:28 PM
Don't worry, girls! The beauty of the RR Group is that you don't have due dates, and that you sometimes get cards you forgot about. :biglaugh:
For me that's part of the game! :)

Geepers, you guys....THANX EVERSO!!! You are definatly PEACHES in my book for sure! With all the trouble that I have gotten myself into being late with things, I just sort of automatically assume it is another trip to the principal's office for me!!! AAAAAAND, here's the good news, 2 WHOLE sets ready to mail out, and I am working on 2 more sets to be ready to go at the same time. I will do me scannin' duty so everyone can see my additions!!! YYYAAAAAAAAAAYYYY!!! :jiggy:

There are definitely no due dates.

It’s nice if we can get them out in a timely manner but there are no round robin police that will come get you.

And it’s a good thing, too, because if there were I would be in big trouble. Sometimes I have them for weeks and weeks before I get them finished and on to the next person.

katelnorth
08-16-2014, 02:52 AM
I try to be timely, but it's not always possible to be quite as quick as I'd like - and also, like some folks, I like to work in batches, so I often wait until I have two or three sets to work on...

I have read the updates. I mailed off homers, and added starters to a bunch of swappers today.

Mainly people with M and T names, People who lived in Mass, that is all my brain can remember.

I did mail lobsters to someone. You can see what I did to them here.

The sunflower paper was a scrap from my friend Betty. Betty and I get together at her house and do paper stuff. I say paper stuff, cause she doesnt do atc card. She does these weird things called Greeting cards. Stuff for birthdays or thinking of you. Geeeze not even sure what to do with odd stuff like that. But she does waste her time making stuff like that. (wink wink)

Katel what is a found poetry rr? Sounds interesting

Well, my idea was that instead of one person just making a card with found poetry on it (e.g. the ones attached below), you'd just add one or two lines, then the next person could add one or two and the last person finish it...

mrubyjean
08-26-2014, 06:50 AM

Mom and I got some lovely letters!

One was from kentuckydakota: Teresa, we both love how you finished the under water set, and the starters are awesome too! LOVE the HP ones, of course. ;)

And the other was from CastleQueen5: Heather, the sunflower sets are wonderful and we both love them! We love the idea as well - let's see what becomes of them.

And I also finished a set: This is katelnorth, kentuckydakota and me.
It was impossible to get a nice picture, but you can guess how pretty they are in person. :)

08-27-2014, 12:05 AM
So I have a question for your ladies, can RR's consist of more than 3 cards? Just wondering.

ART ON!

kentuckydakota
08-27-2014, 02:40 AM
I've never seen it with more than 3, but I've worked on buddy cards where it's 2 cards and 2 artists. I think if you tried to do 4 cards with 4 artists it might be hard to fit it all in there.

Sarnie
08-27-2014, 06:04 AM
I loved those cards CQ5 !

Having felt that no CRRR envelopes had come my way for ages - 4 arrived this morning !
So I have had a lovely time admiring them and deciding what I need to do next ... I hope to work on some today but thank you Tandy and Kentukydakota for sending completed homers.

Nancy
08-27-2014, 11:54 AM
Sarnie, I will make you a starter set of backgrounds with the typewriter very much like those. It will take a few days. My teenage granddaughters flew back to Texas, after being here 2 weeks and I did not get to do any art..(We did the tourist things and walked the malls) I had 9 sets waiting for me to finish so I spent yesterday in the art room and completed 8...and this morning the postwoman knocked on my door and handed me 9
envies from AFA containing 19 ATCS including 3 RR starter sets, so I am going to have another fun day playing...AFA keeps me sane (well. almost) since the death oh my husband.

BekaH

I think either way could work - I didn't make it very image heavy, so there's space for whoever works on it to add both text and another element if they want to. Because this is a random swap, rather than something themed, I thought it was best to leave it as free and open as possible!

While I don't often comment here, I'm still actively participating in making ATCs and am glad to see lots of new players.

I have a protocol question - I also do round robins (we call them JAMS) with some others who are not members of this forum - some without internet access. That group has kind of dwindled and I'm looking for more folks to play with. Are there some here that are willing to receive round robins outside the AFA group? Don't mean to step on any toes and if I'm violating some rule here, please accept my apologies to the group. Of course, if you want to PM me, I would be glad to add you to my send list.

Thanks,

Hollie (StoneFX)

CastleQueen5
09-03-2014, 11:12 PM
StoneFx, we were once called Jams. I like the word Jams. Round robins remind me of a quilting round robin. But I remember when and why we had to change it. The only other place I trade ATCs anymore is swap-bot. They have jams there too but I dont jam there.

I am also excited to see I am getting mail soon from AJ!

and I can now see that you can not read the words. FUDGE!

THis is Katelnorth, Maggie and then I the last player, Mailing these off soon.

I am keeping the bottom one. If maggie or Kate have a preference let me know. I dont plan to mail both back to Kate, because then she has to pay alot to mail it back to maggie. I will pm them both.

I am not sure if Maggie added the angel or if they came as part of the starter card. Sometimes that is listed on the back of the card, but not this time.

BTW the text is from THE AMERICAN by HENRY JAMES. This damaged book has been awesome for found poetry. I have never actually read the book.

I totally ruined a starter set that was sent to me! I added an image. it looked terrible. so
I added some paint, what a mess, I tried to cover that with cloth and it was a disaster. I added some words, big mistake...my first impulse was to throw it in the trash but my conscious would not let me trash someones art. So with regret and an apology I mailed it to a #2....and am sitting here waiting to hear that I am banned from AFA...
Has this happened to anyone else??? ....It really bothers me but maybe this is the reason that we have so many missing cards in this group!! What should I have done!

No danger of anyone in this group banning you, Nancy!

I imagine we have all messed something up a time or 2. My hot iron once messed up the 1st card I added something to so I kept it and glued the other 2.

As vampiress_rose says.............

...........Some of the greatest art came from wonderful mistakes! :-)..............

I say .............What one person does not like another might love so just keep it going and hope for the best.

Honestly I am not worried about mess ups. I would prefer if it happens to one of mine to know about it and get it fixed somehow instead of being trashed.

Mine would be pretty easy to deal with I think because all anyone would need to do was to cut out my cross stitched thing and put it on another back if they are the 2nd person.

Either that or send it back to me and I could do it.

If they are the 3rd person it might be a bit harder but I am sure we can figure out something.

CynthiaSillitoe

When I've had a mistake as a second player, it's usually one card that's not great and I've included a "sorry, send this card back to me" post it on it, so number 3 can work on the others. A full set, I think I'd send back to the starter with an apologetic note. I have noticed, though, that if I let "ruined" cards sit a couple of days, I usually find a way to fix them.

MACE
09-04-2014, 09:36 PM

MACE

That actually happened in the hand drawn thread. I'm sure the same stands here. No one is going to kick you out of AFA for that. Anyways, art is art as long as you put forth your best effort.

Nancy, You are one of my favorite persons to work on cards with. I would not worry. Think about this, it is only small pieces of paper. We wont cry over small pieces of paper.

And probably someday when I die no one will even understand why i collected these small pieces of paper that I call art. But they make me smile, and creating makes me sane.
Some day an archeologist will be talking about these small pieces of paper we saved. We will be part of history!

Actually I have just added an embellishment I don't like to a set I was sent to finish - I have spent ages finding a really strong adhesive because the supply I used to get from trips to Europe has run out - so having used my really good strong adhesive I can't get the mistake off without ruining the cards !!!
I am about to photograph all the cards I have finished over the last week so you can all guess which set I mean - if the other two players have a solvent that will work please remove the offending embellishments - I don't think anything else was needed anyway !
Oh the angst !!!
... on the bright side I love this CRRR - it is such fun seeing how the cards turn out !

A few things in the post recently - from sarah (prayer at night) a homer (with birdcage) which I really like (2nd player was KD) and a set to finish which sarnie started (with vintage ladies). From heymaggie, a finished card worked on by me and tandy. From Mr Uby (he he) a set started by heymaggie, with dictionary pages as the background and a fashion twist. Hoping to work on lots of cards tomorrow as I still have a few sets to work on from before, as well as some swaps I want to keep on top of.

I do have a few things to pass on, which will go in the post sometime this week - the crows from KD which I have added to, which need to go to a third player; a finished set with a door going back to Vicky (2nd player tandy); and a set I started, where Hana was the 2nd player, which she accidentally sent back to me when sending something else. I think that's all the admin, lol!

This is a homer Started by Linda, and sent to Alornjr, then to me. They are all very similar so I have a photo of 2 of them. I added the flower punched from a book page, and both peach centers to both flowers, the words, and the inked edges.

I concluded based on the way vampiress wrote her name on the back that she intended the one card to be horitzonal

Hey group btw, I dont collect Halloween atcs, I really dont like holiday cards for my collection. That includes Easter bunnies or baskets, and Christmas trees or Santa or elves. They just take up room in my collection.

I do like Pumpkins, fall leaves, cats that are black, Crosses, pine trees, snowmen AND the GRINCH. OH and chocolate. I would love to get a BAT card that wasnt Halloween.

If I get a holiday card, I do work on it, cause ..... why do i? I dont know, cause I like making cards, and the holidays dont offend me.

I am pretty sure the whole "I dont collect holiday stuff" comes from being frugal. Ok so you are growing up and why would you have a Christmas sweater? or even a VEST? you cant wear it year round. So I didnt have, buy or wear, holiday themed clothes cause it seemed to be useless.

I do realize it is not useless, and it is fun, but it is stuck in my head: no holiday sweat shirts or socks. NO Holiday atcs.

Ok I like Turkey and Thanksgiving cards shhhh dont tell anyone.

DeepDarkHana
09-12-2014, 04:56 AM
Same here~ but I also don't mind working in holiday cards now and again .u.
and who says you can't wear holiday socks year round?? I'll give these sock and sweater police a stern talking to! lol
But maybe I'm weird...if I like something artistically, the theme doesn't matter...I've had a glittery reindeer ornament hanging on my art wall for two straight years XD

I love Christmas but I already have two folders of Christmas ATCs ... and it has to be said they do get very repetitive - I recognise most of the stamps and most of the vintage images !
I have bought a set of Graphic 45 rubber stamps to make Christmas cards this year - the 12 days of Christmas (One stamp for each day) plus matching papers - because I have exhausted all the Anna Griffin stamps etc.
So be warned if anyone sends me Christmas starters I will get the new stamps out !

LOL I might take you up on that ... and send your starters my way. I have exactly 2 Christmas ATC's and that was from a zentangle swap years ago. I wasn't in this group during the holiday to swap any....Open season ...send! I have no thanksgiving either. Halloween, not a big fan but I'll work on them. Of course being a veteran myself, for all you USA folks I'd love to work on a Veterans Day set.

I was so desperate, had not one single set to work on (as you might already know) :( ,
so I sat down and tried to create a starter set although I thought I wouldn't be able...
And guess what: I made 8 ( eight!!!) sets and I love them.
I used fabrics and felt and curtains and stuff like that- everything but colours. Now I'm hot. I don't think I can stop making starters. So: be on the outlook, girls!;)

Hurrah !

I am so mean with bits and bobs when I am making ATCs - I keep off cuts from collage, scraps of paper and any embellishments that come my way - so I am always ready to make starter sets !
This habit of keeping everything could also be called hoarding - the number of boxes containing this stuff is growing !

I was the same way when I started. Now I love making starter sets. So freeing-you can do anything. And then to see how they turn out, always different than you expected- very cool!

I have one set of cards ready to finish and send home and patterns picked out and thread pulled for 3 cards I have to work on. I need to figure out a way to get along with out sleep or at least a lot less than I think I need now.

Also went to Michaels today with my daughter looking for furniture for a fairy garden and instead I found a pattern book of 150 itty bitty motifs which of course I had to buy. Now I am excited to get some more cards with the hope some of my new pattern things will work.

My mom always had the same idea about holiday clothes. If you can only wear them at only a certain time why waist the money. My girls have told me NO more holiday clothes. I used to work in a store that aloud us to wear holiday shirts for two weeks before Christmas so I had several and because I do not work there anymore I have given most away. I still can wear holiday clothes where I work now but I think for me the thrill is gone. But for holiday socks. My mom bought 20 pair dirt cheap one year after Christmas. I wear them all year round because who cares, my pants cover them anyway.

Holiday ATCs, any time of the year just pass them on to me. That means any holiday. I know I have two three ring binders of jams but I have never counted the number of holiday ones I have. I might just do that.

Xstitcher I have a set here that is crying your name! Must send it along and let you play with your itty-bitty designs on it.

I also love working on holiday themes. I've often thought it would be a treat to work on a holiday that isn't celebrated here in the US. If any of you UK, Germany or Canada peeps want to start one like that, I'm your girl ;)

Well, I love to get graphic tees for Christmas and Halloween. I have some really cute ones. I do need to get another Halloween shirt for this year, though... The one I had last year has turned into a sleep shirt. I love Halloween though.. I love holidays, but Halloween is my favorite. And I'm really not a winter person, but I do like Christmas WHEN it is TIME for Christmas. My mother starts listening to Christmas music as soon as Thanksgiving is over. I can't, I still can't get into the Christmas mood... But when it's about a week or two before Christmas, it hits. And I like to dress up :)

I've never been much of a dresser-upper, but the little kids in their pageants, oh my, how adorable! One year my youngest was a tiny sheep with cotton balls glued all over his outfit- so cuddly! And another year we had 3 tiny angels each holding a letter spelling out the word JOY. Well the J angel sat down, laid down her sign and started taking off her shoes. So there stood two little angels with signs and we all sang "OY to the World". :D

I dont wear Christmas jumpers, socks or shirts but I do have a large collection of Christmas brooches (I think you call them pins in the US) - snowflakes, Christmas trees, partridges in pear trees etc which I wear around Christmas for parties !
Come to think of it many of them are American from 'Kirks Folly' although most are from an English Designer called 'Butler and Wilson' !

I was following all this holiday talk and saw Teresa's post about working on a holiday card from a holiday we have here that you don't have in the US - can't really think of any, as most of our holidays are the same (or they are US ones that we don't have here). I guess Boxing Day, but that's really an extension of Christmas (and anyway, all you do that's special on that day is sit around eating Christmas leftovers and watching bad telly). The other times we have Bank Holidays when the US doesn't, they are just bank holidays - no particularly significance. If you extend it to Scotland, I guess there's Hogmanay, but really that's part of New Year's. Perhaps Burns Night, if you are going Scottish? Any ideas, Sarnie? Oh wait, I know, Guy Fawkes Night maybe? Hmmm...will have to have more of a think on this on!

kentuckydakota
09-15-2014, 02:59 AM
I thought Boxing Day was the day to box up what you got for Christmas that wasn't a hit and pass it off to your service workers- waitresses, postal employees etc. So just leftovers and bad telly eh? That just ruined the romance for me.

All the rest you mentioned sound interesting and magical- please don't tell me they're all about shopping sales and overeating.

I thought of Guy Fawkes/Bonfire Night too Kate.

This has been celebrated in England since 1605 when Guy Fawkes tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament and failed !
On November 5 each year we traditionally build bonfires and have firework parties - this is the bad bit - an effigy of Guy Fawkes is then burnt on the bonfire. The figure is called the guy !
When I was a child in the country in Worcestershire children made a guy several weeks before bonfire night and wheeled him round the streets shouting 'A penny for the guy' - all monies collected helped us buy fireworks. I have not seen children doing this in London for years.
There was special bonfire night food - jacket potatoes, sausages and special cookies - parkin (a sort of gingerbread) and flapjacks.
In recent years the Authorities (the local Councils) have frowned on people having individual bonfires and setting off fireworks willy-nilly and now hold large Community bonfires and firework displays - although people continue to have firework parties at home minus the bonfires !
Bonfire Night is a nightmare for pet owners - most dogs and cats are scared to death by the bangs. Luckily as both of my neighbours have fireworks my present dog takes absolutely no notice and sleeps through it all.
We do not have a day off for Guy Fawkes Night !

Boxing Day was traditionally the day people/servants received gifts from their employers their 'Christmas Box' - not now although it is still a public holiday !!!
But now apart from eating up all the Christmas food and watching 'The Great Escape' on TV, Boxing Day has become a great sports day. Big Soccer matches etc and in the bad old days before it was banned the 'Hunt' met to hunt the poor old foxes. I think the "Hunt' in their red coats still meet on Boxing Day and charge around the country side jumping fences and not chasing foxes we hope !

We also have 'May Day' - used to be maypole dancing and a girl crowned 'Queen of the May', this still continues in some country areas. However, May Day now is mostly celebrated by Trade Unions having marches and other political demonstrations.
But we always have the nearest Monday to May 1 as a public holiday.

When I was a child Halloween was not celebrated in the UK at all - but since we started getting American TV the idea of 'Trick or Treating' caught on and it has become a really special time of year. I now have to buy large bags of sweeties (candy) to hand out to the neighbouring children - I tried giving them healthy fruit one year but this was universally unpopular so I now go with the flow and give them chocolate bats and candy made to look like eyeballs !

Really our most special holiday after Christmas is Easter - We give our children chocolate Easter Eggs (even when they are grown up in my case) and have Good Friday and Easter Monday as public holidays. We have a special Easter Cake called Simnel Cake which dates from Medieval times - It is a very rich fruit cake layered with marzipan, traditionally servants were allowed to bake this to take home to their families. There are lots of special Easter events like Easter Bonnet contests etc.

Well you did ask .....

Thank you, Sarnie. I always enjoy learning things like that! Very interesting.
I felt totally lost reading the last two or three pages because I really didn't know what the hell you're talking about. But NOW I understand. So here is another lesson- a very sad one...:(
In Germany we don't have holidays like you all:no:
We have Christmas, of course ( 25./26.12), we have Easter (sunday and monday) in april, we have Whitsun (sunday and monday) in may or june and every october 3rd we celebrate the re-union of Germany. The only day in the year that you could mention in this context is Ascension day, which was meant to be a religious festival. But obviously german men thought that they needed to celebrate themselves. So for a long time it is called Father's Day. That means that men flock together in the morning, pack lots of alcohol into a handcart, wear embarrassing clothes and so they take long walks laughing and drinking and singing and drinking and joking and drinking....:goofy:
When there is no alcohol left the are dirty and totally drunk. They return home and are sick for two days. A wonderful tradition... AND: It is NOT for women!!!( who would want that?):swoon:
And that's it in Germany- buhaaaaaaaaaa

What you don't mention Sarah's Mom is how magical your Christmas festivities are - My daughter and I travelled across the English Channel, through France, Belgium and the Netherlands on a coach to Germany to visit your City to enjoy the Christmas Market !!!
(We did have overnight stops in hotels on the way)

The Christmas markets in Germany are wonderful - nothing plastic or mass produced but stalls selling gingerbread hearts decorated with frosting, ornaments made of glass or wood beautifully carved and all sorts of hand crafted traditional toys.
All offered in lovely little covered stalls brightly decorated and lit.
We also drank a lot of mulled wine and eat a lot of hot sausages while walking round the market !

Oh my sister had kinder surprise eggs in Canada. They won't sell them in the US because of choking hazards, but I thought they were so cool!

Thank you for all the info on holidays y'all! Next best thing to traveling there is to hear about it all. My son took a German language class and heard a bit about Germany's traditional Christmas. I don't remember it all except something about an elf named Rupreicht and the children getting to go home from school at noon to take a nap, so the tree could magically(Mom and Dad) appear while they slept. I'm probably getting that all wrong, but I found it really interesting at the time.

When my kids were younger I thought they were so cute. Once my son, Bobby, went as bob the builder, such an easy costume, a hard hat, overall and some tools. The principal of the school was also BOB the builder so I got a great photo of him and the principal and scrapbooked it. Now he is 17 and not so cute. hahahhahhaahahahahha

When I was in college, I was a camp counselor during the summer. One of the staff was from Scottland, Cant even remember his name, but he was so impressed that I was born on NOV 5th. He said we have fire works and a big party on your birthday. Thank you Scottland, I guess I was named Heather for a reason. I never forgot the fireworks on my birthday, even though I dont remember his name.

I think being born on NOV5 is like being born on the 4th of July.
