View Full Version : CHUNKIES: Creative Life Chunky Book Swap Redux (Due June 23)

Creative Life Chunky Book Swap!

(This is a new swap on the same theme as one that just ended (http://www.atcsforall.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1949))

Swap Due Date - June 23, 2008
Signup/withdraw date - June 2, 2008
Returns mailed - June 30, 2008
Number of Pages - 4 for 4 OR 8 for 8
Number of participants - 50 maximum

This swap is now closed! Thank you for your interest!!

This is a 4 for 4 OR 8 for 8 swap for 4x4 inch (10 x10 cm) Chunky Book Pages. The theme is "Creative Life" -- think art, creativity, craftiness, inspiration, fun. You will make and send 4 pages or 8 pages, and you will receive an equal number in return.

There is no iTrader requirement for this swap -- anyone can join! If you've never done a chunky page swap before, this would be an excellent way to try them out without a huge commitment.

Artwork: All media are welcome. Each page should be decorated on the front and the back. Your major effort should be made on the front, and your artist information will go on the back (at a minimum: your UserID, the name of this swap, date -- but you can include other information too, as you like). Please decorate your backs too, but it's not necessary to make them as detailed or elaborate as the front -- just don't leave them plain!! No copies -- all pages must be original (but may be similar!).

Binding: Leave 1/2 an inch (1.3 cm) on the left side free of embellishments for binding. You will bind your own pages.

Base & Embellishments: Please use a sturdy base for your pages -- cardboard from food boxes, mat or mount board, or several layers of thick cardstock would be ideal. You want the page to stand up by itself without bending. Feel free to use any embellishments you choose -- fibers, chunky bits, beads, whatever! But please do not put any embellishments on the left edge, and use surface embellishments no more than 1/8 of an inch (.3 cm) thick.

Shipping: Please include a large label with your address on it. DO NOT INCLUDE A SASE. I really, really don't want it. I will provide appropriate envelopes for all returns (often by recycling the one you used to send to me!).

Return Postage: ALL participants must pay for their own return postage. You may pay by sending US stamps, well concealed US dollars, or by paypal. Postage amounts for returns are below, and reflect the US postage rate increase that will go into effect on May 12, 2008 (the amount on the left is for 4 pages, the amount on the right is for 8 pages):

US participants: $2.00/$3.00

Canadian participants: $3.00/$4.50

All other participants: $5.00/$6.50

Paypal: If you are using paypal, please send payments to Kristie@papaya-palace.com, and make sure to include your userID and this swap name in the note area. If you use paypal send an extra $0.75 to cover their fee.

Multiple swaps: If you are in more than one swap I am hosting at the same time, you can combine your shipments to me. When I receive them, I will be separating them, so please group the swaps in your envelope some how (putting them in separate ziplock baggies or separate envelopes inside one outer envelope works great!). Don't forget to send a mailing label and postage for each swap. If I am able to combine shipments of your returns, I will send back or refund your postage, but I can't promise I will be able to combine your returns.

A (P) after a person's name indicates their postage has been sent, by whatever method.

05-05-2008, 10:00 PM
Of course! Welcome amy! And you too j4mi3!

05-06-2008, 05:54 PM
This is my first ever chunky book page. I wasn't sure how much info you wanted about me in the my info part. That's the front page, right? The one with my info? I don't think it's supposed to be like a rolo...I'm confused. So I will show it to you here with what I think is the front first and the back second. It's 4x4 and I do have raised stuff on it with those sticky squares that are about 1/8 inch high.

I find myself being creative with my flower garden - so I figured 'Create a Garden' counted as creative life. Am I off base?

05-06-2008, 06:25 PM
TherapyArtist, you're a natural! I love it, it's so pretty, and you did a great job with this theme!!!

Usually, the front is the part that's just art, and the back is the part with your info on it -- just like an ATC. I think the info you put on it is fine -- your userID, the swap name and whatever else you want to put.

You did a great job, and I can't wait to see the other pages you make!!!

05-06-2008, 06:31 PM
Hey Mary, I'm sure that there are many more qualified individuals than I to give you feedback about your chunkies but I'm here online now so I'll answer (and I love your pages regardless of where the artist information is located!) Artist information usually goes on the back and it's the same information you would put on the back of an ATC. Insofar as the the theme, I think it's fine and frankly wouldn't mind one tiny bit if I got one of your pages in this swap. (hint, hint) :cute:

05-06-2008, 08:27 PM
Thank you so much. That helps a lot. Onto more!

You're going to see Pear Jam???? I would love, love, love to go. Love me some Eddie Vedder! His voice is fantastic. Doesn't match his round little face.

So, anyway, onward and upward. I like this group. When I finished my page I realized, hey I'm going to get some back! And that REALLY motivated me. I want a little book!

05-07-2008, 11:49 AM
Chunky books are awesome -- they are so much fun to play with! :)

05-07-2008, 08:26 PM
I'd love to play with you all!
This looks like fun, and all those 4x4 pieces of mat board sitting around my framing table can become beautiful :)

05-07-2008, 08:50 PM
Yippee! This is fun. I did two more. Are you guys like the guys on the rolo site? They like to see things when people finish?

05-07-2008, 09:57 PM
We love to see things! :) Please post pictures!

05-07-2008, 09:58 PM
Welcome MistieKay! And welcome to ATCsforAll.com!!! Please PM me with any questions you have.

05-09-2008, 01:39 PM
Please add me. I want to play. I'm kinda rusty but this was just the project to get me back into swaps.

05-09-2008, 05:16 PM
Welcome Lyndah! I'm glad you are joining us! :)

05-09-2008, 10:03 PM

05-10-2008, 07:45 AM

05-10-2008, 09:54 AM

05-11-2008, 04:40 PM
Welcome back Pennyquilter!

05-12-2008, 10:53 AM
I have a feeling I might be working on these pages at the last minute -- May is starting to look really busy for me. How's everyone else doing?

05-12-2008, 12:17 PM
may is super crazy for me...end of the school year. i have 125 portfolios to put together for my students. it is a culmination of the years work. i'll be working on mine in june.

05-12-2008, 12:19 PM
I've been working on mine at the same time as the garden ones, so most of them are ending up being creativity and garden themed at the same time, so I will have to decide which go where. I think I have 8 done for the two swaps.

05-12-2008, 05:20 PM
If four is the proper number....I'm done!
Here are my last three if you'd like to

5612 The back of this one is in my gallery. It's called Practice.

05-12-2008, 06:44 PM
btw - The practice one may look simple...but here's an interesting thing...the background is SATIN. ooooooooo. If you're dealing with ballet there's got to be some satin in there somewhere. The other side is satin and lace...oooooooo!:biglaugh:

05-12-2008, 06:56 PM
Wow! Satin and lace! :) Great pages TherapyArtist!

05-12-2008, 10:30 PM
Miss Mary....satin?????I love satin....

05-14-2008, 08:12 PM
well i did the frist one it was great so I love to do this one two please

05-14-2008, 10:43 PM
Welcome back Meow! :)

05-17-2008, 09:07 AM
may is super crazy for me...end of the school year. i have 125 portfolios to put together for my students. it is a culmination of the years work. i'll be working on mine in june.

Excuses, excuses! Quit slackin', Kathy! *snickering*

05-17-2008, 10:14 AM
ooooh you dissin' me????? watch out girlfriend...we're in too many groups together! ROFLOL you reallllllly scare me! hehehe

seriously though, i got 15 done...it is so boring, tedious work! (i keep breaking to work on chunky pages...i've become a chunkaholic) but the end result is worth it when you see all their work for the year together in one place. you see how they've progressed....especially the 4 yr olds.

05-20-2008, 07:27 AM
OK I'm going to dive right in here!
I know I am new, but this one sounds like one I would like to join!

05-20-2008, 08:30 AM
Welcome to ATCsforAll HelloWhitney! And welcome to this swap!! Please feel free to PM me if you have any questions about the site or about the swap.

05-21-2008, 08:08 PM
mine are coming . . . i'll be sending them tomorrow!

i have all four in my gallery . . .

05-21-2008, 09:45 PM
Amy, you're back?! Super chunky funky monkey pages AF!

05-21-2008, 10:52 PM
thanks, afms! [yeah, i'm back . . . woot!] this is just a great theme. :D

05-23-2008, 08:46 PM
I didn't copy any of my garden cards to my gallery, sorry. But I'll be mailing my creative life and garden chunkies in the same envie tomorrow. All of the cards have photos on them that I took at the Lilac Festival. They're not as fancy as some, but I took the pictures and, if I do say so, they sure turned out purty. So I let the pics stand out.

Keep an eye open, Kristie!

05-23-2008, 11:02 PM
I'll let you know when they arrive safely!

05-24-2008, 10:21 PM
I was not going to sign up for more right away....just sent in my last swap, BUT I can't resist LOL. I will just have to get stuff out and do rolos at the same time.
And of course there is the Lucy purse I just started and DH's chemo...AM I NUTS!!!

05-24-2008, 10:24 PM
OH I almost forgot, sign me up for 8...(in for a dime, in for a dollar!)

05-25-2008, 07:40 AM
Welcome KarenM! :)

05-26-2008, 03:06 PM
I'm finally getting mine done! I just posted them two of them in my gallery. Can't figure how to do it here...

05-26-2008, 04:08 PM

05-27-2008, 02:18 PM

Mine will go into the mail first thing tomorrow for both garden and this swap.

06-02-2008, 02:38 AM
Can I join please, Katxena? I'll be on time! Thanks :)

06-02-2008, 05:27 AM
Absolutely! Welcome to the party Batraplume!

06-02-2008, 02:36 PM
I love that username, Batraplume. Especially pronouncing it with a French flair, sounds so sophisticated.

Man, I so love that this is like a mini U.N. but only better because we discuss mainly happy things like art.;)

06-02-2008, 02:53 PM
The power of art (and gardens) bringing us all together! :)

What does Batraplume mean in French?

06-05-2008, 05:47 PM
Ah ah, good question!!
Actually it means both nothing and several things at a time (don't laugh!!)

I'm going to try to explain :

"Batra" is the first part of the french word "batracien" which means "batrachian" = a frog

"plume" means "feather"...

...so my name means "a frog with feathers" or "a feathered frog" (I don't know which one is better!).
"Batraplume" doesn't exist in French, I came up with this name several years ago because "batracienne plumes" = "a female batrachian with feathers" was a bit too long for an Internet username!! ;)

Art4mysanity, what does mean "U.N."? I don't understand, thanks :)

06-05-2008, 06:20 PM
Hey Batraplume (still love pronouncing that username)! U.N. is short for United Nations - there are so many people on this site from other countries. I love it that I get mail art from England, Ireland, Canada, Australia, etc. and now from France!

I checked out your sites and I love your artwork, especially your dottie dolls. :cute:

06-05-2008, 06:32 PM
I've been saying Batraplume myself.. it really does sound good! now that I know what it means, its even better!
I have may pages almost finished, should be sending them in tomorrow. I just spent 10 minutes trying to get all the gel medium off my fingers... so, when the cards dry, I can chunk them up, and send them off. This has been fun, and, umm, sticky!

06-06-2008, 12:42 AM
here are my not yet chunked pages:

06-06-2008, 12:47 AM
Ooooh, these are beautiful Susan. Is that friendly plastic you used to make the big letter "A's"?

06-06-2008, 12:56 AM
nope, the big letters A are ripped up pieces of thick handmade papers ( I didnt make the paper tho)... the whole thing is covered in several layers of gel medium... and so are my fingers!

I've never seen friendly plastic to buy around here, I think it must be alot of fun!

06-06-2008, 07:46 AM
nice pages storm!

06-06-2008, 08:12 AM
Lovely chunkies !!!!

06-06-2008, 09:22 AM
Gorgeous pages stormarela!

06-06-2008, 06:22 PM
Thank you everyone, I had alot of sticky fun making these ones. I added a charm and lots and lots of fibres, and have sent them off in the mail today. Katxena you should have them in about 10 days I think.

06-06-2008, 08:21 PM
I'll let you know when they get here!

06-07-2008, 05:19 PM

I mailed mine today (June 10). Hope they are on time.

06-10-2008, 01:11 PM
I mailed my 8 pages today too. Katxena, you should receive them next week. Fingers crossed! :)

06-10-2008, 03:15 PM
My 8 pages are MOSTLY done. They are made from:
acrylic and watercolors on paper, with hand cut collaged words and painted scrapbook letters, mixed bits of patterned ribbons, and machine stitching with rainbow variegated thread, as well as the piece de la resistance (Spelling error, I know), 8 little paint palettes I made with blobs of acrylic paint on them! Hopefully they'll be liked. I'll try to get them posted tomorrow.

06-10-2008, 04:49 PM
Cool -- I will look forward to seeing both Batraplume's and OY's cards!!

06-10-2008, 06:36 PM
I added spray paint to them, and now the mini palettes are dry so I just have to finish assembling and scan them.

06-10-2008, 09:59 PM
Here are my pages. I'll be sending in 8 of these 10. 1 page (TBD) is already "claimed" in a prearranged private trade with kneisi07 and the other one (the Butterfly page) I'm going to keep, b/c I used a greeting card for the butterflies and flowers and I don't feel like it's enough of my own work to give it away, so I'm just keeping it for my collection.

06-10-2008, 10:04 PM
Here are the remaining pages

06-10-2008, 10:06 PM
Oops... Forgot one. Sorry. My pages will be mailed out before Saturday. I'll post with the exact date.

06-22-2008, 09:09 PM
I forgot to scan the pages I sent to Katxena, so here is a pic of the one I kept. They are all similar to this one. The tags in the pocket come out and each has a quote about creativity.

06-22-2008, 09:14 PM
hey maggie-
love this idea...very clever

06-23-2008, 01:32 AM
Thanks! The palettes were fun to make, with their big ol blobs of paint on them.

When I get my returns from this swap, I'm going to make a video for Flickr of me flipping through my whole book....it's super fat!

06-23-2008, 05:42 PM
Hope my pages show up today!

06-25-2008, 07:40 PM
OriginalYouth's delinquent pages arrived today! Yay! I'm probably going to start working on the returns tomorrow. I'll have them in the mail by Monday at the latest.

06-26-2008, 10:24 AM
Yes, I'm delinquent, I'm SO sorry! That's a first for me, to be the last one.

06-26-2008, 11:17 AM
It was only because of the attack of the killer tomatoes, I'm sure OY.

06-26-2008, 10:43 PM
It was only because of the attack of the killer tomatoes, I'm sure OY.

It's true. They really slowed me down, and I didn't want to send 1/2 effort work or rush them. Hopefully those who get them will appreciate the layers. :) Thanks for the vote of confidence!

06-27-2008, 08:22 AM
Having seen them in person, there's no way anyone could not love them!

I haven't been able to swap these out yet, I'm so sorry for the delay. I'm working 12+ hours a day right now. I thought this was supposed to be my day job, not my all-the-time job. :(

I will swap everything out this weekend, I promise. It will hit the mail Monday.

06-30-2008, 05:12 PM
I dropped these returns off at the post office this morning! Let's hope for fast mail! This swap was as amazing as the first one. I just bought a crop-a-dile and am working on putting my books together (finally!). I'll post pictures when they are finished. I'm so lucky that I had the chance to see everyone's work. You all did an amazing job!!!!

A note on postage: The postage for this swap seems to have confused some people. Many people sent me too much money or too many stamps. If that was the case for you, and if you did not directly instruct me to keep it to use for other returns, I refunded it. Also, there were 12 people who were in both this swap and the In the Garden swap. I was able to combine the returns for 9 of the 12. If you were one of the lucky 9, I refunded some of your postage. So for one reason or another, many of you in the US will find $1-2 in your returns. I will be issuing paypal refunds for some international participants tonight.

For US participants, you will get a refund if you sent me too much or if I combined your returns with the other swap. For non-US participants, you will get a refund if the actual cost of mailing to your country (averaged across all participants from your country) was way off from what I estimated (this was particularly true for Australia, I really over-estimated. I'm really sorry about that.), or if you sent me too much money or if I combined your returns.

07-02-2008, 02:21 PM
I got my returns yesterday and I must say they were impressive! Jetleg I loved the fabric black and white one... and Knesi07 I loved your Art is not a thing it is a way, and OY, I got two pages from you the long live your creativity, and Art starts with dreams! They are all totally awesome! I'm hoping to make a cool wall hanging out of these and the ones I recieved from the last one... I can't wait to do more chunky swaps... If only I had more hours in the day!

07-02-2008, 02:42 PM
YIKES! ShesSoCrafty, I had no intention of sending you two pages from the same person, I'm sorry! That was a mistake. I'll PM you about it right now.

I'm really glad you like your returns! I've been on pins and needles all day waiting to hear from you! (ShesSoCrafty lives quite close to me and is always the first person to get her returns from me).

07-02-2008, 04:48 PM
I can't wait to do more chunky swaps... If only I had more hours in the day!

07-02-2008, 06:39 PM
Got mine today, too! My reps will be going out tomorrow. Wonderful CREATIVE work! Thanks, Kristie, for a great swap!

07-02-2008, 08:47 PM
I thought I'd share a couple of pictures of my "Creative Life" chunky book. I collected the pages through swaps on ATCsforAll (the two I organized, and several personal swps), and through smaller swaps on other sites.

I have a few other Creative Life pages that I haven't bound yet:

The group on the left is waiting to be made into a wall hanging. The group on the right are a small set of pages that have an "Art from the Heart" theme -- I'd like to collect a few more of those and make a separate book or wall hanging of them.

The ATCsforAll artists who contributed to this amazing collection are: Alteredmommy, Amyfaerie, Art4MySanity, Asena, Babbetto, Corrie04, Electablue, Goatgoddess, Grrdjules, Jetleg, KatieV, Kim, Knesi, LillyLemon, Linda4atc, LindaP, Lisavollrath, Original Youth, Pennyquilter, ShesSoCrafty and me (yes, I made a page for myself).

If the list looks short, that's because there are duplicates (I trade with some of these artists on more than one site), there are pages from artists who aren't on ATCsforAll (why they aren't is beyond me) and because AFA artists make super, thick chunky pages!!!

Thanks to everyone who has traded art with me, or who has trusted me with your art in an organized swap. I love my book!!!

07-02-2008, 10:49 PM
wow that looks great all put together...i've learned one important thing....

07-03-2008, 11:01 AM
My Creative Life pages came today (July 3) just after my elec. went back on. Had a hard hail storm last evening. Tree leaves cover the yard, plus large limbs, etc. Water in the basement.
So anyhow, please let me know how much I enjoyed the mail today. Thank you Katxena.
My returns are from MistieKay, Jamie Gage, Corrie04, and Therapy Artist. Love them all.

07-03-2008, 12:23 PM
My pages came yesterday. What a great art day it was! Thanks Katxena, for hosting!

I will leave reps for each person individually. They were all such wonderful pages.

07-03-2008, 05:46 PM

07-03-2008, 06:42 PM
I received creative pages from Stormela, meow2000 (2 pages), pennyquilter, electrablue, j4mi3, Isabelle (don't know your user name), and mistie kay. Thank you everyone!

I think Isabelle is probably Batraplume, but I'm not sure.

07-03-2008, 06:44 PM
It looks like a couple of people are getting returns that include more than one page from the same artist. This is a mistake -- you should only get 1 page from any given artist. Please PM me if that happened to you and we can arrange a way to fix it.

This is the first time I've hosted a swap with a variable number of pages (4 or 8), and I guess it threw off my swap-out system more than I realized.

07-03-2008, 07:41 PM
Wooohooo!! I got mine today! They're great! Thanks to: art4mysanity, batraplume, electablue, heymaggie, j4mi3, jetleg, OY, and stormarela for awesome creative pages!! And thanks bunches to Katxena for hosting!! :jiggy:

07-04-2008, 12:44 AM

Thank you for hosting another Chunky Life swap....I love my returns. I received a wonderful painted piece, Art of Balance by Knesi07. A nifty painted, collage, sewn piece from OriginalYouth. Art Does Not Follow Rules with the lovely chunkiness of it all by Amyfaerie. Lastly, Be Bold Make a Statement, beautiful painted girl from ShesSoCrafty.

Thank you all so much, great job.

07-04-2008, 07:30 AM
I'm back home for less than an hour for lunch and I've just received my returns!!
Katxena, that was so fast!! Thank you so much for the choices you made!

I'll be back tonight and will tell you more, I don't have enough time to have a closer look at them right now (very frustrating!)

And yes, Isabelle it's me! Sorry I thought I had written my username on the backs of my pages!

07-04-2008, 07:38 AM
Whoa, Batraplume, that's super fast! There's people in the US who still haven't received their returns!

KatieV and Jetleg, I'm really glad everything arrived safely, and that you like them. Because so many people were in this swap for a second time, I felt like I had more information to use when picking returns for people. I hope that means I picked perfect pages for everyone. :)

07-04-2008, 03:29 PM
Katxena, you certainly picked perfect pages for me!!! My pages came yesterday and I love them so much. Great work hostessing a great swap. I received pages made by amyfaerie, stormarela, originalyouth, batraplume, j4mi3, detephoto, meow2000, and katiev. Thank you all very much.

07-05-2008, 12:15 AM
Perfect picks for me too! I put the pages from this swap and the last one together in a book - and they look fantastic together!! It's my first chunky book, and I love it  I keep flipping through it and fondling the dangly bits (that sounds kind of risque, hehehe :D)

07-05-2008, 06:17 AM
Hi everyone! I'm back to tell you a bit more...
The package I received from Katxena yesterday was wonderful! It contained 16 awesome pages as she included the returns of the Garden Chunkies too!
For a first try, it's like Xmas for me! :jiggy:

So I want to thank :
- Corrie04 for "Layers"
- Stormarela for "Create Art"
- Lyndah for her page "To live a creative life, we must lose our fear of being wrong"
- Meow2000 for her Beethoven page
- KatieV for "Develop"
- ElectaBlue for "All you need is art"

I'll leave you some rep. points, hope to meet you all on other swaps! (I think we will!)
Katxena, thanks again for this great job you made!! and thanks for hosting this swaps, you're a great hostess!! :wubclub:

That is absolutely beautiful. I want it!:D

07-09-2008, 05:32 PM
 Hehehe, make your own!! :P

07-09-2008, 05:34 PM
But I don't know how *boo-boo lip*

07-09-2008, 05:49 PM
Oh, it's easy! I used metal rings that I found at the office supply store. I just punched holes in all the pages and put in eyelets, then put in the rings.

I thought about adding more chunkyness to the rings -- like tying on some yarn or tags -- but m husband told me it would be too much.

07-09-2008, 05:51 PM
 I still don't get it...I guess I'll just have to take yours!:mask:

07-10-2008, 01:58 AM
it looks good, I think I'll take it too!
My pages arrived today, I'll leave points and thanks and all that good stuff tomorrow. ...... :swoon:

07-10-2008, 08:45 AM
KatieV, your book looks marvelous! I really like the cover you made!!!

 I still don't get it...I guess I'll just have to take yours!:mask:

It's easy TherapyArtist. Think about the way a 3-ring binder is put together. You can buy just the rings at an office supply store. They look like the picture on this page:

Then you line up your pages and punch holes in the left-hand edge. These pages are all thick enough that you have to punch each page one at a time -- don't try to punch through multiple pages at once. You want to punch them in the same place on each page so that it ends up all nicely aligned. You can use any kind of hole punch you want to make the holes, but I can testify that a crop-a-dile works very well.

Then you open up the rings and slip the pages on them, exactly the same way you would add loose-leaf paper to a 3-ring binder.

My book is made the same way KatieV's is -- we both used two rings, which means we punched two holes in the left edge of each page. My holes were about 1-inch from the top and 1-inch from the bottom of the pages -- Katie's look about the same. I've seen books made with 1, 2 or 3 rings -- there's no right way to do it.

07-11-2008, 01:18 AM
If you don't have the rings, you can just use ribbon too! Also, Wal-Mart has them for CHEAP here, about 1/3 the price that Staples charged me.

07-11-2008, 05:56 PM
OK> Now I can't even feign stupid. I'll 'get 'er done!' Thanks for all the great instructions. (Shucks. I really wanted to steal that one!!!) I will post when it's done, how's that. That's if this thread isn't closed before I get it done.

07-11-2008, 07:05 PM
Hehe, don't even try it! I've got protection!! :policeman:

07-11-2008, 08:59 PM
OK> Now I can't even feign stupid. I'll 'get 'er done!' Thanks for all the great instructions. (Shucks. I really wanted to steal that one!!!) I will post when it's done, how's that. That's if this thread isn't closed before I get it done.

Ooops! I didn't mean to pressure you! :) Although I would like to see your book when it's put together. ;)

07-14-2008, 05:53 PM
lmao. I will have to go to the hardware store tomorrow. Somebody PM me tomorrow and remind me that I am supposed to 'get 'er done' ok?:embarrassed:
