ART Diego is a GO!

Hello Again World Famous Artists

Although this is not an AFA sponsored gathering, thank you to Carole and ATCs4All for allowing us this platform to organize it! Thank you to all who contributed feedback for planning purposes via the San Diego 2016? Poll Thread. We took all the info into consideration, put it into a blender, and came up with this…

Who: Lucky Ducks
What: ART Diego
When: Thursday, February 25th – Monday, February 29th 2016
Where: America’s Finest City
Why: Warm Fuzzies with the HeartTribe
How: PM me for Registration Info

One place stood out above the rest for an arty party:
Homewood Suites (http://homewoodsuites3.hilton.com/en/hotels/california/homewood-suites-by-hilton-san-diego-airport-liberty-station-SANLSHW/index.html) by Hilton @ Liberty Station

There are a few spaces open – PM me for registration information. Keep in mind that San Diego is an expensive place to visit. Plan on $100/per person/per night with 3 people sharing a suite (each having their own bed). This is a discounted group rate until January 19, 2016 that includes tax - after that date the price goes back up, but you may be able to get a discount with AAA, AARP, Hilton Honors, etc. Breakfast is included with the price of the room and in the past has been a great feature to not have to go out looking for it before you get your ART on.

Reg Fee = $100. Hotel = $300/$400. Transportation + Grub + Whatnot = $$$???

WHAT ARE WE DOING during ART Diego? Pretty much anything goes. No one is required to “do” anything once you show up – it’s your weekend and for most, it took a lot to get here, so of course do what ever makes you smile. For some, hanging out at the hotel with friends and supplies will do that, for others the lure of San Diego will have you outdoors exploring. Some ideas for the weekend are:

GIFTING and TRADING ART Bring things to trade, or not. A list of trading possibilities is below to inspire you before you get here. Many have made gifts to hand out to all in past gatherings. A suggestion would be to bring trades or gifts to the reception Thursday night to get things going. We liked the idea of the art piggy bank, where those that contributed to the pot were eligible to win the lot in a drawing at the end of the weekend, so there will be an ART Diego piñata version going on. And of course, you can make and trade things while you’re here – many challenge themselves to make art from items found during the weekend. Or just hang out and laugh. It’s all good!

Things mentioned so far…
ATC’s/APCs ~ CHUNKIES [4x4’s] ~ HEARTS [for your Jar of Hearts] ~ GOTHIC ARCHES [4x6] ~ 2-SLEEVE DOLLS

Postcard/Gothic Arch Sleeves (http://www.bcwsupplies.com/cat/trading-card) ATC Sleeves (http://www.bcwsupplies.com/cat/trading-card/sleeves-toploaders/card-sleeves)Other Possibilities…
CHARMS ~ MOOS ~ Moo HOUSES ~ WONKY HOUSES ~ FUNKY FISH/maliciousfish ~ POSTCARDS ~ HANDS ~ ROLOS ~ TAGS

WHITE ELEPHANT EXCHANGE Will be a little different from past exchanges. If you’re going to play, it needs to be completed before you get here as the exchange will take place Friday morning. Helene will be running things and rapa has designed a sugar skull template and the end result needs to be something other than cardstock – go with wood, metal, clay, paper mache, etc. – so thick, chunky, 3D, mixed-media that will support some bling-bling will ROCK!

TRAVEL JOURNALS Because there’s lots to sketch around the grounds of the hotel and the surrounding areas of Liberty Station and Point Loma, the focus before you get here is learning or expanding your know-how about Travel Journals. Mistiko and lindagiese have talent and experience in this area and will try to pour all of their knowledge into tutorial threads on AFA where you can put their advice into action. The idea is to have everything you need ready to take with you everywhere you go in San Diego, from walks, bike rides, lunch, sightseeing – you’ll end up with some new or better skills and a great collection of moments and memories from your get-away weekend. <><><>Travel Journal Eye Candy<><><> (https://www.pinterest.com/anncthompson/travel-journals/?utm_campaign=bprecs&e_t=1110a241de4542c991a61b4ece02f904&utm_content=176555316580838881&utm_source=31&utm_term=1&utm_medium=2004)

LINOLEUM BLOCK PRINTS While you’re in the ART Room, there will be stations set up with tools and supplies to carve linoleum blocks and make prints from your carving. Tandy and jazzie will put their experiences in carving and printing into tutorial threads on AFA so you’ll have some familiarity with the process if you decide to try it. There will be demos to get you started and we’ll be nearby to help out – but you’ll be able to go at your own pace. Once your block is carved, you can make prints for trading with everyone else who’s joining in during the weekend.

ALTERED ITEMS There will be a few things to alter and raffle off at the end of the weekend.

GROUP PROJECT I hope everyone will want to join in on this! There will be blank jigsaw puzzles available for all in attendance. Do your thing to it over the weekend, turn it in before you leave, and you will be mailed a piece or two from everyone else’s puzzle who participated. When you assemble the puzzle at home, you will have a unique patchwork quilt of artwork from all your pals at ART Diego that you can frame and hang on your wall and get the warm fuzzies from every time you gaze upon it. The base of the puzzle is matte illustration board – so just about any medium will work - do whatever you want with Copics, paints, Microns, collage. I will have examples on site so you you’ll have a better idea of the end product will look like.
Puzzle People: jazzie#Helene#Chatty#Beth#AnitaM#rapa#nanner#jennt #lcartist#Tandy#Lind4atc#lindagiese

You will start with a blank puzzle (https://www.pinterest.com/pin/41658365280308433/)
...ours will probably be 8” x 10” because that’s an easy size to manage, mail, and frame...
...you make something like this at ART Diego because this is your color (https://www.pinterest.com/pin/328551735286769841/), style (https://www.pinterest.com/pin/236931630369570556/), or thing (https://www.pinterest.com/pin/252342385344934992/)...
...and after all are turned in, dismantled, then set free, you’ll end up with something like this (https://www.pinterest.com/pin/517773288382347384/), or maybe this (https://www.pinterest.com/pin/135600638755589716/), or maybe that! (http://punkaspieart.blogspot.com/2012/01/altered-puzzle.html)

MOST OF ALL You will have a blast whatever you choose to "DO" at ART Diego!

Kentucky dakota and I would like to go as well. Just wondering however... Last year we both signed up for a Artzona and paid our fees, but then got deathly sick and couldn't go, so lost all our money. Don't really want to do that again. And this is in the heart of flu season!

Great lindagiese! - Are people able to ask you questions about art journaling on your blog? If not, would it be possible to cut & paste your blog info onto an AFA tutorial? I was hoping to have a focused area for people to go to, rather than have to search through the ART Diego thread for answers to their questions.

Just looked at the examples of the puzzle and it looks so cool!
So Jazzie, when you say 8 X 10, how many puzzle pieces would that be?
Depending of how many people participate, the final puzzle might have more than 1 piece per artist, correct?
Do you need to know in advance who will do the puzzle so that you know how many puzzle blanks to get and what size etc..???
Just brain-storming......;)

jazzie
10-17-2015, 01:16 PM
Well the size I'm looking at is 8" x 10" and has 35 pieces which I think will work the best for a few reasons:
1) 8" x 10" is an easy/standard size to frame
2) the pieces are larger than 1" but smaller than 2" [5 across on the 8" side/7 down on the 10" side]
the larger puzzles have too many smaller pieces, the smaller puzzles have larger pieces but not enough of them, and
3) since we won't really know how many will show or will want to participate, more pieces per puzzle is fine, some may get two pieces from one artist in the end, but no more than that (unless only me, you, chatty, and beth dig this...!)

They sell the puzzles in packages - by the dozen, so as we get closer I'll probably order 3 packages to be on the safe side.

It was still NTC when I lived there. It was so sad watching them doing all the construction to make some changes and add all of the houses and Liberty Station.

Change is tough, but at least they preserved most of it from the wrecking ball and kept such a great open space for public use. There are still a few of the buildings being renovated. When you think of what other developers might have done with the project, none of it might have been spared.

The first time I stumbled on it (slammed on the brakes when I saw the Trader Joe's sign!), I got out and walked around and felt like I was at UCLA or Occidental College. When I got home and Googled it and read all about it's history it was clear why the place had a campus feel to it.

Speaking of wrecking balls - some unfortunate news...
The beautiful view across the boat channel is not so beautiful now. I think they are building a new hotel in what used to be a parking lot hidden by mature trees. They leveled every single tree to the ground and now there are cranes and a view to some NTC barracks that the police and fire depts use for urban training. It's not purdy right now - hopefully they'll work fast, and there are nice views elsewhere on the grounds. Nothing we can do about it, but the timing sucks!

Tandy
11-01-2015, 12:25 PM
I think the barracks used for urban training were actually part of RTC. To clarify, RTC stands for Recruit Training Center, which is where the men's boot camp used to be. I think that old training ship is still standing on RTC. NTC stands for Naval Training Center, which is where we go right after boot camp to receive our technical training. NTC and RTC where right next to each other and the Marine Corp boot camp was right behind NTC.

Linda4atc

I don't remember hearing about the RTC before, but it makes sense as they're separated by the boat channel. And the MCRD is a busy place - lots of cars in and out when I drive by........LOTS of people watching at the hotel and eateries in the complex - you will see many different uniforms all around and I've seen Navy and Marines doing their runs along The Esplanade.

So if you're looking for things to sketch at the hotel, there's all that and some paddleboarders/kayakers, and water fowl. Next door at the Marriott, where they have a ballroom, there may be a wedding or an auction, and in the park space next to the hotels there's always something going on - dog shows, kite flying contests, soccer practices, and more. Many things going on all the time so there's lots of subject matter around.

Chatty and I are still looking for a third roommate if there are any lurkers out there....?

Question for all you veterans of these events. Is this doable, or do you think it will too busy and I am asking too much?

I am thinking I would love to have an "Under the Sea" moley, pocket size with the one long foldout page. But not one where artist do a page or three. Kind of a HD/HP Round Robin project, People could add something significant in just one place or add fish/plants/shells here and there across several pages forming one big scene. You would color in what you add but not the water or sand. I would then complete it on my own.

What do you think? Of course I am open to special requests in return.

Linda, I think that would be neat and I would surely draw something for you. I know at the last ARTzona Linda Geise had a sketchbook she had people do a page in. Of course, Jazzie is the power that be so we'll have to see what she says. :)

Question for all you veterans of these events. Is this doable, or do you think it will too busy and I am asking too much?

What do you think? Of course I am open to special requests in return.

Linda it is a big request/project to ask 23 people to fill 30 pages in a weekend - we wouldn't have the space to dedicate to that (no spare tables for it) but you're certainly welcome to pass it around and have people work on it at their own workspace if they choose to - it would be like setting up one-on-one trades.

Linda if you bring your book you can count on me to do something in it.

..giggle..but Jazzie is correct..giggle..I learned that with my little book I use to make..giggle..I discovered that I really do not get much art done, I am so enjoying my fellow artist seeing them once a year is just not enough for me ..giggle.. I love them all. I try to bring as much completed pieces with me and I am open to mailing pieces that I need to honor a trade.

I haven't gotten very far this weekend - still clearing a space to work, there's more on either side of the pic.

Actually thinking about clearing a space, but thinking more about ordering Thai food and then clearing a space...

Now that the plague upon our house has left, I will be spending most of the four day weekend getting busy and work on some things to trade - I'm in a beads and baubles mood right now and hope I have all the supplies I need because I don't want to go out among the crazed.

Hope you all have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Oh and we have had a few donations of art supplies and this one threw me a little bit. It's some supplies to work with Fabric Creations Soft Fabric Inks (https://www.plaidonline.com/blog/post/2015/06/01/how-to-hand-stamp-a-design-using-fabric-creations) from Plaid.

My hesitation is that it talks about a 24-72 hour drying/curing time and for those of you traveling by air, it might not be totally dry by the time you leave. But if you want to try it, I was thinking old denim might work well, so start looking around at anything you might want to make purdy. They gave us ten different colors to play with. I'll read up more on the process.

Ooooh! That fabric ink looks so fun! I even have some wooden block printing blocks similar to what was shown that I bought at a quilt show.

If people want to try it out and have it shipped to them they can leave enough money for a flat rate box and I can take it to the PO.

Hey, I'm going to have to keep my eye on you two and your CART ENVY!

The green one is my jewelry cart and I love it because I can hang blingie baubles through the cut-outs. Got it at Tuesday Morning and it matches perfectly this set of painted pistachio wooden boxes I found at a thrift store a few years ago that fit in the trays. They have other interesting styles that are tempting. The turquoise one is for my paints and inks - got it at IKEA and they have other colors too. LOVE both of them in my tight quarters and they work great on the hardwood floor.

Last year at ARTzona I thought it would be cool if I had it right next to my chair to hold my stuff up off the floor. Poor Tandy! But do I dare?

I read up on the block printing fabric inks...

To prepare, you need to
1) wash any fabric/clothing you're bringing for this to remove the sizing on the fabric,
2) do NOT use fabric softener,
3) dry in a dryer to shrink,
4) iron to remove wrinkles,
5) iron a piece of freezer paper to the wrong side of the fabric to stabilize it
All of the above steps will result in a better finished product.

I can bring an iron and tabletop ironing board so people can do the ironing and the freezer paper part on site. If anyone does not have freezer paper on hand and doesn't want to buy it just for this, I live and die by it, so have lots and am willing to share what I have and influence you in the process! ;)

Thanks Cynthia!
I'll bet there are irons in the suites too and then they can iron to set the ink afterwards.

I know, I really hate driving in Southern Ca traffic. My son lives in the San Bernardo mountains, in fact he is a correctional officer and was working at facility close enough to hear the gun shots on December 2. I also have family in Burbank. I may stay with one of them. But most likely if I reach southern CA during rush hour I'll try to get a room this side of the grapevine. I will sleep and then plan to leave between midnight and 2 to avoid the am rush.

So Tandy what time are you driving in, will it be from San Bernardino area?

I am south east of San Bernardino. I haven't decided what time to drive down, but I can pretty much come down anytime. It takes me about 1.5 hours to get to Point Loma. When you know what time you think you'll be down there let me know and I can meet you there around the same time. I lived down there for 12 years so I'll have no problem finding us things to do. :)

I am now at a standstill...
I fused batik fabric patches together to cut out and embellish fabric hearts but may have to use this for funky fish instead as my scissors can't cut through the thickened fabric very easily. A trip to Jo-Ann's will both solve the problem and put me further behind schedule.

It also doesn't help that Inspector Clouseau is making me laugh, I'm simultaneously freezing and burning up as I try to balance my space heater and open window to mix the air to a comfortable temp, and I'm considering a break-up with coffee as it is repeatedly causing me grief.

OK I got out my Heart box today. Tandy you are the only one I have heart from in this group. It is a heart painted gold with a four leaf clover. I was doing heart trading back in 2013. I stopped when I made several that never traded. By then I was doing them in polymer clay. I ended up doing abandoned art with all of them except one I will probably bring to trade.
These are the ones I hove been working on the last three days.
http://www.atcsforall.com/forum/gallery/images/259/large/1__hearts_1-3-2015.jpg
All of these started as hearts cut from a thin sheet of currigated cardboard from a package. When layering I turned each piece so the ribs would run different directions and strengthen the hearts.
#1 bottom heart is covered with a book page, top heart has doodled flowers done with markers.
#2 two layers of cardboard colored with dark red copic, edged a little darker. Wrapped in wire.
#3 covered in combination of torn papers, then glazed with lightly tinted matte medium to give it a more vintage look. Added three eyelets and wire embellishment.
#4,5,6 three layers of cardboard each getting smaller (easier to cut smallest first)
Then I used light modeling paste to smooth out the ridges and "frost" (kind of like a cookie) the heart. Then I dripped copic ink on them to color them, and glazed with gloss medium when they had dried well. (two days) I may add something to these...
#7 three layers of cardboard hearts all the same size, carefully covered with white cardstock, top, bottom and sides are all zentangled.
#8 one of the first I did using the molding medium, didn't know what to do next so I glittered it, the next day I glazed it with glass medium to be sure the glitter does not shed.
#9 With this one I actually tinted the molding paste and "frosted" the cardboard. I then pushed some beads into it to look like candy sprinkles on a cookie.

Linda4atc
01-04-2016, 04:01 AM
I think I am going to add some red stickles to #8. Do you all think I need to add anything to the middle row hearts?

Oooo Lots of pretties, thanks jazzie. I don't do pintrist much but I think I sen myself a couple of those.

I am STILL working on hearts but I have commitments that I need to get busy on. So far I think all my hearts are mostly recycled materials. This last batch is thinner, and made with images and text found in a Via (AAA) magazine. Also all my hearts fit into a penny sleeve until I decided to use the Minions from an ad, I used textured wallpaper as the background and they closer to a 4x4 in size.

Would anyone be interested in making/trading ART Pennants? (http://www.atcsforall.com/forum/gallery/index.php?n=244807)

A few years ago amyfaerie had a 3:3 swap and this is what I made [will try to get pic of what I got] but I'm sure you get the idea.

They need to be made of sturdy chipboard so they won't curl - a cereal box will not do, think more towards the back of a notepad. I recently saw pre-fabbed bases somewhere and it got me thinking it might be something a few would want to trade and the cutting is already done for you.

There were two sizes - no template needed - we all know how to make triangles if you can't find pre-cut.
Small is 4" x 6"
Large is 6" x 9"

Any takers?

All of the above sounds great I am going to have to find a way to budget myself. We just had my husbands vehicle in the shop totaling $900 and I am almost due for 60thousand service. They quoted me another $700. :( And I want to do as little city driving as possible...

That said, I do have to eat and I want to go to the store that has encaustic art supplies. And I would love to sit a sketch with my friends.

Oh and I'd better get started making stuff - a sketchbook/art journal and things to trade.

I'm stopping for a few days in Santa Cruz on the way down and visiting a weaving studio where I'll spend some time making garments from handwoven fabric - so I also need to weave the fabric for that.

Yikes, I've got lots to do.

I'm so excited.

Another place our early birds might like to visit is Spanish Village Art Center (at Balboa Park). It is a hidden gem at the back of the park. The buildings are done in the Spanish architecture style and contain working artists' studios and stores (selling handmade art, jewelry, glass, clothing, etc.). There is also a small sculpture garden there. It fun to look around and talk with the artists. The village has lots of good sketchbook possibilities too.

jazzie
01-13-2016, 03:27 PM
Good idea Tandy - it's free and there's so much of Balboa Park to see some might want to go again on another day. I've had lunch at The Prado (https://cohnrestaurants.com/theprado/menu) before and it's a fun spot/reasonably priced splurge (for SD!)

[I had the soup & salad and it was good - one of my lunchmates had the mussels and raved about them!]

but there are other spots to grab grub in BP or North Park/Hillcrest

Oh and I'd better get started making stuff - a sketchbook/art journal and things to trade.

I'm stopping for a few days in Santa Cruz on the way down and visiting a weaving studio where I'll spend some time making garments from handwoven fabric - so I also need to weave the fabric for that.

Yikes, I've got lots to do.

I'm so excited.

She is all registered and all set!

Dawn - you will probably want to visit the Visions Art Museum (http://visionsartmuseum.org/) within walking distance of the hotel. I've been a few times and am always amazed at the work they exhibit.

Good idea Tandy - it's free and there's so much of Balboa Park to see some might want to go again on another day. I've had lunch at The Prado (https://cohnrestaurants.com/theprado/menu) before and it's a fun spot/reasonably priced splurge (for SD!)

I've also eaten at The Prado on numerous occasions and have always enjoyed my meal. Well, great food is one thing San Diego has NO shortage of!

but there are other spots to grab grub in BP or North Park/Hillcrest

Hillcrest is also where the Artist & Craftsman Supply (http://www.artistcraftsman.com) is located. I LOVE that store!

Is that the spot Linda was talking about for encaustic supplies?

I still have never been in there because of the one way street & parking issue.

Is it Tandy? I am intrigued but I am not so sure it will work for me. Their waxes look and sound really interesting. But apparently they are much larger blocks and I $19 per color. Also I do not see the papers I use at all, and that is what I need most.

I may just have to find a different souvenir for this trip and get my encaustic stuff mail ordered as I usually do. Probably a few months down the line, I just won't be doing anymore until then.

It has been brought to my attention again, that I really do not have very much washi tape. But I will have lots of art to trade of several varieties. Would anyone be interested trade me some washi tape (wrapped around a playing card like the do for pocket letters)for some art, or some other art supply I have like yarns....? PM me...

Uh, one way street and parking issue...Blick has that same problem silly girl. Artist and Craftsman Supply is so worth a visit! They were larger and easier to get into when they were in old town, but they are still fabulous.

Oh Blick's parking lot blows! I don't park there because I don't have a deathwish and more importantly, they don't let you park there for more than thirty minutes. Who can get through Blick in less than 30 mins? They're NUTS! I park on the street.

Can everyone let me know arrival and departure times so I can get a list going - I have the dates from the registration forms, but no specifics for most of the group.

If you're flying in, you can give me your flight info also.
If you're driving in, an ETA/ETD will be helpful for planning some things.
It can be here or on the FB page, public or PM - your choice.

THANKS!

For anyone else who is directionally challenged, the Sugar Skull Template is in the FILES/DOCS section of the FB page. Any more info other than what is on Post #2 will have to be from Helene, and she's guarding her secrets closely. I really don't know how it works!

Helene
01-31-2016, 03:02 PM
That's right!
It's a different set of rules. We did this at work and everyone seem to prefer that style of White Elephant exchange...because it removes the 'open' stealing out of the equation. Everything is by LUCK (or badluck if you choose to look at it that way ;)) and totally contingent upon your roll of the dice, which makes it fair for all players! Think LAS VEGAS!

For example: in the event that an artist made her skull in solid GOLD....the one who ends up with it will be totally random since the only 'stealing' that occurs is dictated by the number you roll and its corresponding command!

No more uncontrollable sobbing, hunger strikes, duel challenges, fist-fighting and hair-pulling in the lobby!
(as solid GOLD has been knows to make people lose their marbles and lead to MURDER!!!!!)
:biglaugh:
Although some post-game HAGGLING, TRADING, BRIBING, MOB ATTACKS or AUCTIONS could very well happen....
I hope you like it....

I'm not sure any of us have done puzzles like these before, so we'll see what happens.

There are examples of other peoples work under the GROUP PROJECT heading ON POST #2. Just click on the words in blue for ideas, but basically it's artist's choice - and that's kind of what will make the crazy quilt look work if everyone does what they are good at, their style will show through.

If you have any love to show the hotel, they would appreciate it on TripAdvisor.
I did the survey they sent through email and a TripAdvisor section was at the end of that, but I'm thinking that would have only been sent to those that made a reservation. However what I wrote isn't up, so maybe it's better to go directly to TripAdvisor (http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g60750-d656430-Reviews-Homewood_Suites_by_Hilton_San_Diego_Airport_Libert y_Station-San_Diego_California.html)
