Lynn, the hot press would be nice. Or you can join both groups. Let me know. Dana, should I split you up into the 2 groups?

Sue, I've added you to group 2

I'm going to go to the art supply store today and see what yummy paper they have.

Lets try to keep the swap to really good quality paper. This will be a good way to get samples of good paper cheaply then.

ADS, does Oriental Rice paper require a special type of watercolour? How thick is it?

You can use any watercolour or ink on it. It is thin (approx copier paper weight), but is an excellent material to work on. Watercolours and inks flow beautifully on it. It can be quite expensive to buy, but I ordered a few sheets and they were out of stock and they sent me a roll of it instead. I will put in 3 ATC's sized pieces for each person in my group as it's not very thick.

ADS, you need to let them dry a long time. Its plastic, so watercolors aren't absorbed at all on it.

Aquarelle Arches 140# hot press
Aquabee 90# Hemp

If any of the below papers are ok, I'd like to be in Group 1, please.

I have:
Terschelling (Holland) 300gsm Cold Pressed
Saunders Waterford 300 gsm Hot Pressed
The Langton (Daler Rowney) 300 gsm NOT (cold-pressed) Grain Fin
Daler Rowney Aquafine 250 gsm (110 lb) Grain Fin Cold Pressed (NOT)

- The difference between the two Daler-Rowneys other than weight is the Langton is more textured (traditionally mould-made). For a Cold Pressed paper the Aquafine is quite smooth.

adifferentstory
05-09-2008, 01:40 AM
Instead of writing on the backs of the yupo paper why don't you put each ATC size piece in a trading card sleeve and slip in a piece of paper with your user names and type of paper on. I will be doing that with the oriental rice paper as it's fairly thin and don't want to ruin it.

AnitaM
05-09-2008, 05:46 AM
Ok just to make sure I have got this right (I know being a bit thick!!) we are cutting the paper into x12 ATC's putting them in a sleeve with description weight, user name etc and then sending them - right?

Could I have an address to send to please? Also is there a paypal account where I can send money to?

rkolig
05-09-2008, 08:07 AM
Anita, yes you're cutting them to ATC size. You can put them into a sleeve to protect them, but you don't have to (more weight). Depending on the thickness of them, you could probably get 3 or 4 into one sleeve. 12 cards will quickly go over the minimum postal limit, so I'm going to try to keep the weight down as much as possible.

As far as Paypal. I have an account, but don't bother. If you can't access a US dollar, I'll cover the return. I'll PM you my address.

Will 2 x 52c (Canadian) stamps cover postage to the UK. If not how many US$'s will cover it?

rkolig
05-09-2008, 08:29 AM
No. Postage to the UK will be at around $1.50 (minimum). Postage to the US from Canada is 96 cents. And that depends on if we can stay under the minimum, which I think we're gonna go over. 12 blanks with 1 300 lb'er may quickly put us over. I haven't checked yet, but will quickly find out.

If you have any stamps to send that would be great, but I know I'll end up paying some postage, so...hey...get me while I have the money. LOL

Please, don't anyone send me bubble wraps!!! I won't use them.

You know what? I think I'm going to take a test envie to the post office today and find out what postage for 12 140 lb cards would be to US and UK. I'll let you know then.

Has anyone seen this in the stores? This is a watercolor paper sampler from Strathmore with 2-3 sheets each of different types of paper all in one pad. I can just make out from the picture that it contains:

Imperial 140 lb rough, 2 sheets
Imperial 140 lb CP, 2 sheets
Imperial 140 lb HP, 2 sheets
Aquarius II 80 lb (?) CP, 3 sheets,
Gemini 140 lb rough, 2 sheets
Gemini 140 lb CP, 2 sheets

rkolig
05-09-2008, 10:03 AM
Inkleaves, I haven't seen any of these, but what I've read says that the sampler is their top of the line stuff.

The Imperial is 100% cotton, Aquarius II is a blend. Gemini is supposedly for intermediate to advanced artists and is 100% cotton.

rkolig
05-09-2008, 10:04 AM
Here's the update on the postage.

To the US it will likely be $1.15
to UK or Australia or whereever = 2.30
Within Canada = 96 cents

AnitaM
05-09-2008, 10:08 AM
Does any of the UK people know if I can just buy US dollars from the post office or bank - what denominations do they do them in? any help would be appreciated its very fustrating not being able to pay.

rkolig
05-09-2008, 10:27 AM
You can get some at a bank or a currency exchange. Not sure they'd carry 1 dollar bills tho.

Don't sweat it too much. If you can easily get something fine, if not and you'd like to, slip in a couple extra blanks or an ATC or something. Honestly, when you host, you know there is going to be some out of pocket expense. If I upped it to a 3rd group, I'd worry more, but as is, I can handle it. I won't starve. OK?

If we do this again, what we should do is figure out how many blanks you can send and still stay under the weight limit for 1 stamp. My guess is 6 or 8.

Thanks :) That sounds pretty good, to be able to try out a variety of the good stuff for US$8.13; might look out for it next time I'm at the art store. But I'm guessing it would be dangerous on the pocketbook to fall in love with any of the papers and have to buy them in sheets or blocks!

Sorry, when I started this I didn't think of weight, I knew I could only have twelve players as it was my first swop, so that was the reason for the size of group.
Today I got some Windsor & Newton Cotman 200lbs/425gsm cold pressed/not*grain fin. It's a rather nice thick one.
I also got a Goldline 90lbs/200gsm cold press that is made from a mix of cotton and lignin free cellulose.
Quite honestly, I was rather disappointed in our local art store, but I suppose they cater to demand. I could've got a wide selection of 140lb, but very little else.

If you write light enough with pencil it won't matter much as it will erase easily. Besides you can paint on both sides. If you plan to have alot of detail, you'd use the smoother side, if not, then you'd use the rougher side.

I can write very lightly so the marks can be erased or easily covered with the artwork.

If you write light enough with pencil it won't matter much as it will erase easily. Besides you can paint on both sides. If you plan to have alot of detail, you'd use the smoother side, if not, then you'd use the rougher side.

Thanks for claifying that mary. My art teacher told me there was a right and wrong side. Guess he was not as good as I thought. It was many, many years ago so maybe watercolour paper did have a right and wrong side then.

I cut up my paper and made the blanks just a smidge bigger - they fit into the sleeves but are a bit tight. I like having an edge to trim off so... I also cut up the leftover pieces after the blanks were cut and tucked them into the sleeves also, just a little bit more for playing with...

They'll be going out today or tomorrow, Mary. I'll pm you to confirm when they hit the PO.

Some art papers are sized on only one side--thus there would be a "right" side.
Some are sized internally--thus throughout. And unless the surface is treated differently on each side, you still have two "right" sides to use. It then becomes a matter of preference. I believe the better quality papers have internal sizing. But, I've been wrong before.

Are we sending them naked, or in sleeves?

I don't always pay attention. I might choose the side with tooth if I am using pencil, the smooth side with ink or paint. Don't fret the details. We are artists after all; you know, creative types, rule breakers.

If you really want to know what happens, put paint, pencil, ink on both sides. make your own little paper performance swatches. Don't forget to label them though.

I don't think there is an objective "right" side, only subjective right sides. Use the surface and the brands you prefer. My preference is for hot press (AKA plate finish). I do like some sizing. But, I also really like working with Canson Mi-Tientes pastel paper. It has a "velvetish" (slightly fuzzy?) side and a smoother side. I prefer the fuzzier side with the Mi-Tientes. Meh.

I buy and use according to finish, then weight (at least 90# or heavier), then quality. I buy the best quality I can afford. A swap like this is a wonderful opportunity to try other types without having to lay out the bucks for a whole sheet or tablet.

I found a Windsor-Newton Link (http://www.winsornewton.com/main.aspx?PageID=117) for you.

Oh, and RE DIY sizing, essentially when a person lays down a layer of gesso, or acrylic varnish, they are "sizing" the surface.

What a great idea to do swaptches. I have a few different brands of watercolour paper. I mainly use 300g (140lb). I can't afford the really expensive ones and i'm not artisitic enough to warrent the cost. Thank you for all the advice and link. I will take a good look at that site tomorrow.

Years ago, I took a watercolour class at the local Community College (I need to take another one). I still have some of the expensive paper that we used to create color wheels. I'm saving it to paint on both the other side and all the little unpainted bits. Color wheels seemed like such a waste for such good paper. I also have a leftover piece of 300 lb paper that I had tried painting clouds and sky on. I can't bear to throw it away. I keep thinking there MUST be a way for me to use it.

Ok, it seems I created a misunderstanding. It is not black watercolor paper. It is black pastel paper. But, I use it with acrylics all the time. It does require an opaque medium like pastels, acrylic, gouache, tempera, gel pen, etc.

I can send a blank for each person interested. I will put them in a sleeve with your screen name on it to make it easier for our host. IF that is acceptable with rk.

Post your desire in this thread or send me a PM. I will hold off sending my stuff out until next Friday to allow for this.

You lay out each return envelope. Then deal out one card of each type to each person while trying to remember not to give the sender one of his/hers back. Piece of cake.http://www.migunowners.org/forum/images/smilies/puppy_dog_eyes.gifhttp://bestsmileys.com/silly/13.gif

First I'll need to separate the papers into groups 1 and 2, then line up the names and papers with each group, then do what TC said, THEN then add the black to the black list.

LOL

I agree with TheeCoyote’s previous post, I had anticipated you would not send back 12 to me but 11. The couple of extra are for you in lieu of postage, as posting to Australia is pretty expensive!! :)

The site has a rule, no uneven swaps, and being staff and all, I can't really throw my weight around can I? LOL

Besides, this was never intended to be uneven, I just ran with the idea and didn't even think about it. I'll throw a Yupo in for everyone, I had them all cut up anyway.

Everyone is being way generous with the extra bits, so I'm not the least bit worried.

Just found this thread. It says sign up and withdrawal date is tomorrow, but it looks like you have two full groups already.

Do you have a wait list, or somehow room for one more? I have :

Swathmore 140 lb. cold press
and Fredrix canvas -medium texture

Sorry Patti, all full up and everybody has checked in and said "the cheque is in the mail". There was certainly alot of interest tho. Don't be surprised if another one is offered at some point.

I'm not going to host another paper swap anytime soon. What I think I'd like to do is host a swap for playing with the paper we've gotten from this one. I'm thinking of diff ways to frame it. Input from you guys would certainly be considered.

One option would be to have everyone use 3 diff papers and paint the same subject (or close to) on each one.

Since I started the mail art craze, I have only had two mailings go missing. Both of those since last November and both were-----to Canada! I was getting discouraged.
Glad that's not the case this time.
