Please remember it can take 2 weeks for mail to reach the UK. Post in plenty of time.
Preparing your domino
You will need to prepare your domino before using any medium on it. I find the best way to do this is to sand the domino to remove the shine and this gives your domino some tooth for your medium to stick to. Wash the domino after to make sure there is no dust or grease on the domino. Dry thoroughly.
What glue should I use?
I find that Diamond glaze is a fantastic glue and glaze for dominoes. You can stick paper with it, attach beads to it and even glaze your finished piece. Acrylic gel mediums are also good for sticking paper to the dominoes. Two part epoxy glues are excellent for gluing fittings to your domino and also for attaching metal charms and beads.
What should I use to glaze my domino?
Diamond glaze is a fantastic glaze for dominoes. It makes the finished piece shiny and also protects it. Acrylic gel mediums are also good for sealing your finished piece. When glazing you will first need to put a thin coat of glaze on with your finger tip. This will help to reduce smudging. Build up in thin layers.
What paints, pens and pencils can I use?
You can paint or draw with acrylic inks. You can also paint with acrylic paint. You may draw with permanent markers. I find the Bic Mark-It markers the best but Sharpies and other brands are also fine. You can also draw with blendable coloured pencils. Sometimes I work with both marker pens and pencils together. If working with pencil you will need to glaze your finished piece, but I like to glaze most of my domino art.
Rubber stamping on dominoes.
You will need to use a Stazon ink pad or Brilliance ink pad on dominoes. You can heat set it with your heat tool. Always tap the ink pad onto your stamp (not the other way around) tap on lightly until the stamp is covered or the portion of the stamp you are using. Next take your domino to your stamp. The image is less likely to smudge by doing this. Put firm even pressure on the domino and carefully remove.
Alcohol inks
Alcohol inks are perfect on dominoes. I use them to create fantastic backgrounds.
Of course you may have your own favorites and also you can experiment. Just make sure that anything glued onto the domino is glued on firmly. Paper should not be lifting and fittings should not be falling off. Stamped images should be perfect and not smudged. Make sure the medium you use does not rub off and is sealed for protection if needed.
Most of all have fun creating your domino art.
Please load pictures of your finished dominoes onto this thread.

I like those. Lots of depth. How did you do them?
Loralou
05-09-2008, 06:39 AM
I used metallic paint underneath, then added about 7 layers of UTTE, then stamped an image into it using stazon ink, then I let it harden.
Then I used metallic pen and rubbed over it.
Finally sealed with gel medium.
I am about to try out Emmas idea of using prints of ATC's on dominoes. We shall see how it turns out!

Loralou, those are fantastic. Love the way you can do so much with UTEE. I too never tried more than 3 layers, but will have to do so soon. Love that look. And of course, I really do love dragonflies. They are my favorite critters.

Ria they are fantastic. Is that fake fur you put around the kitty one? How did you glue it on?
On the kitty one - it is a furry black thread, I bought a card of threads/ribbons, and this was one of them, I attached this using a gluegun and general purpose glue stick, I tried PVA, but found it wasn't strong enough!

It's a lovely thread. I'm not allowed near a glue gun anymore. I always burn myself on it LOL I just use the glue sticks and cut off thin slices and then sometimes cut them into quarters. I then place a piece of the cut stick where I want it. Hold in place with a scalpel or tweezers and then heat with a heat gun and then put on what I want to attach.

Hi ADS, just wanted to know some more about the art dominoes - other than writing one's user name on the back with a Sharpie, do the backs of the dominoes get decorated too? Pips filled in, for example? I'm very, very tempted here but I want to make sure I know more about this before I commit. 'Don't want to make a major mistake like undecorated backs if that's the standard. Thanks.
adifferentstory
05-16-2008, 02:59 PM
It depends on the artist really. Some decorate the backs and some don't. I'm one of those people who can't make up my mind and I sometimes fill in the back and sometimes I don't LOL. It can also depend on what your actually making. The answer is. It's entirely up to you art for my sanity,.

I have questions too. Are you using standard black dominoes? I have 3 cream colored ones from the hobby store, but my others are the standard black dragon type. Can the dominoes be any size? By the way, I tried the alcohol and sharpies trick on slick finish cardboard, and I'd say it was pretty much a complete failure. Have you used this technique? My ink stayed where I put it originally will very little running unlike using the regular alcohol inks.

Well so far i've not found a way to use the black dominoes with the raise images on. I guess that site could be covers with polymer clay or something else to create a flat surface. I tend to use the smooth cream ones as you already have a blank canvas to work on. If you are short on dominoes, then let me know and I can mail you some.
No I haven't tried that technique. I'll give it a go tomorrow and see if I get a different result. What I have used to create a faux polished stone effect is dye ink pads and rubbing alcohol (surgical spirit). I scrunch up some kitchen roll and apply a bit of the alcohol and then touch it to the dye ink pad surface. Pucnce onto a gloss surface. Use 3 colours for maximum effect. This works really well. I used a cheap glossy photo paper from a £1 shop.
I have the three white ones (one is smaller) and I can probably find others somewhere. Thanks for offering to send them, but I don't think that will be necessary. Maybe the method you describe would also work with the sharpies, using them to make a kind of pool of color with the alcohol and then applying with the plastic wrap. My favorite thing is to experiment; so I'll try again!
adifferentstory
05-16-2008, 04:47 PM
You need to have a glossy surface so practice on a piece of glossy card. Scribble on to some plastic, a plastic sandwich bag should work and then go from there. Plastic wrap would be good. I can never get a piece off the roll so that is why I use kitchen paper. One technicqu I found was good, with alcohol inks and may work for this is to wear a marigold glove (they are the rubber glove you use when washing up), they have a ridged squarish bit on the fingers (I assume to help with gripping your best china), I dipped the ridged bit into the alcohol inks and patted onto the glossy surface. i used varoius colour and I got a snake skin effect. I may use this on this swap.

Thank goodness this swap isn't due till mid-end July! I used that Paper Glaze which is very cool, but it turned cloudy and I freaked out but then I was told to wait that it might just be getting that way because it was wet. Okay so it's clear now and resulted in a very nice thick clear coat however, it took a week to dry! Holy mackarel!
ADS, I did a domino ornament using friendly plastic and perhaps it was just this batch, but I found that it harbored a great deal of animosity towards me and was not friendly at all. So about three sticks of the stuff later, I finally got a nice result; personally I think it was a fluke that I managed one good result.

Loralou- those are way cool! I love the textures - nice work! I just finished mine - these are the first dominoes I've ever made, and I'm happy with the way they came out. making htem is so addictive, too! I made them all into charms/ornaments so they can be worn or hung. I used the smaller sized bamboo ones, cause they had predrilled holes in them. here's a pic

ROFL! I agree, me too! The predrilled ones are much safer! you could glue a pin back to them - people could wear them as pins. and you could string a necklace or cord through the pin back, too. just a thought!

I can send you some Loralou. I kind of bought some last week and found the ones I had before LOL They are best glued on with a 2 part expoxy glue (Araldite). To turn the dominoes into a pendant I use beads with a 2,, hole and glue them on with the same glue.

You are so kind ADS, you have already sent me dominoes lol Let me see if I can find them at hobbycraft :D Or I might leave them as dominoes and let people alter them in jewellery if they want to.
I was just on flickr looking for inspiration and the only domino group on there was invite only, so I started a new one! Anyone wanna join and add their domino photos please do, I'm a bit lonely in there.

Welcome to the swap duckface.
Wonderful dominoes, and very different from each other!
I'm posting two. One did not scan very well (cave cat). I think they'll be magnets as the dominoes are rather large. Butterfly is collaged. Primitive cat stamped. Used UTEE
alcohol inks, and Diamond Glaze on both. The butterfly as a trail of fine glitter as well.

ADS, I did a domino ornament using friendly plastic and perhaps it was just this batch, but I found that it harbored a great deal of animosity towards me and was not friendly at all. So about three sticks of the stuff later, I finally got a nice result; personally I think it was a fluke that I managed one good result.
I was just lurking along reading the thread, trying to decide if I wanted to try it out when I found this about the friendly plastic... LOL! What a good way to describe it! hehe When I mess with friendly plastic I feel like the tar baby in those kids stories from breir rabbit (? sp ?) i think it was. Then when I saw the Doctor Who episode where the plastic comes to life, I really sympathized with them, cause I know how it feels hehe The friendly plastic gets a mind of its own. It was hilarious when the doctor showed that piece of anti-plastic that looked like a piece of not-so-friendly plastic. hehe
(ok... did any of you understand a bit what I was describing? lol I know there's a few doctor who fans around here ;) )
as for the subject of dominoes... I'm going to go play with some and see where it gets me... if I have any luck, i'll be back to sign up.

I make marbled charms out of friendly plastic, so I can feel your pain! You never know exactly what that stuff is going to do...or where the bubbles will randomly pop up...kind of cool when it actually works, though.

Friendly plastic - are you girls using the black heat gun? If you are don't its too hot or use from quite a distance. I use the white (hairdryer shaped) heat gun because it heats at a slower pace and is perfect for friendly plastic and UTEE as well - you can see the plastic turning to the right temprature - (if that makes sense). The other thing you have to remember is that some pieces of friendly plastic can of 'off' - if you bend the strip and it snaps then its no good -use it to make a base for round beads.
If you don't have a heat gun you can use the hot water method. the only problem with that is keeping the water at a conistant temprature and then gauging if it is 'done' and then the hassle of having to take it out without of the water without damaging it.
Well there's my tuppence worth.

Oh Anita, thank you so so much - I tried cutting and bending the strips but they break off so it really might be a hostile batch I got a hold of! I'm going to try the hairdryer technique just in case though. Thanks again for the "tuppence worth!" :)

Loralou your dominos are stunning - i drill mine side to side, and yep i do have a vice i put them in which is a very heavy one so vert stable - which i got from screw fix - its called a 4" flat drill press vice - code 46988-91 and it was only 12.99 they do deliver - worth every penny as i use it lots, also use it when soldering as it stands up to LOADS of heat also a bashing from a blow torch (mmm i should carry a goverment health warning:twitcy:) i use my dremel which is great, also soldered around the edges and soldered on the jump rings to the top. I got my dominos from Tesco in a large tin (which is now waiting to be altered ) and i think they were only £1.50 in the sale
so looking forward to getting returns on this swap, will post some photo's later

Well, I've completed a few more, and ya know what? They grow on you. Now that I have 14 finished I find I really do like them all, not just one as I said. Now my problem is going to be chosing which ones I'm willing to part with. HELP!
As soon as the last ones are dry (varnished) I scan and show. My scanner is giving me problems tho. I got this great set of 120 colored gel pens at Sam's club, and I love the way thing look colored with the bright and glittery colors, but when I scan them, it washes those bright and glittery colors away and everything that is supposed to be bright pink or sparkly green, look just white or dull. No color no sparkle. So it's embarrasing to post them. But I'll try.

I always mark them as a gift and also as handmade craft items. Just a not when sending t the uk, you should always put a $ vales on them as customs will just guess if there isn't. We have to pay duty and tax on gifts too. always put it under $14. We get charged tax on anything over $14 and anything over $36 we pay duty. That is why it is not worth us buying anything from the USA.

Three more dominoes. The Japanese print has side edging of red and white origami paper. The green domino is its actual color, heavier than most and made perhaps of Bakelite or some such product, has small screw top in middle of other side of domino (to raise it a bit, and make it easier for picking up?). I think it is antique. I liked the simplicity of the woman's partial face.
And the last two. Both are made using the same stamp. The blackbird is collaged onto stamped background over metallic gold acrylic back ground. Other one used alcohol ink and stamped image.

I made a domino into a necklace and gave it to a friend, she wore it all week and when I saw her the following week the image was peeling off! I had painted it in permanent marker, stamped and then glazed with diamond glaze!
I was gutted and am now re-thinking my dominoes.
Why do you think it happened?
adifferentstory
06-23-2008, 03:26 PM
What a shame. Diamond glaze is usually an excellent sealer. It could be possible the the image was not glued properly. Water or moisture may have got in. I make sure I spread diamond glaze over the top of the domino and then firmly sticking it down. Also the may not be enough glaze over the image and around the sides. If cluing on objects you must not leave any parts uncovered. There are two ways to go about this and the second way may be better for you if gluing one large image.
1. Apply a thin layer of diamond glaze on the front and sides of the domino. Allow to dry. Build up in thin layers and allwo to dry in between. Apply about 4 layers.
2. Apply a thin layer of diamond glaze on top and sides of domino and allow to dry. Apply a thick layer straight from the nozzle to the top of the domino. Apply in a continuous movement to avoid bubbles and missed areas. To get rid of any bubble use a pin, you may have to move the bubble to the edge for it to go. Do the same with the sides when dry. You can get right to the edge without it spilling over the sides if you are careful. Apply the diamond glaze where you are going to leave it to dry as moving may cause it to spill over the sides. Allow this layer to dry overnight and don't be pempted to touch it LOL How many have I ruined that way? Mmmm i'm not telling LOL

I'm just sealing them now with acrylic spray sealer (diamond glaze adn alcohol inks don't mix, I discovered...). But boy, I've had issues!

If you are stamping on an alcohol painted background I would seal it first and then stamp on it as stazon does not take well. Always take your dominoe to the stamp its easier to control and see where you are putting the design.

Ah, great idea! I've been taking the stamp to the domino, and it does make sense to do it the other way around...a couple people have tossed me that good advice; thanks!

Love that domino Anita. One of my favourite themes and lovely colours too.
I used diamond glaze over alcohol inks and it changed the colours. for me this was good as I loved the brighter colours I got.
I have been buying vintage dominoes on ebay. I have a couple of lovely bone and wood sets now plus a set of miniature 2 x 1 cme bone dominoes that are just so cute that I can't alter them at the moment LOL

Boy, I was reading some where on the internet there this stuff I believe called "Goo Be Gone" has anyone heard of it? From what I understood you can wipe your mistakes off and start all over again.

I use surgial spirit (rubbing alcohol) to remove any alcohol base mediums such as alcohol ink and sharpie pens.
We all seem to learn something new here. I'll have to have a look and see if I can find anything out about that Goo stuff.

Definately not. Even if it's a medium that will not come off you can still cover them in paper and collage them.

Quick question before I send in my goodies - are we making the dominoes into jewellery or are we just sending them in decorated and letting the recipient decide what to do with them? My dominoes have got holes going across the top and can be made into necklaces or pins by putting pin backs non or even as fridge magnets.

They can be anything you want Anita. As they have holes in the would probably suit something that hangs.
Any theme, any medium. Please put a lot of effort into your domino. If using glue please make sure items are stuck down well. Rubber stamped images should be perfect. Embellish if you wish. These can be made into pieces of jewelry, fridge magnets, charms, without fittings and anything else you want to make them into. I understand that participants are at different levels of experience and I will endeavor to swap quality for quality but you will receive a mix of mediums in your returns. All I ask is that you put the effort into you dominoes, You may use the standard size domino or the smaller domino.

ok thanks - wasn't sure if I was to make them up or not - I think I will send mine as pendants as this was what I had intended them to be.

I use Goo Gone. It removes grease, gum, stickers, crayon, tape. It's citris powered. I haven't tried it for taking stuff off dominos. But it wouldn't surprise me if it would work. It's good stuff. You can find it at places like Michaels and Walmart and even some supermarkets. Not cheap but worth the cost.

BTW I use Tesco naturally kitchen cleaner to clean my rubber stamps. For pigment and dye ink it just spray on and the ink just slides off and then give it a quick rinse. For stazon spray on and use a rub it scrub it pad.
