ATC: Fall Encaustic Style, due October 17, 2016
This is a swap for ATC's that uses Melted crayons as encaustic style in a FALL Theme. Encaustic style is using melted wax as the medium. Yes, you can purchase encaustic mediums and paints, however, for this swap let's see what other wax sources we can use as well.

Most of you know me I love to recycle, reuse, and create. Crayons are a good starting point, however, you can also use beeswax, candles, water color crayons, gel sticks, oil pastel sticks, and anything wax based. You can add collage, mixed media and other embellishments to the cards if you wish but make the main focus of the cards in the encaustic technique, meaning using wax. Please, do not place a crayon on a page and use a blow dryer to allow the crayon to ooze down the page put some Hand Drawn/Hand Painted/Collage/Mixed Media effort into this.

BUT be sure to seal the cards in some way, as melted crayons can be quite brittle and flake off. You can use a medium for wax, gel medium, beeswax, or try liquid wax clear. BE SURE the ATC is sturdy. I use small corrugated cardboard for my base.I would love to see what people come up with for the crayons in a Fall theme. (Be careful with fumes from melted crayons, I have heard they can irritate if gotten too hot. If you smell your crayons then they are to hot. Please use a low heat tool.)

You can add so much depth and layers to your art. You can write, carve, pull, clump up, smooth out, and mask with this technique. There are so many ways of encaustic wax art all over the internet and youtube, however, do what works best for you. Encaustic can be abstract to very carved detailed work. Be creative and have fun with this Fall Theme of colors. You can use so many tools, stamps, stencils, heat tools, brushes, doodles, carvings, and even glitter! You can mix it up with other media and or even a collage. Use the supplies that you have on hand. Remember, recycle, reuse and create!

Remember, place your dark colors on first then the lighter colors. If you don't you might end up with mud!
Once cooled you can rub your finger over the ATC causing some friction to 'shine up' the wax or brush with a paint brush.
I also found out that if you use gesso/medium to prep your paper please remember NOT TO use an acrylic base medium or acrylic gesso to prep your page because the art work will slide right off.
If crayons are smelly you have them to hot, use low temp heat tool.
Use well ventilated area with protective surface.
The different brands of supplies will also make a difference. My video explains more.
As always when dealing with heat, BE CAREFUL! Lol!
The Rules:
* All cards must be 2.5" x 3.5" with straight edges, on thick paper, heavy card stock, or cardboard. We don't want any cracking or flaking. If they take more than one stamp to send, please include the same amount to return.
* Best work only please. I will try my best to swap effort for effort. Please only send in art you'd be happy to receive.
* Please sign up by posting to this thread, NOT through a PM.
* No problem if you have to drop out but please let me know. I will have a waiting list so I can place players who want to sign up but missed the opportunity since I have limited number of participants. No cards and no communication will result in a neutral iTrader.
* Each card should be sent in its own plastic sleeve.
* Please include username, real name, and swap name on the back of your cards so we can leave Rep Points. Make sure we will be able to read the username.

* Please make sure to package your cards to where they arrive safely and undamaged. Follow the mailing tips from AFA http://www.atcsforall.com/forum/showthread.php?t=909

*My post will charge according to the thickness as well as the weight of the envelope so please watch the embellishments If you have knotted or bumpy cards be sure to add extra postage. Be sure the embellishments do not puncture the envelope. Must be as flat as possible.
* USA participants - Please send the same number of stamps to me that it takes to mail your cards. Please include a SASE the same size that you mailed your cards to me in.
* INTERNATIONAL participants -I will cover postage for the first two international players. For others, I will accept unused US/Global postage stamps or ($1) well concealed US dollar.
*Remember to include your username and swap name on the back of the ATC and the back flap of the envelope so the recipients can leave REP points. Remember to leave me (pennydoodles) the host an iTrade when you receive your cards which is most appreciated.
* I plan to swap on time. If cards are not in my hands by October 17, they will be returned to you, using your envelope.
* Please send me a PM when you need my address.
* Host cards are not required, but definitely very appreciated.

I made these cards below using melted crayons with a glue gun then rubbed them to shine, and sealed them with elmers glue all but then tried the liquid wax which worked better. The pictures really do not show the depth and detail of the encaustic wax design but I am working on more.

I will be posting some of my Encaustic ATC's along the thread for inspiration so keep an eye out for them!
If you have questions about encaustic PM me please. Thanks!

interesting... so it is just wax for this swap or can it be wax and paper collage?

09-06-2016, 11:04 AM
Sophie's Mom as long as the main focus is in the encaustic style using the wax. I did add the mixed media and collage to the method as well. Encaustic can be so varied. Thanks

Here are some more samples of encaustic with crayons. I did this with the glue gun drop down method of encaustic. I placed the crayon onto the hot tip of the glue gun and then allowed the wax to drop. I moved the melted wax around with the tip of my glue gun. I went in later and added depth and sort of carved around my image with a carving clay tool.

More Encaustic Style with Crayons

Anyone want to play with wax? This is my first swap!

I have made my own video about my way of encaustic using a glue gun. Check out pennydoodles on youtube, or if you PM me I will send you the link. I am not selling anything just showing my art for this swap.

09-09-2016, 02:25 PM
I will play! I've never done anything like this before but watched your video and off to buy a glue gun :)

09-09-2016, 03:17 PM
This could get addicting very easily! Here's my first one ever. I put a layer of glue down on my cardboard randomly sprinkled chopped crayon on and heated with my embossing gun. Messy but FUN!

09-09-2016, 11:32 PM
Thank you Cindylou for playing. That looks great. I love the colors. I am working on a collage piece tonight. I just found wax liquid used as a sealer for chalk that you brush on. It comes in opaque and clear. Can't wait to try it.

09-11-2016, 06:48 PM
Where did you find the sealer? I would love to try it myself. So far I've added drops of gold ink and brushed a sealer mixed with perfect pearls for a shimmer on my pieces and trying to figure out what else I want to add to finish them.

09-11-2016, 09:13 PM
It's made by folk art at Michael's when they had 40% off 3 days ago. It's clear wax. It really did a great job.

This is a pic of the collage (that I don't really like) but anyways the clear wax is great, and it is clear. I brushed it over my other wax crayon cards and it sealed them perfect.

09-11-2016, 09:26 PM
I think I would like to give this a run! congrats on your first swap pennydoodles!

You can even carve in the wax to make more details and the underneath to show through. I might try this technique to show you. I will get busy creating......be watching for the pic of the finished art.

09-19-2016, 07:09 AM
Here is an embed in the wax that I carved out of the liquid wax. There are layers and layers of wax so it will take some time to dry.

wow penny doodles, that card is cool!
I have completed my four and sent them out. Because of the nature of them...ha ha...(they are leaves from Colorado that I found last weekend) I didn't scan them. I used beeswax on them and hope that it is what you were looking for, or close!

09-21-2016, 11:53 PM
Thank you. Can't wait to see them.

09-25-2016, 02:09 PM

09-29-2016, 07:00 AM
I am going to try this for the first time also. I have crayons, I have a heat gun and hopefully I have some imagination. I will let you know when they are mailed.

09-29-2016, 09:35 AM
that's great londonont1 looking foward to seeing them.

10-01-2016, 03:37 PM
This video shows h (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fS4NXrFEfgU)ow you can use a heat gun to create encaustic style with crayons. however, not all brands of crayons act the same once they dry. Also remember to peel all crayons before using. lol! Just my experience....

10-01-2016, 03:38 PM
This video shows y (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=57FR1XYDdoA)ou how you can use a glue gun to melt the crayons to create a sunflower. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=57FR1XYDdoA

10-01-2016, 05:37 PM
Never again. (Until next time.) I started with some oil pastels but noticed my heat gun was not really getting hot enough to move them around. Got out some crayons and put them in my glue gun where they proceeded to melt and squirt uncontrollably and unexpectedly. Went back to heat gun which gave up and died. Back to glue gun that created a volcanic eruption that oozed wax over its sides, not from the point. Thankfully some of the wax did manage to land on the cards even if it was in globs. Got out the iron, thinking back to batik, and pressed the backs and created a mono print from each, but that left the cards muddy. I discovered I was at the End of the gel medium. I used puzzle saver that had never been opened. If they dry by Monday I will mail them on my way to buy a new heat gun, glue gun, gel medium. Cleaning will be a long process that I am not ready to tackle this month. The internet lies, the cloud is a myth, my technology has won this fight in less than three rounds. I am throwing in the towel. At least it will be there when I next enter the disaster I used to call a studio.
Had fun.

10-01-2016, 08:46 PM
Oh my, so sorry. I actually cleaned my glue gun out. So sorry you had an adventure. It does take some practice. My glue gun doesn't get all that hot since it is just a cheap one. I did try a blow dryer however I blowed the braker and the blow dryer caught on fire. lol! So I feel for you. I don't own a heat gun so I am glad I didn't try that. whew! I still think they are amazing. the colors and the swirls. My first ones looked like a black hole. I didn't realize I needed to allow the wax to cool from each color before I added other colors. I ended up with mud, black chunky mud. I did make a video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R8uwNPs9OyE) of how I did mine if interested. Maybe another go at it with some wax liquid from Folk Art. I use it too and it works way better. I brush it on then use my blow dryer to infuse it. I would have thrown in the towel too. Thanks you for having the courage to try it.

10-01-2016, 09:10 PM
Pennydoodles, I did have fun amoung the mess. I really think more people should try this swap because it introduces so many other options by mixing media and tools. I think next time, seriously, I would try collage and wax, or even wax transfer ( just heard of that.) Thanks again for the opportunity to try something new and have a story to tell about it.

10-01-2016, 09:27 PM
It was a challenge for me as well since I haven't done it for 10 years. I really like the wax and collage method. I am working on a wax transfer tonight. So I hopeing I can get that working. I really liked the liquid wax from folk art. It is clear and I am able to brush it on but it takes forever to dry. lol. Thanks.

10-02-2016, 12:19 PM
Transfer. I rubbed a little to hard but it is OK for me. I used a laser image and I should have used an ink jet but anyways I like it. I used an old bible page for the background then added 4 layers of liquid wax then the transfer.

10-02-2016, 09:56 PM
Gorgeous. Nicely done.

10-03-2016, 12:43 AM
I'm going to have to drop out. Sorry
