These all reflect my passion for anything by John Steinbeck.

Novels by Steinbeck that I especially enjoyed
Cannery Row (my absolute most favorite book)
Sweet Thursday (a sequel to Cannery Row)
Of Mice and Men
Tortilla Flat
Grapes of Wrath
East of Eden (semi-biographical)

Journal of a Novel by John Steinbeck (letters that JS wrote while writing East of Eden)
Log from the Sea of Cortez by John Steinbeck (an account of a six-week journey in 1940 with Ed Ricketts to the Gulf of California to collect marine specimens. The book inspired me to go to Baja California and the Gulf of California last year - traveled the whole length of Baja California.)

Between Pacific Tides by Calvin and Ricketts. (A field guide to Pacific Ocean tide pools. Ricketts is the man Steinbeck fictionalized in Cannery Row. Steinbeck wrote the forward to this book)

I think I will make a second book list, as you can probably tell by my username that I am a huge bookworm. I think I will do all fantasy novels.

any artemis fowl book - there are eight of them link (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artemis_Fowl_(series))
any Tortall or Magic Circle book by Tamara Pierce, of which there is over 30. link (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_works_by_Tamora_Pierce) Each of the names listed in here is the name of a series, not an individual book. And yeah, I think I've read just about all of them....

I would love to join this but I am having trouble working out how to show book spines with details on them in just collage/mixed media.
I have a cross-stitch pattern for books on a shelf but I would never be able to fit names and authors on the books. Not too many books are shown spine on so I can't even collage pictures I have found.

I have just been made a liar (ain't Google amazing?!?) As long as the book is not too obscure all I have to do is Google 'Book spine (name of book)' and I get images to choose from.

Sign me up to Group 3 - collage/mixed media.

My list:
any of the Pern/dragon books by Anne McCaffrey
The Crystal singer trilogy by Anne McCaffrey
any of the Camel Club (http://davidbaldaccibooklist.com/camel-club-series/) books by David Baldacci
Dune by Frank Herbert (NONE by his son)
Scarecrow by Matthew Reilly
any of the series of 'Miss Peregrine's peculiar children' by Ransom Riggs
any of the Dwarves (https://www.amazon.com/Dwarves-Markus-Heitz/dp/0316049441) series by Markus Heitz
Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte
any book by Agatha Christie
any of the Rain Wild Chronicles by Robin Hobb

I have to admit that I have 2 shelves (2 books deep) of Anne McCaffrey novels. I also enjoy her others series - the Powers That Be (or Petaybee), Acorna, the Brain ships, Doona (I always wanted to be part cat), etc.

Great list, kkporcupine! Before I had even heard of the classic "Great Expectations ", I saw a miniature diorama behind glass which just fascinated me. It was the scene of Miss Haversham seated at a long table beautifully set including a wedding cake. This bride did not look happy, and she appeared elderly. I was just so intrigued I had to find and read the book! (I forgot to include it on my list, but it certainly was memorable!)

I have either got the wrong end of the stick, or bitten off more than I can chew.

I drew a stack of books, but it is almost impossible to fit names and authors on the spine in such a tiny format. I looked up each book to check colour etc, but there are many different versions. Am I overthinking this?

I think the next one will be just a straight row, perspective was a nightmare :embarrassed:

Would you recognise these as yours dithespy?

Kimmie, was "They Loved to Laugh" about a family in on the Baltic Sea? Latvia? It's very fuzzy, but I swear I read that title years ago...

It's setting is a Quaker Settlement during colonial times where an affluent, orphaned young lady, Kat, comes to live with a large Quaker family with many rowdy sons. It's just such a sweet, charming read! Back in the day during school after lunch, our teacher lowered the lights and read aloud to the class this book a few chapters per day....and I NEVER forgot it. I found a reprint of it on ebay last year because I had to have it! lol

Ann, I'm doing a couple of mine the same way you did and it was really hard with the weird perspective. But yours look great! My first card I collaged with tiny little books in a bookcase. Not sure I can get the titles on there, but I'm going to give it a shot. Looking at the examples in the original post, I think we could do a simpler version. I'm doing some just the spines and trying to look up some fancy decorations for them. :) Yes, there are lots of versions of most books, so there's no "wrong" way to decorate them.

Hi everyone, I love all the book talk and recommendations! :)

Ann, your first card is lovely! And plumhill2001 is right, it is not required to make the books on the shelf look like the real books if you don't want to. Artist Jan Mount is very good at it, but there are lots of other artists that have made equally lovely shelves without making the books as realistic. I pinned some examples on Pinterest in the first post. I found that using a .005 mm Micron pen helped with adding the titles, which is what I used on the 2 examples I made. Collage artists might also find that typing the titles in tiny font might work for them.

Updating the bookshelves lists now! :)

KKpocupine - did you read 'Beowulf' in translation or the original Old English? I studied Old (Beowulf) and Middle (Chaucer) English as part of my undergrad degree. I loved the alliterative verse of Beowulf and the way that repetition built the tension.
Have you read any of Shakespeare's early works, like 'Coriolanus'? Shakespeare was my 'modern' author (he counts as Modern English?!?). The early plays are very much 'play in the pub, pot boilers' - lots of blood and guts and gore. It is funny to watch how he contrives to get dead bodies off stage (or else leaves them there hoping no-one will notice). Finesse developed later.
I am assuming that you are studying English (like I did) from your booklist - sorry if I am wrong.

ChronicReader,

Sorry to disappoint, but a couple of the books I chose for my bookshelf are not necessarily my favorite reads in content, but simply bring special childhood memories to mind. My parents gave me free reign over what I read when I was younger. I went through a phase when I'd go to the library, and bring home books based on their covers and print size (the smaller, the better). 'Madame Bovary' was one of the first books I read that I probably shouldn't have been reading at the time. I have vivid memories of the artsy cover, the fine print of the font, and reading the book in my parent's garage. At that age, I did not fully absorb all that I was reading, but I finished the book. Poe is one of my favorite writers, but 'The Gold-Bug' is not. But, I remember sitting cross-legged in front of an elementary school substitute teacher as she read it to us, and thinking to myself how 'advanced' this was for our class (compared to everything else our main teacher read). That was my first taste of Poe, so 'The Gold-Bug' makes me smile when I come across it.

Plumhill,

D'Aulaire's Greek Myths is a gorgeous book, isn't it?

Hmmm. I thought of "bookcase" in the broad sense of the word - just a stack of books - so mine are kind of "out there." Let me know if these aren't appropriate and I will make new ones in a bookcase. Also, I have arthritis in my fingers and can't print that small so I had to type out the titles and authors. Hope that's okay too. This was the most technically difficult atc cards I have ever worked on. Love seeing everyone's cards!!!

Well, today is the swap due date and I did not receive any AFA mail the past two days, just bills, ugh. So, I will wait to mail out as none of the groups are complete yet. Hoping that the storm in the eastern US will not create further delays.

Unfortunately, I just realized there was a mistake on one of the group one cards; the wrong list was used for the player- I have pmed the card's creator to let them know, as well as the moderators to find out whether the replacement card should be sent to me first, or directly to the player who was affected. I will let you know as soon as I know. Many apologies for not catching it earlier.

I'm going to hold off sending the group 1 returns until I find out what to do. Chronic Reader, your returns will be sent when all of the Group 2 cards arrive.

Returns are going out for all of Group 1 and Group 4- Mrubyjean, YonaWrites, and plumhill2001 tomorrow morning. KKPorcupine, I will send your group 4 when the group 3 cards arrive. I have had no mail today from AFA (:( just more bills) so I am hoping the last two packs will arrive tomorrow so that I can get the returns out for the remaining players.

Just an update...I am still waiting on one player, but cannot wait past Friday as that will be 2 weeks after the swap deadline. If the final sets for group 2 and 3 do not arrive by Friday, I will unfortunately have to send the card you made for LucyMc back to you. From there, personal trades will be arranged. Please all keep your fingers crossed that the wayward cards will arrive before then.

I am so upset that my cards haven't arrived. :( And so sorry too as this messes up the swap. :(

I will be messaging all my Group members to arrange to send new cards to them.

Please accept my sincerest apologies.

Apologies accepted, Lucy. Not your fault! These things do happen, but it is always so surprising and disappointing when they do. Personal trades are fine with me, no hurry, and I do want you to have the card I made for you.

Thank you so much for getting in touch, Lucy! Mail disasters happen. I sent the cards your group members made for you back to them, so you are able to do a personal trade instead.

I received my cards. Thanks especially to smallgirl for having such a nice theme. And when I messaged you, I forgot to mention that you placed a terrific selection of stamps on the envelope. And thanks for the bookmark as well.

Also, i-traders have been sent to ann_stebbing, xela7072, ChronicReader and dithespy. These are such nice cards.

Letting G-2 know I have not received my returns yet. This has been my the longest wait for cards from Canada so far. So I am getting a little anxious. As soon as they arrive, I'll post and give I trader.

I can see Texas not being there yet, as it took a long time for them to arrive from Texas, but Arizona is generally pretty fast...

smallgirl
02-05-2018, 08:09 PM
Actually, I just checked back the posts and it seems they actually arrived from Texas pretty fast, it was only because they got sent back that it seemed to take a long time. Well, perhaps some of the bad weather has something to do with it...keep us posted!
