Colour Wheel, playing and learning; Open Media - Due 10 Jan 2018

I was tidying (just a little) and came across some little cross stitch hearts I had made when I was doing some colour study, so I decided to cut them up and make them into ATCs. That's done, but I thought it would be nice to do a series of swaps using the Colour Wheel. I won't stipulate colours just explain what the term means for those who need it. If you don’t have a colour wheel, there are lots you can print off free. Here is a link to just one.

This first swap will use a Monochromatic colour scheme. Monochromatic colour schemes are derived from a single base colour and extended using its shades, tones and tints. Tints are achieved by adding white and shades and tones are achieved by adding grey or black. For this swap choose a primary (red, blue, yellow) or secondary (purple, green, orange) colour. You can use paint, pens, fabric, yarn, collage, whatever you like, but try and aim for a range of shades originating from your choice of base colour and only those. You may use black for outlining/drawing. Each card could feature a different base colour as long as the card is monochromatic. For this swap please do not use black as your base colour. That may feature in a later swap (Achromatic).

The cards:

- Each card must be ATC size, exactly 2.5" x 3.5" and on a sturdy base (cardstock, bristol, heavy watercolor paper, chipboard), and sent in its own plastic sleeve.

- Send work into which you put time, imagination and care, and would be happy to receive! I will trade effort for effort so make them your best effort.

- Each card must be original, no copies please.

- Label all cards with at least your real name, AFA username, date, location and name of the swap. A host card is not required but will be a very treasured addition to my growing collection.

When taping the cards together, just a little washi tape works great to keep them in place when mailing (don’t use ordinary masking tape – it’s a nightmare and ruins the plastic sleeves). Please post in this thread when you are sending your cards out. Some pictures of your efforts would be great inspiration for those still ‘lurking’.

US Players: please send a well concealed $1 in with your cards.
Other International Players: Please send $1 in your envelope if you have them. Failing that PM me for paypal details.
Include a large address label with your address neatly printed. I will provide envelopes.
Please PM me for my address when you are ready to send your cards.

Make sure you allow your cards enough mailing time to get to me, late cards will be returned to the artist, unswapped, at their expense. Lack of communication and lack of ATCs may result in Neutral iTrader. We all understand when life throws unexpected things at us, but please, please communicate.

Players - when you receive your cards for the swap, remember to leave an iTrader for the Host (me) and Rep Points for the people you received cards from – This is optional, but a nice way to say thank you. We all need a little encouragement.

Please write your username and Swap Name on the back of your envelopes.
I will leave iTrader for each player as I receive their cards.
We love eye candy, so do post photos of your cards to the thread for us all to admire.

This sounds interesting! But I must lurk until I catch up :spinny:

10-25-2017, 12:22 PM
Hmm, sounds promising, but I may lurk until I decide if I will have time...

10-25-2017, 04:56 PM
I thought you might like to see the culprits that started all this off.

I will do some more examples over the next day or so.

Welcome Lurkers. I hope you decide to join. Plenty of time yet but Christmas will be upon us before we know it.

10-25-2017, 05:07 PM
Great minds think alike. I was thinking of doing something similar. Since I spend much of my time teaching the color wheel to elementary students, I must join :)

10-25-2017, 09:27 PM
I am thinking that this would be fun! I am gonna lurk though because I am just starting back up again after my break and already joined 2 swaps...plenty of time though.

10-25-2017, 10:45 PM
lurking, also....

10-25-2017, 11:10 PM

10-25-2017, 11:29 PM
I would like to play!

10-26-2017, 06:44 AM
Welcome Prex79, esew123 and pouringdiva. Very happy to have you. Welcome also to our lurkers. I will try and produce some examples this afternoon (maybe that will push them over the edge).

10-26-2017, 07:21 AM
Sign me up. please. Ann. I love monochromatic cards!

10-26-2017, 01:05 PM
This is a cool idea - lurking!

I do want to point out that true primaries are actually cyan, magenta, and yellow (not blue, red, yellow), and secondaries are red, green, blue (but a really purple-y blue). (I've attached an image of a colour wheel with these primaries.) The blue/red/yellow primaries are actually an artifact from when people couldn't make pigments for magenta and cyan, but they've stuck around because of tradition. But if you've ever wondered why you couldn't mix a good purple with blue/red/yellow, it's because you didn't have the right primaries! Also mixing magenta and yellow to get red is a wild experience the first time you do it, I really recommend it!

Anyway, that's not to say you need to change your swap or anything, I just think it's important that anyone who does colour mixing knows about this. A lot of art programs/tutorials/etc use the "2 blues, 2 reds, 2 yellows" set to approximate primaries, which...worked fine when we didn't have actual primaries, but now that we do, I don't think it's the best approach.

Source: I took a course at university just on colour (and it was my favourite course!). If there's anything you want to know about colour mixing, feel free to ask me :)

Welcome dithespy and xela7072. Glad you could join us.

Thanks for the info zillah, that must have been a very interesting course. We will stick to the old fashioned source for this swap as it is what most people know and love. I think I only learned about cyan, magenta and yellow from print cartridges, so not that long ago.

My colour knowledge was picked up from a course on embroidery (hence the little stitched hearts), and I have an amazing book called "Color Works" by Deb Menz. I love it because it has a great colour wheel and some handy little black cut outs so you can check out all sorts of colour schemes. I often use it when I want a little pop if something and I'm not sure what :notworthy: I don't aim to get too technical for this swap though, you will be glad to hear.

10-27-2017, 07:10 AM
The red card was made just putting carmine red, black and white on my pallette. I don't normally use white with watercolours, it makes the paint opaque, I usually adjust my colour using water.

The flower is ultramarine blue with white and black.

Even if I wanted to do a collage, I think I would still do this colour swatch to make sure my reds weren't too orangey (is that even a word) or my blue straying toward blue green or cyan.

I have also attached a couple of pics that show the huge range of colours you can get using tints and tones of just one colour. Top section of the grid adds white, middle adds black, bottom adds grey.

10-27-2017, 10:57 AM
Very fun. The date's far enough out for me, and I've been reviewing color theory this past month and will be for the next couple of months. Ann, I also work in textiles and had done some stitching and color theory.

Please add me to this swap!

10-28-2017, 12:00 AM

11-13-2017, 08:40 AM
Welcome Dragon957. I am sure you will be able to think of something. I made a complete colour wheel, including tints and shades using different stitches in each segment of the wheel. I really ought to frame it some time. I love using embroidery threads as a source of colour inspiration. I have 10 boxes of them, sorted by colour. I love looking at them.

11-14-2017, 05:45 AM
AmySi Your fabulous cards have arrived. Thank you so much for the extra card, and for the forever stamp. Most appreciated.

11-15-2017, 10:01 PM
joining! working on cards.

Question. I am using copics, and blending blue and yellow for more shades of green since I only have two. In some places you can see tints of the blue and yellow. Is this OK or should I remake it? The card is still clearly green.

11-17-2017, 11:40 AM

The blue card is plain copics, the green is mostly blended copics, the purple is acrylic paint and the orange is colored pencil. I had fun playing with different mediums.

11-23-2017, 11:37 AM
Lovely card chronicreader. I like the different looks from all the media!

11-23-2017, 11:43 AM
Good morning!

Finished my cards and will be mailing them thie weekend.

Most of the backgrounds are inked and stamped either over gesso , stenciled or blended on card stock. I embossed over some things to give the ikks a littl bit of a different color. I tried to stick to one pure color blended with black, white or gray in most cases, but I had to guess on some of the embellishments.

For the orange card, I cut up postage stamps for the "leaves" on the trees, so those have a little black on them.

This was a great swap, I look forward to seeing what everyone does.

My images here and in the gallery.

11-24-2017, 06:40 PM
Dear Ann,

I am still horribly sick and will need to withdraw from this swap as I'm not getting much of anything done except trying to get rid of this sinus/cold thing. If things change, I'll rejoin.

Sorry folks I seem to have messed up on the list of players. I have added Peacein17 and Karenr, who I seem to have missed off the list. Please let me know if you spot any other errors. I hope it's right now. It's a bit of a job checking both the thread and PMs  I'll pay more attention next time.

Love them, karenr!

12-11-2017, 08:31 PM
So I have cards done, so officially not lurking any longer! This was a very challenging swap, especially with mixed media. Trying to find the right hues to stick with the monochromatic was an instigator of a need to clean and reorganize my studio again!!!:err: The purple and red are done with some print outs from the machines tests done in the mornings at the photo area in a pharmacy that I worked in years ago. I have held on to them for a LONG time knowing that I would use them some day! The blue one is mostly paint chips! I had alot of fun creating these!190587

12-12-2017, 06:04 AM
You did a great job TAD. I am planning to try and do a collage one. I did realise when I included collage, that they would not be easy. It's hard to find stuff that is just one colour, or within a small range. I will perhaps have a go tomorrow and post what I make, I still have one to make. Maybe paper painting or mosaic would be the way to go - hmmm!

12-12-2017, 09:24 PM
Sorry to say, I've got to withdraw. I chose the wrong season to try to do a swap... :(

12-13-2017, 06:05 AM
Seascape131 Your lovely cards have arrived. I love how you did the same design in 3 colourways. Thank you so much for the hostess card.

12-14-2017, 08:23 AM

Great cards, Donnacr. My favourite is the iguana.

12-17-2017, 05:50 PM
I love the finished result of the gecko but it is a metal stencil and it always takes a few failed attempts before I get just the gecko and not a smudged area around him as well. I have that stencil in 2 sizes - this one is the large version.

12-18-2017, 08:09 AM
It's a bumper mail day today - I have received cards from xela7072; mpittman469 and peacein17. Thank you all so much for the extra cards and other bits and pieces.

Lovely cards Donnacr.

Just over 3 weeks to go, it might be advisable to get those cards in the mail soon, to allow for the Christmas mail volumes.

These will go out this afternoon:

There are some really great cards here, and I've enjoyed lurking, but I don't think I'm going to have time to make some myself - I knew it would be busy these few weeks around Christmas, but it's been even more than I expected. Great idea, though - I might try to jump into some of the later rounds of this series...

What happened to all that spare time I sent you? By the way, the other day I went to your katesquilting blog and spent about 2 hours lost in your lovely quilts. I was in awe! I need to stop signing up for stuff and get my one quilt out and finish it.

I have to withdraw. Nerve and bone issues are causing me problems using my dominate arm. Surgery to be scheduled in Jan. Looking forward to seeing all that people post.

I think it must have got lost in the post, Maggie. Shall we try again in the new year, lol?

Thanks for your kind words on my quilts - that's another thing I don't really have much time for at the moment - I have a couple of baby quilts I really need to quilt up during the holidays, though, so maybe I'll get to something sooner or later!

Mail Call ThouArtDelyrias your lovely cards have arrived. Thank you for the extra card. I appear to have missed you off the list, so I have added you now. I don't think you're on twice :)

Not long to go now. If your cards have not been mailed yet, I would get them out PDQ, it sometimes takes two weeks for mail to hit me from the US.

These are fantastic prex. I had a hard time really producing true monochromatic, but these are like a lesson in the theme. Well executed!

12-31-2017, 11:20 AM
They certainly are fabulous Prex. I have to say I've tried both, watercolours and collage. Watercolours is definitely easier as you just use only one colour adding more water and layers as necessary.

Just found this monochromatic tutorial on YouTube!

01-01-2018, 02:25 PM

I am waiting to find out if Prex79 has sent cards, as that is the last set I am waiting for before I can swap them out - :jiggy:

01-10-2018, 09:20 AM
Wow! What a fabulous sight to see all those beautiful monochrome cards laid out. I have swapped them out, with the help of my friend dithespy, so I hope we've not made any errors and that you all got a good mix of colours. There were a lot of cards and I had so many wonderful host cards. Thank you all so much.

Unfortunately Prex79s cards are still on their way, but fear not Prex, I have a nice little envy for you if/when they arrive. The cards will be in the post on my way out this evening.

When you receive your cards please make a note in the thread, so that I know they've arrived safely. Don't forget to leave an iTrader for your host (me) and Rep (You Rock) points for your artists. We all like to be appreciated.

Thank you all so much for making this my biggest swap to date. I hope you will play some more with your Colour Theory.
