TSMarie
11-13-2017, 02:21 AM
Swap Due Date – Friday, January 12, 2018
Signup/withdraw Date – None; please just communicate
Number of Cards - 3 for 3
Number of Participants – 30 (my third swap!)
Media – Open media (excluding exclusively digital)
Theme – Tarot-inspired

Tarot cards reflect a fascinating history of the occult, mythology, symbolism, and games. The ancient tarot deck has evolved into the modern 78-card deck with 22 major arcana cards and 56 minor arcana cards. For this swap, participants will create their own tarot or tarot-inspired cards!

Card Guidelines:
1. Each card must be the standard ATC size of 2.5 x 3.5 inches.
2. Each card must be original and unique. Please don’t send in cards that you’ve swapped/traded in the past or plan on replicating for swapping/trading in the future.
3. Embellishments are OK as long as they are relatively flat and lightweight.
4. Please send in only work that you have put thought, time, and effort into. Make sure that you are swapping a card you would be happy to receive.
5. Please make sure that cards have a sturdy background and earn the name “card.”
6. Each card must be in an individual plastic sleeve (please no connecting photo album sleeves without also including individual sleeves).
7. Each card should be labeled with the swap name, your username, your real name, date of creation, and your location.

Mailing Guidelines:
1. Please mail cards in a business sized envelope, spreading the cards over the space of the envelope.
2. Please protect your cards from damage in the mail by including a cardstock background or folder, or by placing individual cards within sturdy sleeve protectors.
3. If you tape your cards onto a sturdy background when mailing, please use an easy-release tape such as painter’s tape or washi tape. I don’t want anyone’s beautiful artwork to be damaged by tape.
4. Please include a self-addressed, stamped envelope for your return cards.
5. If you are mailing from the U.S., one Forever stamp should cover the cost of returns.
6. If you are mailing internationally, please provide one of the following for your returns:
a. One U.S. Forever stamp.
b. One well-concealed $1 bill.
c. $1 payment via PayPal.

*When you are ready to mail your cards, please just private message me for my address.
*iTraders will be given when cards are received by me.
*Please note that cards must be received by the due date. No cards and no communication will result in neutral iTrader. You may withdraw any time before the due date.
*A host card would be greatly appreciated and loved, but is never required.
*Please make sure to leave an iTrader for your host (me) and You Rocks! for the artists that created your return cards when you receive them.

A few examples to get you started. (Many thanks to BluSkyHare for permission to share her creation, The Sun.)

I love the Aquarian deck, but don't own one myself. I have several other decks, though. The first deck I purchased was Legend: the Arthurian Tarot, which I chose for the fantastic artwork and because of my love for the tales of Arthur.

lurking for now. This could be really fun, lots of cool options. I'm really only familiar with one type of tarot deck that was popular in the 80s and it is cool to see all the other designs out there.

Love that Arthurian styled deck, TSMarie! I have some ideas of what to make, but still thinking...Actually this would make a great year-long challenge, wouldn't it? I wonder if it's been done.

Tarot cards used to be a semi frequent swap theme as I recall. I went back and briefly searched the swap archive. It looks like Phoenix started a tarot swap that went a few times. That was back in 2012. I've not seen a tarot swap in awhile.

Welcome to the lurker's couch, pancake machine! Would love to have you join us!

I didn't realize the tarot theme was frequent in the past. I joined the site about a year and a half ago and was surprised that the theme hadn't come up in any of that time, so I thought I'd give it a go! I'll have to search the archives to see all the wonderful cards folks made!

BluSkyHare, it certainly would be a great year-long challenge! :)

I do not have a Rider deck, although one of the main decks. I like the images but don't like all the yellow (not my fav color). I only have the Aquarian, although I do like the Visconti deck.
There is a novel by John Crowley titled Little, Big, in which a deck of tarot features prominently. But that deck has some strange, different cards, such as "the Fisherman" and "the Vista" and "the Cousin". Has anyone read this book?

I have not read Little, Big but it sounds interesting! I will definitely have to look it up! I actually just finished Murder on Waverly Place, which is part of the Gaslight Mystery series. The tarot cards don't make an appearance, but the murder does take place during a seance. Interest in the occult really surged in the late 1800s (when the book takes place), and it was an interesting read. :)

I don't know how many Rider Waite decks I've worn out lol! Mary Greer, the tarot scholar lives in my area (Nevada County CA), but long before we moved here I heard her a few times lecture in the bay area. She wrote a book about the women of the Golden Dawn. For those of you who didn't know, the Golden Dawn was the European spiritual society that sponsored the competition for the first "new" tarot deck. The deck Waite directed and Pamela Coleman Smith painted won and that was the first of the new decks. Pamela's name was included on the first decks but was later bumped when the name was changed to Rider Waite. So it went for so many female artists (sigh). Mary Greer discovered that, although the men took all the credit (Arthur Waite included) it was actually the women who channeled the information for them. Mary has written some great "how to" books on the tarot as well.

Really interesting Lindalee

TSMarie
11-27-2017, 11:32 PM
That is indeed interesting! I grew up knowing the deck as the Rider-Waite, but noticed when researching it that many referred to it as the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, which I thought was more appropriate! I am a bit embarassed to admit that despite my interest in the tarot, and owning several decks, I cannot do a reading without using a book for assistance. I am absolutely fascinated by those who can interpret a spread without the assistance of a book or cheat-sheet of some kind.

lindalee, how did you learn and become proficient?

ann_stebbing
11-29-2017, 10:20 AM
I've just been researching this and see that Minor arcana cards are based on normal playing cards. Could we alter a playing card showing just the number and suit?

TSMarie

I've just been researching this and see that Minor arcana cards are based on normal playing cards. Could we alter a playing card showing just the number and suit?

That's an excellent question, ann_stebbing! The tarot are indeed tied to historic playing cards. I don't collect Altered Playing Cards; however, I would still trade an APC because I just consider the exposed card elements (number/suit) as being part of the card's composition, rather than specifically representing a playing card (if that makes sense). Having said that, I know many folks on the site don't trade APCs because they don't "collect" APCs.

To get back to your question... Considering the tarot's connection to playing cards, and since this is a tarot-inspired swap, I would say go for it! Maybe just include other elements that are also tarot-inspired, rather than using the number/suit as the only tarot connection.

If any of the swap players specifically do NOT want to receive a card that would also technically qualify as an APC, then please message me and I will certainly respect that request.

ann_stebbing
12-01-2017, 07:24 AM
Thanks for that. I absolutely was going for the Tarot theme. If I use one it will only by the number and suit I would leave showing. There are some fabulous examples of Tarot Art to choose from. Even though it's not something I would dabble in, I have seen one or two lovely packs I might buy simply for art inspiration. I do sort of collect playing cards (not seriously). It's one of the things I often pick up on my travels as some of them contain lots of lovely pictures of the region/country.

BluSkyHare
12-01-2017, 09:20 AM
ann_stebbing, I collect playing cards, too--ever since I was a kid. I don't know why I don't collect tarot cards...maybe because they are more expensive?

Maybe we could do something next summer!? I'll tentatively plan for that, unless someone else hosts a tarot-inspired swap before then. I don't want to dominate the tarot theme. :)

I don't usually make such "similar" cards, but it seemed appropriate for this swap. A set :)191297

My cards got in the mail today. Sorry for the delay but we had crazy weather in Florida and no post office in my town :)

Your cards are lovely, and I don't think they're similar at all! Each is unique!

Hello madamerouleau, you are certainly welcome to join! Please note, however, that the swap due date is this Friday, so cards would need to be mailed ASAP. I am an on-time hostess. If you think you can make it, I'd love to have you!! Your first card is beautiful! :)

Thanks! I don't think I could mail until Wednesday or Thursday, though, so they wouldn't be there by Friday. :-( Maybe next time? I love this theme.

Hi Jenn,
I'love work on that NJ card for you. It is my home state.

I've had two people offer up NJ, but I definitely would like to include a NJ card from a native if you want to make one. No pressure though. I do have duplicates on some states so that's not a concern. It would be kind of you to contribute to the 50 States Collection :)

Sounds good. Hold onto your first card, since I'd like to repeat the tarot swap sometime this summer, unless someone else beats me to it! :)

So glad cards are starting to land! They seem to be a little slower than normal. Today's mail will be the 5th business day, so hopefully most should arrive in the U.S. by today! :)

Hello Folks, Everyone should have their cards by now and I will be closing this swap in a couple of days. If you have not yet done so, please make sure you leave You Rocks! for the artists that created your cards, as well as an iTrader for me to let me know that you have recieved your returns. Thanks so much for playing. You all were wonderful! :)
