I'll be visiting at the end of July. I have an American Assoc of Clinical Chemistry conference that I will be attending and was hoping to find a way to slip off for some art shopping or sight seeing. :) Some of my days and evenings are booked but when I have free time, what should I NOT miss? Last time I was in DC was 1978...I think we still have the same senate and congressman so I think I'll skip them... LOL

My dates are Mon Jul 28-Wed Jul 30. I'm booked for Weds but I expect to have free time Mon and Tues. after my seminars.

Ideas?

Hi Teri-

I work in DC and live in NoVA.....
If you have a car...drive out to Savage Mill in Savage, MD (right next to laurel) and visit the Queen's Ink. Love the store-love the ladies who run it-you may need an extra suitcase to bring home all the goodies you'll "discover" there

My favorite museums (and the places where I continually get inspiration) are the Hirschorn and the American Indian Museum. bonus: American Indian Museum has the BEST cafeteria on the mall-check it out if you're looking for something "different"

if you like to window shop and meander, take the Yellow or Blue line Metro to the King St station and head towards the water. Great place to kill an afternoon or evening just walking and shopping

Hope this helps.

Oh drat!
I have a wedding to attend and a birthday party to plan right around those dates.
I would love to come see you as I will be up in Maryland not far from DC...sigh maybe another time.

The American Indian Museum is cool, so is The Spy Museum.
The Smithsonian and The National Art Gallery are also worth seeing!

Thanks for the tips! I do like the idea of the Indian Museum. Of course the Smithsonian (at least some of it) will be on the list. I won't have a car so I will have to depend on taxi and/or bus. I am still in limbo on when I will have free time. We have plans for dinner one afternoon and my co-workers are wanting to go to the ball game to see the minor league play.

I live in college park I'm about 15minutes by metro from DC... Let me know! I love a day trip to the smithsonian! Schaefme... my MIL works in Savage so thats kinda funny!
If you are staying in DC get a metro pass its so easy to get to the National mall and all the other DC sites that way! hit the American Indian Museum Definitely it is great fun! I was at the zoo a few days ago and that is fun since they redid it but more of a kid thing... Georgetown is fun to walk around and people watch and shop... you can find really cool fun little shops... Takoma park is on the metro but on the maryland side and is a kinda funky little hippie town lots of thrift stores and funky stores and stuff... Chinatown is where a majority of the art galleries are and they are fun to poke around in too! I also highly recommend the national art gallery and any of the smithsonian museums, they really are a fun way to spend the day! Dupont Circle and Adams Morgan are places I like to go to hang out and eat... It's like a food paradise out there!!

I haven't been in a while but the Smithsonian is a place I never miss when in the area...there are like 4 or more of them...but I always go to the one with like the "first ladies" clothes and archie bunker's chair etc. LOL

not sure how much time you'll have and how much time it would take...BUT...
I highly recommend a trip to Asaeteaque(spelling) to see the wild horses ( who aren't so wild...they'll actually come to you looking for food. but it is still neat!

Man, I only have 3 days ladies! Most of the daytime will be in seminars and the evenings will be mine, but I will have to try to spend one or two evenings with my bosses. Yeah, I said bosses, plural! My boss, her boss, the system director and our system pathologist...3 of them are fun, the pathologist has really dry humor but I think he will show another side when we are away from work. I'm really getting excited. The Smithsonian will be a definate, anything else will be bonus. I am hoping to make it to a VIP dinner at Mt. Vernon. I so want to be served a meal in the home with so much history.

I appreciate all the input! I will contact you, ShesSoCrafty, when it gets closer to the time I go and I find out what our final schedule is going to be. I would love to meet you!
