where did you get vintage scrabble tiles from?

adifferentstory
05-31-2008, 04:33 AM
My friend Mar sent them to me. It's near impossible to get wooden scrabble tiles here in the UK. Occasionally a set will pop up on ebay but they are also very expensive here. I think ebayers have learn't how collectable they are.

adifferentstory
05-31-2008, 04:37 AM
You couil make an imitation scrabble tile by putting 3 layers of chipboard together, i'd recommend diamond glaze for gluing. The size is 18mm width x 20mm length with slightly rounded corners. You can sand the edges to make sure they are flus and also sand to get the rounded corners. The thickness you want is approx 5mm. You colould then paint and decorate them. They would need sealing after the painting with diamond glaze, to make sure they are strong enough.

They are cute little charms. How did you do those Anita?

I've had to buy another solder iron as I managed to bed the tip on ine, plus I ran out of solder LOL Can't finish off the ones i've done so far. I also won on ebay a bid for some mini vintage bone dominoes so may try something out with those when the arrive.

AnitaM

Here you go -

Ingredients
Clear shrink plastic
Images from magazines/clipart/hand drawn anything goes so long as it fits in your shrunken plastic.

1. Cut x2 clear shrink plastic 4cmx4cm - these shrunk down to 1.5cmx1.5cm.

2. Punch hole - remember to punch the hole so that when it has shrunk down your wire can easily go through it (I would do a practice piece first).

3. Shrink down the plastic - place a wooden block on top to flatten the plastic.

4. Apply some diamond glaze/ dimensional magic to the shrink plastic.

5. Place glue side down onto image of your choice - my images were from magazines/clipart so I stuck the plastic down first and then trimmed of the edges (hope that bit makes sense). Do this to both your plastic pieces.

6. Once your images are glued and trimmed apply some more glue and stick the 2 pieces together making sure that the holes are lined up.

7. Let these dry.

8. I finished the edges with marker pens - you can use anything which isn't going to rub off.

9. Finally add your jump ring and hey presto charms made.

06-02-2008, 04:28 PM
Oh! that's neat having the image on both sides. Now that is getting me thinking to change my scrabble time ones LOL I don't have clear shrink plastic but I must have bought a job lot of the frosted one LOL Wonder if it will work with that. May try it. Not for this swp but sometime later.

AnitaM
06-02-2008, 04:32 PM
Won't work with the frosted ones - you won't be able to see the image through the shrink plastic. Would you like me to send you some clear?

I'll send you some tomorrow. Thanks for the offer of swapping but I have just too much stuff and I have a whole pack of frosted not even opened yet - you know how it is - you put it to one side then can't find it when you want to use it so what do you do - go and buy some more.

7301 Ok I've been playing again. These are done with shrink plastic with acrylic paint applied to the botton 2 and Stuart Gill paints to the top 3. I applied the paints before shrinking. The backs are coated with fimo shellac as its water proof.

Well i've tried soldering jump rings. Solder burns and it hurtt and it sticks to you keyboard keys but did I manage to solder a jump ring LOL I've ordered some split jump rings instead. got to be easier LOL

AnitaM
06-24-2008, 03:54 PM
Why don't you make your jump rings from heavier wire that way there is no need to solder them and they should fit together nicely.

adifferentstory
06-24-2008, 03:59 PM
Me....Make jump rings. Hahahaha. I might have some heavy wire. I could give it a go. I like the dainty thin ones though but the solder hates me LOL

AnitaM
06-24-2008, 04:20 PM
I have used 1mm thickness wire. Its not too thick but it strong enough that it doesn't pull apart. I found that using flush cutters worked the best and when cutting I always have the flat side of the cutter against the previous cut that way the angles of the 2 cuts are always the opposite (does that make sense?)

adifferentstory
06-24-2008, 04:27 PM
I have some of that wire. What mm diam do you make them? I only have a pair of side cutters will they work? I do know what you mean.

AnitaM
06-24-2008, 04:48 PM
Yes side cutters will work too. I have a wire winder but a knitting needle will work just as well. The size depends on what I am using them for. I recently made a necklace where I made the actual bead component (attached 3-4 beads to make one bead if that makes sense I have a picture of the necklace on webshots link in my signature) and for that I made the rings approx 4mm. The largest I have made are 7mm which are what I used to attach the beads when I made the keyrings (these are in my gallery here).

adifferentstory
06-24-2008, 05:05 PM
You've made some beautiful jewellery Anita. I have a tutorial for it somewhere on my website LOL You make a tight coil and cut them off from that. I'll give it a go soon. I've had another bleed in m eye and my eyes are very blurry right now so best not try yet LOL

AnitaM
06-25-2008, 03:48 AM
Ohh do take care with your eye. Yes if you wind the wire round into a coil and then cut them with the cutters. Remember to always have your cutters facing the same way every time - I have mine so that the flat side is flush to the last cut.

here is a link i found on the web incase you can't find yours - also her instructions are more clearer than mine and I forgot about making both sides the same as she has explained - better than me but it was late when I posted.

AnitaM
06-26-2008, 11:13 AM
The last pendant has been done with alcohol ink and then rubber stamped with stazon after sealing it first. I shrunk the plastic first and then applied the ink. How did you do yours?

adifferentstory
06-26-2008, 11:22 AM
They sound interesting.

Lovely charms Anita.

I've heard that any colour applied to shrink plastic first (recommended for colouring in) is intensified when the plastic shrinks.

LavenderLizard
06-26-2008, 12:25 PM
Great charms, Anita! I've never tried adding the ink after shrinking. Might have to give that a go!

AnitaM
06-26-2008, 04:36 PM
If you colour them in before shrinking colour them in lightly and the colour will intensify (like the poppy pendant in my gallery). The one in the thread here was coloured in after shrinking.

katilady
06-26-2008, 08:17 PM
Please someone, anyone....how to make shrink plastic not curl? I am a newbie with this medium!

adifferentstory
06-27-2008, 02:58 AM
It will always curl kati but will flatten out when it's fully shrunk. I use a kebab stick to hold it in place while shrinking and when it shrinks no more and almost completely flat but still warm I use the flat side of a rubber stamp to flatten it completely.

AnitaM
06-27-2008, 04:35 AM
Yep as ADS said above use a wooden sweker. If you find it curls and gets stuck you can prise if open (I use fingers but doing the ouch ouch at the same time) and rehit using the skewer to hold the curled bits apart or leave it till it cools and then unstick it by pulling.

The other thing I do especially if the pieces are big is to keep turning/flipping the piece over so that you shrink from both sides (you will see raised bits where its not quite shrunk.

This is going off subject but still on shrink plastic - if you have rough/sharp edges use an emery board to file them smooth and to make your edges rounded.

adifferentstory
06-27-2008, 05:05 AM
The rounding of the edges is a great idea Anita.

I've just bought some more beads off ebay and some mobile phone straps and more thonging for my dominoes and some books for collaging and..... OK i'd better stop buying now and start to sell things to pay for it LOL

Donna is the one to ask about aloholink and shrink plastic. She has sent some lovely ones in for the swap.

I am going to try it out over the next couple of days. I want to make a charm bracelet so may use the finished results on that (if it works out) LOL

AnitaM
07-04-2008, 03:29 AM
Shrink your plastic first and then use the alcolhol inks otherwise they will come out really dark and you could loose the lovely pattern that is created- try both ways before shrinking and after shrinking and see which you like the best.

Argh! Tried shrink plastic 4 different times, managing to get a piece in my eye once (don't even ask, lol) so I am officially giving up!

Not on the swap though! Just the shrink plastic. I have moved on to scrabble tiles and have 13 drying as I type (12 to swap and 1 for our ever so lovely host). Once dry I will attach hanging thingies and send them off to jolly England!

Anita, you are the queen of shrink plastic and I just don't know how you do it, sigh. Maybe I need a private tutoring session, lol!

Oooooh. I will have to give that a look when I get home from work. I have 4 sheets of white and 7 of clear so I don't want to give up entirely, but I didn't think I would get a technique perfected in time for this swap. Especially since I have to allow for extra shipping time.

Hey Lynne--a quick question:
I saw this just now "Please fill out and attach a customs label. Marking as a gift and a value of under £7 (US$14), we get charged tax on amounts over this from outside the European Union." I often mark customs label as 'other' then note it's art and give it a big fat 0 on what it's worth. Is this OK too? Or does something evil and sinister happen when I do that? I want to make sure these arrive safely!

LavenderLizard
07-07-2008, 11:37 AM
If you have trouble getting good stamped images on plastic, don't give up! You can always heat it and then stamp it immediately after it comes out of the oven to get an impressed image instead. You can then use rub-ons to highlight the raised area and seal with acrylic sealer. Just another possible technique to try! I always ruin 2 attempts before I get one I like anyway...

I think the post goblins chew it up and spit it out LOL

If something is marked with a 0 value if it gets opened and you get someone who sticks to the rules and regulations they will put an estimate on how much it is worth. If it is over the allowed limits I will be asked to pay the excess by card before they will send it out. We get charged for the privaledge of them posting it to us too. It can come by courier and they charge around $16 for that. It's best to put a value of around $5 or $10. Saying all this none of my things have been stopped by customs and I have ordered a few items from the US but alwas under our limit. We can however order whatever we like without being charged on top from anywhere in Europe. For things from the US and the ROW the duty and VAT combined works out about 40% of the value before postage.

Those look gorgeous CD.

I've mastered shrink plastic LOL I used my mini oven instead and it works that way. I've made a bracelet with recrangular tiles and linked together with jump rings. I used alcohol inks on that. I'm just finishing off a pendant which is graduating squares and glued on in layers at different angles. I used brilliance ink pads to do that.

O'v got the shrinkles shrink plastic and just realised it doesn't shrink evenly. I was making square tiles and they ended up rectangular. Has anyone else had that happen? or am I doing something wrong?

REQUEST TO SWAP GROUP: Could the person who gets my unicorn charm (one of the little red rectangular ones) please P.M. me when they have received it?

The reason being, this is my personal favourite, and I would like to know who gets it--I hope they love it as much as I do!

This charm has a nice effect, when you tilt it you see either the writing on it, or the unicorn, it changes back and forth. It's like those postcards that you can tilt to make the picture on them 'move'. I discovered this technique accidentally.

Two things:

a) yes, I will post a technique description for the tilt/holographic effect (don't know what to call it...) ... later in the day though. Sorry I've been absent so much. Tasks, tasks. :dull:

b) another thing about one of my charms: the dangle charm with the two glittery green beads at the top has a silver-coloured miniature frame hanging from its bottom.

The top of this frame can be opened (gently, please!) and the two-sided picture between the two small rectangular acrylic panes can be removed and changed.

In a word...it's customizable! Whoever gets it: have fun!

Later, dudettes...

Here goes:

Tiles that change their look when tilted - mini tutorial

1. Take your nicely cut-out tile of Stampbord (http://stampbord.com). --> To cut this material into smaller tiles, use a handsaw instead of an electrical one--saw carefully! The white surface doesn't get marred too much that way.

Hint: matbord/thick cardbord can be substituted for Stampbord--the important thing is to use a sturdy surface.

2. Use the direct-to-surface technique to tint the tile in the colour of choice, with a dye ink pad, e.g. Nick Bantock. Hit it with the heat gun for a few seconds. Let cool.

3. Stamp a background image using dye ink in a dark shade, like black, grey or prussian blue. (You can also use pigment ink in a dark metallic shade at this step... this will give a slightly different look).

4. Stamp another image in pigment ink on top of that, using a bright metallic colour like white pearl, bright gold, silver tones etc.

Hit your tile with the heat gun again. Let cool.

5. Cover entire tile surface in Perfect Medium (or any other embossing ink).

6. Cover in UTEE (or other coarse embossing powder). Melt UTEE with heat gun. Let tile cool.

7. Repeat steps 5 through 6 until you get a smooth glossy surface, as on a real porcelain tile. You can use a gold pigment ink pad under the second-to-last layer of UTEE to create a kind of aged look.

8. And presto! You're finished.

Additionally, you can decorate or paint the edges of these lovely faux tiles, and to prevent cracking of the surface--which will occur after two years or so!--just seal them with Diamond glaze or any other sealant of your choice.

HINTS:

I think this effect would also work on paper, to a degree, but the thick UTEE layers are what makes the images "jump" at you when you tilt the tile.

And: be careful not to let your stamps slip on the Stampbord, it's very slick.

HAVE FUN! :D

katilady
08-03-2008, 06:44 PM
Whoa! That's so cool. Did you make that technique up?

avidstampcarver
08-03-2008, 07:46 PM
Making faux tiles out of cardboard and UTEE was a hint that came with the Perfect Medium pad, I think... then I used Stampbord instead because I wanted my tiles to be sturdier, so they'd work as charms.

The "tilt technique" itself I discovered accidentally. :cute:
