Several months ago, I hosted a Design a Pony Swap at IllustratedATCs.com My schedule now allows me to host it here :)

I am sure most of you have heard of the Cows on Parade or Trail of Painted Ponies? They are figurines you can buy from places like Hallmark. Here is their site: http://www.trailofpaintedponies.com

I got their book for Christmas (I can’t afford the figurines and have no room for them … but the artwork is really stunning!)

So here is a chance for you guys to create your own Painted Pony! We all have themes that are special and mean something to us… Frieda Kahlo, Goth, Lenore, Native Indian Art, Trees, Crows etc…

Below is attached a line drawing of a pony (drawn by me, of course) that you will alter to create your designs.

You must read the following:

When printing out the pony: Trace over the line art for a new card onto cardstock (no light weight printer paper): we don’t want to see any pixilated computer print outs, because they don’t look nice! If you do not have a light box, use a window OR a television screen :)

It is okay to:

* ‘Modify’ parts of the pony (like create a fish tail where the back legs are if you like mermaids/seahorses.)
* Create several cards using the same design (But they must be original art, NOT photocopies!)
* Use a variety of media to create your cards

Requirements and Specs:

IMPORTANT: Stamps are no longer 41 cents! They are now 42! Please reflect this in the postage you use on your SASE and send. Thank you! :D

Cards Due: In My Hands July 25th

Cards: 3 for 3 (if you want to send in 6 for 6 you MUST ask me for approval via PM, if you do not ask approval, I have the right to only swap out 3 of your 6 if I see fit and return the remainder to you.) In addition, if your cards exhibit extreme lack of effort or poor craftsmanship, and there are no other cards with witch to swap them out of equal creation, I will return them to you using the SASE provided! Send what you would like to receive!

Please read this to ensure your trading success! http://www.atcsforall.com/forum/showthread.php?p=117623#post117623

--Cards are welcome in ANY medium! Fabric, papers, paints, go for it!
(No digital ONLY or copies). Each card needs unique hand-added-additions.

--Limit embellishments to THIN only, please.
Nothing bulky or heavy or your cards will be returned to you at your own expense.

--Put your USERNAME on the backs of your cards
(to make sure the other artist's know whose work they received and so I don't give you your OWN cards back!)

--Please put clear plastic sleeves on your cards!

--Media: Open media, NO Photocopies of original work!

-- Create some kind of decorative/relavant background on the card that complements your pony!

--US players Send a SASE (Self Addressed, STAMPED envelope) please, with 42 cents on the envie, please. I will put my return address label on your return envelope.

--ALSO, each U.S. participant is requested to send one Loose stamp (42 cents or more) to help cover international returns. This is a swap method I employ, in order not to limit international players.

--International participants, send a self-addressed envelope (or self-stick label) and I will cover postage. An extra Pony ATC in nice, but not required. PLEASE send US postage instead if you have it!

--Put your USERNAME on your return envelope please! (on the back flap is perfect!) Please send a SASE With my Address written in the Upper Left Corner!!

Wow! You guys are all awesome! I've added everyone!

shoreart: OMG! That is so cool! How lucky to see them in person! Your DH had a point, but owning one would have been really cool!

HHC: Do come back if you can!

05-25-2008, 09:12 PM
Please sign me up, sounds like fun!

05-25-2008, 09:15 PM
Please sign me up, it sounds like fun!

05-25-2008, 09:50 PM
Oh, this looks very cool! I've seen the "life-size" version of something like this recently. You know how some cities raise funds by having artists decorate big fiberglass statues? In Gainesville, FL, "home of the Gators," near where I live, they decorated gators (they're pretty awful), but about 40 minutes south is Ocala, which is known for its horse farms. The artists decorated these beautiful life-size horses and they turned out so fab! This is like a miniature version of that - uh, only flat. LOL! Please sign me up; I'm excited about making my own!

05-25-2008, 09:56 PM
What a wonderful swap! May I please join in?

05-25-2008, 11:17 PM
Welcomw Ibus, thecoffeeshopgirl, euphoria and CityKitten!

I saw the lifesized cows along the roads in Ft Wayne, IN and they were awesome. If I could draw, I'd join. But alas, I cannot.

05-26-2008, 12:59 PM
I saw the lifesized cows along the roads in Ft Wayne, IN and they were awesome. If I could draw, I'd join. But alas, I cannot.

But you don't have to be able to draw! The horse is already drawn, all you have to do is trace over it and use that to put on your paper, or even easier print it, cut it out and use it as a template to trace round. Then let your imagination run wild decorating it.

05-26-2008, 01:11 PM
Yep, I am planning to do some mixed media/collaged madness, cause this girl can't draw either!

05-26-2008, 01:20 PM
OKAY! I can't say no, it's just too great an idea. Count me in!

05-26-2008, 02:09 PM

Just for fun! In 2005 there was a Horse Parade in Belgium (like Art on Cows) ... I searched a bit for pictures ... http://community.webshots.com/album/378556144axrllW?start=0 .

05-29-2008, 04:38 PM
In Norfolk Virginia, they have painted Mermaids.

05-29-2008, 07:01 PM
Following on with the theme... In Australia many country towns engage in
"Moooving Art" Painted Cows... Here are a few examples I found to show...

MMMM some good ideas !!

05-29-2008, 08:07 PM
The Australian cows are quite beautiful as are the Painted Ponies and the Painted Whales in Conn. I am embarrassed to admit that the State of Rhode Island is home to ...The Painted Mr Potato Head statues:confused:. Yes, since the main Hasbro factory that makes the Mr Potato Head toy is located here, we have been subjected to these hideous giant blob-like creatures for years. You really have to see them to believe them. Here is a link: http://members.tripod.com/~MattyAG/Potato1.html

05-29-2008, 10:06 PM
Wendy, that is a beautiful pony:D

05-30-2008, 12:52 AM

This is really a great thread ... with the beautiful ponies that are showed and the nice links!

Aaah ... poor dina54 ...

05-30-2008, 06:00 AM
Thanks for the sympathy, LOL. Great pony Wendy :D

05-30-2008, 10:13 AM
Dina--Those heads are a bit horrid... :D What are those people thinking? :D In my hometown they recently spent mega bucks on this "fountain" only it's not really a fountain... it's more like a high-pressured stream of water that shoots straight up. No decorative concrete or anything!

05-30-2008, 04:35 PM
Wow! I almost missed it...May I please join.

05-30-2008, 06:25 PM
DADAology: The swap is full :( Do you want me to put you on a waiting list? People usually drop out :)

06-01-2008, 08:43 PM

06-01-2008, 09:03 PM
That looks super cool! Yeah nowzem, that kind of alteration is fine :D

06-02-2008, 08:03 AM

Anyway, Thanks to everyone, I really like the many looks of the ponies being shown here..way to go PEOPLE!!! :)

06-02-2008, 12:08 PM
KarenM: you can give people 'rep points' by clicking on the "you rock!" button below each post :D

06-02-2008, 12:20 PM
do you have a waiting list on this one?

06-02-2008, 12:59 PM
I already asked, RK! LOLOL I'm *so* enjoying all the eyecandy here!!

06-02-2008, 01:01 PM
Yes! I have a waiting list :) I should add it to the main post though... :)

06-02-2008, 02:15 PM
Good idea, EQ! Or else we'll have to keep an eye on RK. NO cuts, Mary!!!!

06-02-2008, 02:21 PM
Hmm....four on the waiting list, eh?

You know, EQ, 45 is such an arbitrary number....there's something so nice and full and even about 50...and with four on the waiting list and yourself....that'd 'd be 50...

*eying gris-gris bag* Or folks might withdraw, of course. :)

06-02-2008, 03:02 PM
Wait! Wasn't I first on the waiting list? Didn't I mention this to you months ago?

Jean, move over, I'm SURE I was ahead of you.

06-02-2008, 03:57 PM
You SO were NOT, RK! :skeptical: I was ahead of you....

06-02-2008, 04:00 PM
I better change my mood. I see Jean's not gonna be an easy pushover. LOL

06-02-2008, 04:34 PM
Hey, GRANDMA! You just - as we say back home - simmer down and we'll get along juuuuuust fine! ;)

06-02-2008, 04:37 PM
I better change my mood. I see Jean's not gonna be an easy pushover. LOL

*checking backside in mirror* Hmm...she's got a point.

06-02-2008, 08:01 PM
Have I told you guys today that I love you? HAHA. :jiggy:

I got cards from Sweetest sin :) Thanks for the extra!

06-02-2008, 09:00 PM
Oooooo...I came to post JUST in time...as Jean and RK are about to THROW DOWN!

This is "Chucked Pony", styled after an artist whose first name is Chuck. This technique took FOREVER...in fact, I'm probably still working on it in my sleep.

06-02-2008, 09:02 PM
This is Equestrian Graffiti...she's purdy, but tough.

06-02-2008, 09:06 PM
This last pony was found in the back of a storage closet of an old and rundown performance theatre. She's missing her mane and tail, but her puppetmaster is still going to put her in the show.

06-02-2008, 09:06 PM
I am loving your cards Ms. Nutty!

06-02-2008, 09:15 PM
*dancing around the ring* C'mon, Mary, c'mon! I'm ready for you! Put your prismas up!

06-02-2008, 09:30 PM
Wow, I'd better get a move on, already seen one of my ideas used! Love the horses, they're brilliant!

06-02-2008, 09:40 PM
Wow, I'd better get a move on, already seen one of my ideas used!

Hope it wasn't the "painting in squares" idea. If so, be glad you'll get hours back in your life. Yikes-ers!

06-02-2008, 09:48 PM
LOL No it wasn't although I still might do something along the Ndebele lines. The one already done is way better than I could have produced, so rather hope the Carousel horse comes my way!

06-02-2008, 10:03 PM
Well, considering your embroidery is knocking it out of the park...I think you have some skills to throw at these ponies!

I figured you weren't going to make a deconstructed marionette pony. Now THAT would have been ironic (and somewhat scary.)

06-02-2008, 10:08 PM
LOL You know I never thought of embroidery! Now you've got me thinking along a whole different road! :D

06-02-2008, 10:40 PM
Ibus: embroidery would rock!

Nutty, your cards are Awesomesauce on fantastatoast!

06-02-2008, 10:46 PM
Thank ya, thank ya very mush (said in my best Elvis).

Need your addy EQ...gotta send the ponies off to their new stable!

Hmmm... "Design -a- Goat" ....... :D

Thanks for letting me know Nutty! :jiggy:

06-03-2008, 01:34 PM
In Miami, we have painted roosters about town. In Fort Myers/Naples, they have painted alligators. No cows or ponies though.

06-03-2008, 01:38 PM

nuttynanner likes a good nannygoat!

06-03-2008, 01:40 PM
Nah, no goats either. Just roosters here.

06-03-2008, 01:40 PM
Annie, I also need your address, thanks :)

06-03-2008, 02:02 PM
Nope - no painted goats and google doesn't show much other than a police report of men who broke in and spraypainted some goats :err:
there is this one - which is rather cool till you read that some of these goats were to be given to the gods http://www.asianart.com/mustang/goats.html

Dallas did have painted flying horses - they were cool.

06-03-2008, 11:29 PM
They were painting moose around Toronto... http://webhome.idirect.com/~totton/moose/meese.html

06-04-2008, 04:41 AM
In a town here in Sweden, they have painted dragons (http://www.drakparaden.se/rosta08.shtml).

06-04-2008, 06:47 PM
My ponies are ready. There will be an extra one for our host for doing this fun and different swap! (still struggling with the background :err:)

06-04-2008, 08:56 PM
There is a little coop cafe in Kingston called The Sleepless Goat. They have some great quirky goat art hanging around. Its one of my favourite lunch spots. I love the goat art.

06-04-2008, 09:03 PM
Those are great Elena! :D

06-05-2008, 06:38 AM

I came in to peek at the ponies --- lovely work, everyone!

I happened to be in Washington DC when they had pandas everywhere (http://jophan.org/pandamania/). It was great!

Cool ponies, Elena!

06-11-2008, 11:57 AM
Great ponies from Mynameisjenn came!

06-11-2008, 03:28 PM
Oh my, I have gone overboard with the ponies! I set up my light box, and pulled out my paper scraps and started tracing ponies. 23 ponies! Cutting them all out was a chore, but I love them. Most of the backgrounds are water colour, gold pearlex and salt sprinkled on while still wet, a few are 'polished stone'. The manes and tails are Stickles, very glittery! I'll send in the ponies for this swap today, and the rest I'll take to the next live trade at the end of the month. These are so much fun to make!
How to decide which to send in???

06-11-2008, 04:03 PM
Holy cats, Stormy!

One for each of us!!!

(I did the same thing with the Russian Doll swap...couldn't help myself!)

06-11-2008, 04:20 PM
holy CATS? now there is another swap to start up!.....
I've sent one pony card to my dad, so that leaves 22. Most of the time, for me anyway, its the MAKING that I like best, I just have to see how its going to turn out if I use 'this' or 'that'....

06-11-2008, 06:28 PM
my goodness stormarella, you're just as bad as I am with the Collage a Thon!!!!:chatterbox:

06-11-2008, 06:35 PM
But you mean bad as in Michael Jackson BAD!

Wooo...moonwalking bad!

06-11-2008, 06:36 PM
And y'all let me know who's hosting the Holy Cats thread, would you?

06-11-2008, 06:53 PM
well, I guess I am going to have to host a Holy Cats thread, once I get my mind wrapped around just what on earth it is going to be! ... Any suggestions?

Now as for these bad ponies, its only to be expected, ya know, I'm in Calgary, and we are gearing up for the Calgary Stampede in less than a month. Its all about HORSES...

06-11-2008, 06:58 PM
Horses and kitties...oh my. Calgary Stampede...love that, would be a great John Wayne movie title.

How about Holy Kitties on Horseback?

Just sign me up. Though...I have enough iTraders...but need another month of being on this site before I can host. Stormy...gonna help me come up with my first idea? And you ARE going to sign up, aren't you???????

06-11-2008, 07:03 PM
like when do I not sign up??? seems I have a bit of an addiction....

06-11-2008, 09:19 PM
OH MY! You did have a good time - you have a whole stable full of ponies!! :)

06-11-2008, 09:28 PM
Holy Cats? Maybe kitties with wings and halos....or maybe kitties made of swiss cheese...:wideeyed:

06-11-2008, 09:29 PM
I'm chuffed you has so much fun Susan! They are all fantastic :D

06-12-2008, 01:28 AM

06-12-2008, 03:57 PM
TCB (dare I mention Elvis to Stormy...), BUT I've learned our ATC bud is one who knows how to:

Stormy is all that and a bag of holy-kitty potato chips (what the?!)

06-12-2008, 04:46 PM
ha ha, I have no idea what you are gibbering on about... nanner,, Elvis?? does Elvis do ATCs? he he he...
Oh, wouldn't an ELVIS PONY be great? Too late for me, but I am sure someone can slick back the mane on a fringed out Elvis pony!

06-12-2008, 07:27 PM
OMG, an Elvis pony would SO RULE! I know participant before did a Paris Hilton Pony HAHA.

06-13-2008, 01:02 PM
Enter the world of my crazy thought progression: Stormy knows how to "take care of business" aka TCB...Elvis was big on the term TCB...Nanner is big on Elvis and mentions The King to Stormy...Stormy takes fun/funky ideas and makes swaps...before Nanner knows it, she's signed up for the Elvis TCB Holy Toledo Pony Swap Part II!

What, you didn't get that from my earlier post? Hee!

EQ...if an Elvis pony comes in, I MUST HAVE IT.:elvis:

06-13-2008, 03:11 PM
A whole swap of Elvis ponies...
I think I'd die laughing.
Nanner, you are a bad drug for me. I just had a vision of an Elvis Furries swap. All Elvis anthropomorphic animal characters. (why limit it to just ponies)

06-13-2008, 03:39 PM
All Elvis anthropomorphic animal characters. (why limit it to just ponies)

anthropomorphic...hubba hubba, whatta word!

Or should I say hunka hunka (as in: burning love!)

Seems we're on the same brainwave now, sister!

Yeah...at this point, just sign me up for all things fun and funky. Ponies, Holy Cats, and Hunka Hunkas.

06-13-2008, 04:23 PM
OMG...what did you TAKE today neener? And why aren't you SHARING?!!!I wish I shared your lov for the "King" but I am so burned out on him its not funny...but I DO quite enjoy pb and nanner sndwiches!!!!

06-13-2008, 05:23 PM
High on life? Or just glue fumes?

CarnieCairn, I know you don't have lots of love for "E", and that's why I won't share my Elvis Chia Head picture with you. Not worthy...yet.

I like a good carnie-apple sometimes, thank ya, thank ya very mush.

06-13-2008, 05:47 PM
OK-That's it. I've sketched my Elvis Pony. :D Pictures to come when he's finished. Snarling lip included. :D

06-13-2008, 06:25 PM
OK-That's it. I've sketched my Elvis Pony. :D Pictures to come when he's finished. Snarling lip included. :D

One down, the first Elvis pony.... I think this will be the Fad for the Summer.

06-13-2008, 06:28 PM
I just made an Elvis pony too! I can't wait to see what your's looks like!

I still need to color mine :(

06-13-2008, 07:31 PM
Ok, just drew and colored my elvis pony. I hate the background, so I'm going to redo that part... but otherwise I kinda like him :D Here he is!

06-13-2008, 07:41 PM

That's it...I'm gonna have to THROW DOWN.

You have all earned the right to see my Elvis Chia Head...gonna go find that pic!

06-13-2008, 07:45 PM
Nowz: I love that Elvis pony with a love that is PURE!

EQ: Sh-sh-sh-sh-shake yours on out here!

Long live THE KING (last spotted at the local Pig Wig, cracker aisle...)

06-13-2008, 07:51 PM
oh my goodness thats cute!!!You know what I JUST remembered when I saw that?I used to collect the Cows on Parade figurines and I DO have the Elvis cow somewhere...I may have already sold it on Ebay tho..can't remember for the life of me!!!LOL!!!! He had on the white jumper outfit and a lei around his neck!!!

06-13-2008, 09:12 PM
The following is NOT for Cairnlae. It's not that I don't *heart* her...but she just FESSED up to SELLING Elvis?!

So close your eyes if you are Karen.

Everyone else...please...enjoy with me...a prized possession...a grab-while-the-house-burns treasure...

the Elvis Chia:

06-13-2008, 09:14 PM
But Nanner's got LOTS of love for The King...

(gotta love white elephant gift exchanges...this was an E decanter that even had a musicbox in the base...oh, how I LOVE the cheesy glitz!)

06-13-2008, 09:19 PM
I wouldn't have taken you for a blonde Nanner!

06-13-2008, 09:19 PM
But the Elvis fetish...no surprise there?

06-13-2008, 10:13 PM
hahaha--here I am imagining nanner to be an older lady... you know, like my NANNY :D who-obviously loves elvis and there she goes springing this hot chick photo on me! wowzers, neener! :D unfortunately I colored my hair today and I am joining the blonde club for a moment too (boo hoo hoo)...:elvis:

06-13-2008, 10:22 PM
holy hunka hotties! ... Elvis is in the building! and... I really couldn't have imagined an Elvis Chia pet ever.. someday I will tell my grandchildren about this...

06-13-2008, 10:30 PM
A day late and a dollar short. AGAIN. Full I see. Can I be added to the wait list please? I love this idea. Gonna make some anyway, and I'll be ready if a spot opens. If not, I'll have them for tradingl

06-13-2008, 10:52 PM
This is showing my age, but I remember the FIRST time Elvis was on the Ed Sullivan Show. It was a big deal...many parents weren't too sure of that hip thing ;)
I remeber my sister and I were at a neighbors to watch with her. I also remember the first time the Beatles hit the U.S. ...big ta doo there too.
So mild compared to the "stuff" that's out there today. Elvis really did have a great voice.

06-14-2008, 10:26 AM
Patti: Yes! I shall add you to the waiting list! :jiggy:

OMG All the Elivs-Love is is prompting me to finish my pony! All my Spanish homework has been preventing it

06-14-2008, 10:28 AM

06-17-2008, 05:00 PM
Cool herd, jennalee!

06-17-2008, 05:17 PM
Question to pony artists. Do you paint your ponies and the background on the same card, or do you paint your ponies, cut them out and glue them to backgrounds. On some it looks one way and some the other way. Is either way ok?

06-17-2008, 05:44 PM
Hi EQ, I'm brand new to this ATC thing, but am a collector of the Painted Ponies, even way out here in sunny Scotland. I'd love to join this swap, please let me in.

06-17-2008, 05:51 PM
Patti, I was wondering the same thing!

I used a light box, and traced with a sharpie my ponies on decorated paper, then cut them out, and glued them to painted backgrounds. I think there are all kinds of different methods, the pictures all look so intriguing!

06-17-2008, 07:00 PM
I simply printed out the ponies, glued an ATC sized piece of card stock to the back of the printer paper, trimmed it to size and decorated the backgrounds and ponies with marker and colored pencil. I guess there are lots of ways to do it though.

06-17-2008, 07:50 PM
I printed out the pony and then cut out the outline. I carefully traced around it onto my background with pencil, then I decided what I wanted and used a black fine pt. marker to draw it and the mane and tail. painted or in one case scratched it and in another, I embossed the pony on copper foil. Hope that helps.

06-17-2008, 09:50 PM
Patti: Any method you like can be used/should work! I just didn't want people to leave any computer line print out showing, because it just doesn't look nice

bex: you're in!

ALL: This turning people away crap sux eggs; everyone on the waiting list is in too if they still want to join: Just don't publicize that I've gone soft, okay people?

06-17-2008, 09:57 PM
*snickering to RK* Told you it'd work! *hiding voodoo doll with ephemera stuck to it behind ample behindish area*

*assuming properly grateful face*
Thaaaaaaaaaaannnnnnnk you, EraserQueeeeeeeeeeeen! :jiggy:

06-19-2008, 10:40 AM
I'm in! Woo hoo!!

06-20-2008, 01:03 AM
My ponies are ready to mail, but I'll need your address Eraser Queen, please.

I must get a new scanner. Lately it just doesn't do justice to my cards. the colors simply don't hack it. But here are my ponies, such as they look with this crummy scanner.

06-20-2008, 01:06 AM

They are posted in my gallery, if you would like a peek.

06-24-2008, 12:41 PM
Woah! They look cool Carole! I can't wait to see them in person, some of those techniques you used sound really awesome!

06-24-2008, 12:56 PM
I think I am going in pony shock, maybe a pony induced seizure.. they ALL look so good. Ponies must be highly inducing to creativity!

06-24-2008, 02:21 PM
Anybody have an idea for something else I could draw for us all to design?

(please don't pick a pig...that was suggested before and I'm having a hard time making a cool looking pig  ...)

06-24-2008, 02:32 PM
COWS!!! :D ;)
