Swap Due Date: July 15
Signup/Withdrawal Date: July 1
Number of Chunky Pages: 6 for 6
Number of Participants: 36 maximum

"Words of Wisdom" Mixed-Media Chunky Book Pages Swap

So I was thinking that focusing on quotes in a chunky swap would be a wonderful compliment to other swaps, like Katxena's "Creative Life" swaps . . . because I'm only asking participants to send in 6 pages, the returns could easily be added to or alternated with the pages from another swap. And, if this swap is successful, I'll run a sequel!

By WORDS OF WISDOM, I mean that each page should have a famous quote or a literary quote on it. The quotes can be about art, about cats, about love, about life . . . no limits! It should just be a quote that speaks to you.

There are many web sites that have search-able databases of quotes on a wide variety of topics . . . look around, or use ones you already have.

wisdomquotes.com (http://www.wisdomquotes.com/)
quotegarden.com (http://www.quotegarden.com/)
quotationspage.com (http://www.quotationspage.com)
coolquotes.com (http://www.coolquotes.com/categories.php)

You must have a positive iTrader rating of +5 to sign up & to play.

This swap is open to US and international artists. [See the "Postage" section below for more information re: postage requirements.]

You'll be making 6 pages to send in . . . and you'll receive 6 pages from 6 different artists in return.

These will be due on July 15. All withdrawals must be made by July 1--if you decide before then that you can't complete the swap for any reason, it's totally fine! Things come up, and priorities change. I'm cool with that! However, if you choose to withdraw after July 1, you will receive a neutral iTrader rating, as it will be more than likely too late to replace you in the swap.

This swap is for 4"x4" chunky book pages. This is an MIXED MEDIA chunky book--so make sure you are comfortable with this medium before signing up. On the host forum recently, the idea of "effort, not expertise" was discussed--and that's what i'd like to see here. All artists should confidently send in work that highlights their own level of skill, but all the results should consistently show time and care.

ALL pages must be original artwork. NO making one page and then photocopying it five times. Also, mixed media means that no pages can be wholly digital collage.

Please make double-sided pages, so that when they are in a book, they are appealing on both leaves. Include your name & artist ID on the back of each page, but feel free to also include other info [date, location, title of page, or whatever].

Use a thicker paper or light board for the pages themselves--the chipboard from cereal boxes & cake mixes is a perfect, cheap answer. The minimum thickness would be postcard-weight. Mat board would be the thickest you'd want to go.

note: pages cut from "recycled" food boxes can be covered with papers or text pages, or painted/gessoed--if you don't want people to know you eat FrankenBerry.

Remember these pages are intended [in theory] to be used in a book. Please do not place chunky embellishments on the left edges, as this is where people choose to bind them or use them for hanging. Everyone will be binding their own returns.

Chunky pages can have fibers, wire, beads, tags and/or assorted weird things dangling off of and around the edges. The pages themselves should not be so thick that they can't close comfortably into a book. Look at the posted images in other chunky swap threads, or see the examples below [coming soon] for more ideas. Feel free to use sewing machine stitching, staples, brads, eyelets and other more offbeat fasteners on your pages.

Please avoid sticky pages . . . do not use ModPodge as a final seal on your art.

U.S. Postage:
SASE--When you take your chunky book pages to have them mailed, BEFORE sealing the envelope, have it weighed and then add the same amount of loose postage to the envelope. Or, if you like, pop 2 well-concealed dollars in the envelope.

International Postage:
International players can send U.S. currency, or use PayPal. PayPal will require a 50-cent bump, to cover their fee. These are low-ball estimates; I'll cover any overages in postage cost.
Canada: 3.00 [3.50 PayPal]
Australia or Europe: 6.00 [6.50 PayPal]

NOTE TO ALL PLAYERS RE: POSTAGE . . . I love super-chunky pages, so I'm not setting any limits, but be kind-hearted. If you're pages are super thick or super heavy, toss an extra couple of stamps or an extra buck in your envelope.

Anyone who as yet to send their pages: each card should be enclosed in a sandwich/zippie bag, as the other options (wax paper, bubble wrap, envies, plastic wrap) are harder to swap. Cheapo bags from the dollar store are fine--these also keep your pages from melting into one giant heap.

Chunkies will be due IN MY HANDS by July 15, 2008. This gives everyone about six weeks to get pages done & mailed. Late pages will not be swapped, and will be returned to the original artist[s].

Everyone, including me, can only sign up for ONE set of six, so we reach maximum variety in returns!

I am excited about this! Does anyone have any tips on lettering? My handwriting is OK, but I don't know how to make some of those funky letters or what types of pens to use. I have 2 backgrounds ready to go and would love to get started.

Also, serendipity at work, I bought some vintage dominoes on Etsy and as a thank you gift the seller sent me 10 quotes written out on fancy paper and some of the are awesome!

i know, susan . . . not meaning mine [lol], but there's a good mix there. and i love that stamp on electablue's page in the background!

kati, i often use fonts & microsoft word to print out pages, cut out the lines, and glue them on. some great typewriter fonts and handwriting fonts [amid tons of other stuff] can be found online:

Typewriter Fonts (http://www.1001freefonts.com/typewriter-fonts.htm)
Handwriting Fonts (http://www.kevinandamanda.com/scrapbook/fonts/)

And www.twopeasinabucket.com sells fonts, like 3 bux each, that are awesome. It's a pain to find that section of their site, though . . . here's the link: http://www.twopeasinabucket.com/shop/list/?c=46&f=506_c

additionally, there's always the ransom-note magazine collage look. :D And, your own handwriting can be awesome, even if it's not traditionally "cute."

your pages will be great, i know it. :spinny:

OK, I have finished the front side of my first chunkie ever! A question: The back side has the same texturizing and color as the front...I know I need to add artist info, but do I need to add more art or is that enough?

amyfaerie
06-02-2008, 12:20 AM
kati, that looks fantastic! :D

if you're back is textured & colored like the front, then adding your info would be fine! it's just not cool to leave a back blank, or with only your info. usually, everyone does a "light" version of the front, but that's all, and that's what you're describing!

i really like the page . . . and i love the lil' skullie in the fibers!

katilady
06-02-2008, 12:43 AM
OK, great! It does have the same texture and coloration...varied of course, but similar. I will add my info and call it done! Thanks for walking me thru my 1st chunkie page!

BTW, the quote reads: "You gain strength, courage an confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face." --Eleanor Roosevelt

06-02-2008, 07:10 PM
Thank you both! I am really having fun with this! Amy you have turned me on to chunkies, one more thing to obsess over...shame on you, lol!

BTW, all the backgrounds look deceptively simple but they took hours to create....I posted how I did them in the art discussions area.

I have a 3rd done and a 4th started on, I think I will post my remaining ones all together so as not to crowd the thread.

Also, what is a good hostess gift for a chunkie swap? Another chunkie like in ATC swaps or is there some other tradition?

ArteDar
06-02-2008, 07:11 PM
Okay Amy,.....I'll have a scotch and water....just a lil' ice too....ROFLMAO!Thanks baby cakes!
I found some quotes that I might be able to work with. Guess it would be better to pick the quote and then build on it....daahhhh!!!

Here's a few I picked....so HANDS OFF YA'LL!!!!! just kidding!!

Between two evils, I always pick the one I never tried before. Mae West

I always wanted to be somebody, but now I realize I should have been more specific. Lily Tomlin

Life is hard. After all, it kills you. Katharine Hepburn

here are some of my fav funny ones and can't wait to do 'em!

Some cause happiness wherever they go: others whenever they go. Oscar Wilde

The mosquito is the state bird of New Jersey. Andy Warhol I live in Jersey and can't wait to do my first Andy W. interpratation....fun!

LOVE this one!!! O Lord, help me to be pure, but not yet. Saint Augustine

A converted cannibal is one who, on Friday, eats only fishermen. Emily Lotney
wanna try and make a man that is part fish....zetti, funky and fun!

It's so beautifully arranged on the plate- you know someone's fingers have been all over it. Julia Child MMMmmmm FOOD!!!!

AND LAST....too funny... for us Amy....heehee.....
I cook with wine, sometimes I even add it to the food. W.C. Fields

Now I'm pumped up and would love to hear a few that others have picked to work with.
KATIE.....I love your chunkies.....really really well done!

Ooooo, LOL, I was just thinking of

ArteDar
06-02-2008, 07:23 PM

Also, what is a good hostess gift for a chunkie swap? Another chunkie like in ATC swaps or is there some other tradition?

It depents of the host.

- You can check Amy's profile if she has a wishlist
- You can asked her

or, and that's what I often do, make an extra page as an ATC-swap or sent extra and special goodies which she really could use. Mostly I look into the gallery to see with what kind of material a host loves to work and what kind of style she/he works.

Susan....I love the first one and have Mary Engelbreit's interpretation on note cards.....has a lil' girl in the tree on the end of a branch reaching for the "fruit". She makes AWESOME quotes of her own also....and of course her illustrations are endearing and sweet.

And....ALL GREEN....how kewl is that! I'm sure we all have tons of stuff that can be recycled....junk mail....food and item packing containers...found objects...etc. Great idea....may have to try it myself!

Yes, it would....and I have contemplated it for some time.....the thing is I have a LOVE/HATE thing for plastics and find it hard to envision it as pretty, kewl or the lest bit sexy....it would be the challenge of all time for me to recycle ol' plastic bottle caps, baggies (CD's have been done nicely before),Styrofoam or the sort.....BUT....would have NP with ol' phone books, junk mail, newspapers and the like.

Green color is good....generates creativity, so they say! Can't wait to see 'em. Have fun with the water colors too.

Elisa, I've got you on the list! My goodness, everyone's chatting it up tonight, and I wasn't here! LOL!

I love the quotes you're all posting . . . awesome stuff! and Dar, those funny ones are great. I LOVE that Warhol quote, and that Mae West quote rocks!

Kati, as with all swaps, you don't have to send a hostess gift. If you'd like, I'm not picky. LOL! Some hosts like an extra page [just like suggesting an extra ATC] in the swap theme--but heck. That's some work, and I'd never want anyone to feel obligated. :cute:

I've sent other hosts extra pages, but I've also sent ephemera, or bits 'n bobs, if they're collage artists. I think with my "fresh fish" pages, I sent several "fishy" things . . . stuff I didn't use on my own pages.

Artdar, I have been cracking up like a fool laughing so hard reading your posts!

I've got a a couple of quotes:

"It's not a party until the shrimp ring comes out." - Juli Waller

"It's all fun until someone puts an eye out." - Juli Waller

JK, those are just a couple of Grrrdjules' user titles that I can remember. That girl cracks me up too.

Okay, read through the last 4 pages and got all caught up. FUN Quotes guys!

Someone remember to refill Dar's glass, too.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Mar's quote. That's pretty much my philosophy (keep trying til you get it right) and would have loved to hold that over heads this weekend at the meet up!

I have chosen my quote, I love it SO much I will probably use it on all my pages. It's an Anton Chekhov quote. It's from a letter he wrote to his wife. I found it several months ago in a book I was tearing up to alter and have it pinned above my computer on the board so I see it every day. If it inspires me, I hope it will do the same to you guys! I'll work on these later this week.

My goodness, everyone's chatting it up tonight, and I wasn't here! LOL!

We have a quote here in the Netherlands for that, LOL, don't know if you know it too in the States, it sounds:

When the cat is out of the house, the mouses are dancing on the table, :jiggy:.

I was thinking a little as OriginalYouth, probably one quote, different theme. But I'm still not sure, I will let you know when I know what direction I will go. And which quote(s) I will use. I have so many favorit English quotes they sounds so different and beautiful as when you say it in Dutch.

Mar, I know that quote, in Canada, we say; "When the cats away, the mice will play"

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Mar's quote. That's pretty much my philosophy (keep trying til you get it right) and would have loved to hold that over heads this weekend at the meet up!

Hey OY! We had a 20 hour craft making session and we didn't keep at it long enough?:swoon:

I can't wait to get started on all my pages. I have some of my backgrounds done already, but haven't decided on the quotes.

Hey baby! I want in!

I've got a little notebook stuffed with mad quotes perfect for this swap - how about lyrics? One of my favourites is by The Lemonheads "Patience is like bread I say. I ran out of that yesterday." Oh and "May the force be with you"??? oooh and I have a brilliant Dolly Parton quote scribbled somewhere...

so you want me or not? ;)

Tanya

Don't ya think she might have looked like this as a child? I adored her, as many people did....I can still remember how her voice sounded....one of the first in television cooking.....bless her heart! This quote says, It's so beautifully arranged on the plate- you know someone's fingers have been all over it.
This has a pocket on the back with vintage goodies and ol' index receipt card, the real S&H green stamps.....and I LICKED 'EM TOO!!!! ROFLMAO!!! and I added my own lil' blurb of a treasured memory in the kitchen with mommy and relatives.

I have 4 others too, but this crystal eye thingy is not the easiest to get good pix with.....and ya sure as hell don't wanna see me live....:err:

Yeah....ALL Star War stuff goes to OY!!!!!

Nope....not a POG (game peice).....this is the real thing.....I bought some OLD milk caps at a local flea market. I'm trying to use my best materials and original emphermera....I'm having fun and will have a good reason to go thrift store, flea market and yard salein' if I use it up.....yeah, right.....well any excuse to go find lil' treasures when in a pinch:rolleyes:

It's a movie based on the book "Julie and Julia" - it was a blog in which Julie tried to cook every recipe in Julia's cookbook. I used to follow the blog, it was hilarious. She liked her vodka and tonics! The blog is still up. http://blogs.salon.com/0001399/2002/08/25.html

i just sent a PM to Carolina Soap Chef to see if she wants to play . . . she's a newbie, but she makes chunkies, and hopefully she'll give this swap a spin! i hope that's okay with everyone!

[my reason for making the +5 iTrader rating rule was just to avoid including newbies who might disappear mid-swap. In my first swap, 3 participants with a 0 iTrader rating just fell off the face of the earth. so don't think it's a quality thing . . . it's not.]

LOL, o Amy you lucky girl, and you get all the yummies at first in your hands. It should be hard to let them go.

Great work until so far.

I think I have my theme and almost all my quotes, yehhh. I stay in the old classic feeling as far I am now. Need to do a little shopping for embellies and so on. I will make a connected serie. Just to try something new.

The base of the chunkies will be one large painting of fabric, but still all different :goofy:.

amyfaerie
06-07-2008, 08:48 AM
that is really a cool idea . . . using one large painting to then break up into the bases for all the pages, mar. i'm anxious to see how these develop, as a series and as individual pieces.

i know . . . i've never hosted a chunky swap, and already [with the first pages] i'm thinking i can see how hard it's going to be to let these little babies go in july!

Oh Amy.....WARNING!!!! I'll be sending in extras so that you can pick out the better ones to swap....I'll send extra $ for the returns that you don't use....if that's ok with you.....have to ask first

Thanks so much ya'll! I wasn't sure what the hell I was doing most of the time, but once I got into it I discovered that chunkies may be awesomer (yes, it is a word....in MY dictionary anyway :P) than ATC's. The bigger size means more room to play AND you can add lots of stuff to 'em which you can't do in some of the ATC swaps!

amyfaerie
06-09-2008, 02:11 PM

I wanted to share this "GREEN" chunkie with ya'll.....and NO...ROFL.....it's not color green...heehee!
We have a really nice zoo here in Cape May....and free too...but we always make a donation. A few yrs. ago I found journals and cards in the gift store that was recycled elephant poo~poo made into paper....well, of course I HAD to have it!!!!
I use it sparingly 'cause it's so special to me.....who knew I could get turned on with chit?!!! ROFLMAO!!! I'm including a part of the lable and a bit of elephant history...it's just too kewl! I used an old tea bag envie, old junk jewelry, metal bits from mail envelopes and a Chinese fortune which is the quote..."Your heart is a place to draw happiness"...as well as the blue and beige (?) color poo~poo paper.

the last 3 (front pix) are going to have more fibers and lil' dangels too.

Well, any way....about the time he was with them they had on the news a clip of an elephant that sat on top of a guys head.....I thought for sure it was son.....TG it wasn't....that po' guy could have suffocated....imagine the poo he had to clean off his face....ROFLMAO!!!!!!. BE VERY CAREFUL when you start to collect your poo!!!!!

"Big K, little k, what begins with K?" I don't remember... it's from Dr. Suess ABC book but if I go looking I'll wake up a kid or worse - a husband - so I'll get back to you. Your page is a hoot. I'm just not feeling the love for any quotes, pages or anything right now... been 2-3 days, that's a big slump for me. Oh well, it'll come to me.

I may need to make slush. Or dump my demanding corporate client who is so wasting my time right now - that's it!

I showed this to my boyfriend and he said:
"Eh. They all can't be pygmies fighting a giant gorilla"
That may be my next quote.
6 pages is easy.
6 quotes is hard.

And my desk is messy.

Okay, so I was getting in a funk trying to find important quotes of the change-your-life variety and now that I've given up that lofty goal (for me anyway!) I think I got my groove back.
Check out this (http://www.flickr.com/photos/grrrdjules/) (the first two images in gallery) and be prepared for the "always wear clean undies" page.

Hello everyone!
After wanting into this swap for so long, and then finally getting in, I am so sad that I have to withdraw  Someone has just quit at my work so Im now doing double shifts so theres just not enough time for me to fulfil my obligations :( The chunkies that Ive made already I worked so hard on and I wouldnt want my remaining three to be really rubbish in comparison! If anyone wants one of my pages to add to their chunky book just PM me and I will send it to you, I have no use for them now!
I hope everyone understands and has fun in this swap which has been producing AMAZING work!
