Recently there have been several cute garden gnome pages posted in the Garden Chunky book and they were so cute that I decided to host a whole swap based on this idea. Please try to use a mix of media, such as: watercolor, acrylic, ink, rubber stamps, collage, brads, charms, fabric, metal, glitter, hand drawing etc. and most importantly please make them colorful!
Creating pages:
* All pages should be 4"x4" and well constructed, preferably of matboard or illustration board, but no lighter than 140 lb. watercolor paper or two sheets of cardstock glued together.
* Please include username, real name, origin (country) and anything else you want to say about yourself on the backs of the pages. Make the backs of the pages interesting and not just plain white, but you don't need to make it as decorative as the front.
*Chunky books are called "chunky" because they have fibers or beads, embellishments or whatever hanging off the sides and/or the pages have different textures and chunkiness to them.
* All cards must be different and distinct. Originals only - no scanned copies or prints.
*Leave 1/2 inch on the left side free of embellishments for binding. You will bind your own pages.
*You will be sending in either 4 or 8 pages.
*If you use images or stickers please alter them so they are your own work and not just a sticker glued on a piece of paper.
Shipping:
All participants must pay their own shipping in this swap. In similar swaps in the past the shipping was:
--USA: $2.50
--Canada: $2.50
--Europe: $4
--Australia and New Zealand: $5
You can do any of the following to cover your shipping:
-US participants can send well-concealed cash, US stamps, or money via paypal.
-International participants can also send well concealed U.S. cash, or paypal.
-Note:*If you are using paypal, please add $0.50 cents extra for the paypal charges.
*Please include username and swap name on all envelopes sent in.
* All pages should be sent in baggies, wrapped in wax paper , or something similar to protect them.
* Please PM for my address when you are ready to send your cards.
Fine Print - All pages are due in my hands by the due date. Late pages will be returned. Also. poorly constructed/sloppy pages will be returned. I will update the thread when I receive your pages. Please allow up to 3 days for trader ratings. I would really like people to commit to doing the swap and not withdraw, but if you must please send me a PM. I will send one reminder PM (two weeks out for international, one week for local). Late arrivals or no withdraw communication/no cards will receive neutral feedback.
Thank you for participating in the swap! I look forward to seeing everyone’s artwork!

Amy, I hope you hand paint some gnomes. I have seen you post other times that you can't draw/paint and I know for a fact that that is NOT true because I have a mermaid chunky book page you painted and it is fabulous!

You are too funny! I have been thinking of doing some women gnomes and basing them on the ones in the book Gnomes by Wil Huygen. You should check it out if you haven't seen it. I think there are some topless women in that one, but no fins.

Lisebu, great lady gnome!
Storm, that gnome book has some naked gnomes in it, but I don't think they were that hairy! Of course, you can make up whatever you want.

ElectaBlue

I have to say that the gnomes aren't too attractive naked.
Bodecia Arietty
06-10-2008, 12:18 PM
Ok I have to join this one. I love gnomes. I actually have a gnome that goes traveling with me and take pictures of. His name is Herman.
ElectaBlue
06-10-2008, 12:19 PM
Welcome Bodecia! I can't wait to see what you come up with for Herman.
Who else is going to join us?
amyfaerie
06-13-2008, 07:06 AM
oh, that's just heinous . . . hairy chests and boobies just don't seem like a pairing anyone needs on a gnome, let alone on a chunky page!
you're right, electablue . . . i think that book does have some lady gnomes in a state of undress. i'll have to look that up! my family used to have a copy of that book that we passed around, regifting it, for years. i don't know who has it!
amyfaerie
06-13-2008, 07:07 AM
herman deserves his own chunky page, i think. :D i hope at least a few of your travelling photos of herman make it into your pages, bodecia!
here's my first one!

I am stoked for gnomes. You could say I am on a gnome hunt. I had a gnome pencil sharpener for years and years, since I was about 5 years old, a souvenir from Ireland. I wonder where he is hiding!
I love every gnome chunky I see so far... but that is expected, great artist are making them.. . and,, how can you go wrong with a gnome?
ElectaBlue
06-13-2008, 04:13 PM
Amy, that is a super cute gnome! He is decently covered and everything. I was expecting some half naked gnome.
amyfaerie
06-13-2008, 05:12 PM
if a person were to go to google image search and type in "naked gnome," you will find that one of the first image results is a statue of two gnomes having sex. no kidding.
i did like this .gif that i found . . . i'm putting it in my signature line.
ElectaBlue
06-13-2008, 05:45 PM
Hey maybe having the gnome in your signature line will help us get more people in here. I thought gnomes would be much more popular.
That gnome is much better looking than the ones in my book!

I've been reading this thread... you make me laugh! :D
I would love to join this swap but I don't have the required minimum Itrader yet.

06-14-2008, 08:44 AM
ElectaBlue : absolutely!! I've planned to make a series of strip-teaser garden gnomes in different situations!! Let's call them "Chippendale garden gnomes".
Anyone interested ? ;)
amyfaerie
06-14-2008, 11:44 AM
heck, that gnome isn't much of a tease . . . it's all hangin' out there. :err:
ElectaBlue
06-14-2008, 05:41 PM
Who would have thought that this would turn into the indecent gnome thread?
I think an atc swap would probably get LOTS more participants, but I am taking a break from ATCs completely. Once I get a few more commitments done I will start on these and I can't wait! I have some really funny (in my mind, at least) ideas for these gnomes.

Yes, I agree, yeah for Batraplume! I actually had already gone ahead and added her because I knew she would make it. Actually, I think I should have made the I-trader lower since you can send in just 4 pages and I was basing it on the 9 for 9 pages I did for history in living color.
stormarela
07-09-2008, 04:58 PM
I've got gnomes on the brain now. I'm starting to think I NEED one in my back yard. Which, by its self isn't too bad, however I have a feeling that they multiply, and oh, what a nightmare, all of a sudden there are a hundred of them in my backyard.......
Batraplume
07-09-2008, 05:49 PM
You know what? Before I heard about this swap I hated garden gnomes!!! Really!! I couldn't bear to see them in people's garden.
Then you all came with your chunky pages and your great sense of humour and I find that the idea is so much fun that now I am almost obsessed with garden gnomes!!
We have a French movie here called "She sees garden gnomes everywhere", I think I could play in a remake !!
So many surprising things happen on this forum.... I would never have suspected half of them!! I'm so happy to be with you all!!
By the way, I've made 4 pages and one is naughty... don't know if I will dare to send it...
ElectaBlue
07-09-2008, 05:54 PM
My plan has worked!!! Now everyone is obsessed with Garden Gnomes (or at least the people in the swap.
Batraplume, when I think of gnomes I always think of the movie, Amelie. It is one of my favorite movies!
stormarela
07-09-2008, 06:11 PM
oh no, not gnome movies.... now I will have to see THOSE too. is there no mercy?
Andreananda

I saw some at Big Lots and stood there for a while thinking...hmmmmm...maybe I need one?? But I couldn't decide which one I liked so I gave up.
ElectaBlue
07-09-2008, 06:39 PM
I bet there are quite a few gnomes movies. There is one called the Gnomemobile, which is just a horrible movie, but I have the song from it run through my head whenever I think of gnomes. I used to call my beat up old station wagon the Gnomemobile and I had a bumper sticker that said, "I brake for gnomes." It is the only bumper sticker I ever had on any car I have owned.

Isa, maybe you will start actually wearing a little red pointy hat, or taking your garden gnome with you everywhere and taking your picture with it!
Batraplume
07-11-2008, 02:46 PM
Well... I don't have any garden gnome... yet! :D But I am seriously thinking about adopting one. If I find one (which doesn't seem to be easy around here) I promise I'll take some pictures!! And I can make a red pointy hat too and then recycle it with black paint for Amy's Halloween swap!!
If I do that, please... order a camisole for me!!
ElectaBlue
07-11-2008, 05:38 PM
I am not sure what the reference to a camisole is?
That would be fun to dress up in outfits that match our swaps! Right now I would be dressed for the circus.:jimlad:

07-11-2008, 05:44 PM
Sorry, I thought it was the same word as in French!
Is "straitjacket" better ?
ElectaBlue
07-11-2008, 06:02 PM
Yes! I almost asked if that is what you meant. A gnome in a little camisole and pointy hat sounded far too cute, but then you would be a French gnome, so who knows?
Batraplume
07-12-2008, 07:58 AM
Yep! who knows with a French gnome! Hope you noticed my new garment... The gene mutation occured last night...
ElectaBlue
07-12-2008, 04:21 PM
Isa, it is a very small garment!
Stormarelas cute little guys are here! My favorite part is the little shrinky dink charms, especially the little mushrooms!
stormarela
07-13-2008, 07:50 PM
I should have made more 'shrooms, they were kind of an after-thought. Nothing is easier than drawing a mushroom. (or atleast the way I do it)

07-15-2008, 10:16 AM
I'm completely gnomified! :twitcy:
Here are 4 of my 8 garden gnomes... They are on their way to you Electa, watch your mailbox... If you hear some little voices, you'll know you will have visitors!
The 1st is the "sleeping gnome", the 2nd is the "perfect gnome", the 3rd is the "secret gnome" (and I've added another partial view of it but I keep the secret.. secret!), the 4th is called "ZZZzzz".
Batraplume
07-15-2008, 10:22 AM
And here are my 4 last gnomes...
You have : the gnome lost in the forest, the footbath (I had much fun making this one!), the cultured gnome and the music lover.
Gezza
07-15-2008, 10:49 AM
Batraplume those gnome pages are class, you really seem to have got inside their head. Maybe you do wear a red pointy hat and a vest???????
ElectaBlue
07-15-2008, 11:16 AM
All those gnomes are wonderful! I can't wait to see the secret one and see what the secret is. I agree with Geeza that you must be wearing a red pointy hat by now?
Still no more gnomes in my mailbox. I know that several were sent a while ago, so I suspect they are at the post office, wreaking havoc with the U.S. Postal Service. I have noticed while hosting these swaps that they seem to come in batches, so I will probably get 4 in one day.
JoyFlower

Gezza and Electa, yes, of course I wear the gnomes clothes night and day, that's the least I can do!
And when I'm back home from work I sing "Hi hooo, hi hooo!..."
Electa, you'll have to wait a little bit before discovering the secret... (just hope I won't be fired from the swap... or from the forum!!)
ElectaBlue
07-15-2008, 01:42 PM
Batra, you make it sound even more intriguing! If it is dangerous, I may just have to keep that one for myself. Also, I think you are getting a little too carried away with this gnome thing. Isn't the hi ho song supposed to be for dwarfs? They aren't the same thing are they?
Batraplume
07-15-2008, 02:10 PM
Aren't dwarfs and garden gnomes cousins? Just wondering. We translate both words the same way in French so I probably get confused.
And you're right, I need to think to something else than gnomes by now! ;)
stormarela
07-15-2008, 02:50 PM
well, the "hi hoo" dwarfs are diamond miners... which I really don't think those garden gnomes are cut out to do.... gnomes seem to be much less inclinded to WORK... I only see them playing around here and there. ... they might be cousins, probably third cousins twice removed... or something like that.
I'm just on my way out shopping, and I am pretty sure I NEED to get my own gnome on the way home. Any guesses as to the colour of his pointy hat?
ElectaBlue
07-15-2008, 02:58 PM
Then there are also the garden gnomes in the Harry Potter books where the gnomes live in the Weasley's yard. Those gnomes are nasty little guys.
I always thought dwarves were just like small people, and gnomes are much smaller. I didn't realize they were the same word in French. Obviously, I need to do more research.

Lisebu, I don't know why yours took so much longer than Gezza's and Batraplume's, which I would think would take a similar amount of time. You mailed yours before either of theirs. The good thing is that they arrived safe and sound.
Dana, thanks for letting me know! I was beginning to wonder if they were lost or you just didn't get around to mailing them. I know that it can be a real pain to get to the post office. The post office on campus near my library is closing August 1st, so I am not sure how I am ever going to get things mailed if I have to drive somewhere else. They are supposed to be opening some sort of alternative thing, but they have to remodel first and then I am sure they will charge a premium.

just letting you know they are picking up the package in the morning lisa............I am so excited to see the ones you send me. gonna be another chunky book on my coffee table for me to look at alot and admire, as well as friends, family and visitors. my one from the monochromatic page swap is quite the attention getter. my kids look several times when they are visiting, as well as me admiring it and enjoying the different masterpieces of others any time I wish. I used two holes with the locking kind of key ring........if anyone has another idea about how to make them into a book, would love a pm from you! great week everyone. thanks lisa! sandy:wacko::):jiggy:

Mine will be there tomorrow. I hope they are okay...each is hand drawn, with different embellishments added, but they are essentially the same idea with little variations. After I had finished I went back and read everything again, and saw "different and distinct" - hope that just means no photocopies. :err: But if I totally blew it and you have to send them back I understand. :) I'm going to put them on Flickr in a little bit.

We only have one set to left to arrive and then I can get these gnomes swapped out. Artsygemini's pages arrived yesterday and they are simply amazing in person. The scan just didn't pick up the sparkliness and the 3D look of the pages.
I sorted out all the pages last night, but ran out of energy before I could finish packing them up. I will try to get them in the mail tomorrow.

08-01-2008, 01:42 PM
Oh no! Why is your post office closing, Lisa?
ElectaBlue
08-01-2008, 01:48 PM
The campus one is closing because they are going to have a new provider, like a Pack and Mail there, but it won't open until school starts at the end of August, I think. The good news is that it will be open more than 3 hours a day, but I am sure they will charge extra so I may not be able to just walk over during a break at work. It was always so busy because of the short hours and short staffing, anyway.
There is only one post office open in town on Saturday and it is always a minimum of an hour wait!
The postal service is just getting so horrible! Even the people of the counter have said that they think the goal of the post office is to put itself out of business.

I figured it out. I'm not sure that seems very fair, though. It took about 2 weeks to make all those chunky pages. I receive I-trader point for atcs that took me an hour to an hour and a half to make.
Is there any kind of logic to that? Why should someone get the same amount of points for making 8 large art items to swap as they get to make one smaller piece?
I don't want to sound whiny or anything, I just want to stick with chunky swaps and don't plan to trade atcs. I'll never break the 3 digit mark!
ElectaBlue
08-06-2008, 10:48 PM
Crystal, I am so sorry that I didn't explain the whole I-trader/rep thing to you. I totally forgot this was your first swap. The FAQs are here: http://www.atcsforall.com/forum/faq.php?faq=itrader and I think there were also other discussions that were posted if you are interested.
The point of the I-trader system has nothing to do with how long it takes to make something, but is supposed to help keep people honest and tell others whether they are a reliable trader or not. You only give out I-trader points when you actually mail something directly to someone, or if someone makes a card just for you (like in a PAT swap). So you will get an I-trader point every time you trade chunky book pages, as well as ATCs when you trade 1 on 1. One way to get your points is to play in the Play it forward chunky book thread and trade 1 on 1 for chunky pages.
On the old site you only got an I-trader point the first time you traded with someone and after that they didn't count toward your total! I would have closer to 300 I-trader points if this system had been used all along.
goodmorningstarshine
08-07-2008, 09:02 AM
Wow. I guess I was just used to the system at swap-bot, where I would do just about anything for hearts! You could call me a bit obsessive! I've signed up for a couple of inchie swaps now, so that should help! Thanks for the link I'll read up on it!
ElectaBlue
08-07-2008, 11:11 AM
I haven't traded on Swap-Bot, but I suspect the hearts thing is more like the rep points here than the I-trader.
You should try rolos, too! Those are also really fun and they have a practical use.

You did get one of mine, Isa! He's the little guy on the swing next to gigantic bead flower!

If you mean you don't know where to see if someone left you reps, that's easy enough. Just click on "User CP" in the blue bar at the top of your screen...it will show you any subscribed threads with new posts, and your rep comments/points are listed below that. ;)

I am glad that the international pages are starting to arrive!
I am out of town and will have limited internet access until Tuesday, or I would have replied sooner.
Isa, thanks for posting all your pages. They look fantastic when you see them all together like that. I still need to find my camera and take a picture of mine. It took me a while to find Herman hiding with the other gnomes.
Crystal, it took me a while to find the rep points, too. It sure is nice when people leave you all those comments, isn't it?

hi everyone...............I thought I would show you my covers I made for my book, with the gnome pages. I took the copy of some of the pages that was included with our swap pages. I used them to piece together the covers inside and out and one the front I put a title box and then added a black pigment ink drawing of a gnome I did. then I used pigment ink pen to do my doodle and swirl drawing stuff on the images front and back, inside and outside to make it unique and my style too. I hope you all like what I did with those images that show your pages......I really was pleased with it. my other swap covers have always just been printed paper with some of my doodle swirls etc. , but this is better I think.:jiggy:
11392 this is the back and front -inside of the covers
11393 this is the back and front - outside of the covers

Sandy, those cover DO look great! Most of my books just have a page from the swap as the cover. In this swap I have a great cover made for me by Goodmorningstarshine as a gift for me which is really cute.

You know, three of my gnomes are awol, too. I wonder if they've run off somewhere exotic together. Maybe they've gone to Paris? Do you think Paris is romantic, Batraplume, or do you think your gnomes would prefer somewhere else? Maybe we could track them down...

Yours too have disapeared?? But where are they?? I don't think they're in Paris, there are some much more exotic places like Seychelles or Hawai or Tahiti!
And I'm sorry if I break everyone's dream here but I don't consider Paris as a romantic place! I go there for work from time to time, it's smelly (the subway has a particular bad smell), everyone is pulling a face, you are always running to catch your train (and miss it!), well that's not my definition of romanticism!! I would prefer Florenza or Venice in Italy (even if Venice is smelly too!) by far!
I think we should have equipped our gnomes with a microchip (under their caps?) to trail them!!

I think somewhere far from home is always exotic and romantic, isn't it?
I am sorry I can't help anyone know where there gnomes went. All I know is that I divided them up and sent them out, and then they were on their own. I think there were several people who reported receiving their pages, but didn't say who's they received. It seems like it is that way in every swap and I have no idea where half of my pages showed up.
