Printmaking ATCs – Due 15 August

Swap Due Date: 15 August
Sign Up/Withdraw by: 30 July
Number of Cards: 3 for 3
Number of Participants: 30

This swap is for 30 artists to celebrate traditional/hand-pulled printmaking methods, which include but are not limited to linocuts, hand-carved stamps, letterpress, collography, and serigraphy. You could also use some more basic techniques like potato prints and string prints too, if you'd like.

Any and all themes are welcome in this swap.

Please feel free to embellish your cards: use collaged backgrounds, embroider your prints, colour them in, collage over them, etc. I've attached two of my own ATCs that use printmaking methods: the first one is a monotype that I coloured in with ink and the second one is a hand-carved stamp that I embroidered.

The guidelines:
1. Send me 3 ATCs that prominently feature a printmaking method.
2. All hand-pulled printing methods are welcome.
3. Feel free to embellish your prints but please also ensure that the printmaking technique is the key component of your work.
4. Please write your user name on the back of your cards.
5. Please include an address label or a SAE.
6. Please include the following postage:

* Canadian participants, please include as many stamps as it took you to send your cards to me.
* American participants, please include one well-concealed dollar (no coins please).
* Overseas participants, the postage is on me.

7. Cards are due in my hands by 15 August. I live in the middle of Canada and mail from anywhere (domestic and international) can take up to two weeks to arrive on my doorstep. I will mail returns within two weeks of the swap deadline. I will take advantage of the two-week grace period to wait for cards that are taking the long way to Winnipeg.
8. Please PM me for my mailing address when you're ready to send.
9.If you have any questions, please ask them by posting to this thread.
10. As a host, I expect effort, not expertise from players. Newbies and experimenters welcome! Please keep in mind, though, that if you feel like apologising for your ATCs, you should keep working on them until that temptation goes away.

*Any cards that do not meet the requirements will be returned to the artist provided that the appropriate amount of postage to cover returning them is sent.*

Interested? Please sign up by posting to this thread.

Questions? Please PM me or ask them in this thread.

I have several other swaps due soon, but of course this was the one I just HAD to do this weekend! I carved a couple of new stamps, used a couple I'd carved previously, and backed them with hand-marbled paper I made (hey, that sort of counts as another print, doesn't it?). So they will be in the mail tomorrow, officially the earliest I have ever been for a swap...

Mailed June 3rd!

Rooskie--love the potato stamps! I've actually never used them, and I want to try sometime. If you want to try carving something else at some point, I started out with pink erasers from an office supply store and an x-acto knife...those are more available than soft blocks and lino cutters.

I am not doing this swap, cause I just don't think I have the skills for it but I have been dropping by and enjoying the eyecandy. I had to comment on your post Rooskie. My mom was a printmaking major in college and she used to come to my small private school and teach art. One of everyones favorite lessons was when she taught us how to make wrapping paper with potato stamps! You brought back some memories!

So, I went looking for something else, and guess what I found? My basket full of hand carved stamps. Darn, most of them were either too large or too small. I have a few carved tarot cards and a goddess and fortune teller, and some cats that do fit ATCs. I've printed them out and some of them look pretty good. So I'd definitely like to join this swap please. Of course, I'm having the problem of deciding which ones to send, but I'll figure it out.

I'm planning to do three completely different prints. I have an ice-cream cone block that I carved a while back that I might use and I just finished carving a block with a squirrel fish, tube sponge and brain coral. I'm not sure what I will do for the other block or two yet. As long as no one objects I am also planning to prints variations of these prints after the swap. I always try to make each print I pull unique unless I am doing a print exchange where identical prints are expected. Happy printing!

Nasco (I think) makes rubber fish for printing. They were giving out tiny sample ones at an Art teacher conference a few years ago and I used mine to make my "Late for School" ATC which is in my gallery.

Zhenechka

Nasco does make rubber fish for printing. A friend of mine used one for an art project with her students. And while they wouldn't qualify for this project, Fred B. Mullett makes beautiful nature print stamps (http://www.fredbmullett.com/miva/merchant.mvc), including fish.

Well, I've been experimenting a lot but I'm not sure I've come up with anything worthy of the swap! I have lots of handcarved stamps I've already made but I wanted to try new methods for this swap. I've made a linocut that I think will work, a glue print that looks a little funky (probably not swap-worthy), and a few other ideas.

Zhenechka, I'd love to know your position on process vs. product for this swap. Is it about the product or about the challenge of trying new methods?

Can I post a few attempts for critique or should I just go for it?

I'm all for experimentation. I only ask that you be proud of the work you send in. If you're happy with your cards, I say: "Send them in!" If you're unsure or would like some feedback, go ahead and post them them here. Like LavenderLizard, I'm curious about the glue print.

Okay! Here you go! I was away all day so I only saw the requests just now.

The goldfish is a linocut print. The two birds are the glue prints.

Yes, that's right, just draw in glue ( I used glue in a tube but rubber cement works. My husband pointed out I should try it with a glue gun 'cause it would be easier to control and would dry faster), let dry, brayer ink over glue, make print.

My expectations for prints are totally different than my expectations for other art. I always expect prints to be more.... primitive and rough, I guess. I think if I wanted something perfectly rendered in detail, I'd go for a drawing.

So, for me, given my expectations for prints and my desire to experiment with different printmaking techniques, I'm fairly satisfied with these but would like to try a few more (or these techniques and/or others).

kbutts
06-26-2008, 01:16 AM
I think they have a lot of potential. I would suggest trying:

1 - to get even printing pressure (the lower left corner of the fish either wasn't pressed enough or the ink was drying.)

2 - for the birds try to create more contrast between the birds and the background (maybe use a different ink/paint color where the inside of the birds would be.)

That's all I can think of for now. I really like the fish print (I'm a bit of a sucker for marine life). Happy printing.

Zhenechka
06-26-2008, 09:52 AM
Depending on the printmaking technique, I don't expect as much detail either. I think that Kimberly has a couple of good suggestions, technique-wise, in connection with your cards. With lino especially, the image on the plate is usually looser than a hand-drawn image, but - for me especially - the hard work is in getting a clean pull.

I'm curious if you can get more contrast with a glue print? I haven't really looked into the technique so I don't know off the top of my head.

Lily Lemon
06-26-2008, 10:49 AM
I'm curious if you can get more contrast with a glue print? I haven't really looked into the technique so I don't know off the top of my head.

I'm not sure what you mean? There would be more contrast with a different background paper. Or do you mean something else?

Zhenechka
06-26-2008, 11:54 AM
I'm not sure what you mean? There would be more contrast with a different background paper. Or do you mean something else?

Right now, the printed image and the backgrounds of your glue prints are very similar. It's difficult to make out the full image, so more contrast between the background and the image could help the viewer distinguish between the two, unless, of course, the whole point is to not have much contrast between the background and the image.

Lily Lemon
06-26-2008, 12:43 PM
So, yes, if I printed the glue bird on white paper, for example, like I did the goldfish, there would be contrast. I'm probably going to reprint both the bird and the fish. I'm pleased with the concept of both but need better prints!

And thanks for the discussion! Is anyone else trying new methods?

kbutts
06-26-2008, 02:02 PM
I think I had something different in mind when I mentioned contrast for the birds. I was thinking to have the same pink/purple background only with an area (oval) of say... yellow for where the bird's body will be. This oval of color could be done with paint/ink or paper (glued on). So that when you print, the glue lines (outline of the bird's body) will surround the yellow spot. I hope that makes sense. It's always easier to show people what I mean rather than to say it in words. I am planning to use this technique with my easy cut prints. Maybe I'll work on them more today so that I can post them soon.

So, yes, if I printed the glue bird on white paper, for example, like I did the goldfish, there would be contrast. I'm probably going to reprint both the bird and the fish. I'm pleased with the concept of both but need better prints!

And thanks for the discussion! Is anyone else trying new methods?

So, shall I sign you up? We're a fun bunch!

I gotcha. Sort of like doing a multi-plate print like this one (http://www.flickr.com/photos/50311581@N00/2265293200/in/set-72057594063322278/) (here's a photo of the plates (http://www.flickr.com/photos/50311581@N00/2265731122/in/set-72157603833184644/)), but without multiple plates. Yes?

I'm thinking that I may do a reduction print (http://world.std.com/~deanb/zgg/reduction_block_1.html) for this but I may use that technique for my next print swap, though. Oh yeah, I'm going to be posting a new print exchange in the next few days. :)

Yup, that right Zhen; like the ladybug. Thanks for the link on reduction printing. I have done a lot of different types of printmaking but I don't think I have ever done a reduction print. Either that or I just didn't do enough of then to remember the process really well. It would be really cool if we could do intaglio prints. Do you know if they make materials or kits that would not require the harsh acid? Perhaps I could use some of my old plates or even cut down some of the prints I have already made from them! I have to go find them and see if they have any potential.

Grrrrr! Nothing's really working out the way I want it to!!! I wanted to try something other than handcarved stamps but I'm not getting good enough print quality! I guess I'll either do some more stamps, drop, or send my best efforts and you're welcome to send them back to me if they aren't good enough! I'm getting frustrated!:9

I attended a wonderful workshop at the Art Institute of Chicago yesterday. It was all about printmaking. I learned quite a few things and got to try a new-to-me technique (dry point on plexiglass printed on chine-colle style papers). It opened my mind to new possibilities. So today I stopped by Home Depot and got some plexiglass so that I can try to make more (ATC size of course) at home. I happen to have a small press at school that I might try to borrow. Otherwise I may just roll over it with the car:jiggy:. It was so much fun learning a new process, but I made a novice mistake and wrote the words forward on the plate so they, of course, are backwards in the print :embarrassed:.

Here is the plate and print for the workshop.
Sorry the contrast isn't better on the plate and the shadow of the line may confuse it a little.

Kbutts, I make plexiglass drypoints as well as Etchings!
Etching is my concentration in my major (painting and printmaking).
You can get akua color inks that are soy based that clean up with soap and water and attempt making drypoints and hand printing with those.
Also plexiglass can get brittle, there is another type of plastic glass called lexan (i might be spelling that wrong) that handles more pressure through a press.

Lily, You can also try out matte medium on plexiglass to print some funky textures :)

Another really cool low toxic printmaking method is gelatin monotypes..I'm in the maryland printmakers and there is woman who teaches this technique, here is the link the explains it:

http://www.marylandprintmakers.org/newsletter.asp?id=230

I also have some links on handmade printing presses if anyone is interested.

I realize I didn't explain this too well. Paint with acrylic medium on plexiglass. Let dry. Ink! Print! ;)

Sounds interesting. What kind of ink should a newbie in printmaking (with low income and little space to work in!) try? :err:

What kind of ink should a newbie in printmaking (with low income and little space to work in!) try? :err:

I use water based ink at home. I wouldn't recommend starting off with oil based inks if you don't want to deal with solvents (the fumes are awful, you need good ventilation and be able to dispose of them properly).

If you don't want to spend a lot of money, your best bet is definitely speedball. The water based doesn't stain counters and it cleans up with soap and water. They also have an oil based but because I'm biased to other oil based inks I think it's crap.:err:
I keep a whole drawer of their water based inks at home, I use them with with my block prints.

My favorite oil based inks(for etching) are graphic chemical and charbonelle. Charbonelle is pricey, but if you get way into printmaking it's worth it. The pigment in it prints beautifully. Graphic Chemical's vine black and blue black ink is what I use on my drypoints and etchings. ;) Graphic chemical also has a fantastic ink medium, I believe it's just called gel medium...it comes in a white plastic jar.

For lithography, I use Daniel Smith ink. It's thick and harder to work with. But, I rarely make lithographs.

I clean up ink with simple green, you can buy it at any hardware store it cleans up grease and oil like no other cleaner and it's pretty cheap.

I hope my rant on inks is helpful, I do suppose I went a tidbit overboard but printmaking is pretty much my life. ;)

mynameisJenn
07-02-2008, 06:57 PM
Oh and I completely forgot about akua color inks!
They are oil based, but are based with soy so they clean up with soap and water.
They take a little while to get the hang of but they are fun to play with.

You can check them out here,

Thanks Jenn. I didn't realize you do so much printing. I really enjoyed printmaking in collage and wish I could do more of it with my students. They are just too young and impatient or clumsy for most processes. I might try the dry point with my art club (5th - 8th grade) though.

This is a heads up for everyone in this swap. I'll be out of town between 3 August and 9 August. I may be checking this site during my vacation but I sort of doubt it. So, if you need my address, it would probably be best to request it before 3 August, and I won't update the received list during that week.

Heh. Don't be too jealous. ;) Most of them involve driving an hour south to see my in-laws (whom I like), weeding two very large gardens during the day, and then drinking and eating too much at night....hmmm...I guess that all my vacations tend to be bacchanals. What can I say? I married a Franco-Manitoban.

AND, speaking of all my vacations. In my earlier heads up, I forgot to mention that I'm going to be out of town this weekend too -- from 24 July to 27 July. Mononcle's turning fifty, which means that there's a weekend-long party at the cottage for him. I will be without internet at the cottage. Leading up to Thursday, I'll be running around quite a bit. I will respond to PMs and posts but my response time will be slow. Thanks for understanding.

Hope these are acceptable. I used Soleil paints and masked them with leaves and grasses, but the sun kept playing hide and seek, so only the one really took well .... that's the first one. The others were the less successful ones, that I then painted the grass, leaves etc and printed with those.
It's done on silk laminated onto a plastic, that's supposed to peel off, but I haven't managed to do that (which is why it isn't embroidered, that was the original idea) So will send them off and hope, they're right and arrive on time!

Thanks Lagaz! I played around some more with something I'd done for the B&W Swap by adding color underneath - actually I was trying to coverup something that didn't work out the first time. I thought the colored inks would cover up the photocopy the way the B&W did and reveal spots of color where I removed ink from the plate. But the colored inks were just too transparent and I went over the area again with black ink. I agree, they did turn out rather creepy. :~]

I dropped the returns in several mailboxes between home and the gym this morning! Woohoo!

This was a great swap to host and I hope that you all love your returns.

I'd appreciate it if you posted to this thread when your returns arrive, but if I don't hear from you, I'll assume that all is well on your end.

And if you're feeling up to it, I'm sure that the other participants would love to know who received their cards via a post here, a PM, or a rep point. It's completely up to you, though.

Can't wait to see my returns for this swap!

Let's see, we're in the same country, so it should only take two weeks for your returns to arrive. ;)

mynameisJenn-- I had remembered that you had left a post about build-it-yourelf presses. I found it this morning. Thank you for sharing those links. :notworthy: I'd really like to build one. Although I have an excellent litho press --an it's great for lithos and monoprints-- it's more work than I want to go through for the results. I usually want something much more direct and less time-consuming than this litho press. My dad, who is also a painter/pintmaker, has a beautiful etchng press in his studio -- which I sometimes use, but --although we get along wonderfully-- our personal brands of OCD clash when I handle his felt blankets or other accoutrement of printmaking differently than he does. (Yes, I've taken my own over there, but like the old SNL's Anna Rosanna Danna usd to say, "It's always something."

Anyway. . . I'd love a small, yet sturdy, little press that could even be taken to demos. In a future theme swap of printmaking, maybe I'll be able to share some tips on my self-built press. . .

. . .and I do look forward to building and using it; and right now I'm really looking forward to seeing what little prints I receive from this awesome group!

ArtandSoul, I'm planning on making a nice hand barren for hand printing so it'll be easier to print at home rather than the studio.

I starting works on new drypoint plates yesterday and I'm working on some new woodcuts as well :)

I'm most content when I'm making art. I, also, like to have several artworks in progress at the same time (as with your current drypoint plates and new woodcuts).

Would you please think about sharing instructions for making the hand barren, and also any tips that you learn as you're making it? Sometimes I use a red, plastic Speedball barren that has a blonde, wood handle --but frequently the bowl of a worn and beautiful old silverplated serving spoon-- for small things, like the soft block prints for this swap.

It would feel good to make my own barren for these small pieces and small editions.

The one I'm planning on making is a piece of flat round wood with a piece of leather over the wood and then reeds on top of that.
