Signup date– WE ARE FULL!
First Mail Date - June 20th
Number of participants – six, USA only
It's a Wrap!
Please read carefully. This swap will require a COMMITMENT of time, effort and funds for mailing and supplies. (Using your existing art supply stash is highly encouraged! Art supply hoarders unite!)
For this swap you will be part of an artistic collaboration for a scroll art doll.
You are tasked with supplying a "starter" stump doll. (It does not have to be made entirely of cloth but please consider mailing costs.) Each other artist will make a scroll panel in the theme of your doll on their turn.
Provide a theme / back story about your doll and a brief list of dos and don't your panels. Try to be as open to artistic interpretation as possible!
The rules:
THERE ARE NO WITHDRAWS!!!!!
You must adhere to a monthly mailing schedule.
You must be a member in good standing. No negative or neutral iTrader for 3 months. Positive iTrader of 15+ is required.
You must, just be willing to commit time and effort to doing your very best work to contribute to a completed doll that will be cherished by it's owner.
You must send me your name, address, email address and phone number and any other way to contact you that you can think of. I WILL find a way to track you down if you go MIA.
You must stay active in the thread....post your progress, stop in and say "hi", be social. We will be together here for a while. Let's make it fun and friendly!
Postage & Mailing:
You will need some sort of mailing box that is sturdy enough to survive opening and remailing to subsequent artists. We will decide, as a group, maximum size of dolls/boxes. Sorry it is unlikely that a padded envelope will be sufficient.
Dolls need to be mailed according to the monthly travel plan that will be provided after the group is full.

THEME - “Millicent’s Art Gallery” - Millicent is my doll’s name, and she runs a successful art gallery. Millicent can be a bit haughty, but she really knows her stuff, as evidenced by your wonderful art in this gallery. For your scroll panel (6”x6”), please create “paintings on the wall”. There can be 2 paintings on your panel or a grouping of more in various sizes.
DO’s - Please contribute a variety of styles and genres (landscapes, florals, abstracts, etc.) done in fabric markers, colored pencil, and/or acrylic paints (Textile Medium helps). Each painting should include a different attractive frame. Feel free to use my fabric trims as frames, using mostly stitching with minimal glue to reduce bulk. Do miter corners so it looks like a real frame. Just painting a decorative frame on is fine too!
DON’Ts: No violent or nude subjects. No bulky embellishments, which could make the scroll difficult to roll. Have fun!
NOTE - I will provide panel fabric, and I will attach panels when doll is returned to me.

THEME- Bee Creative-
5"X5" panels.
Use my fabric as your backing. Other than that pretty much anything goes. Think of my panels as a mixed media chunky page. Fabrics, fibers, beads, paint, ink. Any and/or all are great!
I will attach all panels when I get the doll back.

thank you for the doll pics, Kelly. I'm still not sure how the "scroll" part works or what that looks like.
Essy:
Theme: Princess Prim
Princess Prim has diamonds, but cannot imagine much color or themes beyond her Kingdom of Prim. Show her the beauty in any color or theme, except please no scary, horror, dark, or adult themes as these would give this timid princess a scare. Themes like animals, insects, art, steampunk, whimsical, rustic & prim as you see it, etc...be as eclectic as you wish with your scroll piece. Princess Prim looks forward to wrapping herself up in the scroll made with thoughtfulness and love just for her.
4"x4" panels, I will attach all panels when I get doll back
Do's- Any color and theme, except...
Don'ts- No scary, horror, dark, or adult themes
Please feel free to look at the themes on my profile page if you need ideas. Have fun!

Millicent's hair is giving me fits! It is red/auburn colored embroidery floss done in a high chignon. Arrange and glue, arrange and glue, etc. I do think it will work though. Then I still have to attach head to torso cylinder piece. QUESTION: Are we supposed to contribute the first panel of our own theme, kind of like an example of our description? Or not, just do the doll itself?
theweavershand
06-07-2019, 08:53 PM
Thanks so much for sending the pattern, Kelly!
I second CiCi's question about doing the first panel ourselves and also have a question about the panels. Do we send the cut panels with the doll and sew them together later or do we make a long scroll, attach it to the doll and have people work on it like that?
CiCiCreates
06-07-2019, 09:12 PM
I personally am planning to cut 6” squares for my panels, and send them with my doll, along with extra fabric in case artists want to practice on it with various media. Then I plan to sew them together when they come back to me, then stitch the long scroll piece to the doll torso ( for some reason, I hate calling it a “stump” - lol).
theweavershand
06-07-2019, 09:54 PM
so...if the scroll part is separate or being sent as separate panels, is it still necessary to mail the doll with it?
I'm sorry im having such a hard time grasping this concept.

06-07-2019, 10:04 PM
Understandable, theweavershand! A few of us had quite a few PMs back and forth regarding how this might work! It’s a good question, and the only real reason I know of is that both Kelly and I just wanted to see and feel everyone’s doll. Sorry to answer for you, Kelly, but I just happened to be on here when the question was asked.

Are you still doing the Indian Garden theme? Maybe it could be a name related to that?
Just a bit confused...I thought we were just sending the doll so each player would get a feel of what they would like to do for their scroll piece for that particular doll. I didn't know we also had to make our scroll piece to send with the doll? I was planning on doing my scroll piece when I received her back along with the scroll pieces from the other players.

Yes, I think that was my question in Post #10, and Theweavershand too. I think Bluesky did her own first panel. We’ll have to get Kelly’s answer on this, maybe it’s up to each artist....

Wow....seemed like I was only gone for a minute.....;)
We are mailing the doll. I am mailing fabric squares for each player to use as the backing for their panel for my doll. I attached a 'starter' panel to the side seam of my doll. Even tho it's still a WIP I will take a picture of my Bee and post it tomorrow so you all can get a general idea. But the scroll is your preference...separate panels of one long piece where everyone gets a section for arting. Just list of all in your dos and don't s.
That being said, does everyone think they are good with the 15th as a mailing date of do we need to push it back?
CiCiCreates
06-07-2019, 11:27 PM
Thanks for the answers! Maybe push date back to the 20th?
I thought the same thing theweavershand (post #13) I understand now it's just the doll that will be mailed, so each player gets a feel of what to do with with the scroll piece they make for that player's doll.
Thanks CiCiCreates and thank you notinkansas for the updates :)
I'm still good for the 15th, but I'm good for when all the player's are ready :)
Has the box size we use to mail been decided upon?

If everyone else is ok with first mail date being the 15th, I can probably swing it. My doll and scroll base are almost finished. Her head and hair were so involved (she will also have pearl earrings and wire-rimmed glasses) that I may leave her torso part plain. I figure the scroll will eventually cover it anyway. Just have to finish the scroll base, attach the head, and then create my own gallery wall panel.

Say hello to Nandini(bringer of joy) and my first panel. My theme is folk artist who loves the look of religious icons and texiles from India. I was inspired by the purchase of a Indian tunic that I used to make the doll. Also the panel inspiration is from the Angels & icons workshop at gwenlafleur.com (sorry unable to attach images or link). Please look at her work. Love it! Love it! I will enclose textile scraps from India and most likely panel backs as well. Be colorful be bright! Be inspired! Seriously I truly love the detail of texiles from India. Gold trims, beads , sequins etc....please add elements from the garden especially flowers. Have fun!

Bluesky, in India animals like the elephant, the peacock are considered icons, would an elephant or peacock be okay to use as the icon/image for your panel?
Bluesky
06-09-2019, 08:48 PM
Essy are you thinking the actually animal as a whole or human with animal head? I'm asking as I saw the artwork from Gwen's workshop and went whoa! So like a gansh?(the Hindi god with elephant head) I would be fine with....the animal as part of the scene...yes..... as the main "person" if you would need an unique interpretation as I saw this project as a Byzantine religious icon meets India mash up.

06-09-2019, 09:34 PM
Just checked out Gwen LaFleur's site. Once I navigated through to the workshop pictures, I was amazed!
Bluesky, I now see what you saw in gwenlafluer's site under angels and icons. I was looking at the wrong art work on her site, still beautiful but couldn't grasp what you were talking about. The angels and icons she made are really cool, and colorful! It's pretty much an image of a human with wings and lots of pretty decor and embellishments...I like gwen's interpretation too...now I understand ;)

06-09-2019, 11:07 PM
I looked at that site too, earlier in the day. I really think it will be fun! Our little haughty Millicent is proving true to the personality I created for her. I was very frustrated during most of the day getting her to cooperate while I tried to attach her head and neck to the base part (yeah, it’s all her fault, right?). Anyway, we got over that challenge and things are looking up now! Next is her earrings, glasses, and scarf. THEN I can work on my own panel!

I have a theme...Miss Kitty Fish Sticks Pockets Full of Love.
This is a cat-themed doll. It will be traveling with a completed scroll. Ultimately the scroll will have pockets filled with things she loves. Artists are asked to put their art on pockets and attach their pocket to the scroll. Please make something to put in the pocket. I think hearts would be sweet, but it could be anything a Miss Kitty Fish Sticks might like, ie a fish or a kitten.
I will be sending her along with bits of things, please feel free to plunder whatever tickles your fancy. You do not need to specifically use the bits on MKFS. Painted or sewn or 2-d pocket fillers are fine.
Good Karma extra credit for sequins. I will have pocket dimension size later this week.

When I was quilting, we learned a little tip for painting on fabric. I used it when writing info on my labels and also for marker/paint images on individual blocks. If you iron a square of freezer paper, glossy side against fabric, it kind of stabilizes and holds the fabric taut, making it easier to paint on. It just takes a few quick passes across the paper (on fabric) with a hot iron, do your art, then it just peels off when finished. I have prepared all of my “traveling “ panels this way for everyone’s convenience. Again, it just peels off if you don’t want to use it this way, but I am used to it and find it easier.

Miss Kitty Fish Sticks: once she comes home I will tie her scroll shut. Looks like the pockets are small, 4 1/2 inches wide and 4 inches tall. If they are too difficult to attach on 3 sides, please attach on 2 parallel sides. Pockets should be sewn onto the blue swirly side of the panel rather than the quilted side.

Love MKFS!
I would very much appreciate an idea of the dimensions of a box I should look for to mail my doll in, she is under 9". I bought a xs box at post office that ships by weight which is the least cost, but it's still too big, any ideas? Thanks in advance.
CiCiCreates
06-13-2019, 06:09 PM
I think the Medium size Flat Rate box is 11”x8 1/2”x 5 1/2” deep. I think mine would work ok with that. I’m sure I would still need to use packing materials to take up some space, but probably not a lot.

Okay...i think my doll is done. Lets see if i can explain what i have in mind. Ive named her Grandma Gladys, after my grandma, and the theme is Homespun Wisdom. I was inspired by memories of being a kid in the summer. Trips to visit the grandparents, snapping beans and eating fresh corn from the garden, long hot days, rolling in the cool grass, fields full of flowers, outdoor concerts, trips to the pool, and more. Simple pleasures, simple times, simple folk art style.
The scroll will become her "apron". I am sending 4 X 5 inch squares of muslin for each of you to decorate. I will finish and connect them when they return to me. You may use paint, pen, fabric, stitching, etc. to create a panel in a simple folk art/sampler style. You will also include a bit of homespun wisdom that has meaning or memories for you.
I am including a finished panel to give you an idea of what I have in mind. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. I hope I explained it well enough.

That darned Millicent almost didn't accept one of my paintings! She can be somewhat intimidating, but I think she knew what a struggle I was having, and how hard I was trying, so she relented. That said, my panel is almost ready to show (along with Millicent).
Introducing Princess Prim with her "diamonds". Please don't worry if some of her "diamonds" fall off, they shouldn't, but if they do I'll glue them back on when she returns or I have others to replace them with.
The ones on her head are sewn on so they should be okay.

If you want to do only two paintings to a panel, that would be a lot easier. Please just do whatever you like! My
"Carol's Miro" and the portrait were done n acrylics with some fabric marker. The floral was done in markers and colored pencil, and the sunset was entirely colored pencil. Just so you can see what the various media look like on fabric.

Essy, I just want to be sure I understand what Princess Prim wants on her scroll. She wants color and beauty, right? Does that mean anything that I would consider beautiful? I have something in mind which you could say is “beauty in a whimsical style”.
Bluesky
06-23-2019, 02:38 PM
Yeah! Have fun Kelly!
CiCi, yes, please do what you would consider beautiful and "beauty in a whimsical style" sounds wonderful! Have fun and thank you!

I believe it is in Jacksonville, FL today. So probably opa locks tomorrow then me on Wednesday in Cutler Bay(yes part of Miami)
Art_junkie, a question before I sew pocket onto scroll, I noticed at the opening/beginning of the scroll there's a loose square piece of gold fabric, do you want me to start my pocket below that? Or can I put my pocket at the start of scroll?
art_junkie
06-27-2019, 11:17 AM
I have no clue what the gold fabric might be. Sorry I did not leave any secret hints.
Please start a pocket where you want, remembering that there are 4 other pockets in addition to yours. Heck in the middle would work too....
Okay, sounds good! Will get to work on it, thank you!

I will take photos of pocket and toys tomorrow and post them to thread, unless we're not supposed to?

Bluesky, I'm embarrassed to admit I hadn't heard that song before, googled the lyrics and then watched it on YouTube. It is very catchy, upbeat, and the dancers were great! I'm sure Millicent loves it - it's one of those things that people would never assume about her.
Okay, great, thanks for the info it helps me to know what to do ;) I will mail it by 20th.
First photo is attached decorated pocket, second photo is MKFS toys a fabric wrapped stick with a dangling heart and bell to bat at with her paws, bell doesn’t make sound sorry, on gold stretchy string with her initials MKFS and a Kitty doll with velcro paws holding her two little fish sticks, that she loves! Third photo is with kitty doll arms open to see detail sequins, drew heart strings in her pocket, and a robot in the other pocket :)
I think MKFS likes her gifts :)
A note I did stuff kitty doll, her fish sticks and fabric heart with minimal stuffing so as to stay as flat as possible so it's not bulky.

After a month of waiting for a downstairs apartment we finally got to move yesterday. Today we found out that my husband's insurance company is unwilling to pay for anymore inpatient therapy so i have to really scramble to get the new apartment suitable and safe for him to come home on Saturday, weeks before we were expecting him to. I also have to make time to get some quick training from them on how I can help him. This came so completely out of the blue that none of us were prepared at all.
Needless to say, I will try to begin working on the lovely little art gallery as soon as I can but I may be late mailing for this round.
Theweavershand, I'm so sorry, my prayers are with you and your husband.
