View Full Version : Anyone up for a ROUND ROBIN of ephemera, etc?

I'll start a priority flat rate mailer (the envelope one), mail it to person #2, whatever they take out they must replace...meaning if they like and take 7 items, they must put in 7 similar items, then it goes to person 3, and so on til it comes back to me.
show of hands, who thinks they would like to play in this....USA only, We are at 10 players I will accept 2 more, in the next 3 days. Then I'll be closing it to further sign-ups. Please see post #26

How much is the postage on this mailer??
ScramperSue
06-04-2008, 03:13 AM
about $5 it is a 9 x 12 thin chipboard mailer...
whatever fits in there for the 5 bucks, and they are free from the PO, so I will make out the Priority labels for all involved and include them, and the order they go in.
Then each person would be responsible for getting a new mailer from the PO, and switch the items to the new mailer, slap the new label on, and send it on it's way. :D

OK, I was going to use one of the FLAT flat-rate priority mailers ( made for like important papers etc) $4.90
it has been suggested that we go for the flat rate BOX, and the cheapest one is $9.80.
Show of hands how many are willing to lay out $10.45 (with delivery confirmation) to ship it on to the next person???

As long as it's full of stuff, that's fine with me. I actually have several sitting around from when I used to do scrapbooking swaps. The more ephemra to choose from the better (says the girl who is trying to weed out her own stuff).

btw I'm up for either envie or box. box sounds more fun, but i'll go with the majority ;)
btw there are two sizes of the $9.80 flat rate boxes... the 11-7/8" x 3-3/8" x 13-5/8" one and the 11" X 8.5" X 5.5" one. if we go the way of the box, would you let us know which one you'd prefer us to use? (that way I can get one from the p.o. ahead of time ;) )

I can't resist this.
I'm up for the large envelope over the box, but will participate no matter what!
This is my first sign-up here, but I've been active on Nervousness and xpx for a couple of years or more.
Any guidelines about how soon we need to send it on its way?
Thanks for letting me in,

OK, we are at 10. I am going to get this going in about a week.
I need the following from EVERYONE.
PLEASE subscribe to this thread and check it at least weekly.
a vote on box approx $11vs envelope approx $5
whether or not you work on 4X4s, greeting cards, scrapbooks, rolos and or other paper crafts besides ATCs
I think I have most of your addresses already if I do NOT I'll PM you.
If we go with the BOX I will be requiring a Phone number that you can be reached at (in case too much time has passed since it reached you) this is to protect my initial investment, as well as those that come after me, and before you. You will have up to 5 days to turn this box over. PLEASE do your best to stick to this time frame. Any questions? now is the time to ask.
***I will be making out all the Priority mailing labels as well as the delivery confirmation slips. they will be IN ORDER in an envelope along with a list of the players in order contained inside the package when you receive it. THIS MUST BE ADHERED TO. no changing of the order, and you MUST USE the label and delivery confirmation that I have enclosed. Having any second thoughts? now is the time to back out
I am not trying to be a hard nose, I am just making this as safe for our players as possible.
The USPS has rules against liquid and hazardous materials...BUT if you want to include gel mediums or gesso or paints. it is OK---just DOUBLE bag* that item. Please do NOT send anything like turpentine, or mineral spirits etc. If you send anything fragile( clay faces, seashells etc) please wrap them individually in some small bubble wrap
* by double bag I mean: place the gesso or whatever in one zipper bag INSIDE of another zipper bag...OR... wrap the bottle WELL in saran wrap, and then place inside a zipper bag.

Here's my vote: I can do a box or envie whichever the others want to do, but a box would be my first choice because you could get other stuff in there. Right now I'm just doing atc's, inchies, twinchies, mixed media, and jewelry. I can use just about anything and can replace with the same. Sue, I think you have my phone no., if not pm me. Hey folks, I'm ready, Let's Roll!!!

I prefer an envie cause of finances, but I will go along with whatever the majority is. I am doing ATC's, chunkies, inchies, altered cabinet cards, and greeting cards (for my etsy site). Shall I PM you with my number? Can you post the order that this is going in? Thanks!

06-17-2008, 01:08 PM
I'd rather the envelope, in terms of cost; but can swing the box if that's what others want...if I'm before or after thoughtcrimes in the list, it'll be easier, as we're geographically close, and can hand off the box, and share the cost. If that's ok...
I do all sorts of projects; quilting, altered art, books, chunkies, and am starting to do assemblage and larger pieces.

I like the box idea, but will do either.
besides atcs I do deco books, inchies, and altered art (i'll alter anything if it sits still long enough ;) hehe). I don't scrapbook anymore and only make a greeting card or two a year.
thanks for organizing and making out the labels! (the labels will make it ALOT easier!)

I also vote for the box as first choice, envie as second. definitely try to put me in line with frogwings- that will both speed up the process and reduce cost. I do all sorts of things, so any size shape or thing is good within the box itself.
THanks for organizing this, it will be lots of fun I am sure.

I'd prefer the box, but am ok with the Envie. Maybe those who can can included some extra stamps (like the 94 cent kind) to help out for people...not to fully pay for postage, but maybe to lower it a couple bucks (as a struggling student I know a couple $ can make the difference).

note the dates and put aside your mailing $$ or whatever, cause there will be no leeway for the "up to 5 days"...it really shouldn't be in anyone's possession for more than 3 days (as I know you will ALL be ripping into this box the minute it arrives, LOL)...but S**T happens so I am giving extra time...PLEASE do not use it if you don't need to-We are all anxious to get this :)
ScramperSue
06-25-2008, 01:06 PM
ok, it is priority (about 2-3 days) and each person has up to 5 days before sending it out (in a NEW priority box--they are FREE and it will be each of your responsibilty to get the new one before mailing it off--pack it well) so roughly figure 8 days per person is about how long til it will before it gets to you, understand?
remember if you take out 20 items...you needs to replace 20 items (like for like/ value for value) I do NOT mean every little feather or "little cut out collage image" use your judgement...if there are 5 little white feathers in the "misc. bag" and you want all of them...take them and replace it with something equivalent like a 5" x 1" braided leather strip, or a bookmark tassle or a little baggie of seed beads or whatever...I think you all will be ok :)
JONI...you are last, so there should be one left of each of any items that say "1(or 2) for all 9 of you" (metallic ricrac, some ribbons, stamped envelopes etc)
it is ok if there are more than 1(or2) left, it just means someone along the way didn't want theirs...please feel free to take the "leftovers" of those items. BUT...if there were no items in the box that say "1(or 2) for all 9 of you" ...I want to know.
thanks ladies!

Sue should share her packing tips!
ScramperSue
06-29-2008, 04:05 PM
well first. you really should start with a fresh box ( since I over-stuffed that one) LOL
then pack it the way i had it---the 12 x 12 stuff on the bottom then the publications, then the fabric(you'll have to spread this around--corners to corners etc) otherwise you'll end witha lump in the middle, and then do the same for the other bas of stuff etc---ending with the ephemera and postal envie.
did you take one each of the things that were marked one each(2 each also)???? this will make a hugs difference as the box gets passed.
I also recommend sitting on the box for a few minutes :)
PS----the "disney" ribbons that I did one each on...that is kind of a gift. :)
rockstarsgirl
06-29-2008, 04:50 PM
Yeah. I told my mom that I was gonna sit on it and she was gonna tape it lol. I'm sure I'll get it all back in there. *Bias tape in several colors
*4x4 coasters

Thanks Kary! I used this stuff called 'Glossy Accents' from Inkssentials. It seals the tops while also being slightly raised. It's about $5 or so. I hear Diamond Glaze does the same thing. The Inkssentials brand also has a crackle version I want to try!
ScramperSue
07-07-2008, 01:27 AM
glossy accents is pretty much identical to: diamond glaze
Stampin up's Crystal effects, and Sakura's 3D lacquer
rockstarsgirl
07-07-2008, 01:37 AM
My favorite is diamond glaze. I've tried the crystal effects and I don't like it that much. I tried Tim Holtz crackle glaze (I think Ranger Industries) and I don't like it. If you use it on a picture (real) it pulls the top layer off. If the image is too thin and you try and reshape it and flatten it out, it breaks apart and the crackle falls off. Is there something I should be doing?
ScramperSue
07-07-2008, 01:53 AM
ha, see we are all different.
I like crystal effects and sakura 3D lacquer better than diamond glaze, and they both are a little less expensive.

I like glossy gel medium or acrylic lacquer (although the latter can be a bit tacky for awhile). I'm just always curious as to what everyone else uses.
Don't know what to tell ya rockstarsgirl, I don't use the crackle glaze (yet ;) ) but i loooove the crackle paint! lol

I use plaid's crackle medium :) I like it...first you paint the one color, then the medium then the 2nd color...and watch the magic happen! WOOT!

Hey all. I am a tad worried. I picked up the box yesterday and the postal lady told me that all the seams had to meet in order to eligible for the flat rate price. Otherwise I could be looking at shelling out $40+ to send. I don't know if I got a persnickety worker or what cause when the box arrived the seams were not meeting! Everything was well taped down and all but there was definitely a bit of a gap. I am gonna try taking it to a different post office and hope for the best. Should go out tomorrow! Keep your fingers crossed!
ScramperSue
07-08-2008, 04:40 PM
yes you got a overly picky clerk. the seams should be at least close (that is why my fat ass sat on it , and then I nealed on knee on it while push 2 sides together to have my daughter tape it) we got the top 2 seams within about 3/4 of an inch of each other. If the seams are waaay apart, then they will not take it for the priority flat rate price. It sounds to me like some extra large items were added.
if they won't go for the flat rate, here is one suggestion:
take it back home completely empty it
take the box apart...right down to the side seam that keeps the box together, then turn it inside out, retape it together and send it parcel post. it might be a few bucks more than the 12.95, and it may take up to 2 weeks to get to the next person--
other than that I have no idea what to tell you.
Like i said we got it closed, obviously Nicole had it closed. Perhaps ask a neighbor to help you tape it up, so you can get the seams a little closer.
rockstarsgirl
07-08-2008, 05:38 PM
Yeah, mine had a lump in it and they had to ask the "boss," but there was no problem. If anything just pick up a roll of their priority tape and tape the seams up. You can't really see through that tape, so they wouldn't know.

I'm thinking...maybe if it won't all fit, you (whoever is next, etc.; I'm hoping Kati's postal cutie is overly cautious, and it will go through fine) could remove the excess, or take what they want to add that won't fit, and send it directly to ScramperSue ... for her own use, or so's she can start a box for Round Two??!!! If nothing else, the extras could come out and be sent on separately by parcel post so that at least *most* of it would still go at the priority rate?

07-15-2008, 12:29 AM
*whew* Well, it's packed... and after the third or fourth time packing I came up with a good system... for all of those after me, put in several layers of flat stuff... then all the small misc stuff... then the rest of the flat stuff. That way, when you go to close it, you don't have a bunch of little items trying to worm their way out ;) (I also tried to make sure the stuff I took out was smaller than the stuff I put in, HOWEVER that doesn't mean what I put in is any less valuable! I do think y'all will like it! ;) lol)
I had my daughter and her friend helping me (they called it 'Operation Heavy' LOL). My power is out at the moment, and so we were trying to get this thing packed in the dark, with one holding the flashlight on the box and another holding it on the stuff going in... So it really shouldn't have suprised me when after FINALLY getting the box precariously shut and taped up good (edges matching believe it or not)... that I realized I had forgotten two little items and the MAILING STUFF! ACK! Soooo, That stuff is going in a flat rate priority envie. It should arrive at the same time. Sue... PLEASE PLEASE don't ask me to open that box again! lol I'll gladly shell out the extra 5 bucks plus delivery confirmation so as not to reopen that box! hehehe I'll PM you the delivery confirmation number, Sue, so you'll have the extra one.
Anyways... the box is going in the mail in the morning as promised. ;)

it is to be the #1 box (12.95)
and I am NOT saying there is a problem it could just be a matter of people's tastes or what they craft with.
I was just putting out a gentle reminder.
also want to remind everyone that there are items in the box that say 1 for each of you or 2 for each of you or 1 of each for each of you. please take these items UNLESS you really will never use them... the disney ribbons (actually blanket binding) is a gift from me to all of you...you each get one of each of the disney ribbons...unless of course you will never use them. and i also included a SU technique book for each of you, those were also a gift. :)

yes while it is true, that you are only getting from the people before you, you are giving to the people after you, and it is also a 'circle' kind of swap, where everyone is dependent on everyone to do their part...i think it is more fair and certainly easier to not miss anyone if we all just give to all...that way no one is accidently forgeotten or missed.
I welcome discussion on this, if there are more of you who want to not leave iTRADERS for everyone...let's talk about it.

My computer is down and I've been offline for quite awhile...I'm using my daughter's laptop, and had composed most of a message, but lost it because I'm unfamiliar with the keyboard....bahhhhh. Anyway. Yeah! I have the box!! Pam and I are still in the process of going through everything, and getting ready to repack. I'm hoping it'll go postal again by Thursday at the latest...by my calculations, still within the time allotted for two of us...
As to the concern about the quality of the contents, I don't think anyone needs to worry. We've had no problem finding good stuff to take out, and have lots of good stuff to add as well. The sheer quantity of goodies is breathtaking! We've tried to take some but not all of most things; some of course are one of a kind, and those we're trying to replace with similar, and equal value, other things...
There are still.... lots of ribbons, lace and other fibers (added rainbow-y flat stuff, some pearls-on-a-string, some silver cord etc), lots of ATC blanks, 4x4 blanks (added some handpainted ones) and inchie blanks, some mica pieces, skeleton leaves (added more of a different kind), buttons and beads; we've put in slide mounts, and tickets, and blank notecards for arting on...more cardstock, fancy fibers, etc, etc...

Katilady, I chose the 'possess' scrabble tile and frogwings took 'dream'. They are lovely!
There were no artchix collage sheets left by the time we got the box, so I put in some Altered Pages ones from my collection. I love the player piano paper, and so much other great stuff! I would post pictures, but that would ruin the surprise for those who have not yet had their chance to play. I am just anxious for the weekend so I can spend some quality time playing with my new stuff.
Next, off to KYSunflower, then to Joni, then back to Sue, who will hopefully get lots of great new stuff at the end.

THE BOX is packed, sealed and set to be delivered to the Post Office; ready or not, here it comes!!
It's taped on every seam, and then some; And yes, sitting-on was required. Although sitting on and taping at the same time is tricksy, at best. I would suggest from now on that, before sending out, you acquire several small children...these should be friendly with one another, as they will have to be stacked on top of one another, on the box, in order to hold it closed, while you wrestle with the packing tape. Don't worry if fingers or toes get taped in. Just send the kid along with the box; it's easier than starting over. I'm sure a few stamps on their foreheads will get them back to you in fine shape.
Oh yeah. And really, it's not necessary to include the cat and the kitchen sink...(ok, I admit; the cat was my idea)
But seriously. Everyone seems to have been more than generous, and there's a lot of great stuff in there. This has been a great rr; very quick and very well organized. Thank you, Sue, and all the rest of you too!

I've been gathering stuff this afternoon, and I have a question. Can we put in images, paper things for collage? Like I once bought hundreds of cancelled eurpoean stamps(could be russian) from a guy on yahoo auctions.

Sue, since there is such an interest in this, how would you feel about someone else hosting another one as well as you doing one? So more people can be involved etc? Just a thought. I'd be willing and Shotgun (RSG) offered as well.

that's ok... i glue down anything that stands still long enough hehe ;)
I was using my melting pot the other day, and some kinda bug landed in the cooling UTEE and managed to get sunk in somehow. I now have a little piece of UTEE with a bug that looks like a piece of amber. Couldn't do that if I'd tried! LOL!

It will probably be at least 2 weeks until it goes up. Don't worry, we will give everyone ample warning for when it starts and their position on the list as well as the next person in line. Right now, we're just doing sign ups.
two weeks for what? sign ups for what?
if you were referring to kysunflower's post, the current box goes to her next. ;)

You could make a pendant out of it, Kary! A friend at our singles group was teasing me one night during a supper we were having - she handed me a round hambone about 1/4" thick and laughed and said "do you want this, you could make some jewelry out of it" - I did - Someone bought it!!!! I had the last laugh.
Oh, and if I can't get it to stay glued down, there's always my trusty hammer and nails!!

I'm thinking the box will get to KY today or tomorrow; was just checking the thread. Two or three days from Friday the 8th makes it Sunday (which I'm thinking doesn't count with the P.O.) or Monday the 11th. So not counting Sunday, that makes it Monday the 11th or Tuesday the 12th. I think I'm almost as anxious as you are, Donna!
Interestingly, GBF received the BOX on her birthday...and I sent it out on mine!!

It's here, it's here, it came this afternoon, took about 2 hours to sort through it all. Manis it packed, and it's full of wonderful stuff, your right frogwings, there was lots of stuff I loved, had to control myself. I hope all my goodies I picked out to add to the box will fit. Going to get it all packed back tonight as I have the car tomorrow and will try to get it mailed out then, I don't think I have the car again this week. I'll post once it's actually in the mail.

This has been great so far, not only has it been going smoothly (except for the taping up of the monster), but we're running ahead of schedule. I can't wait!! This is going to be fun. It's like a major shopping spree in an art store without leaving home!! I did get it, then forgot to stick the stuff in the box, found it on the back of the couch after we wrestled with taping the box. Debating whether or not to send it seperate too, but theres only Joni left and it goes back to Sue. So I might not.
joni, defanetly a LOT of stuff, and some good stuff too, ink, stamps, punches, ribbons, fibers, lots of paper stuffs, printed (on card stock) pictures, ( I replaced the ones I took out).

Heeee. I debated about sending it along as well...I'm guessing there's really no point now; I'd say save the postage! I only really sent it because there were other goodies that had got left out. I shared those out into three envies, and sent one each to you, Joni, and Sue, so's you'd each have a preview of what was yet to come! If there was anything there you won't use, save it for the next box that comes along :)
It's hard to believe we're almost through the list, and ahead of schedule too!!

ok, next order of business ladies.
I took the box to the post office in Glasgow because I was going to a scrp class there. The post man said that big bulge in the top of the box changes the shape of the box and you aren't supose to send it flat rate, only regular priority. I told him it arrived to me like that, and I was like 9th one on the list to recieve it, and it has always been sent for $12.95. He said ok and didn't charge me regular priority. So just a warning, next time around do not pack the box till it has a bulge, someone along the line is going to have to pay for the weight of of, and not flat rate. And thats one heavy box.
joni, you should recieve the notorious box Thursday.
The address label and confirmation stick are in the box on top.

Well folks, I'll take no chances, I should not be lifting anything that heavy anyway and if it is close to 25 lbs I would never be able to get it to the post office alone. I am going to break it down into two boxes and save the urge to pull the post lady over the counter and choke her when she smugly says I can't ship it like that.

Apparently we should worry about it next time, I mean it is postal regulations, and someone is going to get a postal person who will not let it go for flat rate.

Since this RR is almost up, I would agree- we can worry about it next time one of these starts up. Frogwings and I wanted to make sure we sent out as much as we had gotten, so continued the pattern of overstuffing. I think the post office would be happier with a slightly less full package, we had to keep up the tradition of needing to sit on the box to get it closed.
Joni Owens
08-12-2008, 04:05 PM
We may need to adjust the contents, maybe, send certain things and leave out others that may end up being bulky. One thing for certain, this box is proof that we give as much as we get - what a wonderfully generous goup! This is fun. I will make sure I'm home the next few days with the blinds open and door WIDE open so the postperson will know I am here!

Joni, I'm sure your smile will shine halfway to Kentucky when you see it coming! As to the weight, I checked at the P.O.; and either we were going on estimates earlier, or somebody took out all that lead...or was it titanium?? It was just under 15 lbs. leaving here, and just as full (at least) as when it arrived. My suggestion for avoiding extra charges is to spread things out as much as possible, and utilize every teen-ninecy bit of space...or maybe hire a truck??!!! I didn't get any complaints when I took it in; but they know me, so maybe they make allowances for my nuttiness!
The PO people are just a little odd. OK, so maybe they're the squirrelly ones!!

according to regulations... as long as the edges of the flaps are meeting, it's ok. you musta got a persnickity postal worker. especially if they didn't 'push' the issue and make u pay.
