A Cuppa Tea: Stacked Teacups

Don’t you just love those images of stacked teacups? I know I do.

In this swap you will make 3, 4, or 5 cut-out teacup shaped pieces of art. Teacups can be hand drawn/hand painted or stamped or collaged. Please keep your cups reasonably flat so that they can be displayed as a stack of cups.

Hints:

Please keep the teacups smallish - cut them from pieces of paper that are chunky sized (4 x 4).

Handles: these can be a bear to cut, it is easier to cut them separately from the teacup shape then attach them with glue.

Saucers. Please make teacups without saucers, it will make them easier to stack.

This is a no sign up swap.

Cootie Alert: Covid-19. Please write your AFA user name in large letters on the reverse on the envelope. I will be quarantining mail for 72 hours before opening. I will acknowledge receipt of your cups on the thread the day they arrive, but the ohhs and ahhs will have to wait until I open the envelope after their 72 hour quarantine.

Postage:

Your cups should fit inside a regular business sized envelope.. If you are mailing more than 4 teacups, please include an extra additional ounce postage stamp. Otherwise include one first class postage stamp and a large address label for your returns. I will provide the return envelopes.

International players: I will cover your return postage. Got dicey postal service where you are? Let me know and I will hold your returns until they can be mailed.

Sounds like fun! I'll see if I can get some done! :)
I hope I do this right. I keep thinking cups on an ATC, but these are individual cups, right? Cut from a 4x4 piece of cardstock. Okay. I think I've got it!

CiCiCreates
04-05-2020, 05:24 PM
I’m with you Lisa, and we’re probably overthinking it! How do you display them stacked? If you glue a strip on the back near the top, down the side edges, they really could be stacked, one inserts into the top of another. But maybe that’s a better idea for when we get the returns. I will be happy to just do individual cups, lol.

I cut my cups out of watercolor paper. I used ATC and 4 x 4 Chunky sized pieces of paper and drew a teacup on them.
I then cut out the teacup shape and finished the artwork.

As far as display goes, there are a couple of options:
*you could either hang them individually
*glue them so that they stick together as one piece of art.
*With the no bigger than 4 x 4 size they should display in chunky sleeves if that is how you keep your collection.

I was going to stick mine together with silvers of Command Strips so that I can rearrange them when I want without harming the artwork. Hope this explanation helps.

I was kind of wondering about that, too. They will probably all be slightly diffferent sizes.

Juanita Rojas
04-08-2020, 03:54 PM
Sorry everybody, but I'll ask this another way: Should the teacups all be as large as an ATC will accommodate, or as large as a 4x4 will hold? There's a big difference and I'd kind of like mine to fit together and look, well, fabulous and not ill-fitting!

notinkansas

Clarifications: Measurements

I forgot you folks cannot read my mind.

I measured the samples I made. they are 3 x 4 inches, for the exception of one I made from an atc, which is icky.

Please make your teacups from chunky sized paper.

3" tall and 4" wide? Ha ha. They may not stack well if some are 3" wide and some are 4" wide. We're making life so difficult for you, aren't we? Glad I haven't started any yet!
I LOVE that calamityware, BTW!

CiCiCreates

The bottom is usually a lot narrower than the top, so that should be fine for stacking.

04-09-2020, 01:27 PM

I'm still having "challenges", lol. This is exercising my brain. I made my first cup "shape" (not finished) and it looked like this photo. Then I said to myself, "OH NO! That won't work! You can't make them look stacked if the tea is showing on the top!" So, now I'm trying to get a version that's straight from the side.

I think we're going to have to relax our expectations a little. There will be so many different shapes. I'm just going to have fun and do my best. I hope mine will be acceptable in the end.

Still lurking!

Wedgwood and Pink Chintzware - Wedgwood was painted with acrylics, it was fun mixing the classic "Wedgwood Blue" color. For the Chintzware, I used colored papers, glued scallop strip trim.

CiCiCreates

"Violets" and "Red Rose" were both done in watercolors, with gold marker trim.

CiCiCreates

"Yellow Chintzware" is scrapbook paper painted with yellow marker and green marker trim.
"Flow Blue" is a term for blue transferware that flows a bit in the kiln, slightly blurring the edges. I thought that would be a good idea for a watercolor medium.

I started on my cups - I like them with a view of the inside. As far as stacking, they could be cut along the front edge, or they could be the top cup. What do you guys think? I won't make any more until I hear if I should continue in this fashion or make them more one-dimensional...

I made my first one like this and then thought about the "stackable" issue, lol. I ended up making 3 others from just the sideview, but sent the first one along as a hostie, OR as a top cup as you suggested. I don't mind getting either kind. I probably will just display them in my 3 ring binder.

Yeah. I thought of the slitting thing, and it should work. Hopefully, others will be open to the idea. ;)

CiCiCreates
04-26-2020, 01:49 PM
I do see what you mean. Maybe it should be up to the lucky recipient, but a slit could be cut right along the top front (painted) edge for the bottom of another cup to fit into and it would look great. My own cups were all made looking directly from the side, so just one visible top edge. But I did take the liberty of glueing a paper strip in back at the top, just a narrow line of glue on each side. Recipient can decide whether to use it for stacking or not. By the way, I love the cup with a teapot on it!

Hey....thought I might lurk a bit. It has been a long time since I have been on the site. Good to see some of my ATC friends are still here. I pulled out some moos because I had some scrap cardstock and it got me thinking about the site. I hope everyone has been doing well and staying safe.

My cuppas arrived today. Besides all looking different, I love that they are all differently shaped.

When I created my cup pattern, I made a mug first as that is what I drink my tea from. I used that pattern on all the family birthday cards for May.
