Amabie Yokai!

Lately, the internet has been blowing up with images of the Amabie, a Japanese Yokai that is said to ward off epidemics. According to a legend from the 1800s, the Amabie appeared off the coast of Kumamoto, Japan, in the form of a mermaid-type creature with 3 legs, a beak, and long hair. The amabie, a yokai (Japanese folklore spirit), told the people that they would have bountiful crops. As it returned to the sea, it said "If an epidemic occurs, draw a picture of me and show it to everyone." In the current pandemic, many artists on instagram, twitter, and deviantart have been sharing hope and good wishes with images of the Amabie. The Japanese government has recently adopted it in some of their anti-Covid-19 campaigns. It would be nice to share some Amabie pictures among ourselves, even if you don't believe the legend! The Amabie from the picture above is the original one that appeared in the newspaper in the 1800s. If you need some inspiration, search #amabie, #amabiechallenge, on instagram or Twitter and also click the related Japanese hashtags.

Card Requirements: Please read carefully
1. Each card should feature your version of the Amabie- a Japanese yokai with 3 legs, long hair, and a beak. It's body is also said to have scales, but scales are optional for your Amabie.
2. DO NOT submit cards that have a pre-printed Amabie that you took from another source. For example, if you printed off the original Amabie above and glued it on a card, it would be returned to you, even if you embellished it. If you stamped, drew, or collaged an Amabie of your own, the card would be perfect for this swap.
3. Keep cards flat, fibres should be fine, but no thick or metal embellishments!
4. All cards should be 2.5" x 3.5" with straight edges
5. Include your username, real name, and location on the back of your cards
6. Please submit only cards that you would love to receive in return!

Mailing & Swapping Out:
1. I will be swapping apparent effort for apparent effort cards, medium for medium where possible
2. PM me for my address when ready to mail. I moved in 2018.
3. No cards/communication by swap due date will result in NEUTRAL iTrader
4. Host cards are loved and treasured but not required to play.
5. Mailing:
Canadian players: 1 “P” ($0.92) stamp for 3 cards, $1.30 or 2 "P" stamps for 6 cards
US players: $1 USD (or $1.30 in CDN postage) for 3 cards, $2 USD for 6 cards (or $1.94 in CDN postage)
International players: $2 USD for 3 cards, $3 USD for 6 cards. If you are outside North America and need help with postage, please pm me and we can work something out.
If it turns out your cards don't need all the stamps, I will return the excess postage.
6. Send a large self-addressed label or self-addressed business sized envelope for your returns
**If you send Canadian stamps, be sure that they have not been used (ie. No stamps that missed cancellation on another envie.)
7. Mail in Canada can take a long time, especially during the Covid-19 crisis. Allow 14-20 days outside of Canada, 5-7 within Canada. Mail between Canada and the USA remains fairly normal, but Europe, Australia, and Asia are very long as there are fewer flights.
8. Please mail promptly as I plan to swap the cards the evening of June 26 (late cards will be returned unswapped).

I like him! I have been Googling images, but I haven’t tried to do any just yet..... I see lots of good possibilities though.

I think it's super cute and open to a lot of interpretations! I've been seeing a lot on pintrest and instagram.

I've been following a mail artist called @forklif7 on Instagram. She has created an amabie every few days, they are all so great for inspiration! Her amabie wears what looks like a plague doctor mask: https://www.instagram.com/forklif7/

04-27-2020, 06:26 PM
I was thinking that a great amabie might be done in the style of Maurice Sendak, like the Wild Things. I may try to attempt this!

04-27-2020, 06:31 PM
Another cool amabie I found, made from a washi tape collage posted by akamarzipan on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/p/B_fIKpflHwI/

04-30-2020, 03:36 PM
1000 more amabies are on instagram today! I love this paper pieced one by @saoringmercilapin https://www.instagram.com/p/B_mTS5fgYAP/

Sorry, I am going to have to drop out.
Nothing is working for me.
My Amabie Muse is apparently busy elsewhere.

Sorry to see you go, Vicki Z!

Pancake Machine, I guess it's just you and me for now!

Pancake Machine, great amabies!! :)

05-06-2020, 01:24 PM
Thanks smallgirl, the beak is a little more snout-ish than I wanted, but I do like how they turned out all in all. I didn't intend to make the Jamaican one look like a zombie, but it did turn out to look a little zombie like. I've got one more I have in mind, then I'll go from there.

05-06-2020, 02:39 PM
I thought the Jamaican one reminded me a little bit like Old Gregg from the Mighty Boosh (portrayed by Noel Fielding).

ah - Old Gregg - makes me want some Bailey's!!

Here is my last card; you should get the country Smallgirl :D

Lurking. ;-) Gonna work on some sketches before I commit.

Great Canadian amabie, pancake machine!

I hope you join, FlyingPhoenix :)

05-15-2020, 07:12 PM
Any lurkers out there wanting to jump in and get their feet wet with the Amabie? There's still lots of time to mail :)

05-19-2020, 06:13 PM
Pancake machine, your amabies swam in today!! I hope more people join us soon :) Lurkers, feel free to jump in! :)

05-20-2020, 02:00 AM

ok! I banged out some works in progress today! sign me up! These were super fun and in the course or my research, i found out Amabie has a lot of friends/family? who all do the same thing.

"If someone gets the plague, show them a picture of me." or "Keep a picture of me in your house to ward of the plague" similar.

05-20-2020, 11:47 AM
Those are wonderful, Snager! Welcome to the swap :)

05-22-2020, 11:32 AM
I finished cards yesterday, so sign me up please!

05-22-2020, 01:00 PM
Woo-hoo! Welcome, Suzi! Sending my address!

05-26-2020, 04:46 PM
I still need to make my cards for this swap! I find it interesting that on instagram, many of the Amabies appear to be feminine in appearance, but the original story didn't mention whether the original Amabie was a male or female. I guess many people are inspired by mermaids!

05-30-2020, 02:10 PM
Happy weekend everyone! Still plenty of time for anyone lurking to join! Tell your friends, hopefully we can get a few more players to join- I know the topic is a bit unusual, but that's what makes it fun :)

06-01-2020, 08:32 PM
Suzi, you lovely amabies are here! This is a picture:

06-01-2020, 09:52 PM
Thanks for posting the picture! Glad that they arrived safely.

06-06-2020, 02:24 AM
Still hoping a few people might join us...20 days to swap deadline, so lots of time!

06-09-2020, 06:48 PM
What a cool swap! I never heard this legand before, and was so excited to see all cool examples on the interwebs.. I made these..

06-10-2020, 12:25 AM
Woohoo! Those look fantastic, poonwugget! Thank you for joining. I pmed my address :)

06-14-2020, 02:30 PM
Hello everyone! Just under 2 weeks to swap deadline, so any lurkers out there, now's the time to join :) PM me for my address and let me know when you mail! :)

06-15-2020, 09:59 PM
I tried to make an amabie in the style of Maurice Sendak

06-17-2020, 12:11 PM
It's 10 days to swap deadline, so I am moving this to the "active" swap thread! Looking forward to a few more sets of amabies to swim in!

06-23-2020, 11:58 AM
Loving the theme!
Saw this a couple weeks ago and wanted to join but wasn't sure if I'd have time to finish the cards. Mind I lurk and admire the art? :)

`8. Please mail promptly as I plan to swap the cards the evening of June 26 (late cards will be returned unswapped).`
i read this just after i sealed the envelope shut.

I'm sending them anyway. small girl, if you see anything you want to swap me for in my envelope go ahead. i'm leaving the atc community after my last swap. it's been too much.

Sure thing, snager! I can also wait a little and swap them out with the others, as poonwugget's are not yet arrived either, probably due to the covid delays. Sorry to see you leave the ATC community, your art is fantastic! You will always be welcome here :)

06-24-2020, 01:45 PM
Ok, I got them in the mail!
thanks for being understanding. orz

06-27-2020, 03:20 PM
Happy Weekend everyone! I am just going to wait for our last 2 sets before swapping out. I have until next Friday off work, so I am also going to attempt to make an amabie zine to send you all as well, but we will see how it goes. :)

07-02-2020, 06:26 PM
Poonwugget, your cards are here!

07-07-2020, 05:03 PM
No new mail today...hopefully tomorrow or the next day :)

07-10-2020, 07:38 PM
Sooooo...it has been 2 weeks since swap deadline and technically I should mail the swaps out by today. However, due to the Covid-19 situation that has slowed down the mail, I am still waiting on one set and since we are such a tiny group, I hope that you don't mind if we wait just a little longer for the last set of cards to arrive. Canada Post has been experiencing heavy delays. Thank you for understanding.

07-11-2020, 08:12 AM
I don’t mind waiting. I know that the mail has slowed down considerably. I have a set of my cards that were mailed for another swap in late April that are still in the postal abyss.

07-11-2020, 10:29 PM
I know what you mean, Suzi! I have been waiting for a tracked package from California since June; tracking hasn't even been updated since June 20...I have a feeling it's just sitting in an overflowing cart of mail somewhere.

07-14-2020, 05:26 PM
i'm sorry I slowed everything down. ,_, i'd still be willing to wait even if it wasn't my parcel slowing things, though

07-14-2020, 09:16 PM
Not to worry, snager! I'm hoping it will arrive this week. It's interesting, because last week I sent a postcard from here in Canada to Texas and she got it in 4 days! However, that is not typical, it usually takes about 2 weeks depending on the state. I find California and Washington are the slowest, even though they are geographically the closest to me.

07-16-2020, 04:11 PM
YAHOO! Snager, your cards are here and they were worth the wait! :) :) Swapping these amabies out and hitting the mailbox on Saturday! :)

07-18-2020, 07:37 PM
Thank you for your patience, everyone! All your amabie returns are now in the mail :) Thank you so much for playing!

Hi all,

I know the swap is wrapping up, but here is a really interesting article about Corona Cartoons in Japan, and the first entry is a very long overview about Amabie. http://www.tcj.com/corona-cartoons-japan/

My cards arrived yesterday! I plan to leave my feedback later this evening!

Mine arrived too! Thanks so much for hosting and the great little magazine!

07-28-2020, 10:51 PM
I am so glad the cards are arriving! Interesting, pancake machine, that you received the amabies but not my card catalogues yet, as I sent both on the same day, except the card catalogues were in a bigger envelope.
