Mixed media incorporating Card Catalogs

5th Library card catalog swap.

This here is the 5th round.
Hey, so do you remember when you used the card catalog to search for books in the library? Or, you haven’t, but you’re curious? Below is an image of a card catalog.

215350

These cards are pretty sturdy, and I have a bunch of them. This swap is a chance to make mixed media ATCs with old card catalogs. You can collage, tear, use the card as a base to paint, draw, etc.

Swap Requirements:
1. It must be standard ATC sized 3.5” x 2.5”, so you'll need to cut the card down if you use it as a base.
2. You must be able to tell (even faintly) it came from a card catalog.
3. Make sure cards are well-glued and sealed.
4. Use only light embellishments and make sure your cards fit in plastic sleeves.

Optional:
*You should try to base your art off the cards you get. However, while this is preferred, it is not required.
*An extra card for the host is welcome, but completely optional.

How to get these lovely card catalogs? If you sign up to play, I'll need you to PM me your address. I'll send you 6 cards, you choose the 3 you want to do, or 6 if you so wish.

Choose your card type.
snipped for room

Mailing Information ~
* Include username, real name, your state/country and the swap name on the back of all cards - and put username and swap name on all envelopes sent.
* US Participants – Please include postage and a mailing label. This is preferred to a SASE. An extra stamp would also be nice (for initially sending the cards), but the extra stamp is optional.
* International Participants - Please send a clearly-addressed envelope or mailing label and I will cover postage for the first three. If you don't want/need postage covered, just give me a heads up.

If you get the initial catalog cards and decide not to participate, that's fine. Please just keep the cards, no need to return them.

When you receive your returns, please leave I-Trader for your swap host and rep points for the artists of the cards you receive. People like to know where their little artworks find home.

Quick key- * means I've mailed out the initial set of cards. If your name is blue, you've let me know that you received the cards you will use to make atcs. If your name is in purple, I've received your finished atcs. Orange they are in the mail and finally if your name is red, you've received your swap cards. If you need to withdraw I’ll just pull your name.

Allen, I didn't say how many cards I would make - 3 for 3. You usually send some extra ones, right? So I will have at least 1 extra for a host card?

CastleQueen5
05-10-2020, 08:24 PM
I picked mixed, thinking it was the NO thinking choice.

*Mixed - I can also do Ĺ and Ĺ of any two of three above

So lets see I want a challenge, and then dang it forgot the other choices already. But thinking based my profile likes. what was that called, default, please.

Elliejaybird - welcome! Glad to have you on board.

I always send 6 cards - it is a nice balance and works with one stamp. Had forgotten about that when I told CQ I'd send 7. I might go ahead and try 7 and see if she gets them. I've already gotten yours sealed up and ready to go Angeljoy. What worked the last swap is a couple of options if you decide to make 6 cards. First, you can use scraps from the cards you cut down to make a host card. Or you can make a card based off my profile. And really, you don't have to make me a host card. They are super nice, but so completely optional. Sometimes I'm good about making 4 cards, but other times I just have 3 in me. I just really enjoy seeing what people do with the old card catalogs. We use them as scrap paper at work, so seeing them turned into art makes me happy.

nanvan
05-10-2020, 10:27 PM
I hate to think of them using these wonderful old cards for scrap paper - what a shame. I inquired at some of the local libraries but they don't have any of the old cards left - or at least they say they don't. I have purchased a batch from Etsy - some are good, but it turned out they were all children's books - not much diversity to choose from. I really love your card catalogue swaps - it brings out such interesting results!

pancake machine
05-10-2020, 10:43 PM
In fairness, they probably don't have the old cards. A lot of libraries recycled them. At a certain point, what do you do with the old cards once you move online? I think why we still have some is that my library did this fund raiser back in the 90s where they sent out a bunch of cards to authors and had them sign the card, then sold the autographed cards. Because of that, I think we held onto them for awhile to see if we would do that fundraiser again. Once that didn't happen, instead of recycling them, they became scrap paper.

nanvan
05-10-2020, 10:59 PM
So glad they held that fundraiser! So lucky for us!

Just got my cards today.
Iím intrigued by them. Iím actually going to try and find the books.

Iím new here yíall and I know youíve done this before, do we treat this like a big ATC? Iím assuming you just want our artistry to do what it will keeping in mind what it is, yeah?

pancake machine
05-14-2020, 10:36 PM
Glad your cards arrived CrafDee!

You'll need to cut the card down to be standard ATC size. So part of your decision is going to be how you use the card; as the base, or tear it and mount sections to another card, etc.

And you are correct that it does have to be recognizable as coming from a card catalog in some way. The card catalog has to be part of the card and still recognizable, even just barely.

After that, you can do whatever you want to do. Most people, I'd say 90% or so, make their cards based on the subject of the card catalog. I do try and select cards that can be made to work in some way and I love to see how people interpret the cards. However, this is not a requirement given you only have 6 cards to work with. So you do not have to stick with the card topic if they don't speak to you.

Does that help?

Laffqueen, you are too clever, using that image for the “banquet” card! I thought the title was going to be “Alice in Wonderland”. Very creative!

Pancake Machine, the notecard had several cats on it, great for my card of T.S. Eliot’s “Practical Cats”. Thanks to my obsessive compulsion for accuracy, I looked up all my titles to see if the plot lines would help with my images. Already got an education! The Broadway play “Cats” was inspired by Eliot’s “Practical Cats”. I also learned, via another card, that the era known as the “Gay 90’s” was also called the “mauve decade”. I had never heard that.

Think of mauve as 50% pink and 50% lilac. I once heard an interesting description of that color, as “pink trying to be lilac”. According to my online info, there was a new analine dye put together during that time, don’t know where or how they came up with the name, but it became all the rage for decorative items, and fabrics for interior decor and clothing.

Had to look up mauve.

Up until the mid-19th century, almost all dyes were made from materials found in plants (indigo, woad, woad, madder, brazilwood, tumeric and others), animals (shellfish purple, cochineal), and minerals. While these dyes could produce an amazing range of colours, there were still some colours that couldnít be produced by natural means, and some of the colours that could be produced by natural means were inclined to run, fade, or to destroy the very fabrics they dyed.

Then, in 1856 William Henry Perkin, a young chemistry student, working at home, after hours, in a makeshift laboratory, trying to create a chemically identical artificial version of quinine (a very valuable plant-based drug which was used to treat malaria), thought to experiment with the results of another failed attempt.

The result of his experiment on his experiment was mauveine (also known as Perkinís mauve, aniline purple, harmaline,Tyrian purple, plain old mauve, and, if you want to be extremely technical, 3-amino-2,Ī9-dimethyl-5-phenyl-7-(p-tolylamino)phenazinium acetate). Mauveine was a combination of aniline (a common extract of coal tar) and other compounds which created a brilliant purple which was the first mass produced chemical dye.* Mauveine would lead the way to dyes in dozens of other shades, all made from aniline from coal tar, and to everything from the modern dyes we use today, to cancer treatments.

Okay, one done! I had to do some research for this, and I'm pretty happy with the way it came out:

"Protocol of a damnation" - the demonic climax scene

215583

Here's a description of the book in case anyone is looking for some light reading (lol):

Empty your mind for this summer's chronicle of inter-gnostic ecumenicity set against the placid lake scenery of Ascona--there's more theological implication than artistry at work here. The theme, notes sociologist Berger in a postscript, ""could be described as the apparent inevitability of some sort of Christianity."" Between the two of them and a bottle of brandy, narrator Jacob Van Buren, who's just generally fascinated by religion and occultism, and Raymond Dell, half skeptical gigolo and half angel (cf., Berger's 1969 non-fiction inquiry into A Rumor of Angels), derive ""the argument from hell""--if evil (the murder of children) exists, then hell must exist. For the demonic climax scene, there just happens to be a Nazi war criminal hanging around the villa to give Dell an opportunity to assume the Father's mantle and exercise the protocol of damnation. A heavy supernatural smorgasbord for seekers after mystic Truth.

Vegan..your card is very well researched and carefully constructed however for me a swastika is a too painful reminder of the atrocities of the Holocaust and frankly gives me the willies when I think of the some of the hatred being spilled on our streets today. Don't mean to get too political here because it is about the art and your attention to theme is impressive.

pancake machine
05-20-2020, 12:55 PM
Any political cards or darker themed cards I do try and match to profiles that are good with that.

I have a few more sexual cards that I've not sent out, but I try and keep track of nudity too if that ever comes up.

And religious cards too.

Which is all a long winded way of saying I will watch profiles and try to make sure the card gets to those that are good with the topic.

Vegan4animals
05-20-2020, 01:33 PM
I think it's a good idea to speak up when something offends you, and you don't have to worry about getting a card that you find creepy and offensive. For example, I'm not a big fan of religious cards, nudity, or anything that exploits animals. Other than that I'm usually happy! I'm glad you sent me that card pm. Definitely intriguing!

pancake machine
05-20-2020, 02:33 PM
Glad it was an interesting card to work on V4A. Of course, with just the title to go on, it can be hard to know what the topic is going to be. A title like Lolita, for example, doesn't really say much, or Billy Bud for that matter.

Good reminder Laffqueen - thanks for that.

I got my cards today. They came in one of the WE care, damaged mail envelopes. The envelope ripped and so did all the cards. All in the exact same place. How does the PO do something like that? There was nothing to catch on the envelope to rip. To be honest they have character and are fine to use. But just mentioning it so when you see my cards you will see some very similar lines or shapes of the library part of the card.

Well I've got a number of temperance cards. Westerville was the headquarters of the Anti-Saloon League and were at the forefront to get the 18th Amendment enacted.

On another note, here is a third card from me. My goal was to convey all aspects of the title. The molecules for the origin and to a degree the history. Then the title transferred to a more textured background over a topographic map transfer to suggest physical constitution. And the bottom political map again referencing history. That's the idea at least!

BluSky it is true that at one time the swastika was a symbol of good fortune meaning "well-being" in Sanskrit but once it was adopted as the symbol for the Nazi regime it has become a symbol that represents fear, suppression and extermination for many people. Again, I understand its use in this SWAP to illustrate the idea on the library card but again..just not for me.

I'd have to look this up, but I have a picture from a book of a Buddha and there's a swastika in the picture. I know it didn't start out as a symbol of hatred and evil.

pancake machine
05-28-2020, 04:34 PM
Yes - that is all perfectly fine! I've always maintained that the layout and typing are quite distinctive and mark it as coming from a card catalog. My most recent card is a tape transfer of the text onto a different paper. I've also ripped up cards before too.

Here's an example of mine from a previous swap where I do just that.
215783

The swap has 2 requirements. 1) Has to be ATC sized. 2) should be able to tell, even faintly, that it came from a card catalog. So somewhere on the card you have to use either parts of the card catalog you received or have cut down the card and some of the text remains visible, even faintly.

I received my cards and am ready to mail them back to you. I'll be doing the 6/6. This swap is so much fun and I love the challenge of getting random cards. Here they are:
216023 216027216025 216026216024

your best card is the Suburban card because you made the card look like a tree, or so I think. BUT my favorite is the creepy white monkey!!!! It really spoke to me. (ok not literally, I dont have those issues)

But great work all around.

Jen, those are all wonderful! You got some great titles to work with, right? The game one is brilliant, and the fun house is fun! But I think I like the medieval knight and the colosseum just as much. They are all equally wonderful!
