View Full Version : The Poet's House, House-shaped ATC Swap, Open Media, Due Sept. 24th, 2020

TSMarie
07-22-2020, 10:46 AM
Swap Due Date – Thursday, Sept. 24th, 2020
Sign-up/withdraw Date – None; please just communicate
Number of Cards - 3 for 3
Number of Participants – Unlimited
Media – Open Media
Theme – The Poet's House (a house-shaped ATC swap)

For this swap, you will create house-shaped ATCs inspired by poets and their work. Each ATC must include either an image of the poet you are featuring, or a quote of their work (preferably a verse). It is up to you if you would like the card to be an actual home for your poet (doors, windows, etc.), or if you would like to decorate your house-shaped card in some other way.

A few possible poets to consider: Dickinson, Yates, Keats, Wordsworth, Tennyson, Poe, E. E. Cummings, Langston Hughes, Wordsworth...the possibilities are endless!

Card Guidelines:
1. Each card must be a house-shaped card cut from the standard ATC size of 2.5 x 3.5 inches.
2. Each card must be original and unique. Please don’t send in cards that you’ve swapped/traded in the past or plan on replicating for swapping/trading in the future.
3. Any embellishments must be relatively flat and lightweight.
4. Please send in only work that you have put thought, time, and effort into. Make sure that you are swapping a card you would be happy to receive.
5. Please make sure that cards have a sturdy background and earn the name “card.”
6. Each card must be in an individual plastic sleeve (please no connecting photo album sleeves without also including individual sleeves).
7. Each card should be labeled with the swap name, the poet you are featuring, your username, your real name, date of creation, and your location.

Mailing Guidelines:
1. Please mail cards in a business sized envelope, spreading the cards over the space of the envelope.
2. If you tape your cards together or onto a sturdy background when mailing, please use an easy-release tape such as painter’s tape or washi tape. I don’t want anyone’s beautiful artwork to be damaged by tape.
3. Please include a self-addressed, stamped envelope for your return cards.
4. If you are mailing from the U.S., one Forever stamp should cover the cost of returns.
5. If you are mailing internationally, please provide one of the following for your returns:
a. One U.S. Global Forever stamp.
b. One well-concealed $1 bill.
c. $1 payment via PayPal.

*When you are ready to mail your cards, please just private message me for my address. If you have it from an earlier swap, it has not changed.
*iTraders will be given when cards are received by me.
*Please note that cards must be received by the due date. No cards and no communication will result in neutral iTrader. You may withdraw any time before the due date.

Here is a sample house-shaped ATC--though not a poet's house. :)

There are indeed so many possibies! I am currently reading "101 Classics of Victorian Verse" while trying to choose my own poets/poems. Unfortunately, I do want to keep the swap at 3:3 just because I am afraid going up to 6 cards would overwhelm my organizational abilities, but I would encourage you to make extras and to have them available for personal trade. There are a lot of house-shaped ATC enthusiasts that might be up for trading. :)

is there a house shape that must be used or can they be different? Also, can they be landscape as well as portrait orientation?

Hello tah0027! There is not one specific house shape you must use; however, it should be recognizable as a house shape (no super funky roof lines). However you cut the house shape, though, you should have one side that reaches 2.5 inches and one side that reaches 3.5 inches. In other words, you must keep the same length and width of a standard ATC, even though you are shaping the ATC itself. As for landscape or portrait, I have never seen a landscape house. I would be afraid that the roof line would eat up too much of the ATC.

Thanks, CQ5! I had a bit of help with the theme from my hubby. I knew I wanted to do a house-house ATC, and he was an English major in college, so he actually suggested The Poet's House, and I thought it was perfect. :)

At Lowes, look at the Sherwin-Williams paint chips. they are 2 1/2 inches wide with a pointy end and more than 3 1/2 inches long. Your scissors or paper cutter can make them the right length. You can use the paint color as your background or cover it. But they are a good shape.

So...my second card is completed, but I hesitate to post it since it is a bit risque. It is based off of Emily Dickinson's poem Wild Nights.

Wild nights - Wild nights!
Were I with thee
Wild nights should be
Our luxury!

Futile - the winds -
To a Heart in port -
Done with the Compass -
Done with the Chart!

Rowing in Eden -
Ah - the Sea!
Might I but moor - tonight -
In thee!

Based on the poem, I think you can guess the direction of the card. It includes a couple in a lovers' embrace. If you are not offended by nudity or the risque nature, feel free to check out the card by the link below. Since I know it would not suit everyone, I will make sure to only give it to someone that comments that they would be ok to receive it. :)

Hello Folks! Just wanted to draw your attention to a slight modification in the instructions. I wrote, "Each ATC must include either an image of the poet you are featuring, or a quote of their work (preferably a verse)." I have just added the "preferably a verse" because I would like to make sure that the quote included on the card is recognizable as poetry, rather than just a very short line or the title of a poem. Please let me know if you have any questions!

I am ready for show and tell.

On all my cards, I used postage stamps, and found poems by the authors. I used parts of the poem that seemed to fit the card. The paper I had just bought, in a packet. The flower trees are the OTHER side of the paper, that I used for the house.

I learned a lot about the 4 authors. I hope they all get new loving forever homes. I really loved the elements of this swap that came together in one card, the poet, the house the poem. Great theme TSMarie.

Lets begin. Walt Whitman, He as sad when Lincoln was shot. I edit down the poem. Lilacs were a symbol of Lincoln. The poem was called When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom’d. You can read the whole poem here:

e e cummings was probably the poet I was most familiar with growing up. I totally chopped up this poem with my poetic license. The poem TIC toc as about how we are all slaves to the clock, but spring or nature doesnt need a tic toc.

http://www.atcsforall.com/forum/gallery/images/21118/small/1_e_e_cummings.jpg

THERE ARE SO MANY TICTOC
By e. e. cummings

there are so many tictoc
clocks everywhere telling people
what toctic time it is for
tictic instance five toc minutes toc
past six tic

Spring is not regulated and does
not get out of order nor do
its hands a little jerking move
over numbers slowly

we do not
wind it up it has no weights
springs wheels inside of
its slender self no indeed dear
nothing of the kind.

(So,when kiss Spring comes
we'll kiss each kiss other on kiss the kiss
lips because tic clocks toc don't make
a toctic difference
to kisskiss you and to
kiss me)

This was a brand new poet to me. And I am not really all into poetry but liked the stuff I read that he had written. It was hard to narrow it down to one poem by him.

Paul Laurence Dunbar (June 27, 1872 – February 9, 1906) was an American poet, novelist, and playwright of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born in Dayton, Ohio to parents who were enslaved in Kentucky before the American Civil War, Dunbar began writing stories and verse when he was a child. He published his first poems at the age of 16 in a Dayton newspaper, and served as president of his high school's literary society.
Dunbar wrote his first poem at the age of six and gave his first public recital at the age of nine.
Dunbar was the only African-American student during his years at Central High School in Dayton. Orville Wright was a classmate and friend. Well-accepted, he was elected as president of the school's literary society, and became the editor of the school newspaper and a debate club member.

Since the late 20th century, scholars have become more interested in these other works. Suffering from tuberculosis, which then had no cure, Dunbar died in Dayton, Ohio at the age of 33.

Promise
by Paul Laurence Dunbar
I grew a rose within a garden fair,
And, tending it with more than loving care,
I thought how, with the glory of its bloom,
I should the darkness of my life illume;
And, watching, ever smiled to see the lusty bud
Drink freely in the summer sun to tinct its blood.
My rose began to open, and its hue
Was sweet to me as to it sun and dew;
I watched it taking on its ruddy flame
Until the day of perfect blooming came,
Then hasted I with smiles to find it blushing red—
Too late! Some thoughtless child had plucked my rose and fled!

another stamp led me to discover a new to me poet. This is from the poem Lucinda Matlock. One of many poems in a collection called Spoon River Anthology (1915), a sequence of over 200 free-verse epitaphs spoken from the cemetery of the town of Spoon River.

Lucinda Matlock
BY EDGAR LEE MASTERS
I went to the dances at Chandlerville,
And played snap-out at Winchester.
One time we changed partners,
Driving home in the moonlight of middle June,
And then I found Davis.
We were married and lived together for seventy years,
Enjoying, working, raising the twelve children,
Eight of whom we lost
Ere I had reached the age of sixty.
I spun, I wove, I kept the house, I nursed the sick,
I made the garden, and for holiday
Rambled over the fields where sang the larks,
And by Spoon River gathering many a shell,
And many a flower and medicinal weed —
Shouting to the wooded hills, singing to the green valleys.
At ninety-six I had lived enough, that is all,
And passed to a sweet repose.
What is this I hear of sorrow and weariness,
Anger, discontent and drooping hopes?
Degenerate sons and daughters,
Life is too strong for you —
It takes life to love Life.

CQ5 - I really love your poetry houses and love the way you've used parts of each poem - they're really lovely! And thank you for sharing the poets and the whole poems. Spoon River Anthology was one of my favourites growing up. It's hard to pick a favorite, but I think I love Walt Whitman's poem about Lincoln the best.

Wow! These are wonderful, CQ5! And what a great idea to use the stamps of the poet, and then the poetry itself. Thank you so much for sharing and inspiring!

cq5, the poems you chose are wonderful! i have chosen to use lower case letters in my world for years, thanks to e.e.cummings. i think it has been, for me, a form of rebellion. it still is! all of your choices are so very touching ...

Funny story, as I recall my English teacher mother telling me, about e.e. cummings - when he began writing he used the traditional E.E. Cummings, a publisher accidentally wrote his name as e.e. cummings once. Cummings told them to change it but they said they couldn't because it had already gone to the printer, and forever after he was e.e. cummings. Now whether that's true or not, I don't know.

Nice work, CQ!

my houses seem dry enough to mail, so I think tomorrow they will go out. Maybe today.

I LOVE NANVANS poet's houses. I could actually read the words, and I am amazed that you could get the words on the small house area. I had more trouble. But I gather smaller font not only works but are readable from a photo.

I do wonder which one of them are mine??!??!

Thank you, wildholly. I love to see older couples that have been together forever, and I hope that my hubby and I are one day the same, but it so sad when one passes away and the other is left behind. I cannot imagine that kind of grief. But it is such a lovely poem.

Majanga great cards. I love the doors on the corridor. I cant read the words because I need my glasses, but love the process, you used.

It does seem that the crocodile must have taken a long time with all those fabrics. That is my favorite.

Even the Gardenias are lovely because you turned the house sideways.

CastleQueen5, the reduction in photo quality also doesn't help! It's easier to read in person.

The words on the card are the first two stanzas of the poem. They read:

I passed through, I should have paused,
there were a hundred doors. One opened.
In there, someone whose name
is not yet known to me lived out

his middle years in simple terms, two chairs,
one place laid for early breakfast, one plate
with dry toast and butter softening. There
his mind raced through writings
