Haagmm
12-08-2020, 02:20 PM
Swap Due Date: February 1, 2021
Sign up by Date: any time
Withdraw by date: no deadline, just communicate please
Number of Items: 3 for 3 or 6 for 6
Number of participants: unlimited
Media: Any media is welcome – no stickers please

I did this swap over the new year for the last 2 years and really enjoyed it. I hope some of you who played before will join again and I hope some new players join as well!!

This swap is centered on trying a new style, a new technique, or a new product. Be brave! The little change to this swap for 2021 is that we are creating backgrounds using something new to us. Then in your returns you will get background cards that will hopefully be different that what you would typically use or create as a background. So it’s a double for the “try something new” adventure.

As adults, we don’t try new things or challenge ourselves as much as we did when we were children. I bet that most of this is due to past failure, worry or insecurities. Kids are always trying different ways to figure things out, making new projects, developing new skills – there are no excuses and minimal limitations in their eyes. This swap will be a no-judgement zone.

Some possibly new techniques are shaving cream marbling, paint pouring, nail polish dip marbling, blending watercolors, watercolor with salt or alcohol, or crayola resist. Some new products I’ve tried recently are alcohol inks, puffy fabric paint (not totally new to me but new to ATC art), heavy body acrylic paints and acrylics with thickener. I still have pouring medium that I haven’t used and recently ‘inherited’ a set of gouache paint that I haven’t tried.

All mediums and techniques are welcome. Send in your best work, something you would be excited to receive if I sent it to you.

All cards need to be standard ATC size: 2.5” X 3.5” and sturdy. No shaped cards for this swap. Please don’t send flimsy cards that are just a sheet of paper. Back your ATC on heavy cardstock or paperboard (such as a cereal or tissue box).

Cards need to be sent in a plastic sleeve for their protection.

Please include at least the Swap name, your Username, your real name and location and the style, technique or product on the back of each card.

US participants, please enclose a SASE for your returns with one forever stamp on it. International participants: please enclose an envelope with your name and address clearly printed on it and a well concealed US Dollar Bill, an International Forever Stamp or I have Venmo.

When your cards are ready to mail, send me a PM for my address. I moved this year so please make sure you have the new address. Please mail your cards early so that they will arrive by the deadline.

When you receive your returns, please leave “you rock” points for the artists whose cards you received, and if you feel that I’ve done a good job as a host, please leave an iTrader for me (haagmm).

So, who wants to try something new?

Over in another swap, we are chatting about using Acetate and printing from a good printer. I am going to try to head to Hobby Lobby one day this week and use a 40% off coupon and buy some sheets and print on it.

Plus I plan to do what Jo.on.the.go, but using my new pearl alcohol inks. They have the metallic shiny in them already.

Hey, even bought and used the TIM holtz alcohol ink container to keep my inks more organized. BTW< I have a few slots left in this device. Might need to buy more. YEP pretty sure, I need more.

I did find some images, that I want to try on the acetate sheets, in my printer.

I am not sure when I will get started. I am concerned about the outcome. I am a do it right person, not do it fast. (both are acceptable types), So it takes me longer to get started.

Hi Haagmm,
I'm so glad you like my cards! With the bar soap I made horizontal lines on the top part of the card - hoping it would turn out looking like clouds, and on the bottom of the card I made vertical lines - hoping that they would resemble grass. As for the glue I just sort of smeared it around leaving some parts bare without glue.
I always have a hard time with Backgrounds, so this was a fun and experimental swap for me. Glad I found it! Thanks!

Welcome to our new experimenters! I’ve not been on for a few days. I have received a couple of envelopes for this swap but haven’t opened them yet. I plan on getting caught up on mail tomorrow and will update the first post with what I’ve received.

How did everyone’s holiday go? Did anyone have any creative or different ways of celebrating due to COVID? We celebrated my moms 70th birthday on 12/19 immediately followed by Christmas for my side of the family. We rented a community building so we could all be together but stay socially distant. Both my brother and sister-in-law work for the school district and one nephew works at a bank. They are each around dozens of people every day so that’s a lot of potential exposure. Then we had my mother-in-law over for Christmas Eve and she stayed the night and spent Christmas morning with us. Finally, today we hosted Christmas dinner for my husband’s side of the family. On that side, everyone except my husband works from home.

I’m hoping to have the Christmas tree put away before my oldest heads back home on 1/3. My Christmas village collection will stay up as winter decor for a few more weeks. I love the Christmas village and all the little vignettes and all the trees (is that wired?). Does anyone else have a Christmas village? I’d love to see a couple pics!

Finally got through my stack of mail today. I received cards from RaineyDay, Elliejaybird, dnewton972 and artbymee. Such wonderful pieces of artwork! I used glossy photo paper and Pearl alcohol inks and made these.

The hostess card has the extra pieces on the background, you can see they are pieced together. It is the purple one, in the photo with the other more neutral metallics.

I made this card for the current art a thon using the scraps from the more neutral metallic scraps. It is up for trade.

Once again I used a swap as an excuse to buy new art materials!
I bought assorted colors of MULBERRY PAPER and tore and collaged them in various ways.
The first three are collaged over acrylic paint on canvas (repurposed old paintings....)
For the last one I added a layer of loosely woven cotton before the mulberry paper. Texture. Texture! TEXTURE!
I had fun.

Well, something strange happened. I mailed out my cards and the post office returned the envelope to me this past Saturday. I've run into this problem with a few holiday cards I sent out as well. Because the time is very close and the mail has been extraordinarily slow, I'm going to withdraw since I can't guarantee my cards will arrive in time.

In the last few days I received cards from ikcimerk, TerryHEdwards, Luckycat479 and Carol.

Here are my cards. I'm hoping they arrive to you in time!

For these I used bleach to paint on variously colored papers, and then embellished with markers. It was a bit of an experiment. The bleach had no effect at all on some of the paper scraps I tried, and it was also interesting to see what colors resulted from the ones which did bleach.

Your cards look great!! Did the fumes from the bleach bother you at all? I might try that technique if it's not overwhelming! I can't wait to see your cards in real life. They should be here in plenty of time. Most envelopes are only taking 5 days to arrive at the longest.

Thanks! Also I'm glad to hear the mail is moving a bit faster again.

I did make sure that my room was ventilated and I only had a small amount of bleach sitting out in my paint cup. The fumes weren't too bad. That being said, it may have been a better idea to do them across two sessions instead of all in one go.

Forgot to say that my cards have been on their way since I was down in Melbourne at the start of the month. I have only just been able to load them into my Gallery.
I had originally wanted to try my Ranger 'Lift off' ink - supposedly designed to lift off alcohol ink with a stamp, leaving a negative image behind. The ink on the stamp can then be used to make a new stamping. The negative image didn't work at all and the new stamping only worked for cards 1 and 2.http://www.atcsforall.com/forum/gallery/images/3190/small/2_IMG_0514.jpg

I then decided to see what happened if I put down a row of Blending solution, dropped in some alcohol ink and blew through a straw. Much happier with these results.http://www.atcsforall.com/forum/gallery/images/3190/small/2_IMG_0515.jpg http://www.atcsforall.com/forum/gallery/images/3190/small/2_IMG_0516.jpg

Ok creative friends- it’s time for an honest look at my initial paint pouring experience. This is my 3rd year of hosting this swap and my 3rd year of saying I want to try paint pouring. Well,I finally did it. I bought a set of 32 small bottles of ready to pour paints. As I said in the first post- this is a no judgment swap. Here are my experiments and what I learned.

220866 I call this one “unattended kids with ketchup and mustard packets”
I learned that when the box says ready to pour but it seems too thick, it probably is. Trust your gut.

220867 I call this one “streaks of dish soap”
I learned that half paint and half water is too much water and that if the bottle looks pink but says purple, it’s pink. There is no mesmerizing color change like there is with glazing pottery.

I also learned that it’s important to measure and use the proper amount of paint. Overall I had a good time but was not pleased with the result. They’ll make some fine backgrounds. I can’t wait to experiment with more paint pouring!

Also, if anyone wants one please let me know, I’d be happy to toss one into your returns!

I live in ARIZONA, so my SAD isn't as bad as others. I seldom have issues at all. But I did notice it in Jan the first few years I live here. I also notice it more on cloudy days. Phoenix, has 300 sunny days a year. My mother, and my son both notice issues with it too. My mom lives in Michigan, where I grew up. I noticed it much more growing up in Michigan.

I remember at the beginning talking about printing out some images or words on acetate sheets. I did finally do it for some Continuous Random Round Robin cards. I printed a recipe to put over oysters.

Last night I went through and gave you rocks to players to who posted their backgrounds.

TODAY I got my swap. I will do you rocks for those I got backgrounds from

I was doing the your rocks for this group because I wanted to do you rocks for all my swappers in my recent swap, and the system needed me to smooch up to someone else for awhile. hahaha
