Found Poetry/Prose Swap - Due November 20th, 2021

My last Found Poetry Swap was so much fun I decided to post another. :-)
Here goes!

For this swap we will all become poetry FINDERS.

There are two types of found poetry and either is perfect for this swap:

1. Collage poetry - poetry made from words or short phrases cut from various sources and recombined into something new.

Examples: 225669 dnewton972 225670 Marie

2. Blackout poetry - poetry found within one piece of text— framed by highlighting certain words or short phrases, or blacking out / covering all others.

Examples: 225671 CiCiCreates 225672 Sweetgypsy

Poems or prose may be uplifting, regretful, amusing, scary or snarky.... to name a few.
As always I will do my best to exchange type and effort for the same from what is submitted.

Requirements:

1. Cards must be a standard ATC size (2.5 x 3.5 inches). Rounded edges are fine but no other shapes.
2. All cards must be original and different. No duplicates.
3. No 3 dimensional embellishments.
4. Please send in only work that you would be happy to receive.
5. Cards must have a sturdy background... heavy card-stock or better.
6. Each card must be in an individual plastic sleeve.
7. Label cards with the swap name and your username, real name and location.
8. A host card will be admired and treasured but is in no way required.
9. Please leave iTrader for swap host and you Rocks for the players whose cards you receive.

Mailing:

1.US players please include a self-addressed, stamped envelope or large mailing label and one forever stamp.

2. International players please send $1 or a US Global stamp and a large mailing label. I will provide envelopes.

I think that covers everything! Who wants to play?

I, on the other hand, am having a heckuva time with this. I think my mind just doesn't work this way. I'm too "literal" or something. I find myself just reading the whole page and not wanting to dismantle the sentences, lol. I won't give up just yet. I have made a card, but it's a sad attempt.

CastleQueen5

Marie
09-16-2021, 02:03 PM
Lisa, I have the opposite issue! I’m so tuned into scanning for phrases that I often slip into that mode instead of reading the book! I scan phrases with magazines as well. So far the newspaper is safe. Oy!

KatieV
09-16-2021, 07:25 PM
To help me not read the book instead of cutting it up, I usually pick something I don’t want to read from the library sale! I’ve got a romance novel and a biography of James Cook.

Sometimes it helps me just to cut words up and then put them in piles: names, nouns, adjectives, etc.

Here are mine:

I will post pics of my finished cards soon. I feel a little like I’m “cheating” because of my source text. I have a wonderful little book of poetry and prose regarding flowers, and it has made this easy and fun for me. Last time, I used some classics by Dickens, which also worked great.

Aw shucks Heather, thanks! I often do pick my favorite for a hostess card, unless I need to pass my favorite on in order to have enough ‘equivalent’ trades. Then I send my favorite out and pick another. It’s not fun unless everyone has fun. :)

To be honest, I tend to pick the card that might be chunky, for a hostess card. Mainly I do that to prevent mail damage. It happens too often.

Marie
09-18-2021, 08:46 PM
Chunky cards are a problem with mailing, and the can damage the facing card if you put them in your albums too. I keep those in a art basket and rifle through it for inspiration or a pick- me - up.

CiCiCreates
09-18-2021, 09:00 PM
I often choose a chunky card as my host card, just so it won’t have to go through the mail again. I also can’t resist picking my favorite, then sometimes feel guilty about it, and the artist who made it tells me to “go for it”. So I do! Also, I try to remember that not very often, but every now and then someone will designate the card the want to be the host card. I always look on the back because it could be very embarrassing to select my own card when they had another all picked out for me!

Marie
09-18-2021, 09:14 PM
That’s a very good point Carol. It’s important to always check the back. I’ve had that happen where a player actually checked my profile and made a card based on it. How nice is that?? Of course it was my favorite! :)

Advice From a Gecko:

Iím trying to use the technique where you measure out your 2 1/2 x 3 1/2 rectangle on the paper and have to find your words right there in that section of text. Itís much more challenging, but also very satisfying.

A cheap suitcase full of gentlemen. Hilarious!

Mine are done. I had to get a new computer so I don't have my scanner set up to work with it yet (don't know if I'll be able to do it actually--my work IT guy helped me last time). I'll try to take photos once the sun it up! If I can't get good pics I'll mail them out this weekend anyway.

And here is number three as well! I didn’t think I’d get her finished tonight so I’m pretty stoked to see that I did! Yay!

This one isn’t really ‘pure’ blocking as I blocked out the top text, but the last line was glued in from another page. Artist license, right? ;)

Welcome AncientPlanter! How do you teach found poetry in class? Do you give your students old book pages? Xerox copies of book pages? Use magazines? I’ll bet they love the exercise. Once you start found poetry you never look at books the same way! Same as once you start drawing and painting you see shapes and shading everywhere, right?

I’ll get you signed up now. :)

Marie - I usually give magazines or photocopies of pages from books (I do this with ESL students). My mom taught high school English and she did the same thing, as did my own high school English teacher. It's so much fun! And here are the ones I did (using a story in a large print Readers Digest).

Oh golly Colleen! Those are great! I wonder if the original story was set in England ( roofless red busses) or Washington DC? I wondered how a teacher would approach this topic… the whole marking in books thing and all. I wish we’d done this at any of my schools! Or my kids schools! We all just discovered found poetry here at AFA.
I love this place!

Wow Stick! Your cards are so determinedly hopeful! Love the messages and the art! Blackout is my favorite form of found poetry. It’s so ‘think inside the box’ and find every.single.thing that’s there. Look deeeeep!
I have to admit to a combo card though… on my error card I used block out but also pasted in a whole line from the next page….
This for is so mind stretching!!!

Marie - I looked at the story again and it's an article based on the most physically pleasant counties ranked in the U.S. The most pleasant is Ventura County, CA, where my family lives (I grew up in the neighboring county of Santa Barbara so I know Ventura well). The article was written by a reporter on the Washington Post who lived in MD. It's about the last county on the list, Red Lake County in the northwest corner of Minnesota. No actual lakes, no hills, hot summers, brutal winters, "home to twice as many cows as people." :twitcy: The county invited him to visit to prove it's not the worst county in America. He ended up loving it so much that he moved his family there. Nice story, as most all of the Readers Digest stories are!

That is seriously cool and something I'd never considered. The first shape that really appeals to me would be kids' building blocks. Also, when I was a kid, we had these beautiful wood eggs my mom found somewhere, just plain wood, not Easter, and that would also be cool....or mediation stones......hmmm...possibilities abound.

Marie
10-29-2021, 02:37 PM
The eggs could become meditation stones once they were covered and sealed. I love the blocks idea!

I may. I never did get enough made this time. Of the two I did do, one is more snarky than poetry and the other one just is. I'll post them to my available gallery. I love the idea and challenge of the blackout style but found it to be challenging than I expected. I'll try to make some ahead in anticipation for the next swap. I've enjoyed seeing all the pics that've been posted.

Marie
11-02-2021, 11:27 PM
Trini70 I love the challenge of the blackout style too! One thing that helps me is this: I took a clear piece of plastic ( I think it was from a box of greeting cards) and cut it to ATC size. Now I can slide it around on the print to see exactly what section of the words I’d have available to use and choose the exact section that has what I want. Then I can mark around the edges of the plastic form to be sure I cut out exactly that section of print.
