View Full Version : Walk like an Egyptian! - Due January 22nd, 2023

11-11-2022, 05:28 AM
Swap Due Date: Due January 22, 2023
Signup/Withdraw Date: Due January 22, 2023
Number of ATCs: 3 for 3 only
Number of Participants: Unlimited
Medium: Any and all media and techniques are welcome

I have received so much positive feedback about the Tutankhamun stamp many of you have received from me with my mail. This has encouraged me to host another swap.

The theme is Ancient Egypt, so include anything with hieroglyphics, Ancient Egyptian wall art, ancient monuments, gods and goddesses... there is plenty of scope.

Cards can be hand drawn or painted (my personal favourite), collage, postage stamps, really anything goes so long as some effort has gone into it. (No white backgrounds, please). Cards should be substantial so if you use paper, please back it with card.

Swap Requirements ~
* All cards should be standard 3.5” x 2.5”
* This swap is 3 for 3 only. An extra card for the host is welcome, but completely optional.
* Cards must be original. Send work into which you put time, imagination and care.
* Please use only small, light embellishments on your cards, please.
* Please protect your cards with plastic sleeves.
* Mail by 7th January 2023

Mailing Information ~
* Include username, real name, your state/country and the swap name on the back of all cards - and put username and swap name on all envelopes sent.
* I am in France so most people will be International Participants - Please send a medium sized mailing label (I will provide envelopes) and either an International Forever stamp (not attached to the envelope) or a dollar.

Please PM me for my address when you are ready to mail your cards. Please post in this thread when you are sending your cards out, that way I can keep track of the cards when they were mailed. Any late cards will be returned.

When you receive your returns, please leave I-Trader for your swap host and rep points for the artists of the cards you receive.

Have fun!

I’m lurking. Do you have a recommended “mail by” date for participants from the US?

11-11-2022, 02:35 PM
LOVE Ancient Egypt! And all the many images are unmistakable as to country and era! Please sign me up.

11-11-2022, 02:49 PM
Jezebelle: it takes at least 10days to get from the US to France. I guess a mail by date of 7th January should be safe.

Vicki Z and CiCiCreates - welcome! I'll sign you up. :)

11-11-2022, 04:32 PM
I'm in!

11-12-2022, 06:24 AM

I want to play. At some point in my youth I wanted to be an Egyptologist even though I was born and raised in south America.

11-13-2022, 05:09 PM
Emmadreamstar and leydab, you are both very welcome!

11-14-2022, 12:53 PM
lurking....definitely need some more Egyptian inspired art in my collection

11-14-2022, 04:33 PM
Lurkers are always welcome!

11-15-2022, 08:03 AM
I’ve been silently lurking but I’ll commit. Egypt was one of my favorite places to visit. It will be hard to pick among all the possibilities. I’ll probably challenge myself and NOT do the sphinx or Giza pyramids.

11-15-2022, 08:22 AM
I think this swap should definitely be calling your name, Jo! Can’t wait to see what you decide to illustrate.

11-15-2022, 08:49 AM
I am so glad to have you join the swap jo. I knew you would have lots of material. :)

11-15-2022, 10:01 AM
I'm kicking myself for having tossed out my set of rubber stamps featuring all of the hieroglyphs when I moved. But on the plus side, I kept my massive book Egypt: 4000 Years of Art. Talk about a reference source!

Di, I just excitedly noticed the beautiful stamp you put on the envelope containing my returns from the bird swap - itís Tutankhamen, and I will definitely use it!

11-15-2022, 12:34 PM
Wonderful, CiCiCreates! The stamp is what inspired the swap :)

11-15-2022, 08:04 PM
My first card: Bastet

11-15-2022, 08:38 PM
Here are my cards - no Giza, no Sphinx, no Egyptian gods.

236318 Bent Pyramid: Located in the royal necropolis of Dashur, about 25 miles south of Cairo. This pyramid is intermediate between the step-sided and smooth pyramids. The pyramid was built about 2600 BCE for Pharaoh Sneferu.

236319 Cat Mummy: From Abydos, from about 200 BCE. The cat was regarded as the animal of the goddess Bastet. People expressed their piety by paying for the mummification of a deceased temple cat.

236320 Hippopotamus, probably from a tomb at Dra Abu- el-Naga, about 1800 BCE. The statues were probably considered protective. This one is about 4 3/4 inches high.

236321 Mirror Case from tomb of Tutankhamum in Valley of Kings, from 1327 BCE. One of the Egyptian words for mirror was ankh. The standard meaning of ankh was "life" or "to live".

11-16-2022, 04:46 AM
Wow! What beautiful cards, dina54 and jo.on.the.go!

11-16-2022, 04:50 AM
I used to belong to the Manchester Ancient Egypt Society when I lived in the UK. We had so many knowlegeable members who gave tremendous lectures. I went with them on a holiday and we had access to many places not open to the general public such as archeological digs and tombs. It was fascinating.

11-16-2022, 07:00 AM
Where I grew up in San Jose California the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum was right across the street from the junior high school I attended. It is the largest Egyptian museum outside of Egypt, or at least it was at the time. I remember visiting it many times and being fascinated by the human mummy, the cat mummy, the scarab and other jewelry, and the life-size (dead size ?!) replica of a pharaoh’s tomb that was large enough to walk into. The last time I visited, about 1990, right before I moved out of the state, I was disappointed to learn that their cat mummy had been X-rayed and there was no cat inside. Apparently at the temples the priests were just taking the patrons’ money and pretending to mummify some cats. Anyway, I have always been fascinated by ancient Egypt from the time I first visited the museum, and that prompted me to tour Egypt about 10 years ago.

11-16-2022, 01:52 PM
Second card: Anubis

11-16-2022, 02:18 PM
Love both your god/goddess cards, Dina! You are on a roll.

11-16-2022, 03:25 PM
Another fabulous cvard, Dina!

11-16-2022, 06:27 PM

11-16-2022, 08:22 PM
Third card: Jeweled Scarab (colors are much sharper IRL)

11-16-2022, 08:30 PM
Gorgeous! Love all the shading, which creates a very realistic piece of ancient jewelry.

11-17-2022, 10:07 AM
Love them all, Dina.

11-17-2022, 01:36 PM
All done Please sign me up
The background on each card is actual papyrus paper that I saw being made in Sicily. And while it primarily grows in the Mediterranean there is a small grove in Sicily. It was fascinating to see

11-17-2022, 02:59 PM
236343 Fourth and final card: Head of Tutankhamun.
Keep your choice for a Host Gift. Please PM your address, thanks

11-17-2022, 04:07 PM
Brilliant cards, Laffqueen.
And a wonderful set, Dina.

I'm already so impressed with the cards you are posting!

11-17-2022, 04:08 PM
Dina, I love every one of your cards, so well done! And Laffqueen, so great that you were able to make your cards on real papyrus paper, and to see it being made.

11-17-2022, 04:42 PM
Dina love your cards but that last one is my fave

So much great art so far! I've got two cards done and ideas for two more. So please sign me up as well.

The first two are goddesses. Taweret - Goddess of childbirth and fertility. The second is Nephthys associated with temple ritual, mourning, and beer.

Wonderful cards, pancake machine. I'll sign you up.

11-18-2022, 12:04 PM
Wow pancake machine - how wonderful to know that the Egyptians were enlightened enough to have a goddess of beer. I went back and learned that she didn’t object to unlimited consumption of beer. This might be one goddess to worship! I wouldn’t complain if I received that card of her!

11-19-2022, 05:12 AM
Noted, jo.on.the.go. ;)

You need to remember that in ancient times cats were worshipped as gods, and they have not forgotten, even if we may have.

Cats, being associated with the goddess Bastet, were fed, protected, cared for, and revered in Ancient Egypt.
When one of the Temple cats died, people expressed their sympathy and piety by paying a fixed amount to cover the costs of mummification of the deceased temple cat. Numerous Temple Cats have been found in archaeological digs.
.....Unfortunately for the legend, in1990 one of the cat mummies in the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum was x-rayed and there was no cat inside the mummy wrappings. What a cat-tastrophy

Alright - I have my final two cards done.

Takushit Statue - Egyptian Princess. One of the most beautiful Egyptian statues I've ever seen.

Inside the Pyramid: This card does open. You can swing the pyramid up and get a look at a map of the inside of a pyramid. Then, you can swing that up and look at a room. You can also look at the mummy inside the sarcophagus. The map is of an actual pyramid. However, the room isn't an actual room in a pyramid, although everything featured can be found in a tomb.

12-02-2022, 08:20 AM
Pancake machine Those pyramids are wonderful - so clever! When in Egypt I was fortunate enough to go inside a few pyramids (and also King Tut’s tomb): all unforgettable experiences.

12-02-2022, 08:26 AM
PM, I just love that pyramid card, it is so clever and creative!

12-03-2022, 07:04 AM
Awesome work, pancake machine!

12-04-2022, 04:00 PM
Nice to see you lurking, Tandy.

12-04-2022, 05:25 PM
1962 - San Jose Calif. - while in college I spent many happy hours at the Egyptian Museum. Fast forward to 2002 - we spent 3 weeks in Egypt; many adventures in Cairo, Luxor, and Aswan. The trip of a lifetime. While there I bought some papyrus (probably fake) bookmarks, and, as often happens, they got filed away somewhere. I finally found them and incorporated them into my ATCs.

12-04-2022, 05:27 PM
The stamps are duplicates from my collection; they are 100-130 years old. I didn't have any of the pretty new ones to spare.

12-04-2022, 06:01 PM
I love every one of your cards!!

12-05-2022, 06:13 AM
Gorgeous, StitchinWitch!

12-05-2022, 08:35 AM

12-07-2022, 04:43 PM
Wonderful. I'll keep an eye out for them, StitchinWitch.

12-10-2022, 12:19 AM
Question - i wanted to do my set of cards like this: example card (https://www.instagram.com/p/BwsNCq_Bh2i/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=)
Would the burnt edges of the card be okay or would that make them invalid for the swap as they would no longer be exactly 2.5 x 3.5"?

12-11-2022, 12:02 PM
It doesn't look like you've lost much from the edges, so as far as I'm concerned, it should be OK. What do others think?

12-11-2022, 12:38 PM
Yes i only trimmed a small amount for effect. Here is a photo of the 4 cards i planned to draw on with a non-trimmed card on the bottom for comparison...236690

12-11-2022, 02:22 PM
Well, Emily and Di, since you asked, I personally love this look! It is wonderful for the theme. And if the edges are just burned in a little bit, there is probably one area across that is 2 1/2” and one area vertical that is 3 1/2”, and that is the only requirement for the shaped cards, that the widest and longest points meet the measurements. Again, the look is just great!

12-13-2022, 01:10 PM
Mail Call: LaffQueen, your marvellous cards have arrived today. :)

12-13-2022, 10:17 PM
Got my cards drawn, gonna work on coloring them to have them mailed out by the weekend hopefully! Ty for the confirmation on the card style being okay!

12-14-2022, 01:53 AM
I like the burned edges of the cards

12-14-2022, 05:54 AM
I look forward to seeing your cards, emmadreamstar.

I like the edges too, StitchinWitch.

My cards just went in the mail.
Happy holidays!

12-16-2022, 04:14 PM
Wow! Are these 3D, or is your shadow effect just that good?

12-16-2022, 05:33 PM
My first two cards for the swap. Both are collaged images, the blue hippo was hand drawn and painted by me, then cut and glued on. The King Tut card began with the postage stamp and includes gold foil sun rays.

12-16-2022, 06:23 PM
Wow! Are these 3D, or is your shadow effect just that good?
Hi Jezebelle,
they are 3D. No way I can pull the shade. The Pharaoh was already a struggle...

12-17-2022, 08:40 AM
Wonderful cards, leydab and CiCiCreates. I can't wait to see them.

12-18-2022, 09:41 AM
stitchinWitch - it looks as if we've been crossing paths over the years. As I previously said, the Rosicrucian Museum was right across the street from where I went to junior high school. I grew up in San Jose, but did not go to college at San Jose State. And of course we both went to Egypt. I, too, had some of those papyrus bookmarks. But while in Cairo we went to a shop that sold papyrus paintings, and I purchased some real papyrus for painting upon: not cheap. I have hardly used it because I'm afraid I won't make something worthy!

12-18-2022, 11:41 AM
My cards just went in the mail.
Happy holidays!

Wow your set is soo cool! Love them all!

12-18-2022, 11:50 AM
Here is my set! Will be in the mail tomorrow!

12-18-2022, 12:43 PM
Emmadreamstar, your cards all look wonderful!! Bastet is my (slight) favorite.

12-18-2022, 06:46 PM
Use that papyrus! You are a great artist; I love your watercolors. It's kind of like all those pretty embroidered pillowcases my grandmother did and never used that ended up at goodwill. If you don't do something with it it who know where it will end up.

12-19-2022, 05:46 PM
My last two cards for the swap: Nefertiti from the carved quartzite head at the Cairo Museum, and alabaster perfume and ointment bottles, along with a cosmetics jar in yellow faience, all from the Amarna era, done in watercolors and markers, cut and glued onto the backgrounds.

12-20-2022, 12:27 AM
Great set cici

12-21-2022, 04:56 PM
I'm working on mine, with the hopes to mail by Monday.
