View Full Version : The Sweet Tweet Bird Art Doll Swap~Due June 5, 2023

nanner
03-12-2023, 08:33 PM
Due date: Monday, June 5th
Sign up/withdraw: no deadline, just communicate
Number of art pieces: 3/3
Number of players: 20

Join us as we “feather our nest” with some bird art dolls…just in time for Spring!

Simple Rules to Swap Success:

1. Open media: hand-drawn or painted, collage, mixed media, assemblage, etc. Make them sturdy, whether they’re made of paper or parts. They can be flat or 3-dimensional. Moving parts, brads and embellishments are great. Open theme: realistic, illustrated, cute, bizarro, and everything in between. All feathered friends are welcome!

2. 3/3 Birds: This is about quality, not just quantity. Take your time with this to create pieces you're proud to send in (no rush jobs!) Keep the total piece under 7" or so. Hangers and/or dangles are A-ok. Sign your work with your username on each piece.

3. Wrap each bird individually and pack your pieces safely in a bubble envelope, which I will re-use. Include a large return address label. PM for my address (in Costa Mesa.)

4. Postage: Please include the same amount of postage in $US dollars/PayPal that it takes to mail the art to me. For US participants, this could be $5 or more, depending on the size/weight of your finished art. I highly recommend sending your art with tracking information. I'll be sending all of your returns with tracking info. If postage makes it cost-prohibitive for you to join, send a private message to me, and we'll work something out.

5. Show and tell: Please upload piccys of your art in the thread. That’s one of the best parts! Hostess gifts or extra postage are always appreciated.

6. Important Note Regarding Rep Points and iTrader: I’ve been hosting on this site for over a decade now (gulp!) and while Rep/iTraders are optional and most players graciously leave them…I just cannot condone players disregarding them. Rep/iTraders are a way to thank players and your host for all the time, energy and effort that goes into art trading. If you are unable or unwilling to leave these pieces of feedback, I kindly ask that you don’t join in the swap.

Some fine feathered friend examples: Le Blog de Gabistella, Jeanette Janson and an Oaxacan-inpsired owl from nanner.

This glitzy hummingbird was made of "glitter cardstock" in lavender, emerald, and violet. 6 2/3" wing tip to tail, no articulation because I thought the bling was enough. Wings and tail include rhinestones and silver ribbons. beak is bass wire. That emerald glitter cardstock is gorgeous when the light hits it right!

Sounds pretty cool, Nan, can’t wait to see! You’ve allowed us so much time here (thankfully) that I’ve been pretty quiet, completing other obligations, etc., thinking I have all this time (need to be careful of that mindset - lol). Plans are in place for my three remaining birdies, several steps and stages, I will be starting them soon.

nanner

You don't have to load it into your gallery...you can add it into a post in the thread. If you save it in the lowest/smallest format, it usually works for uploads. Try saving it small, and then upload it from the "Go Advanced" button, then add it with "manage attachments" on the next screen.

I have one done but before I do more I want to be sure I'm doing the correct thing. My birds are chipboard covered with fabric & fibers, one dimensional, not padded, no articulated parts, so I'm not sure if mine qualify as "art doll". Please, let me know if I'm on the right track or not.

catladybj
04-25-2023, 01:05 PM
Thanks, Nan, I will try that a little bit later. I still haven't gotten to the post office, I have not gotten the birdies packaged yet. I made a quick trip to the PO last week but didn't have everything ready to mail. And now it might be another day or two, tried to give one of my kitties a bath yesterday, it did not go well. I have a very nasty cat bite on my left hand, and it is extremely stiff. I did go to the urgent Care, got Rx for antibiotics.
I guess I'll have to find a a groomer that has a pair of gauntlets to give her a bath!

catladybj
04-25-2023, 01:07 PM
Well something else I haven't mastered after all these years on AFA, getting the quote to go along with the reply. For anybody reading this later and wondering what I'm talking about, Nan told me how to go about getting things uploaded to the thread. Which is something else I haven't had much luck with, but I will try that a little bit later today.

CiCiCreates
04-25-2023, 03:08 PM
Bonnie, I’m glad you went to Urgent-care for some antibiotics! As a cat person, I’m sure you are aware that bites from a cat can get infected easily. My late husband found that out. The doctor says it happens frequently, their little mouths seem to hoard lots of germs!

catladybj
04-25-2023, 04:41 PM
I hear you CiCi. Thx. Even with taking augmentin there was a little bit of pus this morning. I was trying to get her out of the cat carrier...she came out holding onto my hand...with her teeth. Felt like it took forever but I finally got her off of me. All my cats have come off the street, and she is the fiercest. I lay down on the bed, she's right up there with her head in my neck purring-but once I put try to put two hands on her it's all over.

Looks good to me, LL. Here's the swap info again for your reference... :D

1. Open media: hand-drawn or painted, collage, mixed media, assemblage, etc. Make them sturdy, whether they’re made of paper or parts. They can be flat or 3-dimensional. Sorry to hear about your kitty situation. I have raised dozens of kitties over the years and feel your pain, literally and figuratively. For uploading photos, and other "how-to's", check out this thread on AFA (http://www.atcsforall.com/forum/showthread.php?970-HOW-TO-Want-to-know-How-To-Check-here-first!). The admin's here are also more than happy to help with any questions.

To quote something, you click on the "quote" blue button that's at bottom right of whatever post you'd like to respond to in the thread. You can even delete portions of the original quote to zero in on what you'd like to address. I often remove the photos others have attached (so that the art won't be accidentally attributed to me, if I'm commenting on the art with that quote.)

nanner
04-25-2023, 06:41 PM
Thanks, nanner. I totally missed the flat or 3-dimensional part.

No worries. I tend to keep the parameters nicely wide open so that artists can have free creative license to work within their inspiration and wheelhouse. As long as your first birdie fits within the sizing (under 7" or so,) then you can proceed with feathering your nest.

nanner

My first bird has hatched but it is slightly larger than 7 inches. Is that ok?

nanner
04-25-2023, 08:12 PM
Sounds just fine, Jen. Around 7" is good, just not much bigger (it needs to fit okay into a bubble envie with returns.) And see that tutorial I posted for Bonnie about pictures (post #102.) It is definitely worth the time investment to post piccys to the thread. It's one of the best parts of this process! Seeing the art as it's created. :D

They're beautiful, LL. You must have quite the fiber collection to be able to coordinate the colors like that. So lovely!

LindyLu
05-01-2023, 11:27 AM
I do have a nice fiber collection. I don't sew but I love all things fabric & fiber & I found this lady on Etsy & went nuts buying fibers from her about 5-6 years ago. She sells them in coordinated colorways & textures so each bundle has different types of fibers. I have bags of them but I hate to use them because they're so pretty. It's time for me to let them live in art form.

nanner
05-01-2023, 12:47 PM

Felt like it took forever but I finally got her off of me. All my cats have come off the street, and she is the fiercest. I lay down on the bed, she's right up there with her head in my neck purring-but once I put try to put two hands on her it's all over.

Oh, I feel for you catladybj. Most of my cats have been ferals along a wide spectrum. Bob was nearly dead when he arrived. I nursed him back to health, kept him inside (except when he literally broke the screen door one time) and he'd sit quietly on the sofa with me and all of a sudden he'd leap on my hand and clench it between his rather large and very strong jaws. Never punctured me but I learned real quick to leave him be and he'd stop. I've now got a feral who loves for me to pet him and even pick him up but not hold him for long but he loves when I pet him.

There are some amazing birds posted here. Well, all of the ones I've seen that have been posted are just truly magical. I fell behind but will be working to finish my birds this week and will shoot for mailing them next week.

My birds finally flew the coop Friday.
So they are winging their way to California. I wish I could post pictures but I've had no luck. I had my daughter take pictures with her phone and send them to me; I tried with those but the site always says my photos are too large.
Nan, if you want to take a shot at taking pictures and posting them I have no problem with that. But I don't expect you to.
I have not felt very well the last few weeks, I got a pretty bad cat bite, which is mostly healed up, tho still swollen a bit. Misty did not want to take a bath.
The Doc put me on two antibiotics because it got infected, and I'm still suffering side effects from them. But I'm okay, just plodding on! : )
Ain't Life grand!?!

Nanner, I'm so sorry but I'm going to have to withdraw. Everything collapsed last week when my Jack cat got very, very ill. He's taking up nearly all of my time right now. I look forward to the next swap. I just didn't finish all of my birds and can't get to the USPS this week and am not sure that the package would arrive in time. So sorry.
