View Full Version : Watercolor Paper Playtime Swap - Deadline change - Due in my hands August 21st

Watercolor Paper Playtime Swap - Due August 21st (deadline changed)

Sign up date - August 15th
Withdraw date - August 21st
Swap Due Date - In my hands by August 21st (deadline changed)
Number of Cards - 3 for 3 or 6 for 6
Number of participants - Unlimited

This swap is for anyone that wants to explore different watercolor papers. I recently hosted a watercolor paper swap where everyone sent in 12 different types of watercolor paper blanks and everyone got 12 different watercolor paper blanks back.

So now its time to play!!

Swap Guidelines:

Use 3 different watercolor papers.
The painting should be the same subject or at least similar so that you can really get a feel for the difference in quality and paper type.
Please do not add bulky embellishments.
Rice paper may need to be mounted onto an acid free base card stock. Use the floppy rule: hold onto a corner of the card, if the paper flops over, its not thick enough and should be mounted.

Theme - Artist's Choice
The painting must be your original. Watercolor should be the main medium used, however you may add to it with other mediums as long as you can still see the watercolor effects. I will return cards that are the wrong size, not to swap guidelines, etc.

Strict Deadline!!! I will be having surgery end of August, so will mail the returns before that date. Please allow for adequate mailing time. Two weeks for international is not uncommon.

Mailing Requirements:

All participants -

Please send a clearly written self addressed label only. Please do not send a bubble or oversized envelope. I will not use them (they cost more in postage).
All cards should be sent in plastic penny sleeves. Please include your username and swap name on your envelope.
Be sure that your username is on the back of your ATCs.
US participants - please include $1 for postage (it costs a minimum of 96 cents from Canada to the US).
Other International - If you have access to one US dollar bill I'd be grateful, but it is not required. I will cover your postage.
Canadian participants - include 1 52 cents stamp for 3 cards, 2 for 6 cards.
I will post your feedback when I receive your cards.
When you're ready to send, please PM me if you need my address.

Swap Gallery:
I would like to be able to add the submissions to this swap to the new swap gallery. I will use the photos posted to the site either in the gallery or in the thread to create the images needed. If you do not have access to a scanner and would like me to scan your cards for you, I will be happy to do so. Please just ask. Also, let me know if you do NOT want your cards put in the swap gallery. I will respect your wishes.

Gotcha down Sue.

07-03-2008, 09:37 AM
I'm thinking I need to move up the deadline of this swap a week or so. In my hands by Aug 21 or so. My Dr has scheduled me for surgery Aug 29 and I would like to get this out before then.

Any objections?

07-03-2008, 11:21 PM
I'm fine with it.

07-03-2008, 11:59 PM
OOH, sorry Mary. I am gonna hafta withdraw. I liked the other deadline, but I TOTALLY understand and wish you a successful surgery and recovery.:wubclub:

07-04-2008, 06:53 AM
OK Sue, thanks for letting me know.

07-09-2008, 10:51 PM
My cards are done. I made an extra one for the hostess. Could you PM me your address?

07-10-2008, 06:44 AM
Those look great! How did the diff papers work? Which ones did you use and what is your favorite?

07-10-2008, 11:26 PM
I used 3 types of paper: 90lb Canson, 113lb Fabriano and 130lb Strathmore (used that one for 2 cards.) The 130 is too textured for me and the 90 is too thin for the amount of water I use so I prefer the 113.

07-14-2008, 09:44 AM
Well, I've started playing with my watercolor blanks. Not for this swap, but for another one, but it is an interesting exercise trying to do a similar subject on diff papers.

Here is one on watercolor canvas and one on Strathmore 80 lb.

07-14-2008, 03:03 PM
Can I join please? I missed the paper swap (boo hoo), but I have a few different types here which need messing up with paint!

07-14-2008, 03:33 PM
I'll but you down BrightSpark. Glad to have you along for the playtime.

07-15-2008, 12:00 AM
OK...you can finally sign me up!
I wanted to make sure I was able to get them done...and since they are, we're good to go.

This was pretty interesting. I went with koi for these since I'd been working on some for other projects.
Top left: Arches 140 Top right: Strathmore 140
Bottom left: Yupo Bottom right: Windsor Newton Cotman 200

Surprised as I was...I enjoyed the challenge of the Yupo. It was harder for me to work with, but it was really fun watching the movement of the paint on that one.

07-15-2008, 03:59 AM
I had finished my cards and before I sealed the envenlope I went to the post office this affternoon and got a international reply coupon and sealed the envie and then put a $2.00 stamp on it . Gave it (with a whole heap of other trades) to my son to put in the post box only to get home and realise that it does have the address on it. I am going to try and get it back but I may have to start again. bugger!!!!

07-15-2008, 06:42 AM
Wanda, those are lovely!!!! Glad you joined.

07-15-2008, 06:44 AM
Kylie, I'm confused. What does or doesn't have the address on it, the International coupon? Hope you can get it back, whatever it was.

07-15-2008, 06:34 PM
the envelope( with my cards and the couponin it) didn't have the address on them.

07-15-2008, 06:37 PM
Were you able to get them back? I'm surprised the post office didn't notice it.

07-21-2008, 06:24 PM
MissKoolAid, your lovely cards came today. Thank you for the extra!!

07-21-2008, 06:27 PM
No I haven't got it back but I decided to go back to square one and I am nearly done(again)

07-21-2008, 06:29 PM
Thanks for letting me know.

07-22-2008, 05:10 PM
Wanda, I got your cards today. Really lovely! Its interesting to see the subtle differences.

Thanks for the extra!

07-23-2008, 08:44 PM
Glad they've arrived.
Yeah....it's a cool experiment using all the different papers.
Just confirms the fact that not all papers are created equal :)

08-01-2008, 09:11 AM
Just checking in....

I won't be around much for the next week.

It is a 3 day weekend for us, so we'll spend some time at the cottage. Then we have a family event. I will be back from that on Wednesday but late. I'll check in here then and let you know what mail has come in.

Due date in 3 weeks! And remember, they have to be in my hand for mailing out that week.

08-04-2008, 12:06 AM
My cards are going in the mail tomorrow. While I almost always tend to use 140# cold press watercolor paper when I paint in watercolors, this exercise has shown me that I actually prefer the bristol board. And I definitely don't care much for the canvas paper for watercolor while I do like it for acrylics.

#1 is on 140 cold press watercolornpaper
#2 is on 100# bristol board
#3 is on canvas paper

08-04-2008, 02:42 AM
I posted mine off today!

08-04-2008, 02:51 PM
Thanks Kylie and Patti. Can't wait to see them in hand.

08-05-2008, 04:34 PM
Mine are in the mail today! (I used a tissue box for inspiration!) I'm keeping one, sending 6 for the swap and 1 for the hostess. I had no idea just how much the different papers Differed! This is a great exercise. We should do it again.

08-05-2008, 07:07 PM
Mine will go in the mail tomorrow. I chose 3 x Arches 140lb
Number 1 is Aquarelle Arches 140lb hotpress. I didn't like painting on it, but I do like the finished effect.
Number 2 is Arches 140lb CP Medium, I liked painting on this and I like the finished effect.
Number 3 is Arches 140lb rough. This is the one I like the most.
1.10988 2.10989 3.10990

08-05-2008, 07:11 PM
Well done they are so pretty.

08-06-2008, 08:58 PM
They're all lovely. I've gotten mine finished too. Will post tomorrow. We just got home, I'm exhausted.

So which was your favorite paper? Why did you like it?

08-06-2008, 09:57 PM
It seemed to absorb the paint as I was painting better than the others. Number one was a nightmare, until I got the hang of not having the paint quite so 'wet' as it wasn't being absorbed by the paper as quickly. In fact, what I was doing was painting a petal on the rough (2 or 3) and then doing a petal on 1 before reloading my brush with more water and colour. Hope this makes sense!
I do however prefer the smoother finished look of number one.

Someone once said (I think it was during the DAT) that even if you copy someones work, you make it your own, because you can never make it identical .... here I did three drawings/paintings of one flower and they're not all the same!

08-06-2008, 11:38 PM
What I wanted to do with mine, is incorporate my usual watercolor wash with pen and ink, so I was curious how the diff papers would work that way.

I played with:

rice paper- whoa! this one takes a whole diff technique. So glad ADS sent 3 of em. Final result not too bad tho, and works lovely with my pen and inking.
Saunders Waterford 300 gr HP - I think my fav of this bunch
Crimson and Blake 180 gsm - I didn't like this one at first, but was pleased with the result
some sandpapery stuff that someone sent as a hostess gift - surprised me that I liked it.

08-07-2008, 06:23 AM
Some one sent me some homemade paper and it was really nice to work with. That one I used in the first lot I sent off. lot that got lost.

08-07-2008, 08:34 AM
Here are mine. Guess which one is rice paper. LOL

08-07-2008, 07:30 PM
Very nice
What does LABATYD stand for?

08-07-2008, 09:23 PM
Kylie, it means Life's a bitch and then you die. I think I'm gonna change it. With what's happened with Lisa and AC, it no longer feels appropriate.

08-08-2008, 04:21 AM
OH ok I've Heard one over here by men who say" life's a bitch and then you marry one"
but I like yours better:P

08-08-2008, 04:44 AM
Oh golly , I haven't been the prayer thread and such and I had no Idea her husband was so sick. I know what you mean now. yeah... one get lost for words on occasions like this.

08-08-2008, 10:30 AM
Mary....LOVE your seahorses!!!

08-08-2008, 03:10 PM
I love seahorses! and yours are sooooo lovely.

08-08-2008, 06:54 PM
Thanks guys! I was pleased with how they turned out, tho for awhile there they looked pretty goofy.

And you shoulda seen my first attempts on the rice paper. That was a laugh.

08-09-2008, 05:55 PM
Hard, hard, hard.........

I made it harder for myself of course by deliberately choosing four papers I wouldn't normally work with, and by wanting to cover the whole card with colour, but I thought that way I would get a much better idea of paper properties.

So, in order the papers used are:
1. Bockingford rough - Liked this probably the best.
2. Fabriano Artistico HP - I was surprised I liked this as I am sure I have tried it before and found it way too smooth for me.
3. Whatman NOT - okay.
4. Arches Aquarelle Rough - hated this!

I am going to leave the backs as they are, i.e. a little untidy with paint so you can feel the different papers (I would normally cover with a backing card or paper).

PS the flower is Sneezeweed

08-09-2008, 06:32 PM
yeah some paper I really had to be careful it was almost as if I was using acrylics, because I couldn't have much water on my brush..
bright spark they look amazing.

08-10-2008, 09:32 PM
BrightSpark they look awesome. Can't wait to see them in hand.

08-11-2008, 06:15 PM
Stormarella and Patti, I got both of your envies today.

They turned out great. I'm so pleased with everyone's work on these. It seems like it was a useful exercise. I know it was for me.

And thanks for the extra!

08-15-2008, 10:52 AM
Hubby said I got two more envies of cards, so they're probably for this swap. I don't think I have much else going on right now. Will post later and give iTraders then.

08-15-2008, 09:48 PM
Ibus and Kylie, the packages were yours.

I just love how they turned out. Its so much fun seeing them all. And thank you both for the hostess card/goodies. Kylie, I've never gotten an international coupon before. I hope our postal service knows what to do with it. LOL If not, I'll just send it back to you.

08-15-2008, 09:50 PM
We're just waiting on Bright Spark now.

I'll be gone next week on a holiday. Keep your fingers crossed that we get good weather (we're campiing). By the time I get back they should be here and I'll get everything sent out.

08-26-2008, 09:03 PM
BrightSpark, your cards came today. Silly mailman didn't deliver anything yesterday.

They are great and thank you so much for all the goodies.

08-27-2008, 02:02 PM
All returns were mailed out today noonish. I hope you all like your returns. It was sooooo fun seeing everyone's work.

When I get back sometime next week, I'll put together a page for the swap gallery. It would be interesting to see them all side by side, but I know the pics wouldn't do the slight differences justice. We'll see what I can come up with.

08-27-2008, 03:45 PM
Thanks Mary! And good luck to you too!

08-27-2008, 08:39 PM
