Number of Cards - 9/9
Number of participants - Max 9
Minimum Itrader -10+[/B]

Literature in Living Colour

As an English teacher I love books so I thought how about a chunky book swap with a focus on literature. In this swap you will make colourful literary pages, be they authors, characters or even scenes from books you have read and loved.

Please use as little brown, se

pia, grey, etc. as possible. This is a mixed media swap, so please use at least 3 media on each page. This can include watercolor, acrylic, ink, rubber stamps, collage, brads, charms, fabric, metal, glitter, hand drawing etc.

Creating pages:
* All pages should be 4"x4" and well constructed, preferably of matboard or illustration board, but no lighter than 140 lb. watercolour paper or two sheets of cardstock glued together.

* Please include username, real name, origin (country) and anything else you want to say about yourself on the backs of the pages. Make the backs of the pages interesting and not just plain white, but you don't need to make it as decorative as the front.

* Please include username, real name, origin (country) and anything else you want to say about yourself on the backs of the pages. Make the backs of the pages interesting and not just plain white, but you don't need to make it as decorative as the front.

*Chunky books are called "chunky" because they have fibres or beads, embellishments or whatever hanging off the sides and/or the pages have different textures and chunkiness to them.

*This is a MIXED MEDIA swap, so every page must have at least 3 media, as listed above.

* All cards must be different and distinct. Originals only - no scanned copies or prints.

*Leave 1/2 inch on the left side free of embellishments for binding. You will bind your own pages.

*You will be sending in 9 pages, so you should make 10 if you want to keep one yourself.

Shipping:
All participants must pay their own shipping in this swap. To send anywhere overseas from Australia is $5.00

You can do any of the following to cover your shipping:
-Australian participants can send well-concealed cash, or stamps equivalent to what it was to send to me
International participants can also send well concealed U.S. cash, or paypal.
-Note:*If you are using paypal, please add $0.50 cents extra for the paypal charges.

*Please include username and swap name on all envelopes sent in.

* All pages should be sent in baggies, wrapped in wax paper , or something similar to protect them.

* Please PM for my address when you are ready to send your cards.

Fine Print - All pages are due in my hands by the due date. Late pages will be returned. Please be aware if your pages do not meet the guidelines they will be returned. This includes duplicates and poorly constructed/sloppy pages. Late arrivals or no withdraw communication/no cards will receive neutral feedback.

Include lots of colour and texture in your work.

Thank you for participating in the swap! I look forward to seeing everyone’s artwork!

amyfaerie
06-27-2008, 08:37 PM
YAY 4 KATI! and although i'm answering FOR jonquil, modern literature would definitely be included.

[i'm saying this, knowing how pissed i get when i have adult students who believe that no one who is currently alive is famous for writing books of poetry.]

So, first I was thinking - oh crap, I missed this because it says due June 15th? So, um, can I join? My credentials, should you need them, are an honours BA in English Lit - and an all-around love of language. I am a modern chic but I appreciate - and could make good fun of - the classics.

katilady
06-27-2008, 09:39 PM
Have you guys read The Rug Merchant by Meg Mullins? Incredible book and I'd love to do a chunky page on it!

thistleandstone
06-27-2008, 09:55 PM
Oh please sign me up. I'm a fan of classic dead authors and like only a handful of the ones still alive.

oh, what an awesome swap this is gonna be . . . :spinny:

I know! I am going to have a hard time focusing on just 9 books or characters or authors! Definitely gonna do The Rug Merchant, also thinking about Bastard Out of Carolina, then there is Broken Verses...and the list goes on!

amyfaerie
07-01-2008, 11:21 AM
oooh, bastard out of carolina is good--i've not read the other two! i am thinking about going with contemporary poets, but i'm not sure if that's what i'll do for all nine of the pages. woot!

miss
07-19-2008, 04:13 PM
Oh man, I am sooooooooo tempted... I've never done chunky pages, though....

BTW-- you say participants don't get one of their own in return, but wouldn't you need 10 participants in order to do that?

katilady
07-19-2008, 04:30 PM
Come join us Miss, I have only done a few chunkies, so I am a newbie too....and ya gotta start somewhere!

jonquil
07-19-2008, 04:36 PM

WOOT!! More converts!

amyfaerie
07-20-2008, 07:30 AM
yay, miss! i'm so glad you've decided to give it a try! i'll tell you, the first chunkies i did, i felt like "this is SO much space--how do it fill it?" Now, mine are often a hot mess 'cause i try to fit way too much stuff on them!

what i'm trying to say, is it's REALLY fun, and somehow, different than atcs. :D welcome!

Mysia
07-20-2008, 07:34 AM
Chunkies really are so different from ATC's. So much space and you have to add and add things to make it chunkier.

katilady
07-20-2008, 03:08 PM
Hey Jonquil! I gots a question for ya! Should our pages include name of author and title of the book/poem/play we are using for inspiration? Should this be on the front or back?

jonquil
07-21-2008, 05:43 AM
Hey Kati, it's entirely up to you - am planning to put the title on the front for a couple of mine as it works - otherwise you could give us a little bit of info on the back. Feel free to go with the flow!!!!

Mysia
07-21-2008, 06:00 AM
I'm having hard time to decide from what books I make these. there are so many great books.

katilady
07-21-2008, 10:03 AM
Thanks Jonquil!

Me to Mysia! I have one I know for sure, but the rest I am still pondering!

jonquil
07-21-2008, 04:39 PM
manycolours welcome aboard - you will have lots of fun - any questions just ask

Mysia
07-21-2008, 04:49 PM
I have decided to do a pirate-themed Treasure Island-page and somewhat cute and innocent Little Women-page but what could I use in a page for Iggulden's Emperor-series...

katilady
07-26-2008, 06:35 PM
Here's my 1st page, based on the book The Rug Merchant by Meg Mullins. It's a love story between an Iranian rug merchant and a white southern college girl set in NYC. This is my interpretation of the characters Ushman and Stella. The background is a pic of a rug from an advertisement, over it is a pic of a man (Ushman). Layered on top is a transparency colored with alcohol inks and a pic of a woman (Stella). I added some vintage lace to the bottom, representing the fringe of a rug and to the side I added a charm from Tibet. I liked the middle eastern feel of it. For me the transparency represents how they will always be separated by their unique cultures and backgrounds, while it still allows them to see and experience one another. Anyway, just my take on things. What's everyone else up to????

Wanted to add I have started page 2 based on The Painted Kiss. It's the story of Gustav Klimt and Emilie Floge. It was never confirmed if they were lovers or not, but they were life long companions. This book is shown through Emilie's eyes, and she is very much in love with Gustav. She was a famous fashion designer in her time, so you know the sewing patterns are coming out for this one! No worries, it's not a biography, it is def fiction!

rockstarsgirl
07-26-2008, 09:00 PM
So wonderful work, Kati. I love how you've used all the layers both metaphorically and realistically.

thistleandstone
07-26-2008, 11:22 PM
Ok worry starts to set in. I'm not getting as deep as that. Is that still okay?

PS. Kailady, your page is beautiful.

katilady
07-27-2008, 02:20 AM
I am not gonna get deep for all of my pages! This one was just easy to do it that way, so don't worry! And thanks Shotgun and TAS!

Mysia
07-27-2008, 08:59 AM
Katilady, I like your ideas. :) And that page looks gorgeous.

Rachel
07-27-2008, 12:49 PM
Okay, I'm not even in this swap :sad but I'm living vicariously through all of your posts! What a fantastic idea for a swap. Katilady, your page is lovely!

katilady

OK, I have finished 2 more, with a 3rd almost done. I am getting nervous about the deadline on this one! I am really having to think for each one and they are coming out slowly *biting fingers* that I will get them mailed in time!

Anyway, here are my next 2:

Middlesex is a story about a person raised as a girl only to find out that she is a hermaphrodite. Her ancestry is Greek and turns out there was a bit of inbreeding going on!

She's Come Undone is a tale most of us are familiar with; one of absolute transformation--hence the caterpillar and butterfly theme!

jonquil
08-04-2008, 03:46 AM
What fab work Kati - I have to admit that I need to get to work myself - the ideas are there are some of them are sketched out just have to actually put paint to mat board so to speak

katilady
08-10-2008, 01:44 AM
I have a question. I will need to mail these out in a week and a half or so to ensure they arrive on time. Are we still waiting for a 10th player? Do I still need to make 9? I have 2 that have to have their backs done and 2 complete ones still left to finish, so I am trying to manage my time on this. Thanks! BTW, I will post 2 more that have been completed tomorrow when I can take a pic!

katilady
08-10-2008, 03:52 PM
It's me again! 2 more pages.

The 1st is the book Bitterroot Landing by Sheri Reynolds (she wrote Rapture of Canaan, which Oprah was all about for awhile--this book is 10x better!).

The 2nd book is The Color Purple by Alice Walker. As I am a pretty hardcore feminist I couldn't pass this book up!

Kati, you have been busy!

rockstarsgirl
08-11-2008, 12:53 AM
Hey, Kati, I know Jonquil has been pretty sick lately, so she might not be able to answer your question for a little while still. I just didn't want you to think she was ignoring you lol.

katilady
08-11-2008, 10:17 AM
Thanks Shotgun! I hope she's feeling better soon!

jonquil
08-13-2008, 11:08 PM
hey Kati , sorry I didn't get back to to you sooner - finally feeling a tad better - in terms of numbers we have actually lost a couple of players - need to update the first post. So you can still make 9 but perhaps we could make it 7 instead. What do others think??

katilady
08-13-2008, 11:36 PM
Ha! 7 is what I have, so that would be perfect for me!

And, Lisa, I do hope you are feeling better! Nothing horrible, I hope?

katilady
08-13-2008, 11:37 PM
Can I be nosy and ask who else we lost?

thistleandstone
08-15-2008, 09:04 PM
Seven would be great for me. Then I will have one more to stress over and get across the ocean before the due date!

katilady
08-15-2008, 09:47 PM
Oh! Let's see yours!

Mysia
08-15-2008, 10:36 PM

Rachel
08-15-2008, 10:59 PM
Please, please, please . . . . somebody post some pictures of what you're doing. :cute: I didn't have enough itrader points at the time to get into this swap so I'm "participating" in this swap vicariously.

katilady
08-15-2008, 11:29 PM
What's the final word on the amount of pages to send? Would like to get mine out by Mon if possible. Thanks!

amyfaerie
08-17-2008, 09:55 PM

amyfaerie
08-18-2008, 04:43 PM
thank you! it is . . . they're photos printed on transparency, over top of acrylic paint and scrapbook paper + collaged papers.

oooh! and mine DID go in the mail today, lisa . . . so hopefully there's plenty of time for them to find their way to australia before the deadline. i hate playing it this close; so no hard feelings if they don't make it in time.

cross your fingers, though!

katilady
08-19-2008, 05:06 PM

Okay peeps - this is where we are at. Was waiting on two packages - one arrived safe and sound yesterday, but poor Nicole's was returned to her in a rather mangled state. So I will be swapping out the pages I have and she will send you each a page rather than trying to send them to me again and you all having to wait for yonks to get your gorgeous returns. Will get them in the post by the end of the week - they are all fabulous.

katilady
09-16-2008, 10:24 AM
Genius solution Jonquil and Nic! Jonquil, thanks for all your work on this!

amyfaerie
09-17-2008, 11:52 AM
