View Full Version : Chunkies: Lost/Recovered/Revived: Found Poetry Chunky Pages -- Due Nov.5

08-31-2008, 04:24 PM
Due date: November 5, 2008
Signup by: October 5 (On Oct 6th I will email all players my address)
Number of players: 20 inside USA/5 International
Number of pages: 2- 4 pages (what you send, you get in return)
Size of Pages: Approximately 4x4"

This swap is a spin-off of the Lost/Recovered/Revived ATC swap.

In the spirit of recycling, I've shamelessly copy-pasted the set up for this swap from Adriayna (she said I could!)

This is my first time to host (or even actually create) a chunky page swap, so be gentle with me!!

Lost/Recovered/Revived: Found Poetry Chunky Pages

Swap Guidelines:

Player should use non-organic (i.e. no food stuffs) paper scraps that might otherwise be discarded. Setting a paper bag next to your work area and dropping scraps into it works best for me.
Want to Kick:jiggy:Up the Challenge???
If you'd like to boost your experience, send a SASE to me and I will return it to you filled with random scraps and at least one page of vintage text. (Outside U.S. Please PM me about this opportunity)

Player should assemble chunky pages from collected scraps and selections of text to create 4x4 pages demonstrating the principals of Found Poetry (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Found_poetry).

Player should select a single page of text (vintage or not is player's choice) for this swap. Selected words and phrases should then be arranged to create a poem, sentence, or express a concept.

Player can embellish the page using any media as long as embellishments do not counter act the effect of Found Poetry.

Pages for this swap should be 4"x4" (what is that in Metric? I have no idea...)

Each player may send between 2-4 pages approximately 4x4" in size. Please make sure your pages are sturdy - mat board works well, but so does chipboard (which is heavier, BTW).

Because the pages may/may not be punched by the receiving player, please allow a 1/2" gutter (or margin) on all four sides of the page. This should leave room for punching holes, etc.

Page backs should be decorated nicely, maybe some interesting scraps or a stamp, with your artist info.
Don't spend too much time worrying over where you get your scraps. You are in charge of challenging yourself and you know what will work for you.
HOWEVER, do not use ORGANIC waste. That means NO FOOD or PLANT WASTE. There are a million reasons not to include organic waste -- most of them are microscopic and crawling around. *shudder*

:dull:Details, details...:dull:

Inside USA, players must include at least $2 in loose stamps. I'm not that keen on cash via mail.

International players, you know I can't say no to you, but I'm not nearly wealthy enough to cover postage for an unlimited number of international players so I'm limiting the number of International players to 5, sorry!

Please send a bubble mailer to mail your returns. I will reuse bubble mailers that you send if you send an address label. The bubble mailer should have your complete return address and on the back, your user name and number of pages you mailed in.

All pages should be IN MY HANDS by November 5, 2008.
If you are running late or something has happened, PM me! Please don't leave me hanging in the dark.

Questions? Answers? :cute:PM me!

If anyone is interested in doing a 1:1 for this theme and swap after October ends, I'd love to get something going.

I'll be watching this group because it's a fabulous, fun theme!

09-05-2008, 11:54 PM
Geez, I'm such a push over! I've extended the deadlines. All pages should be in my grubby little paws by November 5 -- just in time for the elections!

09-06-2008, 12:45 AM
Thank you! That is so helpful!

09-06-2008, 06:56 AM
awwww....but we love you (and all of our chunky page goodies) anyways!

09-06-2008, 08:16 AM

HHC just sent me a note with her beautiful Asian chunky she just made me so I'm going to challenge myself to make found poetry with that.

An envelope will be coming though, Miss Cat, for the extra challenge you offered.

I'm so excited you entered the world of chunkies!

Cats rule, dogs drool

Ha... too bad you're allergic to cats, Rachel! *L*

It's the thought that counts. Fat Cat doesn't make me sneeze!

I need a volunteer to come over to my house and slap my hands and make me turn loose of these pages!!!!!!!!!!! I am going having a hard time parting with them and they are no where near finished.

09-12-2008, 06:42 PM

:daydreaming:Can I slap you other places too??:daydreaming:

Bad Idea! I bite and I'm behind on my shots!

09-14-2008, 12:26 AM
oh my! bad behavior in here! :)

i worked on my pages today . . . i had already put together my blanks out of scraps of paper & rubberstamp images i was gonna throw out for being blurry or faded . . . i like how it all came out, and it makes me realize i throw out WAY too much useable paper.

09-14-2008, 12:40 AM
OH, that's lovely!!

09-14-2008, 12:45 AM
Amy the words on the are INCREDIBLE! I ADORE it!

09-14-2008, 12:46 AM
Are people putting fibers and what not on theirs?

09-14-2008, 12:50 AM
i think i am still gonna fiber mine up a bit, but maybe not as much. probably mismatched fibers or mismatched beads to kinda match their current random-ness.

thank you, katie and kati! i like that one's words a lot . . . it's from a page of camus' the stranger. i'm anxious to see what everyone else comes up with--i love the idea of creating a huge, fat book of these found poetry pages! :)

09-14-2008, 01:03 AM
Yea, I want a big fat book too!

09-14-2008, 01:46 AM
and it makes me realize i throw out WAY too much useable paper.

When I taught classes at a scrapbook store, I was always amazed at the stuff people would throw away. I'd see someone buy a sheet of 12 x 12 double-sided paper that cost $2 and cut a little square out of it and throw the rest away.

Are people putting fibers and what not on theirs?

I'm going to try to work in some extra texture on the pages, but so far all I've got is a wad of tissue paper you use to wrap gifts in...

09-14-2008, 12:45 PM
it makes me realize i throw out WAY too much useable paper.

I've realized the same thing. I've been making up backgrounds out of paper that I would normally throw away, here's an example:
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3226/2853959036_f874eff88b_m.jpg (http://flickr.com/photos/mixing-katie/2853959036/)

09-14-2008, 12:52 PM
Those are great Katie!

09-14-2008, 01:21 PM
those are amazing, katie! i do think i might have to start keeping a scrap bag at my desk, and making a lot of my backgrounds for atcs and chunkies out of the scraps. i really love the effect!

also, i often throw out the little scraps that people send to me with ephemera--the tiny ones--because i always thought they were too small to incorporate into my work. however, now i can use them! :)

09-14-2008, 03:01 PM
Amy, great page. I, too, love the words on it.

KatieV, wonderful idea for using scrap paper.

CrazyCat, I saw that too happen at the scrapbook store I worked at. Since I always worked on "crop night", after everyone had gone, I would sift through the discarded papers and keep some for other projects.

09-15-2008, 01:14 PM
I have been saving things like the plastic caps from water bottles and hang tags from clothing to try to chunky up my book. I want to use stuff that would normally be thrown away, but would be good additions to my pages. I have a box I am collecting paper scraps, and a much smaller box for 'chunky-ish' items and fibers. I have not started my pages yet, but will be all ready when I get a chance. I love what everyone else has been doing.

09-15-2008, 01:54 PM
I got my backgrounds cut up and glued on to the pages last night. Now to find the words I want -- I can't decide which font I want for this one.

09-15-2008, 10:04 PM
Wow, did I find a good text page! I had a page from a book of fairy tales, an introduction in verse. I got six chunky pages out of it and still had enough words left over to do two ATCs!

09-16-2008, 04:20 AM
hey, great pages everyone!!

I haven't started mine yet......

09-16-2008, 08:02 AM
Bright-Spark - I haven't started either, but am loving what's been posted so far.

As far as paper scraps, I'm a total hoarder and will sometimes save little snippets because I like the colors. This is a really fun way to use them, and maybe when things slow down a bit for me I will try to host a swap where we trade an envelope of leftovers just to get something new! What do you all think?

09-16-2008, 10:22 AM
Great idea Cindy! Here is my 1st one! Still need to do the back and add the 'chunky'. Avidstampcarver had some porcelain skull beads in her gallery that she RAK'd me with, I think I will use one for this page!

09-16-2008, 05:09 PM
You won't believe this! I have a rotating calendar I use to keep track of swap due dates and it does a 4 week, 3 week, 2 week etc notification. I got a notice today and thought "OMG! That swap is due soon and I haven't done ANYTHING....oh wait, that's MY swap..." How embarrassing!

09-16-2008, 05:14 PM
Hahhahaa, that happened to me before too!!

09-16-2008, 06:03 PM
Wonderful pages so far. I'm planning to start mine tonight.

09-16-2008, 07:49 PM
Love your page, Katilady!

09-16-2008, 11:19 PM
Thanks Rachel!

09-17-2008, 09:57 AM
Katilady - You have such a great way of layering!

Crazycat - I've at least cut the paper for these pages. I want to start SOOOO bad but have to finish my other projects first. Itchy fingers...

Numbers 2 & 3:

09-17-2008, 11:25 AM
You know, I'm really impressed with everything I'm seeing. All of these pages are packed with vivid images and imagery. I can't believe you've only been doing this a few month.

09-19-2008, 12:05 PM
I got lots of inspiration last night to complete my pages. I'm really happy with the results. I still need to add the chunky part and to finish the backs but that won't be complicated.

09-19-2008, 12:07 PM
Apparently, I don't use a lot of images except when I do the collage-a-thon... hmmm... interesting.

09-19-2008, 03:47 PM
I SOOOOOOOOOOO love your pages Sophie! Yummy!

09-19-2008, 07:38 PM
MissKoolAid I love "the accusation of conspiracy" :notworthy:

09-23-2008, 12:46 PM
I can't believe more people haven't signed up for this fab swap! Mine are all done and i will try to post pics if I can find my camera. I would like to make more if anyone wants to do 1:1 trades!

09-23-2008, 08:19 PM
Go here (http://www.atcsforall.com/forum/gallery/index.php?n=37177) to see my pages all prettied up!

09-24-2008, 10:43 AM
I can't believe more people haven't signed up for this fab swap! !

We're the best kept secret on ATCSforALL!;)

Here's something that may be of interest: Found Poetry Zine (comprised of paper entirely dumpstered and pilfered and acquired via freecycle)

There's a poetry zine, Zero Ducats, being put together "comprised of paper entirely dumpstered and pilfered and acquired via freecycle" I sent an email to one of the editors and included some scans of work I did for the last FP swap and he said he liked them and they might be interested in including them in the zine.

IMHO, several of you have really excelled at FP and should consider submitting your work to the Zero Ducats. Yeah, I know the names a bit weird and their website is more arty than informative, but it's just a thought.

09-29-2008, 10:59 PM
How's everyone doing on this swap? My pages are all done. Pictures to be uploaded tomorrow. I did a 5th one so our delightful hostess can keep one as a gift but I plan to do more to trade 1/1 afterwords.

09-30-2008, 09:25 AM
I am taking my supplies with me while I'm out of town this week. I may have time/energy to work on them in the evenings. I've gathered a LOT of stuff to put together and I think they will be done well before the deadline...a miracle?

If I'm scarce over the next week, it's because I'm travelling. Back on the 7th.

09-30-2008, 10:01 AM
I am done and they are packaged up. I have a bunch of things to mail this week and they are in the pile--just waiting till everything is ready so I only have to do one trip to the PO.

09-30-2008, 11:16 AM
I have one of my pages done, but got more to do!!!

09-30-2008, 07:29 PM
I have two done but without the chunky. Still thinking on the third one.

09-30-2008, 07:31 PM
I did 4 BTW. Will make more for 1:1 trades if people want.

09-30-2008, 10:02 PM
My pages went in the mail tonight. Here's the 5th one I made. Hostess gets to decide which page she wants to keep!

10-02-2008, 01:31 PM
I LOVE that page Miss Sophie! I have sent my 4 pages + gift off to our lovely host!

10-02-2008, 02:16 PM
I think I've got the concept down, but just a couple of questions? We have to select all of the words to our "poetry" from the same single piece of text? And the poem is whatever we make, not an actual poem done by someone, right? If you could just clarify these two things for me, I think I'll join the swap. Thanks

10-02-2008, 02:20 PM
I re-read your swap guidelines (again) and believe I have answered my questions so can I join the swap?

10-02-2008, 02:42 PM
You got it right Maggie!

10-03-2008, 09:26 PM
I re-read your swap guidelines (again) and believe I have answered my questions so can I join the swap?

Welcome to the madhouse...:err:

10-05-2008, 04:32 PM
Pages are done. One page is a hostess gift.

10-05-2008, 04:37 PM
They are all wonderful Corrie, but the middle one rocks my world!

10-05-2008, 05:27 PM
Very cool Corrie! I like the vibrant colours in the first, the "short and to the point" words in the middle and the textures in the last. They all rock!

10-08-2008, 01:15 PM
Thank you!

10-13-2008, 01:31 AM
I sent mine 10 days ago, have they not arrived? I'd really like to know.

10-13-2008, 01:44 PM

Sorry I forgot to get on last night and update. I'll do it right now. Really!

10-13-2008, 03:01 PM
Yay! Thanks!

10-13-2008, 03:59 PM
Here are the first 2 of 4 pages I'll be submitting for the swap:

10-13-2008, 04:02 PM
Last two pages I'll be submitting. BTW this turned out to be a lot more difficult than I had planned because the only non-dictionary pages I had were from a 1930's manual on raising children!

10-13-2008, 04:59 PM
Those are awesome! Now who do I need to bribe?

10-13-2008, 05:14 PM
Have my pages arrived yet?

10-13-2008, 09:28 PM
Corrie, I didn't find an envelope from you, but I may have over looked it. I've asked hubby if he brings in the mail to leave it on the table, but some of it has been carried downstairs. Tomorrow I will scout around his desk to be sure I didn't miss it.

Rachel, I accept chocolate in small bars and coinage. ;)

10-14-2008, 08:25 AM
Those are awesome! Now who do I need to bribe?

Thanks Rachel, I kinda worried about them at first because I wasn't able to actually create "poetry" with the words I had; more like positive statements. So thanks for your kind comment.

10-14-2008, 08:26 AM
Pages are done. One page is a hostess gift.

Wow, great pages!

10-14-2008, 07:30 PM
Corrie, I didn't find an envelope from you, but I may have over looked it. I've asked hubby if he brings in the mail to leave it on the table, but some of it has been carried downstairs. Tomorrow I will scout around his desk to be sure I didn't miss it.m

Well, yesterday was a holiday, so hopefully my pages will arrive in the next day or so.

10-15-2008, 11:10 AM
Don't worry about it. I'm actually just now doing my pages so you've got plenty of time for them to arrive. Plus, it will give me a chance to investigate the kitties litter boxes. Could they have eaten your chunky pages? :biglaugh: Just Kidding!

Let me tell you, swapping these pages out will be hard because I'm having trouble deciding which ones I want to keep. To cover all my bases, I've decided to make a page for each participant in this swap so I have have one page from each of you. Oh, my achy fingers!

10-17-2008, 08:30 AM
Ugh... this is so frustrating. It shouldn't take over 2 weeks to mail from Ohio to Indiana.:arghh:

If for some reason, my pages haven't arrived by November 4, please withdraw me from the swap.

10-17-2008, 01:50 PM
No news of my pages either? They were mailed on the 30th...

10-17-2008, 06:55 PM
Ugh... this is so frustrating. It shouldn't take over 2 weeks to mail from Ohio to Indiana.:arghh: Stranger things have happened. Perhaps they were abducted by aliens?

No news of my pages either? They were mailed on the 30th...Yes, I have them now

10-17-2008, 07:11 PM
Oh great!

10-18-2008, 11:53 PM
Good news, Corrie04....yep, I got your pages!

10-19-2008, 10:08 PM
WHEW!!!! I was definitely getting worried.

10-20-2008, 10:47 AM
I've got all my pieces together, and will start pasting this week! Very happy to finally be back on track. This swap has had my heart, if my hands haven't always had the time to be working on it!

If my name is in red on the starter thread, does that mean you finally have mine (after they've taken the scenic route to you)? I'm sending you additional postage too, separately, straight to you, no left or right turns (lol).

10-23-2008, 10:56 AM

Yep, I have yours Joni.
I also have a package from Alexandria, VA with no user name....

10-28-2008, 03:01 AM
crazycat and all players, I am really, really sorry I am going to have to withdraw from this swap.

10-28-2008, 07:03 PM
My pages are in the mail! :D

10-28-2008, 07:14 PM
aww... sorry to see you go Bright-Spark...

10-28-2008, 07:57 PM
Mine went postal today!

10-31-2008, 10:36 AM
Two more have joined the ranks.

11-12-2008, 10:52 PM
Have these been sent?

11-13-2008, 12:33 AM
I'm ashamed to admit it:embarrassed:, but no. I have them ready to go and I just need to take them to the post office. I was without a car from Sunday until today and today I just ran out of time. I will get them there no later than Friday.

11-13-2008, 12:50 AM
No worries! I was just curious!

11-13-2008, 12:55 AM
Glad to know they are not stuck in postal Limbo!

11-13-2008, 12:47 PM
No, they are stuck in my subaru which is having belts and gaskets replaced. I should have gotten it back yesterday.

11-19-2008, 05:47 AM
Okay, all returns posted and iTrader ratings entered. I started running out of words worthy of the fantasterifficawesomost pages sent to me, so I started making words up.:cute:

Everyone did a greaterifficastic job on the chunkys and I'm very happy I let myself me talked into doing this.:v_spin:

11-19-2008, 09:16 PM
I did post pictures in my gallery, in case anyone is interested in seeing what I sent in...

Thanks again for hosting, CrazyCat! It's a lot of work, I know!

11-22-2008, 06:25 PM
I received four wonderful pages in the mail today! Creative thanks to amyfaerie (The Fair God exerpt page), MissKoolAid ("These French), crazycat (Design is timeless) and "Rachel" ("Hope"). Everyone did a great job - many thanks:)

12-01-2008, 12:41 PM
Sorry for posting this kind of late...a close friend's mom passed away a few days before Thanksgiving, and we've been helping with that memorial as well as having our own family holiday.

I received great pages from Crazy Cat, KatieV & Smokeysmom.

12-05-2008, 07:16 PM
My pages arrived today. Thanks to Joni Owens, CrazyCat, KatieV and Amyfaerie for delightful artwork.
