We altered the guidelines from the moleskine exchange groups on Flickr a bit.
The idea:
1. Every artist starts with a Japanese folded moleskine (name, address, username, as well as travel-plan written in book). The owner of the moleskine decides whether the contributions of the other artists to her moleskine should follow a certain theme or not.
2. Each artist will draw, make a collage, paint, or use whatever media on four pages per moleskine. After finishing an entry the moleskine will be send to the next person. Each artist gets one month to make an entry. The first entry will be made by the owner of the moleskine. Artists are encouraged to interact with the other images in the book. Please be respectful.
3. When the book is full, i.e. when one side of the unfolded book is filled, the book will be sent back to its original owner.
4. Please communicate regularly via email, PM or in this thread. Let know that you received or sent a book. The goal is to create together something beautiful and to have a dialogue.
5. Most important: let’s enjoy this adventure and have fun!

The sequence of artists is different for each moleskine, which will hopefully result in seven totally different moleskines in the end.

To move the journals along, we have to send by the 15th of each month. So the first mail out date is Feb 15th.
We've got a month to work in the moleskines and then have to send it to the following artist. When the moleskine arrives at your home, your month to work in the moleskine starts. You work on 4 pages. If you finished within a month feel free to send it to the next person.

In this thread we can give each other updates of the well-being of the visiting moleskine, if there is a delay, etc., etc.. We do have to post when we mail a moleskine and when we receive one.

A couple of us already decided on a theme for their moleskine, some others are thinking about a theme and of course, picking a theme is not necessary. Please post in this thread as soon as you decided on a theme or decided not to have one … I'll add it on the list.

Thanks goes to wendy for these guidelines!

I would like to play!:) My theme is "Things that make your heart soar."

curbsidetreasure
01-08-2009, 09:30 PM
ok, thanks for letting me know your themes :D i am so excited!!

i believe this month of January we should be decorating our moleskine with our chosen theme.
write your name, address, username, as well as travel-plan written in book - this should be done in a way that incorporates your theme and this is done in the first 2 pages of the moleskine.

see example here done by arteeztmom (http://www.atcsforall.com/forum/gallery/index.php?u=728)
http://www.atcsforall.com/forum/gallery/index.php?n=51844

then create in the next 4 pages!

What size moleskin book would everyone be using? is it the large sketchbook one? just considering cost of postage.

purplecat

the japanese accordion book is harder to find locally then the other types. i have found them at art stores like dick blick and pearl paint but not so much at bookstores. i bought mine online during the holidays along with another book and with the discount i got the moleskine for free.

Curbside, do you happen to know an average shipping cost?

curbsidetreasure
01-09-2009, 10:08 PM
sorry, corrie i dont. i havent mailed these out before . one suggestion is to keep the packaging not too big - like dont get a too big bubble envelope for it, i know for a fact it really reduces costs especially for mailing internationally.

and 3.5 x 5.5 is not that big so hopefully shipping costs will not be that much.

corrie04
01-09-2009, 11:24 PM
No problem. I just was going to write down the estimated shipping costs on my swap records.

katilady
01-09-2009, 11:41 PM
Yay! I found one here locally--it took some hunting but I did it. This makes me super happy cause i prefer to buy local then at the online mega stores. Anyway, my theme: art as a spiritual journey. I would like it to be mixed media as much as possible, but use your discretion. Woot!

curbsidetreasure
01-10-2009, 12:23 AM

and that's a great theme!
i have edited the swap page to include your theme and preference.

Lily Lemon

I was in another moleskine exchange which encouraged a combination of art and writing. I'm assuming this emphasizes art more than writing, right?

I'm also hoping you all can give me some theme feedback, as I'm not sure I got the right one, especially if the moleskines focus mainly on the art. Does anyone have a gut reaction to my theme? Did you see it and think, "Oh, I can do that" or was it more "What am I going to do with that? Are the things that make your heart soar things you can draw or are they so abstract that you'd need a lot of explaining to do?

Other ideas I have are All Creatures Great and Small (not in a religious way but encompassing enough for other artists to include their favorite creatures, birds, etc.), Castles, Quotes, Wisdom, or Horse Spirit.

Any gut reactions to any of those? I'm seriously stuck and would feel better about going forward if I knew I wasn't picking a theme that might be unappealing to the rest of you.

Seriously, I'll take votes!:)

katilady
01-10-2009, 03:32 PM
Hilary, I really like your original theme. I like that it's open enough for me to do my own thing, but does give me a direction to go in. What I have been thinking about for yours is doing a combo of collage with some text of the things i have in my life that make me really happy. I may include some hints at my spiritual life in that, but nothing too overt.

katilady
01-10-2009, 03:41 PM
Annie! OMG! I just got Somerset Studio's new Art Journaling mag (which is WONDERFUL) and saw your work in there! CONGRATULATIONS! It looks fabulous!!!! You have been so quiet about it!

Also, a question for you. Anne Sexton did some poetry on fairy tales for her daughter, would it be OK to use some of that imagery in your book?

Lily Lemon

Ok! Sounds perfect. I like the idea of including some word and/or quotes, too. The broader theme should make it pretty easy for all players to do their thing. Also, if cute 'lil critters make your heart sing, you can include those, as opposed to be obligated to do them.

lily (and everyone) i think doing a combination of art +writing is absolutely fine! i like your original theme too lily, it's nice and open.

kati - i would love it if you included anne sexton's images :) i have read the fairy tale ones and they are amazing.

l i'm glad you got the art journaling magazine! i really like that mag and it's so cool to be included in it!

Terrific - I just ordered 2 more books and hope they arrive quickly. Over on Flickr later this week I should be posting some drawings I'm doing for another moleskine exchange I'm in. I hope this one works out better -- we had one person hoard three books between August and last week. It feels great that they are back in circulation again...and I can not tell you how beautiful those pages already done are to see up close!

I'm excited by this group, some of my favorite folks are here! I love the circulation schedule, and think we'll be a dynamic combination of great minds!

curbsidetreasure
01-11-2009, 03:34 PM
i would love to see those drawings :) i'll definitely check your flickr
this is a great group to be working with!

i am a little wary of joining a moleskine exchange on flickr only because i dont know too many people in that flickr group. i am glad the person hoarding the books put them back into circulation, many times that never happens.

katilady
01-11-2009, 03:35 PM
I agree Cindy, this is a great group of artists each with their unique style!

OK, I have a question. In counting out the pages it looks like there are 2 leftover at the end. So do we do 6 pages in our own book in addition to the travel plan pages etc? Or is my count off?

corrie04
01-11-2009, 03:41 PM
I can't wait to hear what coffeelatte's theme is!!

curbsidetreasure
01-11-2009, 04:01 PM
kati - i think i counted the pages a couple times and it looks like we have 3 pages left over? its really up to you.

katilady
01-11-2009, 04:44 PM
OK, I think I will do just 4 initially (less pressure!) and then do the last pages when it returns to me. I am getting so excited about this!

katilady
01-11-2009, 04:51 PM
I wanted to add some clarification about my theme. I know that all of us are on different spiritual paths and I open to whatever that is for you and how art has influenced your path. All I ask is that your pages are about YOU, and not an attempt to preach to others in the group. So if you are Buddhist, Christian, Muslim, whatever feel free to include that in your pages, but just in reference to you and art. Does that make sense? Feel free to PM me if you want more clarification. If you are atheist, maybe you can do your pages on how art has influenced your emotional well being. OK, I am rambling, but I just wanted to be clear.

corrie04
01-11-2009, 05:11 PM
Thanks for the clarification Kati.

Ok I think I am going to choose the theme; "home is where the heart is", this can be your home,or where you live, houses, bird houses, hearts, or the place where your heart is! I hope that is open enough, I love houses and hearts.

I am hoping I get my book in the next few days I can't wait to get my hands on it!

awesome theme purplecat!!

isn't it agonizing to choose a theme? i think thats why corrie was smart and let us choose from 3 themes. lol. i was torn between fairy tales and monochromatic as the theme.

oh and lets just stick with making the 2 pages (travel plan & theme announcement page) and 4 page spread which is where you explore your chosen theme. when the book comes back you can fill up the remaining pages. that way it is less pressure to fill up pages.

corrie04
01-11-2009, 10:06 PM

that's what I was thinking too. See how creative we are?

Lily Lemon
01-11-2009, 11:01 PM
I haven't seen these books yet and haven't counted the pages. Are you saying we do the travel plan (1 page), the theme announcement (2nd page) plus four pages of our own (3rd-6th pages) before sending to the first recipient? Is that right? When is the first send date? I know many of us are waiting for our books to arrive from Amazon.com or other sellers, so I hope they arrive soon!

coffeelatte
01-11-2009, 11:20 PM
I'm just so happy purplecat clued me in to this one! Thanks for letting me play with the group. I've got to put my thinking cap on for a theme...it may take me a few days to formulate.

Curbsidetreasure - I went WAY to the edge of my comfort zone with the Flickr moleskine exchange. I had traded art with two of the people in our group, but I basically just asked the rest if they'd join a swap based on what I saw posted in their photostreams. I knew they were good traders, and liked their style. Then one of the people I'd swapped with before had multiple personal emergencies (a hurricane hit her house in Florida, her in-law had a stroke and required care, her neice had a premature baby, she was bitten by a wild raccoon...) I was starting to think she'd totally lost it, but the books ended up in my hands finally and I'm excited to get them back out to their owners. We are moly_x_36 in the exchange.

curbsidetreasure
01-12-2009, 12:06 AM
yes that's exactly it lily

do you guys want the first send out date to be the first week of each month? so that would mean we'd send out the journals the first week of feb. i want everyone to have enough time to work on your pages and the cover is optional.

wow, thats intense, coffeelatte. i hope she is doing better now! i'm so glad she sent back the journals, because really a lot of people would just forget about it

corrie04

I had to order mine from Amazon, too, and am waiting for it to arrive.

coffeelatte
01-12-2009, 10:18 AM
I'd like to suggest that we send on the 15th of each month. That those who will get their books in the next week (which, hopefully, will be me...) will have several weeks to do six pages.

katilady
01-12-2009, 10:22 AM
I like that idea Cindy.

curbsidetreasure

yes, the travel plans are written on the first page of the thread. everyone please read that!! a lot of the stuff there will hopefully clarify what you need to do.

Happy about the 15th, too!

Yep, got mine yesterday! Hooray!

coffeelatte

Thanks for going to the 15th -- my books are estimated for arrival Thursday. It's looking like I'll be working Saturday (and maybe Sunday) so I am glad to have some breathing room.

I'm contemplating a couple themes. One would be "mermaids" and the other would be to ask that you incorporate a favorite recipe into some kitchen or cooking themed art. Any preference from the group?

purplecat
01-13-2009, 10:40 AM
Ooh mermaids!! I nearly went with that theme!

katilady
01-13-2009, 10:42 AM

Lily Lemon
01-13-2009, 12:09 PM

Lily Lemon - Happy Birthday. You definitely are a gorgeous 40 year old...I think that 40 is like the new 20 anyway...right?

Karen - Love the heart house travel page! Thanks for posting. I hope we'll post lots of pics in this thread!

MY THEME IS: Mermaids. I don't care if you collage or draw, but I would especially love drawings on the theme. I also like lobsters, so extra points if they are incorporated...

katilady
01-15-2009, 11:28 AM
I have started my pages! I am going about it backwards and doing my 4 pages 1st and then I will do my travel and theme pages.

I am trying a technique i learned from 'Collage Journey's' by Jane Davies. You cover your substrate with found text and then apply several layers of glaze, wiping off and adding more till you get a look you like. Then you add imagery. Once that has dried you coat a nice layer of gel medium over the whole thing and write into it. Let that dry then add contrasting glaze so that the writing pops. The sample in the book looks fantastic so I am giving it a go! If it turns out well i may try it on other books! So far have the found text glued on.

corrie04
01-15-2009, 09:50 PM
Ohhhh... I can't wait to see how that turns out, Kati. ... Wait... I have that book. What page is that???

Update on my journal: I started my travel log last night... and of course, I totally screwed up! UGH and double UGH!!! Had to gesso over it.

Cindy, thanks! Your'e so sweet!

katilady
01-16-2009, 12:01 AM
I am gessoing the pages I am working on, but I am leaving the others blank so people can choose what to do. I use a lot of wet mediums and gesso helps the pages stand up better.

curbsidetreasure

rachel theres no need to gesso. i dont have any gesso...however if any of you want to gesso the pages, i dont see why not. it's your journal!

we plan on doing the travel and intro pages, that's required. however you are free to do your own 4 pages at the end. i just think it would be fun to have the journal filled a little so the first person to receive your journal could have some eye candy to check out. lol.

Do the pages fold up still, Katie?

Corrie - Every time I see your new icon girl I smile -- I love that color combination, and everything about her!

katilady
01-17-2009, 12:32 PM
Cindy, that little girl is me, lol! The pages do fold but I had to force them a little. The book is much thicker now!

Hilary I bet your pages are great!

katilady
01-17-2009, 02:20 PM
OK, here are my travel plan and theme intro pages. They look much better in person--I used Byzantia by Stewart Gill so they are super shimmery and on the blue page there is also violet interference embossing. As you can see I am asking ya'll to each sign next to your name. I hope that is OK. Question time: now that I am done with all my pages can I send the book off to corrie early or should I wait to the due date? My thinking is it might be nice to giver her extra time, but I also don't want to overwhelm her. I am OK to whatever the answer is!

Hello artists! My book should be going out to Corrie today providing I get time to sneak over to the PO from work. Sadly, some of the pics I used have been damaged from either the heavy use of gel medium or not letting it dry properly. I tell you this so you don't think it's something you did when you open the book and see it. I will think of some solution to fix it when it returns to me, and if you have any ideas after seeing it feel free to tell me!

Also, I am including a small token of appreciation for each of you. Please do NOT feel obligated to do the same. Your art is enough!

I can't wait to get going on this!

purplecat
01-22-2009, 01:05 PM
Katilady I am sorry to hear you have had problems with the pages you have done, hope you can fix it!
I need to get to work on my pages, maybe this weekend.

I too was thinking of putting something in for each person if I have time.

corrie04

Lily Lemon

curbsidetreasure
01-22-2009, 03:20 PM
sometimes i have that trouble too kati about images getting damaged because of sticking.
how damaged are the images? perhaps a light glaze of paint could work? or gesso over lightly? again i dont know the extent of the damage but i always have to remind myself not to lay on the gel medium too thick or else it takes forever to dry. also maybe next time using a hair dryer to quicken the drying process?

oh and kati - i have done my into+ travel pages and the 4 page spread! i did that last night too bad i can't scan it up :( :( as my computer isnt working.

01-22-2009, 03:32 PM

If any of you have Karen's address handy could you message me and I can mail out this afternoon?

Karen - Just sent you a personal message. I am sorry to have given bad information when I posted last.

I just got in to work and my office assistant said she hadn't mailed my package out on Friday because she thought it needed a customs form. When she just gave me my envelope back I have addressed it to the wrong person (Purple Realm instead of Purplecat!) Horribly embarrassed -- what IS WRONG WITH ME -- but feeling lucky it didn't go out that way!

Lily Lemon
02-23-2009, 12:58 PM
Oh, Cindy! I'm kinda laughing at that cute story(in a good way) !:) Sometimes things work out better than we plan!

coffeelatte
02-24-2009, 03:11 PM
I am very, very thankful for that strange little glitch...I would probably have been even more embarrassed if Purple Realm had sent me a message saying "what the heck is this you've sent me!"

Yesterday was just very weird, all the way around. I NEVER sleep in -- and then, on a Monday, I wake up at just about 7am. Which is 2 hours later than I usually sleep. I get to work and our admin is sick -- she basically handled the mail and left the office for the rest of the day. So it was crazy, busy...and my boss was crabby.

But today is quieter, and I'm sort of screwing around instead of working. It's Mardi Gras and our headquarters is in Louisiana so they all take the day off. My boss is out, everybody is back at work...and I'm taking this moment to down another cup of coffee and check what's up.

I wish I was retired...

02-24-2009, 09:15 PM

I have Annie's page done! It is based on Anne Sexton's poem 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs'. It says:

Beauty is a simple passion,
bit, oh my friends, in the end
you will dance the fire dance in iron shoes.

It is filled with texture--different papers, and paint, and I also used some ultra thick embossing powder--so touch it!

Purplecat - I hope you get it soon! The other cards and things that went out that day have all arrived at the other end, but only one of those was outside the US.

Kati - That's a passage on one of my Sexton pages!

My pages in Kati's moley are in progress and I'll hopefully have them finished this weekend. If not, then they'll definitely be done by next weekend and then mailed out to the next person.

Now, when I made this, I totally forgot that the elastic band goes around the top and bottom of the book. So, I'm going to use a rubber band (around the sides) to keep it closed for mailing. Sorry about that.

Katilady, if you want me to cut the extra part off, so that the elastic band can be used correctly, please let me know.

Great pages, Corrie! I don't have any ideas yet for Kati's book so it's good to get some inspiration!

Okay, I won't cut it off! BTW, the last doll ("ART") is dimensional and sticks out from the page.
