01-12-2009, 11:23 AM
I am very excited about this and am in for sure! I will also work to recruit other friends as well. I think I may have to kick my DH out so we can have a chunky book sleepover party!

01-12-2009, 02:49 PM
I loved the last one, hope I can get a couple done as that's my craft group weekend!

01-12-2009, 02:50 PM
I will try and play too!!

01-12-2009, 11:42 PM
Oh goodie, I do so want to participate as I see great chunkie 4x4 in the gallery.....somebody please fill me in on what constitutes/requirements for a chunkie 4x4?????? Why are they called chunkie? are they made from thick paper pages, or because of the square size?????

01-12-2009, 11:55 PM
Yay! I was so disappointed to find out I missed the last one of these. Hopefully I'll be able to get some time free.

01-13-2009, 01:10 AM
Oh goodie! I should be able to play for part of the weekend. :)

01-13-2009, 12:18 PM
I became so excited I sent the below out to my fellow art friends. It also included an itinerary, what to bring, etc... Should be a fun weekend!

" On the ATCSforall site there is a chunky book-a-thon Jan. 29 – Feb. 1. There will be a drawing by the hostess for 2 chunky book pages, and a forum where you will be able to post your wants and organize trades with people during the event (if you are trying to add pages to a previous book or start a new one) and I will be giving out goody bags containing pre-cut chunky book backs, ‘chunkies’ and other goodies! What could be better *grin*. "

01-13-2009, 12:19 PM
By the way, I made a list of the themes I will be working on over the weekend:

-Vintage Barbie
-Mixed Media Girls
-Page about me (for my all about Kate book, how narcissistic is that?)
-1800-1920 female authors and characters
-Paper Dolls (with removable clothes!)
-Clean it out

01-13-2009, 12:20 PM
wish I could play but my daughters wedding on the Texas coast is that weekend - will be watching for the next time :)

01-14-2009, 05:46 PM
marking this down so i am ready

01-14-2009, 06:03 PM
I think I will have to play - am going to cut a stack of 4x4's in readiness

01-14-2009, 06:06 PM
I have never done one of these before. How do they work?

01-14-2009, 10:22 PM
I will gladly play!

01-15-2009, 11:24 AM
How the "a-thons" work: block out some time to work on your art. Made as many pages as you want. Post pages that you finish to the thread if you want to trade. Post to the gallery if you just want to show what you've done. Have fun.

Before the weekend it helps to look through this thread or others on the site for themes that people are interested in trading, or you can just work on designs that make you happy.

If you see a page that someone else has posted and you want to try and get in a swap, send them a personal message asking to set up a trade.

Things move pretty fast during the "a-thons", so it pays to check the threads often and ask immediately if you see something you like!

I'm going to try to play, but may end up just making pages for other swaps I am in.

KatieK - great idea for a fun girls get-together!

01-15-2009, 11:26 AM
I forgot to mention that sometimes people will trade with you even if you don't have a page already done that day. You can ask to have a particular page and, if they agree, they will let you create a page to return to them (rather than sending one you already have completed.)

If you haven't swapped at one of these before, just know that trades get going really fast!

01-15-2009, 01:55 PM
So basically we all should post what themes we are interested in getting, so we know what to make for each other?? what do you think?

01-15-2009, 02:31 PM
Thanks for the explanation. I think I will join in. :D

01-28-2009, 12:35 AM
So it's getting closer to the chunky-a-thon... closer... closer... :D

01-28-2009, 04:15 AM
Hi All,
Themes I like:
-handmade and mixed-media backgrounds-show a technique and let me know on the back how you did it:) OR Collage (at least 3-4 layers please)

-cupcakes, cute, and or themed for holidays in 4x4 inch size or 6x6 inch-as done for Monarch's recent cupcake chunky swap- Note: It has a specific pattern.

-CD-sized* and "ROUND" purple or blue monochromic (1 color in various shades) I'm willing to make square ones in return:)

NOTES: Do make it mixed-media, sturdy, chunky with lots of texture, fibers,& danglies. Willing to reciprocate for similar themes.

Thanks much, Christina

01-29-2009, 01:54 PM
It's today, it's today! I work until 7:30 tonight but I'll be back. :)

01-29-2009, 03:09 PM
I'm looking forward to this.

01-29-2009, 03:43 PM
Today is the day....I hope everyone has alot of fun!!!!!!

01-29-2009, 03:57 PM
Oh goodie, I do so want to participate as I see great chunkie 4x4 in the gallery.....somebody please fill me in on what constitutes/requirements for a chunkie 4x4?????? Why are they called chunkie? are they made from thick paper pages, or because of the square size?????

Sort of all of the above . Chunky pages usually have heavier embelishements and stuff hanging from them too. I usually use fabric and make a "batting sandwich" or a heavy "pellon sandwich" for sturdiness! Anything goes really, if you go through the chunky gallery you will find all sorts of yummy chunkies to drool over. You can punch holes in them too and make a chunky book.

01-29-2009, 04:24 PM
pippin - Thanks for answering her question...I guess I didn't see that post.......

01-29-2009, 04:30 PM
I'm styill fighting a cold/flu virus...but if I feel better by Saturday I'm going to make some of these...is anyone picky about what the page base is? I have anything from heavy cardstock to something like chipboard...

01-29-2009, 04:44 PM
I usually use cereal boxes as my base. They are sturdier than cardstock, but not as thick as some that I've received where you can hardly punch a hole through them. :(

I hope you feel better, Cairnlae!

01-29-2009, 08:14 PM
Well, let's see if I resized these right.....

01-29-2009, 10:49 PM
Work getting in the way of my having fun time, by Sat hope to join you all. Thanks for the answers...and I found the tutorials in the forums that have great photos/ideas/eye candy to drool over! as well as instructions to aspire toward....

01-30-2009, 03:33 AM
Horray, its here, I hope to get started either by tonight or if not it will be tomorrow (sat) afternoon by the latest! I tend to use a thick board, Hopefully it won't be too thick for the swap..

Themes I collect are:

and Naughty/Nasty Nursery Rhymes!

I love all kinds of mediums and danglys too! lol

01-30-2009, 12:41 PM

01-30-2009, 01:19 PM
Hi You guys - I feel bad that I started this thread but have not particapated in it yet...... I have had some unexpected issues arise with an after school program that I work at..............The issues needed to be dealt with and have taken up alot of my free time.................Maybe tonight I will have the time to make a couple of pages.........Have fun!!!!

01-30-2009, 01:22 PM
don't worry carol - we'll hold down the fort :) good luck with the after school program, hope we'll see you later :)

01-30-2009, 03:29 PM
I am relatively new to the site and have not tried making chunky book pages before so I may give this a shot. If one or more looks okay, I will try to post a thumnail. If not, I will just watch and learn this time around lol. Thanks to everyone for the info. The idea about using cereal boxes as a base is a great recycling idea.

Also, I saw something about decorating the backs on one web article I read so there are no blank pages if someone puts them together in a book. What do you all do on the backs besides sign them? Thanks!

01-30-2009, 03:38 PM
I usually just put some patterned paper on the back, maybe a sticker or something that coordinates with the front of it and then put my info on it.

I hope you join! I don't think I'm going to have anyone to trade with and this is my first time, too!

01-30-2009, 05:19 PM
I'm sure you will find people to trade with you!! - especially if you make special themed ones for eachother :)

I have only done one chunky page before, so I'd like to get some more in...

01-30-2009, 06:09 PM
I did some..here they are...are they TOO chunky?!(i.e. too much stuff tied onto the edge...)..I had some feathers I'd been wanting to use up for something so this seemed like the perfect way!!

edit: ohh..the scans came out small...sorry about that! I'll try to enlarge and upload to chunky gallery...

01-30-2009, 06:51 PM
Darn didn't even know we were having a chunk a thon. I'd love to do some trading but last time I made a bunch to trade and got stuck with them, only one is one of my themes, the others were themes people in the chunk a thon were collecting.

01-30-2009, 06:56 PM
Well I did one earlier, and I have about 5 backgrounds done...
The one I did earlier is a Japanese Geisha Chunky and I did another one just before the marathon started which is a Vintage parisian theme. I haven't added the danglies yet, because they scan better without them, also they look better in reality than on the scan! ... More chunkies available later so watch this space!

Here they are if anyone is interested in trading! :))

And finally a chunky page I did a while ago, still available if anyone wants it?

01-30-2009, 07:02 PM
I'm not playing this weekend. Too many swaps to get done. But I just wanted to say that I like the pages posted so far! Cairnlae, there's no such thing as too chunky in my book! ;-) Love those caged birds!

01-30-2009, 07:18 PM
OOOHH, Turquoise! those are gorgeous!

Yours, too, Cairnlae!

01-30-2009, 07:18 PM
Wow Cairnlae, I love your bird chunky pages!
nothing is ever too chunky...if you are interested in trading a page, have a look at the pages I made or else let me know your themes and I will make one asap for you!

01-30-2009, 07:18 PM
Aaaw thank you Kasaij, looking forward to seeing yours!

01-30-2009, 07:22 PM
By the way other themes I collect besides what I posted above are Gnomes, Historical kings/queens, Nature, Vintage...anything that catches my eye really!

01-30-2009, 07:47 PM
I guess I should throw a few out just in case..I'm actually interested in gnomes as well!!!Also- mermaids,Nick Bantock style collage, recycled trash, circus sideshow,Frida Kahlo...

01-30-2009, 07:59 PM
I've already got a few up, but I'm going to make a couple more, at least. I collect anything.

01-30-2009, 08:46 PM
Enjoyed seeing all the pages that have gone up so far. I'll have to get busy. I may have to take Saturday morning off though to have my tires looked at  Thanks for the tips about what to put on the back.

01-30-2009, 09:23 PM
I usually just put some patterned paper on the back, maybe a sticker or something that coordinates with the front of it and then put my info on it.

I hope you join! I don't think I'm going to have anyone to trade with and this is my first time, too!

Thanks for the info. I really like the pink "Dwell in Possibility" one! I have actually cut some 4x4 pages so maybe it will be available when I get one done.

01-30-2009, 09:30 PM
Here's another one I finished a little bit ago. I went ahead decorated the back as well(with the bird cages I just made sure the backs were nice and had all the information on them.)

01-30-2009, 09:41 PM
Those are SO COOL!!!

01-30-2009, 09:44 PM
Wow, Cairnlae, the back is really great too! Thanks for scanning in both sides.

01-30-2009, 10:17 PM
Two more.....

01-30-2009, 10:57 PM
Another dumb question-do you PM someone about a trade or ask directly on the thread?

01-30-2009, 11:01 PM
I have never done this before, but I would imagine you pm them. :D

01-30-2009, 11:10 PM
yes, pm'ing is the preferred method for any one on one trades!!

01-30-2009, 11:31 PM
Went out to eat tonight with a bunch of friends and got home late, so I only got one done tonight........

01-30-2009, 11:49 PM
oh you are baaaaaaddddd.....:P

01-30-2009, 11:49 PM
I love the circus theme and the colors.

01-31-2009, 12:50 AM
Awesome page Monarch...

I did two more..they aren't totally finished yet since I have to add some embellishments and danglies to them, I thought they might scan better without them...but I think they still look better in reality..

I would be up for making Gnome pages, however I only have Leprechaun type Gnome images, would any of you be interested in this or you prefer the traditional Gnome :P lol

01-31-2009, 12:46 PM
One more.......

I'll get my dangles on later.......

01-31-2009, 01:10 PM

Great pages everyone!

I'm getting a chest cold and don't feel well so have not gotten much done. (whine, whine) I do have some in process will post them in a bit. :)

Turquoise, I don't know what a leprechaun type gnome is, but it sounds interesting. We're getting to leprechaun season soon, aren't we?

01-31-2009, 01:33 PM

01-31-2009, 01:40 PM
sorry! I hadn't really done these before, so I thought I should practice first before making them for other people...maybe tomorrow though? :)

these turned out better than I had hoped, but I still want to zettify them a bit more - ideas anyone?
I'm waiting to get a dymo embosser, as that is really the kind of lettering I want to add...

01-31-2009, 01:53 PM

Hey, how does everyone feel about digital chunky pages? I've seen swaps where you create one original then print off a bunch and then add embellsishments afterwards...I've been really playing around with digital lately and like this idea..

01-31-2009, 06:02 PM
One more.....

01-31-2009, 06:20 PM
cute monarch!!

Well, noone answered about digital chunky's...I'm going to go ahead and post what I've been working on...I think they'll look pretty cool printed out and embellished!!

painted rose
01-31-2009, 07:03 PM
LOVE those two digital pages - how did you get the sparkles effect on the teacher's pet page?

I think its a really nice idea!
especially as you add embellishments and fibres, which makes them more special and individual...

even a quick play around with coloured pens and glitter adds a bit of fun to digital collage - I often do that to collage elements to spruce them up :)

01-31-2009, 07:17 PM
lots of wonderful things I see......(wish, wish,.....

01-31-2009, 07:26 PM
Well, I will definitely print them up and embellish them if anyone wanted to trade...I have these two and the Under the Sea theme still available...

oh...and the sparkle effect was already on the wing graphic...I cannot for the life of me find a photoshop brush that adds glittery specks or sparkles!!

01-31-2009, 07:36 PM
Oh Man! I just saw this thread! I may be able to make a couple tonight (I have to work Sun.). You guys are putt'n out some fantastic pages!
I'd love to add to my Dark Art Chunky Book and my Coffee Chunky Book. *Hint Hint*
I do have two available in my gallery. A garden theme (crooked bird house) and a Vintage Woman (Act ll).

01-31-2009, 08:41 PM
Hey, how does everyone feel about digital chunky pages? I've seen swaps where you create one original then print off a bunch and then add embellsishments afterwards...I've been really playing around with digital lately and like this idea..

I really like the texture of original collage layers... although depending on the embellishments added, a digital page would be cool. It's kinda the same with ATC's... I prefer original layers but also like digital...

I think being clear that what you're offering is digital with embellishments is key.
Well, and it's me getting used to digital art. lol

So... that's my opinion for the moment. :D

01-31-2009, 08:49 PM
Well perhaps if i dazzle you enough with my digital magic you'll begin to sway..hehehehe...

01-31-2009, 08:51 PM
BTW... cairnlae, your digital pages are way cool. :)

Monarch, I like your blue fairy!

01-31-2009, 08:54 PM
I reworked my "Under the Sea" page...I just didn't think it had enough "oomph"...the scan isn't as clear now (of course) w/ the additional embellishment...

Lily Lemon
01-31-2009, 09:08 PM
That's fabulous!

01-31-2009, 09:28 PM
I made some more chunkies if anyone wants them...I haven't embellished them or added danglies yet, but just pm me if you are interested...

http://www.atcsforall.com/forum/gallery/images/2834/1_Asian_Chunky_2.jpg (Traded)

I also made a Gnome chunky page which is available!!!
The background looks black but its actually an image of a valley with a stream..danglies will be added later..

01-31-2009, 09:47 PM
Hello HHC,

I didn't see your post until now...
Yes we are certainly nearing to leprechaun season! lol
A leprechaun is sort of like a gnome only he is dressed in green and wears a top hat...I am going to make the chunky with it tomorrow and put it up in my gallery and you can all see what its like...and hopefully give him a good home if interested ! :D

01-31-2009, 10:18 PM

02-01-2009, 02:01 AM
Ok I couldn't sleep tonight, and rather than tossing and turning...I made more chunky pages!!!

Some of them won't scan properly because of the embelishments, so I had to take pics of them and they are still not very clear...hmm...anyway...They are still WIP and danglies have yet to be added as well as embellishments...

For those of you who like the dark side! (Traded)

I finally made the Irish Leprechaun chunky...so here he available to a good home :)

I am sorry the post is image heavy guys, but I don't really know how to make thumbnails...Anyway if you are interested, in any of my pages... get in touch :)

I hope to have a couple done this afternoon and posted. Things got out of hand yesterday and I never had the time or energy to work on my pages.

Love what you've all been posting - some really fun things, and beautifully combined images!

02-01-2009, 12:11 PM
wowzie, painted rose! great pages!

cairnlae, regarding packing. I usually wrap my pages lightly in tissue, enclose in plastic (a sandwich sized baggie), and use a regular 6 x 9 manila envelope. I don't usually have heavy embellishments, but if I'm worried about things getting broken, I'll either wrap in a lightweight bubble wrap or use the bubble envelope.

painted rose
02-01-2009, 12:52 PM
how do you guys bind your chunky books? I don't want to sew the pages together, as that will be too limiting to movement, but I don't have a bind-it-all...

any ideas?

02-01-2009, 01:15 PM
I use the metal rings and fill the rings up with misc. tied ribbons...................

02-01-2009, 01:21 PM

where can I get that sort of thing?

painted rose........I can't remember off hand what they are called them but here is what they look like...........They are hinged and open up....They come if different sizes 3/4 inch, 1 inch etc....................Go to a craft store or business supply store and they should have them...If you can't find any, I'll will mail you some.....

I used the 3/4 inch on my 5 page cupcake book and they worked just perfect.....

painted rose...are you putting your chunky ages up for trade or just showing us your work? I think I was confused by the earlier post when you showed them as WIP...

Here are a couple of pages, minus the danglies, that I managed to accomplish this weekend. I have some other chunky pages in my gallery that have been sitting there since the last CPAT and if anyone is interested in any of them, please shoot me off a PM. I won't be around this coming week but I'll get back to you as soon as I return home. My oldest son will be in the hospital for back surgery for at least four days. I won't be anywhere near a computer till I get back home.
Painted Rose, you can buy those rings at Walmart for 88cents. They come 8 to a package, different colors. You can find them in the section where they sell envelopes and things of that nature. The ones they sell are 1 1/4 inches. I used some on Chunky Books that have 10 pages and they worked fine.

Here's a wonky one I did, minus fibers. :) I have a few more in the works, but need to leave for a bit. I'll be back later...

thanks for the info Donna and Carol, walmart is unfortunately not an option as I live in the UK, but I've done some searching and I think my local DIY shop will have them :)

lovely pages being posted :)

Sorry to turn up so late in the game but here are two for trade if anyone is interested!! Weekend turned out to be busier than expected!!

02-01-2009, 10:08 PM
I know this is late, but this is my first chunky ever. I only have a flatbed scanner so I have not yet put on the fibers and the hand charm because I was afraid it wouldn't scan at all. The colors are nicer in real life. This is also my first attempt at uploading a photo here so please be kind! Thanks for looking.

Goldenwolf, very nicely done!

I wish I had made more so I could ask you all to trade!:)

02-02-2009, 12:40 AM
Pippin, those fabric pages are fantastic....do you have a Bernina sewing machine, or a newer type machine (the computer program ones)???

02-02-2009, 12:48 AM
The fabric ones Pippin did are beautiful. Makes me wish I could sew.

02-02-2009, 01:26 AM
Absolutely gorgous Chunkies Pippin!
I love your chunky too Goldenwolf!

Unfortunately, I have never been able to find any metal rings over here in Ireland, still searching though...however I think they would probably cost an arm and a leg if I found a packet since this is a rip-off country anyways lol!

Thanks grammy!! I have to confess I am the proud owner of a Husqvarna Designer SE and a Husqvarna Embellisher (machine needle felting). The designer is both a "normal" sewing machine and an embroidery machine. I can transfer designs from the computer to the machine too and am taking Digitising classes! I used to have a Janome 10001 but upgraded last year. Most of the work on these two was done on the Embelisher and then finished on the sewing machine.

( I have a serger, and five other machines too varying from >100 years old to 12!!! Not that I am obsessed at all certainly not!).

Oooh! I just noticed I won! I won! I won! Thank you so much, Monarch!:)

02-02-2009, 04:47 PM

Let's see..I have monarch and HHC's chunkies packaged and ready to go...I put them into these stiff cardboard envelopes that I had from the post office..did not seem like i would need bubblewrap for them, so I hope they do alright.I think they will...:jiggy: They wil mail out tomorrow(mailman came early today...jerk never comes when I want him...LOL).

The rest, I only have soft envelops so I need to go to the store and pick up some bubblewrap(I am clean out..could have sworn I had a roll..I'm gonna take another look into the closet)...so the rest will go out tomorrow or Wednesday....

02-04-2009, 02:09 AM
Congratulations HHC and Lilylemon!!!!

The Chunkies I owe everyone will be going out towards the end of the week, we are snowed in at the moment (and quite frankly I am lovin' it! lol) been making and snowman, playing snowballs etc...I am such a kid!! lol

2-3 would be great Cairnlae! I dunno I think I might use the one ring since it would be easier for me lol I am not so great at the binding part to be honest! Thanks again!
