View Full Version : SWAP: Watercolour Sampler Paper - due March 25

Jean
02-04-2009, 05:09 PM
CLOSED TO NEW SIGNUPS, SORRY!

Swap Due Date - March 25
Signup/withdraw date - March 5 (to allow time for a waitlist participant)
Number of Cards - 12 for 12
Number of participants - 2 groups of 13 each.

Wish you could get a watercolour paper sampler? This swap is for you! The aim of this swap is to enable participants to try out different types of Watercolour Paper.

How it works:
Each participant will send in 12 ATC sized pieces of their paper and get back 12 DIFFERENT kinds of watercolour paper, each labeled so that you will be able to choose your favourite. When you sign up, indicate the kind of paper you will trade. If no one is offering that kind of paper, you're in!

What you must do:
On the back of each blank, write with pencil, your name and the type of paper. Put each blank in a sleeve - OR, even better, put slips of paper with the paper details and brand and into each sleeve; that way both sides are available for painting!
On the envelope, put your username and group number.

Open to all, but each group is to have different kinds of paper.
EX: Arches 140 lb cold pressed, Arches 140 lb hot pressed, and Arches 140 lb rough are three different kinds of paper b/c of finish. Other differences are weight and manufacturer.

Postage guidelines (for each group; if you are in two groups, double it as I'll mail each group separately)
Ok, I have the rates for 30 grams/1 ounce; This is for each group.
Canadian participants please send an addressed label and 54-cents in postage stamps.
Americans, please tuck a $1 bill in there and an address label - not the tiny return labels but an mailing label. Postage is 98 cents; including paypal charges for those of you using it, it's $1.41 CAD per group; I will supply the envelope.
Other internationals, please include a mailing label and pm me for my Paypal. Postage is $1.65 CAD + .39 for Paypal: total is $2.04 CAD per group. I supply envelopes.
Extra blanks are appreciated but not required.
I weighed 15 pieces of light watercolour and they were right at 25 g, so should go for 1 stamp canadian, 1 dollar US (postage is 98c), or $1.68CD foreign.
Remember: Do NOT send an envelope, just the address label (the larger, domino sized ones).

Could we print the info and slip it into the penny sleeve with the blank instead of writing the info on the back?

Thats what I've done because my handwriting is terrible - starts off neat then just goes haywire- plus there is to much info to write on the back - hope that's ok Jean?

Oh and please could you pm your addy?

I am a big-time procrastinator when it comes to cutting blanks in advance of wanting to use them. So THANK YOU for the purpose! Mine are ready to go out on Monday. :wubclub:

And the 12 returns will help me coast right back into my laziness later...sweet!

Jean
02-07-2009, 07:29 PM
You know, that's a better idea entirely - printing out the paper details and brand and slipping it into the sleeve! I'll edit the first post now!

Jean

The ones I got from the first swap were written on. I used my white eraser and they came up clean as a whistle.

Jean, may I please play?

I can offer you deckle-edged 140 g/mē watercolour paper from Silberburg.

(Yes, it's hand-made, and yes, it's one of my favourites, it also works well with other media, not just watercolour! But two of the deckle edges will have to go when I cut it up into ATCs... what do you think, should I rather cut it so that none of the edges is deckled? The pieces I have are 10.5 x 7.5cm, or 4.1 x 3 inches, that's the smallest size this paper comes in.)

What a neat idea! I love paper packs with assorted stuff in them. Haven't really been to our "Art Supply and Misc trades section" much, maybe I should look more often.

avidstampcarver, you are in! Welcome! Re: deckle edges...you can trim the deckle edges evenly and use them in other projects, or you can leave the two deckles and cut the card a teeny bit larger on the cut sides so everyone can decide to leave them or not and trim the cards accordingly when they receive them. Either way is good!

I'm with you, ANg! I've been known to trim the deckle edges off envelopes I've received and used them in other ways.

I heart deckle edge so much in fact that I'll just leave the pieces as they are--they're just light enough, just slightly oversize (remember, approximately 3x4 inches)--then everyone can decide which edges to 'keep' for other projects ;) and which to leave on the ATC, or to simply cut them all off.

Would that be OK, Jean? :wubclub:

Jean
02-08-2009, 08:47 PM
What is that noise?? Oh, it's everybody cheering, avidcardstamper! I think everyone was drooling over thoe edges, lolol. Thank you for your generosity! Those won't fit in an atc sleeve, so don't bother about that, ok?

Jean - cards are in the mail. Post office was very tricky asking me all kinds of questions about contents. they ended up writing photographs and cards. Anyway, they went out yesterday. Pat

Jean
02-10-2009, 06:23 PM
I put 'Pictures - Please do not bend' on my atcs when I send 'em out. That seems to get by with least interest from PO officials.

Dadreemer
02-10-2009, 06:40 PM
Think I'll use that too Jean. Anything other than letter size that goes outside the US requires a Customs form at my post office. I write artwork on the form and always put a DO NOT BEND sticker on all outgoing mail envelopes. Gonna try gettin' the blanks in a regular envelope and put the extra postage on for stiffness an extra weight.

Jean
02-10-2009, 06:48 PM
I use a legal envelope, which can fit three atcs side by side. I'm hoping we can get them through for a single letter rate.

Christina
02-10-2009, 08:06 PM
Hi All, I can supply the Strathmore watercolor COLD press 140 lb (300 g/m2). Not sure which group has places left so either group is fine with me. Thanks, Christina

Yup, that's the size that I use and usually pay the extra 20 'cuz it wont go through the machine. I prefer to pay the extra coins to have my artwork stay away from those machines anyway, they get reallllllly hungry sometimes. Just weighed the envelope and it's 1.5oz, 'bout 80 cents to mail. To be on the safe side, I have them weigh it at the Post Office. Will mail it off tomorrow.

Jean
02-10-2009, 09:23 PM

I am hoping to send 12 pieces of w/c paper for a single stamp, about 1 ounce. I know my paper will go for one stamp; if yours won't, please let me know.

Jean--you left the question mark in my paper description when copy+pasting! LOL.
Makes it look like I haven't decided which paper to send in.

But I'm sure I'll send this kind. I just saw a sticker on the cover sheet saying this paper has won an award for innovative product design, and due to the fact that it's mainly bamboo, it saves a lot of resources (bamboo grows much faster than trees).

Go nature! ;)

Edited: LOL, you also mixed up some things when spelling my user name! It's avidstampcarver, NOT avidcardstamper!:laugh::laugh:

Debra1217
02-21-2009, 11:01 PM
If I can join, please pm me your address. Also, is it alright if I print out an adress label?

You would just have to tape it onto the envelope. I don't have any of the sticky domino sized address labels in my possession.

Jean
02-22-2009, 01:21 PM
Welcome to AFA, Debra! I'll sign you up now!

The address label is fine. If you join lots of swaps, you'll find it helpful to print up a page of the labels on your computer. I generally print up a page or so and then cut them up and keep 'em in an atc sleeve with my envelopes and stamps. Makes things much easier to have it ll together!

Debra1217, your papers came in! Whoohoo!

There are two places left in the second group....today is the last sign-up day, so if it works out that you've sent 12 papers and there are only 10 others to swap with, I'll be sure you get your two extra papers back.

Hopefully, though, we'll see two new signups and you'll get a better variety.

Jean
03-06-2009, 11:45 AM
Oh, well, no more signups so Group 2 is holding at 11 participants/ten samples returned to you.

Group 2 members who have sent in 12 blanks already, it's not a problem. I'll just return your extras to you.

I think we're going to have a ball trying them all out! And I get to try 'em FIRST! Are y'all jealous? LOLOL I haven't tried any yet, I'm being good, but BOY is it hard! lol

Yeah, I keep mine in a glass on my night stand while I sleep. http://s237.photobucket.com/albums/ff133/onionethan/onion_Emoticons/th_001_-v2.gif

LOL I was thinking more like that scene in Young Frankenstein where the Marty Feldman character is looking at all the brains in jars, lolol. I dunno, but that scene just looks like an episode of the Kati and Nanner show. ;)

My cards are on their way, Jean, so at least you can swap out on time if not early.

Jean
03-17-2009, 12:38 PM
I know! I don't think they'll take long to get here, the way things have gone so far...*crossing fingers* I'll swap out as soon as I get 'em, GW, and then the playing can begin!!!

Who'd have thought swapping blanks would be so exciting???

AnitaM
03-17-2009, 12:40 PM
I'm gonna have loads to play with cause I've got the last lot from Rkolig's swap which I haven't used yet.

Jean

Attention: Group 2 members!

I was thinking, since the idea was to try other papers, instead of returning your two extra blanks to you, why don't I just continue to swap them out? That would give you two blanks from the same person/same kind of paper, but hey, that's no problem is it?

What say y'all? I'll go with the majority on this...Group 2 members are:

Group 2 - name - type of paper
1. Jean - all mediums canvas - CAN
2. Altermyworld - currys "all purpose" 140lb -CAN - rec'd
3. Crftyscrpper - Grumbacher - medium weight cold pressed-50% rag 125 lbs. - USA - rec'd
4. Bright-Spark - Arches Aquarelle NOT 140lb - UK - rec'd
5. pschafe1 - Arches Cold Pressed Grain fin, 100% Cotton, 140 lb. -USA- rec'd
6. avidstampcarver - Hahnemuehle Bamboo Mixed Media paper Weight: 265g/sq. metre - GR - rec'd
7. Terrorgirl - Daler Rowney 300g/m2:140 lbs cold pressed NOT - UK - rec'd
8. hayward cs - Strathmore 400 series Watercolor cold press 140 lb. (300 g/msquare) - USA - rec'd
9. katilady - Montval Cold Pressed 140# USA - rec'd
10. Debra1217 - Arches Aquarelle 140 lb. Hot Press/Grain Satine Natural White - USA - rec'd
11. GoldenWolf - Winsor & Newton Cotman 140lb - USA

Jean, you do whatever is easiest for you!

I bet you we will all be happy with our returns.

Jean
03-17-2009, 06:34 PM
Well, I was thinking it might be more in keeping with the swap goal - getting samples of other papers - to just keep on trading out. It's no worries for me either way, swapping out.

Jean
03-19-2009, 12:38 PM
You're so welcome, Cheri!

Since there seems to be no chorus of "Nooooo, I want mine back!" I'll just swap out randomly with the two extras for group 2.

I'm keeping an eye on the post....no cards yet but I think this week for sure!

Nuts, I sent them over a week ago. I hope they get there by tomorrow  Sorry for holding everyone else up.

Jean
03-24-2009, 06:13 PM
Oh, pshaw, GoldenWolf. They aren't even DUE till tomorrow and Canada Post seems to stop to smell the flowers when they should be delivering mail, lol. Add the local post office, which sometimes closes and sends the mail truck off to Toronto early as opposed to observing the times on the door (!)...it's ridiculous.

Besides, there's still two weeks to mail out in, so they'll get here and I'll easily get them off within that time frame. Trust me, this is not something worth stress. ;) Have you seen how many calories are in a Cinnabon bun???? Now THAT's worth some grief! LOL

Cinnabon Regular Caramel Pecanbun
1,100 calories 56 g fat (10 g saturated, 5 g trans) 141 g carbs 47 g sugars

GoldenWolf, your cards arrived today! That's awful, considering they went out on the 17th! Canada Post must have been sleeping!

Everyone I'll swap out this weekend and plan to mail out on Monday, all things being equal. I'll keep you posted!

Guess what I'm doing!!! :jiggy:

It occurs to me I'd better not encourage speculation - given the way SOME of your minds work!! ;) I hope to be finished swapping tomorrow and I expect to mail out tomorrow. Will confirm that, though. Just wanted to keep y'all in the loop.

So far, about par for my course for swapping...

- got craftyscrapper's envy mixed up with Terrorgirl's but sorted it out, I think.
- sent crafty's to the PO to be weighed for postage, but it accidentally was *mailed* though I asked for it not to be.
- I have a headache now.

Ok...life has asserted itself: Stepson has broken up with his girlfriend and is moving back home. NOW. I think tonight will be a lot of listening....but I'll try to get them out tomorro. I'll keep y'all informed.

Jean your hints and tips about leaving reps is the BEST.

Jean
04-06-2009, 11:03 AM
Now why on earth would papers get to UK before USA? Makes no sense to me but I'm glad they're finding their way home. Scrummy, aren't they!

I'm glad the rep sticky was helpful for you, Anita! Everyone, to leave rep easily, go to the active swap threads, where there's a sticky note on how to leave it more easily.

I was asked whether if we were in two groups, whether we should get double rep/iTrader. Not sure, going to see, will post back.

I got both of my groups in the mail today. Have already given you an iTrader and was going to give rep points when I saw your post. I'm going to wait until you get an answer so I can do all the rep points at one sitting. Plus give you another iTrader if that's what we should do!

Bright-Spark
04-07-2009, 05:41 AM
My second envie arrived today, yeah!!

many, many thanks to all!

Jean
04-07-2009, 10:24 AM
Ok, I checked with Admin and they said it goes like this:

You give an iTrader for each mailed trade. One envelope, one iTrader. Two envelopes, two iTraders.

So each group is a separate entity. If you are in both groups, then you can give rep for each participant in each group. People in two groups get two reps.

I almost understand that, lol.

GoldenWolf
04-07-2009, 11:34 AM
So those of us who participated in two groups should give you a second iTrader because the groups were mailed separately, one rep point for folks who were in one of our groups plus double rep to people in both groups? Wow, that was so long I nearly forgot to stick a question mark at the end.

Dadreemer
04-07-2009, 01:26 PM
Got my papers today! Wow, this is quite a variety. Thanx to all, and to Jean for making it happen.

Jean
04-07-2009, 01:32 PM
Y'all are welcome!

Yes, GW, each envelope is treated as a second swap or trade, so reps/iTrader for each one.

I thought they would be in the same envie?

Jean
07-12-2009, 08:13 PM
Alarm sounds. Jean picks up megaphone.

Attention everyone! Ok: I just used some of the w/c paper blanks for a swap and it wasn't till I put one into a sleeve that I realized it looked short...and it is. Please check your papers before you use them, as some hosts/traders will return cards that are off-size!
