View Full Version : Charms Open Swap - Due March 20th

02-18-2008, 10:29 PM
Swap Due Date - March 20th
Signup/withdraw date -
Number of Cards - 5/5 to 15/15
Number of participants -30 FULL!

Hello and welcome to the open charm swap. This is for charms of any kind - altered scrabble tiles, altered objects, beaded charms, PMC charms, you name it - anything goes! As always though, please do your best work.

This swap is for a minimum 5 for 5 and up to 15 charms maximum. 8 - 10 would make a nice amount for a chunky charm bracelet; or you can hang them individually. Each charm should have some way to hang it (a drilled hole with a jump ring or similar thing).

Feel free to add additional beads, embellishments, and danglies to your charms. Charms can be done in any media or mix of medias you would like :). Since most of us will probably use them as jewelry, please also make sure they are sealed with a strong glaze and that the art alterations are permanent!

Here are a few photos of scrabble charms I altered a while back:

1) Send in a minimum of five and maximum of 15 charms and get that many in return. Charms as hostess gifts would be appreciated but not required!

2) Please send an appropriate amount of postage for the amount of charms (what it takes you to mail them to me). The last swap cost about $2- $2.50 in postage for 10 charms or so. Please send it as loose stamps or well concealed cash.

3) International participants - All participants are REQUIRED to send postage, including international participants. My post office, in fact, does accept International Reply Coupons. You can send me an IRC if you'd like or else you can send me postage via paypal or US stamps if you have them.

4) Bubble mailers-- PLEASE send me a bubble mailer to mail your charms back in (I will reuse bubble mailers that you send if you send an address label). The bubble mailer should have your complete return address on it. On the back, put your userID and the amount of charms you have sent.

5) Charms should have your name on them somewhere, although not necessarily on the charm itself. If you package the charms, you can include your name and user ID on the label somewhere.

6) All charms should be IN MY HANDS by March 20th, 2008. This gives us over two months to work on our charms! PM me for my address when you are ready to send.

This charm swap is limited to 30 participants. WE ARE FULL!

Erin (Gretchen)

02-22-2008, 09:25 PM
hi! glad to see my charms are with you . . . and so thrilled with all your hard work here, dana!

02-23-2008, 11:15 AM
Sorry it took me a while to update this thread. With me being sick and then the new site opening, I've had my hands full!

But, without further delay, I've gotten some new charms in!

Karenm- wire and bead charms! Very nice color combination. Thank you for the extra charm!

Pamitha - great scrabble charms! I love these. Thank you too for the extra charm!

Bluebelle235 - What awesome beads! Those are beautiful charms. Thank you too for the extra one!

Ginabee, your charms have NOT arrived. Hopefully they will today (mail has not yet gotten here). I will let you know as soon as I get them!

02-23-2008, 02:49 PM
Dana, I forgot to add to my beads, the black/white and gray/white beads are mine that are of Fimo clay. Just FYI

02-23-2008, 07:57 PM
Oh, cool. Looking forward to seeing them :).

02-23-2008, 08:20 PM
Ill go and check the tracking number for mine. They should have arrived by now. :(

02-24-2008, 02:27 PM
Ok, I'm going to double check my envies here too because Ginabee thought hers should have also arrived.

Moonfairy! Yours are here and are WONDERFUL! :)

02-24-2008, 02:39 PM
OK, I got Dana's addy and my charms are ready.. They will go off sometime this week, Dana! I keep getting inspired for new charms though! I already have 10 and an extra for the hostess......
I also finally got my accumulated scrabble charms attached to a silver chain necklace - leaving room to add more charms, I hope! So many compliments! It is really fun to wear! Thanks to everyone who encouraged me to start doing this!

02-24-2008, 02:40 PM
I am here. Thought I had checked in but guess I didn't

02-26-2008, 03:51 PM
Ok, I'm going to double check my envies here too because Ginabee thought hers should have also arrived.

Moonfairy! Yours are here and are WONDERFUL! :)

Oh great, I`m so happy they arrived safely :jiggy:

02-28-2008, 10:54 AM
I hope everyone's charms make it...I always worry when things don't come as quickly as I thought they would! If anybody's end up MIA, Dana, you have my definite permission to give them one of my charms anyway. I got "in the zone" and made so many that I am really not picky about getting back the same number I sent.

02-28-2008, 02:36 PM
OK, my charms are finished ~ five each of three different styles.
Some are big enough for pendants...hope that is OK!
My charms can be seen in my gallery:

Now I have to pack them all so they travel safely!

02-28-2008, 02:38 PM
mrubynean....they are all soo cute...but the zettie cats make me giggle :)

02-28-2008, 03:18 PM
mrubyjean, they're all great! :D

02-28-2008, 08:13 PM
So far the charms are all accounted for :).

Eggstudio, those charms are awesome!!!!

02-29-2008, 01:26 PM
Tracie - your charms are here! They are lovely. I love the red jasper beads! Thank you for the extra charms!

Therosecottage - your charms are here too! What neat little charms. Thank you so much for the extra charm!

02-29-2008, 07:32 PM
Yeah, they made it :jiggy:

03-01-2008, 02:18 AM
mrubyjean, I love your zetti cats and fairies! Great work!

03-04-2008, 11:38 PM
Mailed my charms out on Saturday morning...hope they arrive safely!

03-05-2008, 05:26 PM
I've finished 16 in widely varying styles and materials. I still need to find rings for them and maybe a few embellishments. They'll be on their way early next week.

03-05-2008, 05:58 PM
Thanks for letting me know! I have two packageshere but I haven't had a chance to open them (just getting in the door, hehe)

03-06-2008, 10:14 AM
Duckface - your awesome charms are here! Thank you so much for the extra one and for the great papers :)

Mrubyjean- I love your work! And you sent me a tree charm. How thoughtful!

Thank you both -- great charms!

03-06-2008, 12:33 PM
Oh, I'm so glad my charms arrived safely.
I'm pleased that you like them!

03-08-2008, 08:32 AM
Great ! Thanks Jetleg :)

03-09-2008, 12:25 AM
I AM alive and here....:embarrassed: Sorry I haven't gotten the charms off yet: I have had a busy few weeks with an artist-in-residence in my classroom, a student art show to mount and put up, and some troublesome 7th graders. :arghh: The charms have been sitting on my table ready to finish up and pack, and now they are ready to pack and mail! (Rainy days are good for art work, even if they do turn the snow to slush!) I will try to post some scans and will mail them out Monday, PROMISE!

03-09-2008, 03:47 AM
OK, I will try this again..... Here are some of the charms I am sending... The acorn is a vintage celluloid button, and there are three of those charms. (If this doesn't work, you can see them in my gallery.)

03-09-2008, 10:48 AM
Oh those are so cute!!!!

03-09-2008, 11:13 AM
Kate, those are just "charm"ing ;) ..7th graders...I remember those people LOL. BTW, love your quote from Garrison Keillor!!!! Love his program too.

03-11-2008, 11:44 PM
They are beautiful, jetleg!!

03-12-2008, 09:38 PM
Dana, I mailed mine off on Monday, so you should see them soon! I put $1.58 postage on each envelope and hope that is OK. It is more than the weight indicates. There are extras for you as a thank you.... :)

03-13-2008, 07:38 PM
here are mine. I have one more to make. I went all over the place with these. Too much fun!

03-13-2008, 07:49 PM
sometomato, what a great collection of eclectic, wonderful charms!

03-13-2008, 09:08 PM
Bluellen, what a wonderful set! great work!

03-13-2008, 09:26 PM
Love them Bluellen!!

03-13-2008, 11:29 PM
Nice! Returns from this swap should be lovely!!

03-14-2008, 12:00 AM
Dana, I mailed mine yesterday! Hope you have them by Monday. I can't wait to see all of the exchanges!

03-15-2008, 09:37 AM
:arghh: Oooooh, I hope mine get there in time. I mailed them over a week ago.

03-15-2008, 09:44 AM
Grrdjules and Egod - your charms are here! They arrived yesterday but I was so busy with the server (and the site was down) so I didn't have a chance to post, lol.

They are two beautiful sets of charms! And thank you both for sending me extra charms as a gift!

03-17-2008, 09:30 PM
Mailed mine today priority along with tiny covers! :)

03-17-2008, 10:24 PM
OOO! Can't wait to see! :)

03-18-2008, 02:16 AM
Dana, did my envelope with charms get there yet? (Hoping, hoping....)

03-18-2008, 08:59 AM
I didn't get ANY mail yesterday, and they didn'tarrive on saturday. I'm expecting them today! :)

03-18-2008, 09:51 AM
Hi, I sent out my charms yesterday-hope the March winds speed them your way!

03-18-2008, 12:13 PM
Hehe, me too! :)

03-19-2008, 10:05 PM
I have gotten lots of envies today! I swear, there is some conspiracy going on at my post office.

ANYWAYS...charms are here!!!

J4mi3 - I LOVE that glass. WOWOWO! Awesome work. And I'd love to hear about copper soldering from you if you are willing to share :).
Sometomato - YES!! THEY ARE HERERERE!!! Its about time. No postmark date, so I have no idea how long they were off in postal netherworld. Wonderful work!

Each ofyou have been so generous sending me extra charms and goodies! Thank you!!!!

03-19-2008, 10:06 PM
Ok, I know Sallyann's charms are still on their way. Are we waiting on any other sets? I don't have notes that I'm waiting on anyone else! Please let me know; I would love to get these in the mail to you on Saturday :)

03-19-2008, 11:46 PM
Hi, I was going to overnight my charms today, but couldn't get away from work to get to the post office. :(

If it is okay, I will overnight them tomorrow and they would be there Friday...

Let me know...I apologize for being tardy. :embarrassed:

03-19-2008, 11:52 PM
That is ok, Joyflower! Just don't put a requirement of a signature on it--becuase I won't be home till the afternoon on Friday and then they won't leave it for me :)

03-19-2008, 11:57 PM
Okay - thanks so much! - I would be brokenhearted at missing out - everyone has made such beautiful charms! :)

03-19-2008, 11:58 PM
If I have to hold up the swap a few days, its no big deal! ;)

03-20-2008, 03:28 AM
As far as I know everything here is business as usual on Good Friday. I work for the State, and I am certainly expected to show up at the office.

03-21-2008, 02:35 AM
Ah! I see there has been a mellowing of mood for our dear hostess! :)

I overnighted my charms today - supposed to be left at Dana's by 3:00 tomorrow.

This is my first attempt at charms, so I made little beaded flowers...posted pics on flickr if anyone cares to peek.

03-21-2008, 06:39 AM
JoyFlower, those charms are supercute :)

03-21-2008, 09:12 AM
Ok, so as soon as sallyann's and joyflower's charms get here, we are ready to swap! :)

03-21-2008, 10:23 AM
Very [I]charming[I] Joyflower and appropriate to your name!

03-21-2008, 11:42 AM
Such great charms everyone has done.
Looking forward to seeing returns from this swap. It was great fun :)

03-21-2008, 03:44 PM
guess what! Both sets of charms arrived today!!! I haven't been told by anyone that we are waiting on more charms, so I will swap these tonight and take them to the post office tomorrow barring unforseen circumstances. Will keep you informed!

03-21-2008, 04:41 PM
Hooray!! Thanks for letting us know!

03-22-2008, 02:42 AM
I am so excited about the returns from this swap! What I want to know is what Dana does with all the charms she has accumulated!

03-22-2008, 11:31 AM
So far, not much, hehe. I have a bunch of them--sometimes I wear them and such, but I have so many now I really don't know what to do with them! lolol.

03-22-2008, 11:49 AM
Dana, you could always attach little clasps to each one and then hang them on a bracelet. That way you can change them around all the time!

03-22-2008, 12:14 PM
Everyone! I have returned from the post office and all of your packages -- with two exceptions -- are sent.

Eggstudio--I can't read your address on the original package, so I need you to send me your address again.

Bluellen - your charms will go out with your tiny books! I hope to have the books out by next weekend. I will keep you informed! :)

I am leaving everyone feedback now!

03-22-2008, 12:59 PM
Wow - you are a fast swapper! :)

Purple, that's a great idead about the removable clasps for the charms.

03-22-2008, 01:15 PM
I left feedback for all participants! Please let me know if I missed you :).

03-22-2008, 01:31 PM
excellent! thank you dana!

03-22-2008, 01:56 PM
This swap took a long time yesterday to swap out; I don't know how fast I really am, hehe. It took almost 5 hours plus the time to go to the post office and get each envie checked, lol

03-22-2008, 02:16 PM
Ah, then instead I shall say you are a very devoted hostess! :notworthy: lol

03-22-2008, 04:07 PM
Thanks Dana, I know you have been so busy of late and I appreciate all that you are doing.

03-22-2008, 05:28 PM
Dana, we all think you are MARVELOUS! :notworthy:
How about this idea? I am putting my charms on a long chain necklace, because I don't like to have too many jangly things on my wrists when I work. It occurs to me that they also could be attached onto a thicker chain for a cool belt!

03-22-2008, 07:04 PM
Thanks so much! I am so excited about seeing what I got from everyone!

03-23-2008, 06:58 PM
Thanks Dana for all your hard work. I am excited to see the charms too.

03-23-2008, 07:04 PM
I hope everyone likes their returns! I tried to give everyone a variety :)

03-24-2008, 03:35 PM
I was astonished to find my charms all in my mailbox today. I had no idea they would be here so soon. They are lovely, and you are right, I haven't decided what to do with all of them as I really don't wear a lot of jewelry. I think I'll display them on a mini-bulletin board for a while and then decide. You really are amazing to have accepted fifteen charms and from thirty people. Do you have any idea how many charms you handled to get this done? I'm already worried that I won't get the charms with the right people to thank, and you had them all! There should be a rating above "outstanding" for you!

03-24-2008, 04:56 PM
I have left i-trader for all my charms except for one beautiful altered scrabble charm that appears to have been woodburned with a flat almost seed-like bead at the bottom. The overall effect is rather oriental. It is the letter "I" and says artcards on the back.
Does anybody know whose it is? To the rest of you, I hope I thanked you for the appropriate charm. With fifteen of them, I got a bit confused. If I messed up or left you out, please let me know.
People I received charms from: Bluebelle, PurpleRealm, mrubyjean, eggstudio, moonfairy, Balletbon, Dana, Sallyann, Pamitha, Joy Flower, Amyfaerie, WME133, jetleg, and Duckface and J4mi3. They are all beautiful. Thank you so much.

03-24-2008, 06:28 PM
Wow - I can't believe you already got you package - that was quick!!

Artcards is actually someone's username. Her real name is Jena. :) You should be able to find her in the members list.

03-24-2008, 06:40 PM
Erin, artcards is the person you are looking for, hehe!

Yes...it was a LOT of charms! I spent hours and hours swapping, but it was fun to swap them all out and see them all :)

03-24-2008, 06:44 PM
That's funny. I thought of checking that but decided it just wasn't likely. Thanks! By the way, I sent l6 meaning one for you without a swap, but I got 16 back! Thanks! They're fun to play with. I feel like a crow with a nest full of shiny objects!

03-24-2008, 07:29 PM
Oops....well, enjoy your extra Erin! :P

03-24-2008, 07:31 PM
i rec'd glorious charms today! egod, mrubyjean, eggstudio, duckface and bluebelle! they are ALL gorgeous--and i'm tickled with them all!

03-24-2008, 07:53 PM
I agree with Erin! Wish there was an "outstanding" button to click on for you Dana! lol
I can't wait to get mine...but I will...cause they are coming with my tiny books! YAY!

03-24-2008, 09:08 PM
I "guess" you never got my charms that I mailed in Feb. 11th? I called them, round tuits.

03-24-2008, 09:17 PM
Ginabee, what did they look like? I swapped out all the charms I had here. If yours were lost, I can send you some of my hostess charms to replace them and make a few more for you.

03-24-2008, 09:53 PM
It's me!! I'm Artcards/

Ginabee: I hope your charms made it!!!!

That's funny. I thought of checking that but decided it just wasn't likely. Thanks! By the way, I sent l6 meaning one for you without a swap, but I got 16 back! Thanks! They're fun to play with. I feel like a crow with a nest full of shiny objects!

03-25-2008, 12:40 AM
With help from Dana, I figured that out, and now you too have a new rep point! Lovely
scrabble charm!

03-25-2008, 07:42 PM
Ty hon.. I hope I get mine soon!!!! I can't wait!!!!!

03-25-2008, 07:44 PM
A lovely package of charms showed up at my house today!!!
I'm in the middle of packing for a trip...so will leave MANY rep points as soon as possible!!! Thank you all...and thank you to Dana for a fun swap!

03-25-2008, 08:12 PM
Yay! Glad they made it ok :)

03-26-2008, 01:09 AM
I received some lovely charms today. Thank you all. But I'm a bit disappointed because I received 4 charms out of the fifteen with absolutely no info as to who they were from.

03-26-2008, 08:04 AM
Some people didn't mark them. I had hoped to do so, but it took me over 5 hours just to swap them! If you describe them here though, I can probably help you figure it out :)

03-26-2008, 11:55 AM
This was the first charm swap I had participated in, and I noted that other people did a much better job of identifying their charms than I did. I will do better next time. If you have vellum envies with no charm in them, the charms may be mine.
Dana, I was thinking a wire tree like you can sometimes find readymade for miniature ornaments or earrings. or one of twisted wire you created would be one fun way to display the charms if you were not wearing them. Hey, you could even alter one of those plastic gum drop trees! Always, another project!

03-26-2008, 06:05 PM
Yeah! I purchased this tree looking thing at Ikea and I'm thinking of making it into a charm tree!

03-26-2008, 07:20 PM
I got a lot of no names also..... But beautiful Charms!!!!

03-26-2008, 07:42 PM
I received mine yesterday...lots going on here, hubby was to go in for surgery yesterday and DD came up from NC...they called off the surgery as we were going out the door...rescheduled for April 8...messed up schedule!

DD and I went out and I bought a lovely "tree " in the sale aisle of a local store!!

Thanks Dana for the swap , it was great!
Thanks to : J4mi3, PurpleRealm, Moonfairy, WME133, mrubyjean, LavenderLizard, Bluellen, eggstudio, Deedles, and one without a name!!

Great job and they would look splendid on my new tree :D

03-26-2008, 07:50 PM
Karen, would you take a picture? I'd love to see!

03-26-2008, 08:54 PM
Oh, my GOODNESS! It feels like my birthday came early with all the delightful charms that arrived today. Everything is beautiful!

Thanks to Jetleg, eggstudio, mrubyjean, Moonfairy, PurpleRealm, egod, Balletbon, wme133, Deedles and Pamitha - and Dana of course!

Very inspiring - such variety - makes me want to go make a million new and different kinds of charms!

03-26-2008, 09:05 PM
Hehe...do I hear murmurs of another charm swap? I would be willing to host one, certainly! I just got a soldering iron and I want to have a good excuse to experiment :)

03-26-2008, 09:38 PM
I love all the fabulous charms received today in one delightful package!! Thanks to eggstudio, purplerealm, joyflower, lavender lizard, the rose cottage, Karenm, jetlag, moonfairy, sometomato, bluellen, egod, amyfaerie...and especially adriayna, host extrordinaire!

03-26-2008, 10:20 PM
Im so excited.... I cant wait till mine arrive!

03-26-2008, 10:29 PM
Hehe...do I hear murmurs of another charm swap? I would be willing to host one, certainly! I just got a soldering iron and I want to have a good excuse to experiment :)

;) I saw a great soldering kit that I am going to go back and purchae...I have been wanting to try it myself!

03-26-2008, 11:15 PM
Hehehe.... is there interest in another charm swap? Do we want to do a twist on it this time or leave it wide open? I don't care--whatever you are interested in doing :P

03-26-2008, 11:17 PM
Twist please! I was kind of all over the place this time and would love to be reigned in themewise or with some kind of twisted rules or something...you know what I mean. lol

03-26-2008, 11:24 PM
The question is, what kind of twist? Thematic? Material based? Or maybe charms all in blue? I don't know!

I've done scrabble charm swaps and altered object charm swaps in the past.

03-26-2008, 11:32 PM
Thematic might be fun. What kind of soldering kit do you get and where? I am completely taken with my soldered charms. Maybe charms made from game pieces would be fun. I might be interested in a fabric one. As you can tell, my ideas are always all over the place. I seriously need direction!

03-26-2008, 11:40 PM
You can buy a solderer for like $10 at a local hardware store. The lead free solder is about $20 (silvergleam or another brand) and you need flux and copper tape and little glass squares or mosaic tiles or something else. All in all, about a $40 setup!

Ok, so themes....possibilities?

We could do something broad like "spring" or "flowers". I'm still leaning toward a color themed charm swap, because that would make an AWESOME bracelet!

Trees!!!! Nah, I won't impose my obsession on you!

03-27-2008, 12:42 AM
LOL - I like the colour theme idea too. We can always do Purple! ROFL....heee heee heee

I bought some of those Tim Holtz fragments a couple of weeks back and havent had a chance to play with them yet!
So Id be interested in another charm swap! :D

03-27-2008, 08:27 AM
I'm up for purple too, hehe. Any other thoughts?

03-27-2008, 08:51 AM
Oh, color themed would be fun! As you say, it would make a nice bracelet. :) Pink, blue, purple, whatever!

egod - I don't know if you have a Craft Warehouse, but they have a starter kit there with all the basics to get started (the items listed by Dana above) for like $50 and then additional supplies to buy as desired. And of course I liked it because the iron is pink and white. The whole thing is very girly. I'm sure a better deal could probably be had at the hardware store though.

03-27-2008, 09:43 AM
Does any soldering iron work? I have several of those as I use them for fabric fusing.
I may have a friend with the whole setup. I'll have to check that out today. Today is art day, and I go play all day with friends!
Color themed is good with me, but I would not choose pink. Blue or purple or green all sound good to me.

My beautiful charms arrived today :)

A big thank you to:
Adriayna, Lavender Lizard, Pamitha, egod, wme133, jetleg, JoyFlower, KarenM, eggstudio, PurpleRealm, Sometomato, bluellen, Deedles and mrubyjean. I love all my charms so much :)
I also got three small charms that wasn`t marked with a name. Who made the polymer clay candy corn ++ ?

03-27-2008, 10:31 AM
Erin, I think any soldering iron will work, but make sure its for solder and not for woodburning! Also, some of them have very large tips and are hard to use for small jewelry applications.

Ok, so...who is in for purple charms? I think that would be fun!

03-27-2008, 01:09 PM
Received the CHARMS, today! What beauties from: Deedles, woodburned flower - no name, clay skull - no name, Dana - butterfly scrabble, Rose Cottage, PurpleRealm, Moonfairy, Lady with black dress and purple background - no name.
Thanks Dana for hostessing and the artists that worked to produce these beautiful charms!

03-27-2008, 04:51 PM
I got my charms yesterday, and was sad to see there are several without a name!

I have a soldering iron and some lead-free solder and have played around with it, but I really don't know what I am doing. Eggstudio, HOW do you do those wonderful soldered edges on your charms?

03-27-2008, 06:12 PM

Dana, I would be up for another charms swap too, and purple is fine with me....(actually VIOLET is the true name to use.) Blue-violet is my favorite color.

I have a soldering iron and some lead-free solder and have played around with it, but I really don't know what I am doing. Eggstudio, HOW do you do those wonderful soldered edges on your charms?

All I did was get a little solder on my gun and dap it, also what is fun is if you cut your foil with a design.

03-30-2008, 05:33 PM
Ah, I see now that it is the foil and flux I am missing! Where does one find the copper foil tape?

03-30-2008, 06:10 PM
Sometomato - we have an ongoing discusison on soldering in the Art Discussions forum.

You can get copper foil from Hobby Lobby, a stained glass store, or maybe even a hardware store.

04-01-2008, 02:06 PM
