View Full Version : Encaustic Art Swap, Due April 1st

Loralou
02-19-2008, 06:52 AM
Swap Due Date - 1st April
Signup/withdraw date - 25th March
Number of Cards - 3 for 3
Number of participants - unlimited

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f39/loralou84/encausticartswap.jpg
This is a swap for encaustic wax art, an unpredictable and colourful experience! If you don't have encaustic art supplies, melted crayons are also acceptable for this swap! I would love to see what people come up with for the crayons. (Be careful with fumes from melted crayons, I have heard they can irritate if got too hot)

Although encaustic art can be very abstract, it would be nice to see some images within the wax but not totally necessary!
I encourage participants to post their creations to the thread as they make so that everyone can see.
I am in England so most of the return postage for me I will cover (for international players). If you are in the UK send a SSAE.
If you are international, a self addressed envie is very helpful to me. If you would like to send me stamps from the USA I would be most grateful as I can then send them to swap hosts of swaps I play in.
Make sure that you have your username on all your cards! (and also your envie)
If you need to withdraw, just let me know. When you are ready to send, PM me for my address. (Please note that I moved house in June so if you are storing an old address for me and are not sure if it is my recent one....please PM me to check!)
OKAY! Who wants to play??

I'm here. I was Gretchen and have changed my name. Egod has to do with my real name as Gretchen did not. I have uploaded four cards for this swap, the first I have ever done. I may do more or different. I don't think we can post to the thread as I just tried unsuccessfully. What a relief to have a site again! I just noticed that I have no i-trader rating. Wonder if that's because I changed my name? My rating was around 65 previously.

Those are very nice. I was wondering if stamping and collage as well as encaustic is okay. I love the ones by egrobeck above. What do you think, Loralou?

Loralou
02-24-2008, 05:00 PM
Well I have already received cards from 2 people where they have used embellishments and collage etc... as I didn't specifically say you couldn't add other bits I am allowing it and welcoming it for this swap.... but think I will host another one day which is pure wax.
So embellish away guys :)

well, my encaustic art workshop didnt happen, so I am well cheesed off with that - and I think I really enjoy creating abstract art encaustically too - if that is still allowed I would love to still play

many thanks

I found a pretty neat book in the library today, Wax Art by Hazel Marsh. I thought some of the rest of you might find it useful. I haven't had time to really look at it yet. It seems to have basic instructions with lots of pictures for painting with your iron--landscapes, fantasy landscapes, other pictures (floral, etc.). I felt the need for some instruction!

Loralou
02-26-2008, 05:38 AM
Sounds good egod! I found I was making landscapes over and over.... then picked up a book and started making all sorts of images with the wax! Sometimes you just need a spark of inspiration and you are off!

Hi, checking in!

stillatthetop
03-02-2008, 01:39 PM
Do any of you have trouble with the wax cracking, or is that just because I am not using the real (encastic wax) stuff? I googled, and the art sites I found recommend using a rigid board (masonite) for paintings. Am I just not using a stiff enough card back? I have to say, that for the look I am going for, the cracks actually add to things, but I am concerned the wax will flake off. I sprayed with workable fixitif last night and am now "baking" it under my lamp. Then I plan to adhere another layer of card to the back. People are right when they say prepare for unexpected results! The wax on this background is quite thick...maybe that is my trouble, but I wish to "scratch board" some images, so I need it this way. I used photo paper, and it seems not to have enough "tooth" to grip the wax. I will be experimenting away today with other card stocks and waxes that I have. Just curious what my troubles are at this point.

Loralou
03-02-2008, 01:39 PM
Nice to see you SallyAnn!
Received cards from ergobeck today! Thanks for including the US postage ;) appreciated. Gorgeous cards.

Loralou
03-02-2008, 01:41 PM
Silatthetop I do my cards on very flimsy card and it doesn't crack so I would guess it is the type of wax you are using. Are you using beeswax? This is what you prob should be using as ordinary candle wax will def go very hard and crack.

stillatthetop
03-02-2008, 01:49 PM
No, I am using crayola crayon. I then topped with a paste-up wax (clear) that is quite flexible. The kind they used to use when making newspaper layouts...to stick the copy down to the boards. Crayon is parafin like candle wax with dye instead of pigment like the encaustic wax has, but also has oil additives to make it slick. I will go hunt my stash for a beeswax candle stub I saved and try that mixed with the crayon for color. This sure is fun experimenting, even if I don't have the best results so far! I was up half the night with this project.

Loralou
03-02-2008, 01:52 PM
Well it sounds as it would be best to have a very sturdy background card then, and try to keep thin if you can. However a few cracks might add to the effect!

stillatthetop
03-02-2008, 06:13 PM
OOOOOO. What a difference the beeswax makes, and mine is from a candle, so it is slightly scented! Yummy! I am well on my way now. Thanks for the advice! I switced to regular card stock, too. I coated it with a layer of clear beeswax (well, slightly yellowed...but it won't matter with the colors I added on top), then used the crayons to go over top. Looking good so far! I am scratching into it as we speak...and even with flexing the card a little...no cracks! It bonded good to the card stock. I think the gloss paper was too much of a resist for it, in addition to the crayon being brittle.

Loralou
03-02-2008, 06:20 PM
Glad to hear you had a success with it! Can't wait to see the results.

stillatthetop
03-02-2008, 07:06 PM
Just to back up to my earlier post...The process that I put my original experiment through seems to have worked. In my googles, I read that a lot of artists put their art under a warm lamp to final set it. First I put a generous layer of workable fixitif on mine and let it dry overnight. I learned of the lamp part while I was waiting for the fixitif to dry. I did not want to light the house on fire, as fixitif is highly flameable. I just now cut the cards with a paper cutter (I like to work slightly oversized and trim), and it is almost like a plastic at this stage. I can still scratch into it with a dental tool, though, but no additional cracking. The lamp sealed most of the cracks as well. I add this because I know that many members here are experimenting with this as a medium. Any maybe seasoned members can be inspired to "play dumb" like I am, and experiment further than the books tell you to. I discover some really interesting things when I just play around with stuff, and throw all the rules out the window! LOL.

stillatthetop
03-11-2008, 05:20 PM
The majority of all my attempts were abstracts, too. I did manage some flowers and one landscape that actually looked like a landscape, though. Those are the ones that I posted earlier in this thread. This was my first real try at encaustics. I am going to do some more soon. They are an unexpected twist to art, and are kinda' addictive.

Loralu, do you only want 3/3 or can we send 6/6? Hope you are having a nice holiday. I made Hot Cross Buns as I always do for Good Friday. Are Hot Cross Buns a tradition there? I think when I started doing that forty years ago, I thought it was an English custom.

Loralou
03-22-2008, 05:27 AM
They are most certainly an English thing! Yummy!
Ummm I think I would prefer people to stick to 3for3 so that everyone gets a nice selection of cards as we don't have that many players and I anticipated a lot of drop outs which we are getting.
