View Full Version : MISC: Magic Pyramid Swap ~ Due March 31st

Binka
02-19-2008, 04:30 PM
Swap Due Date - March 31th
Signup/withdraw date - March 1st
Number of Cards - 3 for 3
Number of participants - 15

This swap is going to be simple and easy BUT the directions might seem complicated so please read them over carefully and completely before joining! :D

OK. Here's the idea. Using a sturdy background material (i.e. matt board, thick cardboard, heavy watercolor paper) we will construct the parts for a pyramid-shaped assemblage.

You will make and decorate 4 side triangles + a square base. The 4 side triangles will be 10 cm tall by 10 cm wide, and the base square is also 10 cm by 10 cm. Which is the same as saying 4 x 4 inch.

You will keep your square base and one of your sides, at home!

You will send in to swap, 3 side triangles. I will send you 3 sides back, made by other players. You can then assemble you own magic wishing pyramid! Or jewelry-holding pyramid, or whatever you want to call it.

The sides of the triangles that will make the inside of the pyramid, should be flat and smooth, for ease of assemblage. You can add a little bit color or of course :D But just keep it flat.

The sides of the triangles that will make up the outside of the pyramid should be decorated using several media and embellished! Just don't have to much hanging over the edges, please, because this will make the finished piece more difficult to assemble. And don't forget to put your screenname somewhere.

You can do the base of the pyramid like you want, you can put legs under it and add beads on the side, or whatever.

The triangle that you keep, will be the "door" to you box, i.e. the side that opens. So find a little hinge to attach it, in the meantime. Ths hinge will attach the square base to the bottom of the triangle. For extra fun, you might put a little door knob or handle on the triangle you keep at home. This part is up to you, totally.

When cutting your pyramid pieces, please use a ruler, straight edge and sharp exacto knife or a paper cutter, and get them cut to the exact specs! Measure twice, cut once! Please be neat & careful because this will affect how the finished pyramid looks

ANY QUESTIONS?? PLease ask if something is unclear.

Ok so. Are you with me so far? ;) Here's the rest:

1- send 3 triangles, 4 inches wide by 4 inches tall, outsides decorated, insides plain. Keep one triangle for your door + your base at home. Please only send work that you are proud of and would love to receive yourself.
And please post in thread when you're sending.

2- Include a self-addressed label. I have envies enough to send them back.

3- I will cover postage (there are not many here from Holland...) If you are from the US a loose stamp would be nice, so I can use them for other swaphosts. As a hint, I collect pins from cities, states or countries. (you know, that things you put on your backpack, so people can see where you've been LOL) An extra ATC in the themes I collect is also nice. But it is not required.
Maybe at some point, I can limit players... Last sign up date is March 1st

4- these are due to me, in my mailbox, not later March 31. And please notice that I'm in The Netherlands! Returns wil be mailed within a week.

5- when you get your returns, assemble your magic wishing pyramid and post a pic in this thread! If you can, I mean. This is not mandatory but I would love to see what you end up with.

Who wants a magic pyramid of their own???

Will someone be there to collect your mail? I'm not sure how much time to leave for it to arrive from USA...I was hoping to send early so that I did not need to worry.

wme133

SATT....I don't think I'd worry much. If she's only going to be gone a week...it usually takes longer than that for her to receive it. I'd say if you waited an extra day or two to feel better about it, you'd be fine.

Me, too! I built the hostess gift base for Binka today and it looks lovely, if I do say so myself! Still at a loss of things to add to the sides, but I am hunting through my stash regularly to get materials together for them. Thanks wme...I will probably be OK to send when planned. I wasn't thinking...and didn't realize how late into February we already are!

Here is what I came up with for my pyramid sides. I will mail as soon as I can and let you know for sure. Enjoy your vacation in Egypt!

stillatthetop, those are gorgeous! wow! My 4 are all versions of this one...they aren't a lot different. The scan doesn't show the lovely gold emboss, luminere paint, or gold dusting. I don't know how the Egyptians did this, all I did was slice a billion brown blocks and glue them on each triangle and it wore me out! LOL :twitcy: I shiver to think about carrying all those blocks!

Thanks, all. I am packaging to mail them....how are we putting our user info on these? I was thinking a small single line of handwritten text across the bottom of them? Then I thought that maybe the hinging to the base would cover that up. Maybe a small slip of paper (1.5" x 1") to include in the baggie with each side, then the recipient could glue that to the underside of the base? Like this scan?

Ooops...I see some have been received...How were those labeled?

Well, I could have mailed on Friday, but no one answered my question. I will be postal again Monday, and am hoping to have this resolved. I will PM the members whos sides have arrived, and see what they say/think. [I can't bring up ceedee, she may not have joined us yet, but I PMed wme133. Anyone else have thoughts on how they are wanting things...of course binka needs to have the final say.....]

SATT...I've pm'd you!

stillatthetop
03-01-2008, 08:47 PM
Thanks. wme says she wrote small on the backside, so I guess that is how we are doing things. It is probably easier, because the little slip of paper could probably get mixed up easily if it fell out of the baggie. I don't mind writing to be on the inside of the pyramid, but I just remembered talk about keeping the backside pretty on the OS.

wme133
03-02-2008, 01:06 AM
Yep...I've still kept my backside pretty(hmmm...yes, it's pretty..lol). The text I wrote was one line and small....so it still looks nice.

Hi Has anyone put a pyramid together yet? I was wondering how you hinged 'em. I tried with the lil' metal hinge and brads but it didn't work out for me.
I'm practicing with extras first. I'm not sure how we will put it together....any help?

My suggestion on the OS was to use small tabs of fabric glued to the inside. That is how I plan to do mine.

Binka
03-09-2008, 05:37 AM
My friend did hers with smal pieces of paper in the inside.
Tina had also an example on the OS where the topside was hold together. Something like this: http://images.google.nl/imgres?imgurl=http://bp0.blogger.com/_2ZFDleyYS9Y/RvxCuo50jjI/AAAAAAAAAeg/L7H8xufsI9Y/s400/pyramid.jpg&imgrefurl=http://stamping101.blogspot.com/2007/09/pyramid-box.html&h=396&w=400&sz=39&hl=nl&start=32&tbnid=IeibEKQ0uOinJM:&tbnh=123&tbnw=124&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dpaper%2Bpyramid%26start%3D18%26ndsp%3 D18%26hl%3Dnl%26rlz%3D1T4MEDA_nlNL241NL241%26sa%3D N

I thought of paper first, then I thought the fabric might hold up better, especially the hinge side. Here is the topside one that I shared. All four sides are hinged at the bottom edge and open out flat (I think). There is an open centered square that drops over the top, and a little matchstick/shish kabob skewer with a bead glued on one end slides through holes on two sides. The second one is just tied with a ribbon through holes in the top to seal/close it. I think that one is designed to be more of a gift box, though. It might be a bit awkward to open and close frequently to see any goodies you tuck inside.

Aww yes, I have made the paper ones and they are fun but would not hold up for a long time....I do like the mat board heavier ones better....I was just wondering because I've been playing around with mine and the extras.
I posted mine in the gallery if ya'll want a peek. They were so much fun. I hope you gals like 'em.

susietex, you're the best!!!! You're a diver too right?

Yep, that's right, because I dive mainly in the Indian Ocean, the fishes are pretty much the same as you'd find in the Red Sea, but I find the diving much more relaxed, very well organised and safety concious, but also laid back, very small groups.
A different dive site everyday, twice a day if you like.
Open sea, to see the big stuff, caves for the baby sharks and little fish, underwater mountains for the corals and fish of every size, just so much variety. You have to go and dive at least once in your life, it really is an unbelievable world down there.

I'm going diving at the end of April, I'll post some pics for you when I get back.

The completed pyramids look great. Silly me didn't make myself a side when I made my swap sides, so I have to make one up before I can put mine together - I was obviously having one of my 'senior's' days :goofy:

Wowsa, another beauty ceedee. I didn't make a side for myself either...except for the background base part. I wanted to wait until I got my sides to see exactly what would look best on it. Hopefully tomorrow's mail. All I got today was bills and junk:cry:

Great, only 2 persons have to receive their triangles. (at least, I think Marlien got them, as she is in The Netherlands, but she hasn't been online since March...)
Hope they arrive soon :)

Today, they arrived today, Yay, Yay!
I love these pretty triangles. Thanks so much Binka for such a clever swap. I love my pyramid sides from Bluebelle235, Barbcards, and Susietex. Now I have to go and build a pyramid... :D
I just realized, each side is from another corner of the world, Australia, UK, USA, and Canada. This pyramid must be really really really geographically huge!

How cool is that. Didn't realize that when I was swapping out.
Now only SATT have to recieve them...

I am just realizing that no one has received triangles from me...Binka, was there something wrong with them, and you were too kind to tell me?

Oh dear, I looked at my triangle pattern, and I think my measurements were off. It doesn't look the same as the ones I received. :embarrassed: I am so sorry Binka! Are you at least able to maybe use ALL of the sides I sent to make one pyramid for yourself? Yikes! I don't know where my brain must have been when I did that!!

Binka
04-28-2008, 07:56 AM
Heey JoyFlower. Not to worry to much. I thought I pmed you about your triangles, but guess I didn't.
But I got so much host triangles that I could send you triangles anyway. I kept all your triangles and made a pyramid for my grandma. She loooooooooves roses and she likes to craft too. So now your pyramid is in my grandma's house.
I really hope you don't mind and sorry for all the confusion...

Lol...I don't mind at all, I was just embarrassed when I realized what I had done! :wideeyed: I hope your grandma likes her pyramid you built. That actually makes me feel better. :) Thanks for letting me know...next time, I'm asking for a template!!

Yesssss! I got my goodies. Wonderful swap. iTrader and reps to follow!!! Here is my pyramid. I hinged my sides at the bottom only (with a half inch wide strip of thin muslin fabric glued along that edge to side and bottom). The foil wrapped square at the top holds them together, and then they open out when you remove it. What a marvelous swap this was! Thank you also for the goodies from Egypt! What a wonderful added bonus. I still have to dig out my eye of Horace stamp and add that topping to my side. I thought I had stamped extras when I made your sides, but I did not put them with the other pyramid file materials:wacko:, so I don't know where they ended up. Thanks, again!

Very nice SATT! I think I want to do the same with the top. I saw one that had a stick through the top holding it together but I like the way you did yours.

05-04-2008, 03:23 PM
oooh SATT, that looks nice.
So everyone has got their returns :jiggy: (don't know about Marlien, since she's MIA)
Think I host an other pyramidswap soon. This was so much fun.
Maybe a themed swap (flowers or a color/2 colors) or a kind of PAT swap in 2/3 groups of 5.
But still thinking about that.

Here's mine.....I' did some gold leaf on the base and it sits on four little wooden balls I painted gold as well. Did a crackle finish for the floor inside.

Wow! That looks great, Wanda!

Binka, I like the theme idea. Actually this swap kind of "themed" itself in the long run. As members started seeing the panels posted, I guess we all pretty much took on the Egypt idea.

Flowers would be good. Other ideas I might like to see...wild animal prints, recipe/food stuff, girly fashion art (diva) could be displayed in a bathroom or dressing area, jokes/cartoons, game pieces and playing cards....lots of themes you could do with these. Also the holiday themes might be good, as then they would be displayed periodically. I'm not sure how much room I have for displaying lots of these at once.
