View Full Version : 4x6 Chunky House Swap With A Twist ~Due Nov. 27th
NiteOwl
09-26-2009, 02:44 PM
Due Date: Nov. 27, 2009
No. of houses: 3 for 3
No of participants: unlimited U.S. / 6 international
Medium: mostly collage with paint/drawing for detail
Size: 4x4 with 2" peak (no off set roofs please)
Make sure your user name is on the back of all your houses.
If you'd like to make an extra house for me, I'd be so happy but don't feel like you have to. Just having you in the swap is enough. :spinny:
The twist:
You will be attaching your pages together at the peak so we can embellish on all sides.
Two of the houses must look like the outside of a house or building. Example: glue a picture of a plain looking house and paint some windows, glue a face in the window, paint some window boxes...etc. or paint the house and cut out pictures of windows doors people and glue them on. Mixed mediums. Make these 2 how ever you'd like just so it looks like the outside of a building, or house Don't leave the backs plain at least swipe some paint on them and don't forget your user name. (example: the 2 chunky houses in my gallery that are the front of a house)
(This is the twist)One of the three houses must look like a room in a house or building (bathroom, office, craft room...etc). You can paint the walls but find pictures in magazines for the furniture. Please don't just cut out a big picture of a chair and stick it on the house. They need to be small enough and to look like a room. They won't be purfect or to scale for the house but I just want some effort put into the rooms.
The back of this house must look like the back of a house/building or backyard. Don't take a lot of time on the back and have a place or washed out place for your info (at least user name).
Oh yes, don't forget to embellish all 3. :D I will be doing that to the one below.
Mailing instructions: Please put your user name on the back of both envelopes.
International:
I will pay the postage but please send a self addressed paded envelope for me to send you swapped houses in.
United States:
Please send a self addressed, stamped paded envelope with the same amount of postage as it costs you to send your houses to me.

Count me in! I was cutting 4x6 houses last night!
Ok do I have this right?
House 1 has a front side looking like, say, the front door of the house and the backside a bit decorated or painted with artist info...
House 2 front looks like a room...furnished and so on...back a bit decorated with artist info.
House 3 front looks like the back of the house, back door say, and the reverse decorated a bit with artist info...
And all of it mainly collage on a painted or papered background?

do you have an example of what this looks like? sorry, if that sounds like a goofy question but, I'm a 'visual' kind of person... :twitcy:
NiteOwl
09-26-2009, 10:21 PM
Jean, 2 of the 3 houses just need to look like the outside of a house, school, high rise building...etc. One house must be a room inside a house or building (kitchen, school room, store...etc.)
The Mad Catter, I am too, and I'm working on the chunky that looks like a room as we speak. I hope to get it made and uploaded late tonight. If I can get my scanner to work.
NiteOwl

I'll go start the list with you Jean and you PrincessScary. Thanks for being the first 2 brave souls. ;)

awesome! I can't wait to see it! ;)
NiteOwl

Maybe I'm making this sound harder than it is. You make 3 Chunky House pages 4"x4" with a 2" peak. Make 2 houses look like the front of a building, any building (a school, store, house...etc.) Mixed Media/collage.
But one of your 3 houses must look like a room inside of a building (a school room, a craft room, a bathroom, a bedroom...etc.) Please don't just draw the furniture, find pictures and cut them out (carefully, neatly) and arange your room. That is the twist/challange. On the back of this chunky make it look like the back of a building/house or a backyard. Like my example in my swap thread post. I explain how I did it in my gallery.

yeah, yeah, I get it now!! I'm dyslexic and it really helps me if I can get a look at something sometimes! ;) Thanks for understanding NiteOwl!! Sign me up for this one!!
NiteOwl
09-27-2009, 03:21 PM
Great! I'm glad you're in!
Love the examples, NiteOwl!
Warning re: rubber cement, though. I used it tons when I was teaching and had the kids collaging and so on. It can seep through to the front of mag pictures, making a nasty blot. It can discolour them, too, from creamy yellow to nasty browns. And its hold is not permanent; some of our work didn't last the year, while others lasted into the next school year. It's a real catch 22: put too much and you get ugliness, put too little and it falls off sooner.
I understand Modge Podge has problems of its own; never used it, but the threads about it make me steer clear.
I think I will use artists' gel medium. I have Liquitex and Golden. The excess won't roll off, but I'll cover the whole with a thin coat to seal the pieces in and that should do it. If I knew how to use wax, I imagine that would work as well.
The Mad Catter
09-27-2009, 05:55 PM
wow, I've never had any trouble with mod podge...not that I am aware of anyway! :) Guess I better check into that... thanks for the info Jean!!
NiteOwl
09-28-2009, 02:23 AM
I've never had trouble with rubber cement either. For a temperary hold you only put glue on one surface and position it down right away. But for a permenent hold you brush glue on both surfaces, let it get tacky then position it down. I love the stuff! I've been using it for years. If you don't want to use the magazine picture directly you could make a copy of it and use that. The magazine cut outs will wrinkle with mod podge...or it has for me. I'm just not crazy about the stuff. I think it's because I just don't like to have to cover the whole page with it. I like to be able to feel the different layers (I know I'm crazy lol ).
The Mad Catter
09-28-2009, 08:53 AM
;) isn't cool how different we all are! see, I have always been so self-conscious about 'feeling' those different layers! LOL!!
NiteOwl
09-28-2009, 02:14 PM
You're so right. Everyone has there likes and dislikes. It's just what works for you. That's what I love about this site and art. Everyones pieces look & feel different.
I don't like elmer's glue but I know a gal from the old site that does beautiful collages has sold some pieces and all she uses is watered down elmer's glue. She loves it.
I don't go into work until 5:30pm (only 6 hrs tonight :() but the good thing about it is I'm going to get started on another House Chunky(if I can get my eyes off this computer! LOL)
Janjo33
09-28-2009, 05:23 PM
I'm lurking too. I may cut some houses and see what I have to use before committing. BUT THIS SOUNDS REALLY COOL!
NiteOwl

Thanks Janjo33. :D
Hey everybody, I'm thinking about extending the due date to.....Nov. 27th. So that gives us about 7 weeks to get our houses made. Does that sound long enough?
The Mad Catter
09-29-2009, 08:12 AM
Oh yes, I like that date!! More time to create! :)
Works well for me, too! More time to hunt up fab pictures to make our rooms! I'm thinking of a library...but maybe not. lol
Lucinda Stumped
09-29-2009, 09:35 AM
Oh yes, NiteOwl! That date is wonderful! Sign me up! :jiggy:

As you have extended the date, please can I join. Really into houses at the moment
NiteOwl
09-29-2009, 12:30 PM
Oh Jean, a library room sounds cool! After making my living room chunky I realized the searching for just the right pictures takes longer than I thought so the extended due date will help. My other 2 (the front of house or building) is going to be faster for me to make. I'm thinking of a dog house for one of them.
NiteOwl
09-29-2009, 12:32 PM
Now I'm really glad I extended the due date! Thanks for joining! I'll go add you both right now.

Question for NiteOwl, do you want us to bind the three house pages together before we send them to you? Or are we just providing the holes in the roof on our pages? "You will be attaching your pages..." ?

Good question! No don't bind them together because we will each get 3 houses from 3 different people, with one being an indoor room.
You can put the hole in the top of the peak if you want to or let the person that receives them.
I'm so glad you and goatgoddess has joined!
NiteOwl

I got my other 2 houses made tonight but it's almost 3am so I'll get them uploaded in the next day or two. I decided not to make a dog house. I made the front of a motorcycle garage shop instead and the other one a house with a couple kissing infront of the door. Oh but I still have to do something on the back of the motorcycle shop chunky.
The Mad Catter
10-04-2009, 08:37 AM
they sound really cool, NiteOwl!! :)
NiteOwl
10-04-2009, 02:32 PM
Here they are. I haven't embellished any of my houses yet but I have some ideas of what I might do. The room chunky I'm thinking of hanging some cropped down paint swatches, for the lovers infront of the house chunky I have a heart shaped lock and the motorcycle shop chunky I have some rusty bolts & washers. I'll probably hang a few other things on them too.

NiteOwl
10-14-2009, 01:22 PM
Leneas Paperdreams, this is how I do it:
After you've uploaded it to your gallery
click on your picture so it's bigger
right click on the big image
click on properties
highlight address URL
right click on the highlighted URL and click copy
Now to post your picture in thread:
click on the 'insert image' icon (between the world icon and smiley face icon
backspace (erase) the 'http://' that is in the box
make sure your curser is blinking in the box, right click and paste
click ok and you image should be in your post.
It seems like a lot of steps (write them down) but after you've done it a few times it's fast.

11-06-2009, 07:38 PM
Okay - I'm trying to fit these chunkies in a 5X9 padded envelope - they fit, but then there's no room for an SASE. Anyone have suggestions for packaging?
Some of the hosts have said that they reuse envelopes. If we put in extra labels, NiteOwl, can you just put the new labels over the old ones and retape the envelope shut? From what I've seen of envelopes I've received, it looks as though the PO just scrawls through the old stamps and puts on new ones...??
Janjo33
11-06-2009, 09:18 PM
Or I can put my padded return envelope inside a non padded envelope - I think that might work,
NiteOwl
11-06-2009, 10:38 PM
Yes Janjo33, that's what I do. I put my chunky's inside the padded envelope that is for the returns, unsealed of course. Then put that inside the non-padded envelope that is sent to the host.
Love your last house! Sooo cute!
Well, I hope these meet swap requirements. Please let me know if not, NiteOwl... The leaves are holographic ones I clipped from an anniversary card. I'll add some fibers or whatnot if these are ok.
Janjo33
11-08-2009, 10:45 PM
NiteOwl - my houses were picked up by the postman yesterday - let me know when they arrive and if they're intact!

Janjo33, I will let you know plus, that is when I give itraders too (when I recieve the swap envelopes).
NiteOwl
11-09-2009, 01:22 PM
Yikes! People are dropping out like flies! :( I think I should have kept the first due date.
Thanks, NiteOwl! Mine are en route, as well! What a great stretch this was!
Or I can put my padded return envelope inside a non padded envelope - I think that might work,
Brilliant! That's just what I did - thanks for the great adv!

Great houses, smokeysmom! Yes! I'll go take the withdrew sign off. And thank for the extras!
I decided to make a different house/building to replace the motorcycle building. I got to thinking if you're not into motorcycles you may not like getting that chunky. So I'm keeping that one. I have to make the back and embellish it. I'll post it tomorrow.

I finally got this chunky done! It's a store called Nutrition Place (made up by me). I look at Walmart last night after work for some food charms but all I could find was a kids charm bracelet with a cherry for $5.00. Today I went to Michael's but didn't find anything there either and I spent to much time there to go to Hobby Lobby. So I dug around here at home and did find some cool embelishments for it.
Front and back.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! I have to work 3pm-11pm but they are going to feed us turkey, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, green beans and apple, pumkin, blueberry & cherry pie. My son was suppose to work but they told him tonight that he won't have to but he has to work Sat. (he usually has Sat. off). My hubby is going to his parents and then out to eat.

Thanks everyone for making such cool houses!

Yippee! I can't wait. Of course I'll only have 3 houses in my collection, but hopefully it will grow later.
