View Full Version : SIX PACK OF BOTTLE CAPS - Due June 22nd
joes lines
04-29-2012, 03:34 PM
PRACTICAL MATTERS:
Due date: In my hands by 22 June 2012. This is an absolute deadline; I am going to mail return packages out on 25 June.
Drop date: None, but please be considerate if there are people on a waiting list. Let me know as soon as possible if you plan to drop so that another player can have your slot
Number of items: 6:6, 12:12, or 18:18
Number of participants: 20
Media: Hand drawn
A SIX PACK OF BOTTLE CAPS (Due 22 June 2012)
THEME:
I’ve never really had a problem finding an excuse to consume a six pack. But if you have that problem, here’s a golden opportunity for you to have a great reason to enjoy six bottles of your favorite beverage, all in the interest of art.
For this swap, you’ll be making six bottle cap pieces of art. This entails a small hand drawn or hand painted image inside a 1” (25mm) diameter circle glued into the interior of a bottle cap. The theme is open-ended, but there should be clear coherence between the six images and each image should be different. My Star Trek and Wizard of Oz examples appear below, but this isn't the only option.
Once you get returns, the bottle caps can be converted into magnets (that’s what I do), ornaments, jewelry, etc.
FUSSY RULES:
- All art should be hand drawn or painted. Mixed media backgrounds are ok (if you have room), but the main image should be your original work.
- Art should be confined to a 1” (25mm) circle. Guess what? That’s the exact size of a US quarter!
- Please work on a sturdy base (cardstock or thicker), coat your image with matte medium or some other suitable glaze, and glue securely to the inside of your bottle cap.
- Bottle caps should be clean (soak overnight in liquid dish soap to remove odors) and in good shape (twist offs work best). The caps should also be painted to cover up original markings on the side and rear/top. You may alternately use the pre-painted and flattened bottle caps that are often sold in the jewelry department of your favorite hobby or craft shop.
- Please consider quality - submit art that you would be proud to display in your own collection.
- Make sure to tape a small piece of paper with your atcsforall username to the back of each cap so that proper rep points can be distributed after returns arrive.
- Appropriate host gifts are appreciated, but not required.
MAILING, POSTAGE AND RETURNS
- PM me for my address when your cards are finished and ready to mail.
- Please send your carefully wrapped bottle caps in a USPS Small Flat Rate Priority Mail box or well wrapped bubble envelope. The flat rate box will cost you $5.35 to mail to me if you're in the US.
- All participants should include a self addressed, full-sized mailing label.
- All US participants should include $5.35 for return postage. I know this is expensive, but I think the USPS flat rate boxes are the best way to insure that every package gets where it’s supposed to go. Sorry.
- I will post to this thread as I receive packages and will leave iTraders when I swap out. Please leave an iTrader for me and Rep Points (“You Rock”) for artists after you receive your packages this summer.
- For returns, you can elect to receive 6 (or 12 or 18) different bottle caps from 6 different players OR a complete set of 6 caps from a single player. Please indicate which you would prefer in the thread or a pm; if you don't indicate, I'll assume that either is acceptable.

I was looking into buying some bottlecaps off ebay or something and then stopped myself and said, "self, you have been working your ass off for the past month, consuming a six pack of Mike's Hard will likely not kill you" ... So after work this afternoon I am going to venture out to the store.

With 4 year old twins in the house knocking back a six-pack will be a welcome task.....DaDa lines are drawn in the sand......count me in!
Mmmmm. Mike's Hard. That's Jason's first thought whenever I say "bottle caps."
I really need to learn to check for the banana in the tailpipe before I turn the key. My police captain is going to be pissed . . . :(

Ok, so I've got CindyJoLines, themuppet, nuttynanner, HotMamaRama, and DADAology signed up. This is going to be an awesome group!
Just so you know, based on the comments above I have made the decision to put my Star Wars bottle caps in my safety deposit box, so you'll have to knock over a bank in order to pry them away from me.
I have also taken out copyright paperwork on the word "lines" in order to prevent any further disorderly conduct.
I also am going to go on record as saying that I think Mike's Hard Lemonade is really yucky. This is saying something, since I will drink *almost* anything.
Jennie

May I play please. Joe I promise to behave. i can't drive to NY to knock over the bank since I can only drive in a 5 mile circle. Yes my husband has tethered the car so I can't hurt anyone with my driving.
I promise not to be disorderly- Ok I will try to not be disorderly- I probably won't even try.
Mike's hard lemonade does suck- not sure who drinks it, but they make a lot of it.
Why do we have to soak them chocolate beer smells awesome?

I was getting ready to buy you all drinks, but I reclaim my offer cuz I think the swap is now full!!!
Maybe put me in the waiting list with the bar nuts (clearly not people, a dish with nuts) I'll take a Mike's hard or anything for that matter. We don't buy Mike's because my husband's name is Mike and you can imagine the drunk jokes that go with the name Mike and Mike's Hard.

Just added Jennie and Jazzie. Also adding "learn to bartend" to my list of things to do before July. Right now I have basically perfected one drink: double Bushmills Irish whisky, straight up. And that recipe took me about 6 years to master.

Meredithu, we can go up to 15 in this swap. I just put 10 slots in because I would've had to take my socks off to count up any higher and was feeling lazy. I added you to the list, but let me know if that's not ok.
Otherwise, this is where the courtesy "I would've joined, but now you're full" strategy backfires. :)

oh wow!
So, we have this family tradition. My father, God love him, is the cheapest drunk on the planet. seriously, half a glass of wine and he's giggling under the table. Needless to say, he very rarely drinks (all the better for mom & me who can hold our liquor). But holiday gathering everyone needs something fun to drink, so fancy sodas have become the thing.
Dad & the kids get all kinds of fun bottled beverages like micro-brewed root beer (Virgil's is awesome if you ever see it, buy it!), crazy flavors of Jones sodas, Stewart's, IBC (did you know IBC does seasonal flavors? try the cherry lime! it's a summer flavor only). anyway, I have lots and lots of bottle caps, therefore I must join.
question about this rule:
"The caps should also be painted to cover up original markings on the side and rear/top."
is that hard and fast? or were you thinking beer and it would only apply to alcoholic beverage caps? Some of mine are pretty cool to start with, but I'll work with the more boring ones if you want them all painted.
nanner
04-30-2012, 06:56 PM
While it won't score you any bottle caps, a pitcher of Crystal Light (lemonade, fruit punch, strawberry-kiwi) and some vodka make a nice substitute for Mike's with a bit more of a punch. Mike's Hard gives me a headache (insert your own joke here), so I had to take matters into my own hands.
Pen, those caps are pretty dang cool already...maybe just some ink or something equally transparent to show off the fun brands? Of course, I defer to the bottle cap master: Mr. J-to-the-Lines. :D Mmmm, cherry lime?!

04-30-2012, 07:04 PM
Yea, I loved Purple Passion, until I realized it wasn't really a hang over so much as a violent reaction to all the artificial colors & crap they put in those to hide the malt flavor :shiver: I stick to simple mixed drinks or wine, and not the box kind (although I don't spend tons on it). Gimme a rum & coke any day.

Welcome Penlowe! I don't have a problem with unpainted caps - I just wanted to try and avoid the beat up, scratched rusty, looks like it's been stuck between a crack in the sidewalk type of bottle caps. As long as they're presentable and neat, no problems.

One other piece of housekeeping business, when I wrote the swap I intended to swap set for set, so that the groups of six stick together in their new home (so, all six of player X's bottle caps go to player Y, etc.). I just wanted to make sure everyone knew that was the intention. I'm willing to rethink that, so if you have strong opinion let me know and I will clarify it in the opening post.

Love the set for set idea.
So correct me if I'm wrong, but let's say your set of 18 Star Wars is on the table... does that mean if I make 18 of something I could "theoretically" get all 18 of yours? Or are we talking if I make 18 as 3 sets of six, I could get 3 different sets from 3 different artist?
Regardless, I'm still stoked about this swap!

On the shipping, I guess that I'd prefer it if they were in the USPS priority flat rate boxes - you can get those for free at your local PO and the shipping is uniform. I'm going to me mailing returns back in the flat rate boxes, so as long as they get to me in one piece it's no big deal.

On the set-for-set issue, I could break the group into two camps - one group of players who would prefer to swap set-for-set and one group of players who would prefer to get returns from a variety of players. Is that ok with everyone? You should probably also let me know which group you'd prefer to go in (or if you don't care).
PS, if you haven't figured it out yet, I am a horrible, horrible decider.

My head is filled with pop culture ideas (do you see what I did there?)... Fairy tale characters, Alice in Wonderland, the Fellowship of the Ring (have to double up or drop out some characters to get a round 6, though), superhero teams, Universal Studios monsters, Henry VIII's wives.
My daughter also tells me that I should seriously consider "big-eyed, cute pets".

Right there with you on the "horrible decider" - I like both swapping ideas. Want a variety of artists, but also want a whole set by one artists. (ie - your Star Wars) Guess if I do 3 sets of 6, I would get 3 different artists right! :) ha

Joe are you a Libra?? I am and I am the worst "deciderer" it's very stressful for me when I go to eat with a group, I can never make up my mind and then when I finally do when I see what everyone else got I always wish I'd gotten something different. When I go on an over night trip, take 2 suitcases, can't decide what to wear, been married 3 times...decisions, decisions....ha ha ha....oh and which line at the grocery store, or which lane at the red light...it's exhausting trying to decide.
I prefer to have a smothering of caps, I think, LOL
Joe, I'll take whatever is easier for you.
And for some reason, I cannot resist pointing out the following sets of six: The Brady Bunch kids, the Scooby Gang (Buffy, Angel, Willow, Xander, Cordelia, and Giles), and Star Trek TNG (Picard, #1, Data, Worf, Geordi, and Troi / Crusher). In fact, if we try hard enough, I'm thinking we can make sets of 6 from almost any ensemble cast, as long as we don't mind deciderating between characters. (Example: Buttercup, Westley, Inigo, Fezzik, Vizzini, Humperdink . . . .or Buttercup, Westley, Inigo, Fezzik, Miracle Max, Minister OR . . . )
By the way, speaking as the add-on to an entire indecisive familiy - namely, the D'Angelos - I will tell you that the reason you don't like deciding is that when you (meaning I) decide badly, it SUCKS to be the reason everyone is eating half-charred hamster. Or whatever.

Damn Mups = can I do robots? too? or is that copying? well it wouldn't be since I am here an you are in NY? I give you all the credit in the world, your robots will kick ass and mine will wallow in mediocrity.

It looks like there's pretty strong consensus in favor of doing random returns, so let's just do it that way (I'll fix the front page to reflect that). So, you'll be getting back six different bottle caps from six different players. If people are interested in set swaps, maybe that could be done as a separate trade.
See, this is a "leadership" strategy - feign indecisiveness until enough people weigh in to create the illusion of consensus. One of my six keys to success.

Oh Penlowe It does happen sometimes. Last month i had this brilliant idea that has never dried completely. So if anyone has an idea of how to make acrylic spray not tacky on polymer clay. Let me know I did 2 light coats as always with krylon acrylic gloss. The only difference is a new can.

Jennie, sometimes acrylic sprays are tricksy! You could try crumpling up some waxed paper and then rubbing it with that.. it works sometimes. Or try spraying it again with a quick-dry formula.

I just expanded the swap size to 20 and added SunTrade, 1 Art Lady, and artkeyologist.
I've also heard from a couple of people who would prefer sets rather than random returns, so I'll try to accomodate all of those requests when I swap out - please let me know if you have a preference or don't care, and I will add that information to the first page as we go.

I can't believe I skipped all my card swaps to make these but they were SO FUN! I couldn't stop myself! I made Angry Birds, Wizard of Oz, and of course Dr. Who. Ain't no way these will scan properly so they are comin' your way Joe.
And I think a full set would be cool in some cases- like characters from a movie or TV show or such, but if someone sent six flowers or rainbows or something, I'd be just as happy with a mix-up. So file me wherever depending on returns.

YES! I love the off-the-beaten-path sodas! Jones is my favorite, though they aren't the right kind of caps for this. I have seen/heard of Boylan's, but haven't tried it yet. I'll definitely have to check that one out!
There's just something superior (in my mind) to soda in glass.
Penlowe
05-06-2012, 09:31 AM
I prefer my sodas from a fountain when possible, but bottled micro-brews are a close second.
I am spoiled rotten by having an honest-to-God 1930's pharmacy with soda fountain in my city functioning well into my adulthood. It's changed hands an is no longer a pharmacy, but the soda fountain is still there, in all it's stainless steel Art Deco glory. They actually do sodas the old way, syrup first, then soda. even a plain old Coke is delicious that way, but getting a vanilla Dr. Pepper made by hand? heaven!

I remember going up the street to the SS Kress (sp) when I was very little I had to be less than 3 because it was with my grandmother and she let us sit at the bar and have an ice cream cone. It sticks in my mind because it was just us, and in our economic situation that just wasn't something that happened. As many times as I'd been in that store I'd never been in the soda fountain. The boy wore a turquoise vest, that matched the seats. I got lots of granny hugs that day. And we got to buy 2 wigs for my barbie like doll, because my sister cut all my barbie hair off and then said I did it. What a treat and a fond memory.

I got the epoxy stickers off Ebay and they work great. That's what I used too and since I had to redo these things 3 times since the glue wouldn't dry and kept soaking through the back and leaching my color, I put one epoxy sticker on front and one on back and then glued them into the caps. Worked swell!
Jennie

I love the epoxy dots but can't find the one inch size. Great to know that they have them on ebay.
If you havn't tried mod podge dimensional magic. I love it. It only comes in a 2 oz. bottle but doesn't take much at all. You can just put a single covering. It's self leveling so make sure everything is flat. You can fill the cap completely for a glass look. It will shrink in a little but I just fill the little divot in the middle if it bothers me.

Nanner, Love them, just love them! Here is a side story about the Village people.... I as a woman of a certain age, was attending my very youngest cousins wedding. At the reception all these young 20 somethings are dancing, and this oldster too. All of a sudden the song changes to YMCA, I of course do the moves, the youngsters look at me with jaws dropped..... All wanted to know how in the world I knew that "dance"..... just looked at them and said Oh please.... I was there the first time around! Ha!

Some friends and I saw The Village People at the OC Fair a few years back. And...get this...they added an army dude. The YMCA still played out as you'd imagine 20 years later, but it was hilarious seeing that they felt the need to add new characters to the mix. I mean, they had us at "motorcycle dude", didn't they?! :biglaugh:

I will, of course, try to take note of anti-clown sentiments when I distribute returns. Hopefully no one is cupcake-phobic! :v_spin:
Sometimes, Joe's Lines is a *little* obsessive. The Star Wars bottle caps were bothering me because there are obviously a lot more characters to choose from. But where do you stop?
Eighty little one inch circles later, I have one bottle cap for every Star Wars figure made during the original run of the series. I think that my original figures are in a landfill somewhere and I'd need to take a second mortgage out if I wanted to replace them, so these will serve as a second best.

Holy bologna joe, thats a lot of rinchies! Very cool in a geeky OCD kinda way.
Dear joes lines:
To my eternal chagrin, my Star Wars figures, Land Speeder, Millennium Falcon, Death Star Station, and Dewback are also at the bottom of a landfill somewhere. But here's the good news: My husband kept all of his stuff - and he had A LOT of stuff: the Hoth playset, Dagobah, Cloud City, etc. The first time I visited his house in CA, I greeted his parents and his sister and socialized with them for about 14 seconds before I said, "I want to see the Star Wars collection. Right. Now." So we got it all out and played with it.
And guess where it lives now? My house.
Party at AnnD's!
Bring the bottlecaps. I adore them.
Sincerely,

JJ Abrams is filming the sequel to the Star Trek reboot even as we speak, with a release date of next May. I know that the die hard fans had problems with the Abrams movie, but I kinda loved it.
I personally think that we are due for a new Star Trek Movie, even if Rodenberry died

Joe is very strong in the force.... I am in awe. so, the hubs and I are playing the Star Wars MMO, depending on the day we play Empire or Republic. I feel kinda guilty that my sith is level 50 while my jedi is only 38...

Penlowe, they always make the bad guys easier to level. Always. But my last MMO was WoW and the horde were just too damn ugly. If I want to be a fictional character she isn't going to have my big ass (so trolls and orcs were out) Wasn't going to be hairy or have bits falling off (so no tauren or undead). I did try a blood elf but they were just to snooty. So I had lots of elves and drenai (a pretty blue demon with hooves and a tail, who can resist that?)

Except for the extreme highlights, I loved the one he made. Watched it A LOT of times! I think they did so well on the cast .... I thought it was coming this summer .... bummer .....

For our uber-host for his growing collection. A three-banger of real, parody and completely fabricated.

OMG Joe - those are absolutely sensational! :notworthy: :swoon: You've captured all the great characters!
I love that Star Wars has stood the test of times and now even my son is a Star Wars geek! We recently watched all 6 movies back to back.
Nan & Lil - those are fantastical as well! Pizza-the-hutt is hilarious and She-P30 is lovely! And always love the Muppets!

This is a terrible picture, but it is because I made them shakers, so the plastic on top obscures the photo of the insides. They are much crisper in person. the drink and some 'ice cubes' float around each one. the themes are all adult beverages in their appropriate settings.

Awesome bottle caps, folks. It seems like people are tending to gravitate into three factions: pop culture (see what I did there?), food, and body parts.
Thanks for making this a great swap group, everyone!

I picked up 100 of those for $11(total with shipping) on Ebay as well. Seemed like a pretty good deal. I'm making some Alice in Wonderland themed to go inside. That checkerboard pattern just screams Alice.

Joe-
As much as I want mini-mags on my mini-fridge, I don't want anyone's wonderful artwork to end up in the clutches of Sticky Fingers O'Connor (Fingers for short), so I'm bowing out. It would be a shame for anyone's creation to be lost or damaged and the little one is seeing past my attempts to label everything I don't want her to touch as "hot". I will just have to enjoy the eye candy from afar.
